The walls are completed in a record time of 52 days, but thats far from the end of the story. Nehemiah knows that the walls were never an end in themselves. He longed for the day when the city would be full of people praising God. The city needs its citizens, because people matter.
In the book of Nehemiah we find the city of David, Jerusalem, in ruins. In lots of ways it was due to failings over many years, of the people of God, to trust, follow and serve Him. Even after God continually draws them back to him; is patient, slow to anger and abounding in love, they persist in their sin and find themselves and their city in ruins. But God is about a great work of restoration, in their lives and in our lives today.
