Fed up with heavy, cumbersome dresses, in the 1850’s Amelia Bloomer took the fashion industry by storm when she began wearing and recommending *gasp* …. pants.  These “turkish trousers” quickly became known as “bloomers” in her honor.   These pants were one of the first steps in dress reform leading to the freedom of movement and choice American woman have in their clothing today.
