people's lives were like and what

challenges they faced. So it's this

section where Theon has brought everyone

together so that

castle. They're in the Great

Hall and now Bran is supposed to

do his duty and transfer

power, I suppose. Yes,

exactly. And so,

I mean, I guess the most striking

part of it is obviously I think what I remembered from

the first time I read it was Mickin

being killed. But

it's actually there's a whole host of

individuals, right, who have been

living in Winterfell and they have their roles

to play. And they're all there and they're the

people that Bran is thinking of when he

thinks I have to protect the small folk. And

it just is a really nice,

I think, array of characters,

whether it's in Beth Castle, right, who's

crying in fear, or

some of the guards, the guard who was injured

but brought in injured. It's

kind of an interesting take. You just get a little

snippet about each of them. And really, in the

books, we don't learn a lot about some

7:24

of those characters. And I think it

gives a kind of nice depth to the chapter in terms

of just reading a novel. But I

also think it speaks

about what we know from the Middle

Ages about the non-elite. And

so I thought that was really interesting. It's sort of like I read

that and was like, oh, I wish I kind of knew more about

some of these characters, right? Yeah,

I think that the idea – and

I think that Martin's kind of gone out

of his way to make this point. But

the idea here is that every

fighting man available has been sent away

from the castle, right? Either

they're fighting Rob's war down south

or they've gone to meet another

challenge with with

castles, and there are all sorts of ways to

take a castle. And

he sets it up, you know, I was dubious at first,

but he sets it up by saying, you know, Torhen

is being attacked and so they

need reinforcements. And this is where

Theon gets the idea in the

previous chapter on Theon. And

so all these forces, and as they say

at bottom page, 668, by

Roderick, took too many of our men. So

that's the ploy that gives the excuse. And

then Theon, of

course, knows the castle inside and out. So

he knows where its weak point is. And that's

where they, again, they use the hooks

to climb the wall and open the

postern gate. Now that would have been unlikely

by anybody who didn't know the castle to know where

the gate was, how to get to it, how to

open it, let in the men. But

that sets it up for being real in my view.

So that's a realistic way to take a castle because

it's the best way to take a castle as somebody

11:23

betrayed on the inside. Theon

11:25

starts on the outside, but he gets easy access

11:27

because there aren't enough men on the walls. And

11:32

so to me, it's a plausible way that the

11:34

castle was taken, but they couldn't hold it. And

11:37

that's why he needs the reinforcements from his sister. Right.

11:40

One thing that I noted

11:42

is that Theon says

11:44

this odd thing to Bran, or

11:46

at least it struck me as

11:48

odd. He says the

11:50

castle is mine, but

11:53

the people are yours. And

11:56

there's almost sort of like a... like

12:00

in order for the peaceful transfer of

power to happen, Bran

has to say the words and

12:06

he has to transfer the lordship

12:10

or the ownership of the castle to

12:13

save the life of his people. But

that seemed an odd thing to do

for someone who just took a castle

by force. So would

one of you be able to explain

this phrase, the castle is mine but

the people are yours? I

guess, I don't know, Brian do you

something you really wanted to say? Well I don't

really, I could say, I think it's related to

the concept of feudal hierarchy that

the systems are constructed around.

And Deon keeps emphasizing I'm a prince.

And princes are at the top of the feudal

hierarchy so they don't have a direct connection to

especially the peasants. And

12:56

that's what we were talking about, there are no

knights in the castle, the knight equivalent in Game

of Thrones. And it's

13:02

just the common folk. And the

13:04

common folk are part of the

13:06

menorial economic structures. So

they are sworn to a lord through their own

13:12

swearing, their own relationships with the

13:14

lord. They're not connected to the castle,

13:16

they're connected to the lord. I see. So

13:19

it's that sort of, and that's what, it's always

13:21

difficult to explain, maybe I haven't succeeded

13:24

yet entirely, there's these two interlocking systems.

The feudal hierarchies are with the

13:29

commanders and the warriors. And

13:32

the menorical hierarchies are between the

13:34

landlords and their workers. And

13:37

they overlap and intermix and are all

13:39

blended together. And I think the division

13:42

that you're talking about is what's going on

13:44

here. That Deon knows he has no direct

13:46

relation to the peasants or

13:49

the Castellan people because they're common

13:51

people. That would be my

13:53

explanation. I agree 100% with

13:56

Brian's assessment, but I would also say

13:58

I think there's another layer that

14:00

is I think sometimes hard for

14:03

those of us living in the 21st century to kind

14:05

of wrap our minds around and

14:08

that is that there's also this system of

14:10

personal bonds that are

14:12

deeply important and I always think the

14:14

Song of Ice and Fire does an

14:17

amazing job of showing

14:19

that kind of medieval

14:21

connection like how important those personal connections

14:24

were. So Theon may have

14:26

lived in that castle may have known

14:28

those people but he that makes them

14:30

all the more aware that they have

14:32

this deep loyalty to House Stark

14:36

and particularly to Bran to

14:38

Robb and that this

14:40

is a personal connection and they

14:42

see themselves as having this bond

14:44

even even the servants they're very

14:46

much associate themselves with that particular

14:48

house that family and so

14:50

he also that's another reason I think

14:52

he needs Bran to say you know

14:55

you should do what Theon says because the

14:57

worry is if he doesn't sort of take

14:59

care of that it doesn't matter if he

15:02

has the castle if people will still be

15:04

willing to come after him because of their

15:06

loyalty to to those particular people and I would say

15:08

it's more a loyalty to the people than

15:10

the castle although again I think this

15:12

is just another layer along with the kind of

15:14

more economic and feudal system

15:17

that Bryan explained so well. So

15:20

and well let me just add that and you

15:22

asked what interested me most or Etrdas both in

15:25

this chapter and what I saw is is these

15:27

relationships because that's how I was

15:29

trying to understand explain these relations is they

15:31

are personal bonds that are

15:33

formed between people and often based

15:35

on promises and so

15:37

we have the military promises that are

15:40

made when Reek gives you know it

15:42

has a sword and when Osha takes

15:44

a weapon so those are

15:46

military bonds that they make directly with Theon

15:49

and so they're setting themselves those two on

15:51

a different level whereas

15:53

the peasants are just asked to

15:55

bend the knee bow down obey

15:57

listen to their intermediate Lord And

so they get, again, these two sets

of relationships that are being done here.

One the feudal, the other more menorial.

And I agree with Val. It is very

personal. And I also try

to say it's also often based on promises.

And that's at the core of this chapter. Theon

has broken his promise of being a family

member. Then he might not have, you know,

he didn't make it himself originally. He was

assigned to be a ward. But

he was a family member, but

16:28

an unhappy family member. So all families aren't happy,

I keep saying. And

these other people, though, are also family members. You

know, that the medieval term is familia for all

16:37

these people that belonged to a lord. And

16:41

they have their special relationship as

16:43

well. And the higher powered

16:45

ones have theirs. But it's all based on

16:47

promises that we break or keep. And

16:50

the two promises that are set up to be broken are both

16:52

by Rika and Osha. They break

those promises and break their promises quite

16:57

quickly. Right. Now,

said these two things apart. You said feudal

and menorial, is that right? Right. Of

relating to manor? Yeah,

are all just words that you have to just keep remembering. And

feudal is an awful term, too. I

And it's feudal is based on the fief. And

game of thrones isn't quite medieval

structures, but it's similar. Okay.

They have these lands and territories that is personed

out among the various lords. So

I think this almost relates to maybe

I think it's important to call out here

that Ned Stark, for all of

the grief he gets for being a

bad politician, was actually really good at

being the lord of the gods. of Winterfell.

In the first book, we

hear him, he's feasting people at

his table. He's not

showing too much favor to one Lord.

When they're riding along the King's Road,

he'll ride alongside this house, and then

he'll ride alongside that house for a

while. And they

love him. They absolutely love

him in a way that

they're never going to love Theon, right? I

think that's true. I think that's something

that also makes this world of Westeros very

rich is that the politics

of one of the Seven Kingdoms is not

like that of the others. They each have

their own flavor. And

I think that was also true

in the past, right? Different

places had different value

systems to some degree. I mean,

they might all say share, like if

we're talking about medieval Europe, they might

share Christian values. But how that played

out in their own individual area could

differ, right? What was important and what

wasn't. And so I like that

each of the Seven Kingdoms has a kind of,

I mean, it's a different

geography, different climate in some cases that

I mean, that also is kind of

an interesting aspect. But they just end

up with these distinct cultures. And

I think it's one of those things that like the

people who are most critical of Ned Stark seem to

be people from the south, they're not from the

north. And so like, it's like they

don't get him or something. Well, he's mad at

southern politics. There's no question about that. They're

kind of like, like, I mean, in

a way, they're kind of like, oh, yeah, he's a lord,

he's powerful, but he's sort of like a country bumpkin or

something. Like, they just think of him as like

being from, I don't know, the far reaches. And

so because his politics isn't their politics,

and like when he was in the

south, he didn't do what people expected,

right? You know, there's that whole discussion

of whether he should have taken the Iron Throne when he had

the chance. And he's just like, I don't want to. But

in the north, he's admired for that, right?

So it's the complexity of

politics, right? What is admired?

fired and what isn't? And knowing your constituencies

like yeah, I would agree that Starks. A

phenomenal lord and he is just what the
