Jen Moss interviews Dr. Ghada Alatrash about contemporary Syrian protest poetry. Dr. Alatrash is a Syrian-Canadian academic, researcher, writer and translator. She has translated poetry for Syrian and Lebanese poets. She is currently translating a Syrian novel that speaks to lived realities of women in her hometown of Sweida, in Southern Syria, written by novelist Najat Abdul Samad ... Ghada has a PhD in Educational Research, Languages and Diversity from the University of Calgary and currently teaches at Mount Royal University in the Women’s and Gender Studies Dept and the Dept of General Education. As part of her work, she hopes to disrupt the hegemonic discourses and help amplify the voices of the silenced through the universal language of poetry, music, and storytelling, and to build communication bridges between East and West. Part of her research speaks to the living experience of the Syrian Diaspora in Canada. Her research was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Doctoral Scholarship. She was also ran as Liberal MP Candidate in Calgary Signal Hill in the 2019 recent Federal Election in Canada.
