0:26
getting away from it all? In
0:29
fact, there is a
0:31
morgue on every cruise ship. After
0:34
all, people die everywhere. Why
0:37
wouldn't they die on a cruise ship
0:39
in the Bahamas? This
0:42
new podcast has all that in
0:44
murder. It's
0:48
called Slaycation and it's

mysterious deaths that took

1:11
and what the

fuck stories of vacations gone

horribly wrong. From
1:19
the twisted tale of Harold and
1:21
Tony Henthorn, whose romantic anniversary in

the Rocky Mountains ended with one
1:26
of them falling off a cliff,

adventure ended underwater, each
1:39
episode of Slaycation will have you
1:41
asking, accident or
1:43
murder? But

Welcome to Human Monsters and
4:12
welcome to another Double Trouble episode
4:14
of the Human Monsters Podcast. This
4:17
week's episode will feature two criminals
4:20
and then two more who can
4:23
honestly only be described as trouble.
4:26
Their motives are so bizarre and
4:29
their crimes so senseless that in
4:31
the end they got
4:33
what they deserved. We
4:37
are, as always, grateful for the

with the show. Part
4:57
1. The Case
4:59
Against Raul Mote In
5:04
July 2010, the largest
5:06
manhunt in British history
5:09
was launched to find
5:11
the elusive Raul Mote.
5:14
He had already killed and
5:17
his open hatred for police convinced
5:20
authorities that he will
5:22
for sure kill again. Raul
5:25
had nothing left to lose. The
5:29
case regarding Raul Mote is one that
5:32
is well known and during
5:34
the time the events take place, many
5:37
youngsters who were thinking
5:39
about becoming police officers
5:41
took a double take when it came to
5:44
crime fighting as a career. Raul
5:47
Mote was born in Newcastle,
5:49
which is in the northern part of England,
5:52
on the 17th of June 1968. He
5:56
grew up with his brother Angus,
5:58
who described Raul as
6:00
an outgoing and generous soul with
6:03
a great sense of humor. Others
6:06
would, however, say that he
6:08
was far from an angel. Raoul
6:14
committed acts of animal cruelty
6:17
and arson as a child.
6:20
The two brothers were mostly
6:22
raised by their maternal grandmother
6:25
under less-than-desirable circumstances.
6:29
They had what they needed, and
6:31
their grandmother provided them to
6:33
her best ability with food,
6:36
clothing, and a warm bed. Their
6:39
grandmother was a stabilizing factor
6:41
in their lives, because
6:43
Raoul would never really know his
6:45
father. His father
6:47
was a man named Peter Blake.
6:50
Peter would claim that he never
6:53
knew Raoul's mother, Josephine Healy. When
6:56
she was pregnant, she plainly
6:58
refused to disclose any information
7:00
about him to anyone once
7:03
she discovered she was with
7:05
child. His mother
7:07
had mental illness issues and
7:10
once even burnt all Raoul's
7:12
toys and ended up rejecting
7:14
him, which is the reason
7:16
he ended up with his grandmother. His
7:20
mother would continue to live with another
7:22
man only a few doors down from
7:24
his grandmother. Raoul
7:26
must have experienced abandonment
7:29
issues, which only aggravated
7:31
his bad behavior later in life.
7:37
Raoul and Angus were
7:39
close as children, but
7:42
as they grew older, Raoul
7:44
became obsessed with bodybuilding.
7:48
Within the bodybuilding community, he
7:50
formed new friends and alliances,
7:53
and he would eventually become a bouncer. Angus,
7:56
on the other hand, Went
7:58
to university to follow a
8:00
law. more academic career. Not
8:03
all bouncers wrote the are
8:05
looking for sites some do
8:07
their jobs effectively and D
8:09
s to wait situations. but
8:11
for Rebel it was an
8:13
opportunity to vent his frustrations.
8:19
Role is not stay long
8:21
as a bouncer and instead
8:23
started a tree trimming business
8:26
which he called Mr. Trim.
8:29
He was struggling with mental illness
8:31
at this point. It was self
8:33
aware enough to reach out to
8:35
Social Services for help which shows
8:38
a sense of vulnerability is well,
8:41
It does not appear that
8:43
he received the help he
8:46
needed to deal with the
8:48
childhood abandonment issues and those
8:51
who knew him became seriously
8:53
concerned about his mental health.
8:55
He became paranoid, in secure,
8:58
and obsessive and incredibly sensitive
9:00
is distrust in all around
9:03
him grew and he began
9:05
believing he was alone in
9:08
the world. Friends
9:10
said he suffered frequent bouts
9:12
of depression and all he
9:14
wanted to be was a
9:16
family man. When
9:19
he finally did have children, he
9:21
apparently was a good father. But
9:23
there was always that undercurrent
9:26
of paranoia, especially towards the
9:28
police who he thought were
9:30
out to persecute him. This
9:34
could be attributed to the fact
9:36
that he was working as a
9:38
doorman and had frequent interactions with
9:40
cops and he was also using
9:42
steroids at this point. he
9:45
also had been into
9:47
documented instances of road
9:49
rage and his girlfriend
9:51
was beaten on a
9:53
regular basis he was
9:55
jealous and controlling and
9:57
was was once or
10:00
arrested for beating up his child, for
10:03
which he spent 18 weeks in prison.
10:06
In total, he had been arrested 12 times
10:08
in the previous decade, and
10:11
of those times he received 7
10:14
charges and he
10:16
had only been convicted once. At 6'3 and
10:18
weighing 280 pounds, he was a formidable adversary.
10:29
On the 1st of July 2010, at the age of
10:31
37, the wheels finally came off the Raul
10:37
Mote Ferris Wheel of Madness.
10:41
At this point, he had three children
10:43
and this was the day he was
10:46
released from Durham Prison. Northumbrie
10:49
police had already been warned
10:51
that he intended to cause
10:53
serious bodily harm to his
10:55
partner. It was
10:58
not actually his current partner,
11:00
but a girlfriend called Samantha
11:02
Stobart, who was 22 years
11:04
old. It was suspected
11:07
that just before he was
11:09
released, Samantha had told him
11:11
something that had infuriated him
11:14
and while in prison, this
11:16
comment stewed into a plan
11:18
of revenge in his mind.
11:24
Samantha and Raul had been in
11:27
a six year relationship before he
11:29
was incarcerated and with
11:31
his personality and the huge age
11:33
difference, it's not difficult to imagine
11:36
that she had been dominated
11:38
and abused. The
11:40
couple had a daughter together before
11:43
he went to prison, but once
11:45
he was behind bars, Samantha decided
11:47
to end the relationship. Like
11:51
all abusers, Raul was furious
11:54
because he believed he was
11:56
in control and should call
11:58
all the shots. including
12:00
when the relationship ends. Unfortunately
12:04
for him, Samantha had
12:06
already begun seeing a
12:08
29-year-old karate instructor named
12:11
Chris Brown. He
12:13
had only recently relocated to
12:15
Newcastle, and it was
12:17
while canvassing for clients that he
12:20
met Samantha. Samantha
12:22
must have felt that she finally
12:24
had a strong and kind man
12:26
to protect her, and that
12:29
from prison, Raoul could not
12:31
hurt her. She
12:33
had no idea that one of
12:35
his 24-year-old friends and
12:37
a former business partner by the
12:39
name of Carl Ness had
12:42
been enlisted to spy on her
12:44
and to report back to him.
12:47
Raoul undoubtedly knew by the time
12:50
he left the prison
12:52
gates that, regardless
12:54
of the fact that they were no longer
12:56
together, Samantha had a new
12:58
man in her life. His
13:04
possessive nature and the
13:06
overpowering feeling that he had
13:08
lost control of the situation
13:11
made locating them after release
13:13
his first priority. He
13:16
not only had a grudge against
13:18
the couple, but also against the
13:20
North Bridge police, who he believed
13:22
were keeping him away from his
13:25
children unnecessarily. It's
13:27
a sickening trait of violent offenders
13:29
to not give a shit about
13:31
their children until they can be
13:33
used as capital. Samantha
13:40
had been so in fear of her
13:42
life when Raoul came out of prison
13:44
that she told him she was seeing
13:46
a police officer. The
13:49
motivation for the lie came from
13:51
a place of utter fear, but
13:54
this information just put fuel on
13:56
the fire of hatred for anyone
13:58
in a police uniform. Raoul
14:04
did not take the white
14:06
lie very well. In
14:09
a Facebook post just after he was
14:11
released, he wrote, just
14:13
got out of jail, lost everything.
14:17
My business, my property, and
14:19
to top it all off, my
14:21
last of six years has gone
14:24
off with the copper who sent
14:26
me down. Samantha's
14:28
lie had suddenly grown a
14:31
tale, but Mote was
14:33
not just threatening them. He
14:35
was openly declaring war against all
14:37
police officers. He had
14:40
begun to build a persona of
14:42
self-righteous rage. On
14:46
Friday the 2nd of July 2010, Chris
14:49
and Samantha were visiting their neighbors late
14:51
at night. As
14:53
Samantha and Chris were enjoying their
14:56
new relationship with friends, Raoul
14:58
was planning his attack on the young
15:00
lovers. In the early
15:02
hours of Saturday, the 3rd of July, Carl
15:06
Ness, who had continued
15:08
to spy on the couple, drove
15:10
Raoul in a stolen white transit
15:12
van to Samantha's home. As
15:15
Carl waited in the vehicle, Raoul
15:17
began looking for the couple. He
15:20
was armed with a sawed-off
15:22
shot gun with homemade cartridges,
15:25
which Carl had
15:27
helped him to
15:30
get. He stayed
15:32
outside the property for half an hour and
15:35
could hear the couple socializing with
15:37
their friends inside. He
15:40
waited till 2.40 a.m. until
15:42
the couple emerged and approached
15:45
them from behind. Samantha
15:47
saw him approach and tried to
15:50
warn Chris, but the two shotgun
15:52
blasts ensured Chris never stood
15:54
a chance. As
15:57
Chris fell dead on the ground, Samantha
15:59
ran away. ran back into her neighbor's
16:01
home to hide, because she
16:03
knew he was coming for her next.
16:07
Raoul was, however, not done
16:09
with Chris and
16:11
shot another cartridge into the back of
16:13
his head. Raoul
16:16
then shot two more shots through
16:18
the window of which
16:20
one hit Samantha's arm and
16:23
in her stomach. Raoul
16:25
claimed he never wanted to kill her
16:27
because he just did not want other
16:30
men to see her body again, especially
16:33
in a swimsuit. Carl,
16:36
who had heard the gunshots,
16:38
drove away, leaving his buddy
16:41
behind. Raoul flagged down
16:43
a taxi, knowing the police were
16:45
on their way. Both
16:47
Carl and Raoul went to the same
16:49
guy to get them out of this
16:51
fix. 23-year-old
16:54
mechanic Kareem Akin to
16:57
procure a getaway vehicle. A
17:02
manhunt was immediately launched for
17:04
Raoul. 160
17:07
officers were deployed, making
17:10
it the biggest manhunt in the history
17:12
of Britain. 15
17:14
other regional police officers. The
17:17
total amount of this exercise would
17:19
cost the taxpayers was £1.1 million.
17:26
Residents were warned not to approach him
17:29
because he was armed and dangerous.
17:35
During a search of his home, police
17:37
found a noose in his loft and
17:39
a suicide note. The
17:41
note to Samantha sounded more like
17:44
emotional blackmail than a declaration of
17:46
love. By
17:48
Sunday, the 4th of July, 12.40 p.m.,
17:52
the three fugitives were travelling in a
17:54
black Lexus on the Ait 1. By
17:58
now, Raoul felt he had... Nothing
18:00
left to lose and his
18:03
first victim, 42-year-old father of
18:05
two, David Rathbone, was
18:07
sitting in his patrol vehicle when
18:10
Raoul spotted him. He
18:12
was an experienced officer. The
18:14
Raoul jumped out of the Lexus
18:16
and shot the officer twice in
18:19
the face at point-blank range. Moat
18:22
thought he had killed him and
18:25
the officer played dead until his shooter
18:27
left. Once the
18:29
coast was clear, he made his way to
18:31
his radio and called for help. It
18:34
would take many operations to remove over
18:37
200 shotgun pellets from
18:39
his face. He
18:41
was permanently blinded from the attack.
18:49
Twelve minutes before he saw his next
18:51
victim, he called 999.
18:53
He took responsibility for
18:56
shooting Chris because he thought he was
18:58
a police officer and that he intended
19:00
to hunt down any cops he could
19:03
find and identified
19:05
himself as the Barkley
19:07
gunman and that
19:09
he was going to wage war on the police.
19:13
He told them he was not
19:15
on the run. As a matter of fact,
19:18
he was coming for them. The
19:21
call that is available online is
19:23
mostly Raoul Ranting, claiming
19:25
he is not at fault and
19:28
that he was going to turn himself in
19:30
but decided against it. He
19:33
claimed that he tried to go straight for
19:35
the last six years but
19:37
that police would not leave him alone.
19:40
He also said he had two hostages
19:42
and was going to kill more cops.
19:50
What I am talking about is to tell you exactly why
19:52
you are doing what I have done. This
20:00
gentleman that I shot last night, the car he has
20:02
got there, right? He's on the lead, right? So, yeah,
20:04
if you ever have to risk harassment, it's just more
20:06
leaders alone. I went three or six feet to the
20:08
road when I'm back there, and I'm trying to be
20:10
best I'm normalizing. You just won't let up, right? You
20:13
won't leave it up for five minutes. I can't drive down
20:15
the street without the blue parking lights, you know? You let
20:17
the stitches up for you, you didn't call the systemers up.
20:20
The first of them are always, right, the street's under there
20:22
when one of your officers... Yeah. Okay.
20:25
...when you got them, right? But the thing
20:27
is, you know, it's been going on, it's been going on for
20:29
a while. I went to jail, right? Okay. ...and
20:32
I just picked up my unit for a heavy kid, which
20:34
I didn't do. Right, right. I
20:36
went to jail for something I didn't do. Now,
20:38
I've got a perfect community order, right? Yeah, yeah.
20:41
But what happened is me and somebody just flushing
20:43
with me, but I went to jail, and then three to four
20:45
weeks, we fell off that comet to them and let it sound.
20:47
They said, you know, how was the re-trial getting up here? You
20:49
said, me and my son were going to get up. I
20:52
went to jail, right? No, you got to... You're telling
20:54
them an exercise, you're losing it, eh? Yeah. Right.
20:57
Uh-huh. Well, I went to
20:59
jail longer than I should have done it for something I
21:01
didn't do, right? We'd justify that in your own head. Yeah.
21:03
And meanwhile, while I'm doing that for my missus, see, I'm
21:06
going to say, well, what are you after, right? And
21:08
then when I come out, right, she's
21:10
minding it up here that you're going to set you up using
21:12
him. Yeah. And, you
21:14
know, then this is that we're feeling, because he's a mother of
21:16
a father, and he's kicking us all over the place. Okay,
21:19
okay. Right. And I've had nothing to prove to her, but I've
21:21
had a good relationship with her for six years, which is why
21:23
I was scared of her. I've gone scared. I've had a total
21:25
of a bit like before. I've walked the business. Right, right. And
21:28
I've had a petty shock then. A new police
21:30
have come to look at me over the years. Okay.
21:32
You've walked the look. And now you've been using
21:34
your missus. Now I didn't need to shoot her
21:36
like that, right? Okay, okay. Right. Take
21:39
the number, right? I'll show you, right? I'll take the
21:41
number, right? You're here to take off the ballistic of
21:43
your ultimate nose, nose covering it, right? I want to
21:45
give you half the power, then. There was only meant
21:47
to get a compensation, but no, you're not going to
21:49
be around with a few years, right? You're
21:52
the compensation. Okay. Yeah. I'm
21:55
not going to follow this critical. I'm
21:57
not happy about it. I couldn't be like this. You
22:00
know what I mean? I can't have the right to
22:02
try to use critical. You know? I
22:04
couldn't be in that, but the fuck I'm out of it.
22:06
I'm not coming in alive. You just hustle me for so
22:08
many years. Come anywhere near me now, shall you? I've
22:11
got two hostages at the minute, right? Come anywhere near me,
22:13
I'll kill them as well. I'm coming to get you. I'm
22:15
not on the run. I am coming to get you. You've
22:18
been late-me all well. You've been late-me
22:20
doing the attack. It is just one
22:22
easily out of place. You're going in
22:24
wrong. Can you confirm we've got two
22:26
hostages? I've got none. I've got two
22:28
hostages, yes. Right. And where are
22:30
you? I'm not going to tell
22:33
you where I am. I'm going to get through storm on
22:35
you, right? Yes. I've got to find the fuck with you. Can
22:37
I just confirm who you are? Can you give me your
22:39
date of birth, please? Yes, it's the 17th of June
22:41
1973. Right.
22:44
OK, then. Thank you very much. I
22:46
am really sorry for what that was done. That's not
22:49
what I made. Right. Well, I've got
22:51
a phone that has other idiots in the favour. You can't
22:53
have one in the group. You're already having
22:55
a, you know, you start having to control them and
22:57
all the rest of it. They
22:59
were accused, right? I heard rumours in here that they
23:01
were sleeping on my son. OK, right. I
23:03
thought the phone was on. Yes, yes. And then
23:05
he had the same rumours as well. But he
23:07
didn't believe that was true, but he was actually
23:09
trying to get into it. So let's just make
23:11
it out that way when he was the first
23:13
one to run and hide upstairs, really pointing you
23:15
at everybody else. You know what I mean? He
23:18
didn't stand there and let it go before you make it. I had a
23:20
problem. I would have shot him because I do believe he was getting
23:22
into it. He did a lot of nonsense going on
23:24
by my father, being in jail. She's changed.
23:26
She's got all changed. And every time I've
23:28
thought of her in five days, she wouldn't
23:31
let us anywhere near the fence. Right, right. She
23:33
wouldn't discuss anything. And she was threatening for one
23:35
of your officers. Yes, yes. Right? Now I've had
23:37
enough. I've had enough. I've done real good. I've done
23:40
well. I've done all the different things. You know what
23:42
I mean? I've lost everything through use. They
23:44
just won't leave us alone, right? So there is a
23:46
huge truth to me. You can be answered before that
23:48
kid that was on the phone. Right. You know what
23:51
I mean? OK, we are trying to help you. Yes.
23:54
Yeah, try to help us. You've got a huge amount of people
23:56
that need to do my stuff in. And I was going to
23:59
do it. I found out about
24:01
him, copy, and what was going on. And as soon as
24:03
I found out, I was like, no, you
24:05
don't have too much from me. You've had
24:07
too much from me. You'll get your son's dick in this,
24:09
right? You'll get your son's dick in this. No, we don't
24:11
want to do that. We don't want to do
24:13
that. I think you're the one who needed to kill me, son, but I'm going to give
24:15
you the chance. I am wrong. What was that now?
24:23
Sometime in the early 80s, REO
24:25
Speedwagon's airplane made an unannounced,
24:28
middle-of-the-night landing. This is my friend Kyle
24:30
McLaughlin, the star of Twin Peaks. And
24:33
he's telling me about how he discovered a
24:35
real-life Twin Peaks in rural North Carolina, not
24:37
far from where he filmed Blue Velvet. What
24:39
was on the plane was copious amounts of
24:41
drugs coming in from South America. Supposedly
24:44
Pablo Escobar went looking for other spots,
24:46
quiet, out of the way places to
24:48
bring in his cocaine. My
24:53
name is Joshua Davis, and I'm an investigative
24:55
reporter. Kyle and I
24:57
talk all the time about the strange things we
25:00
come across, but nothing was quite as strange as
25:02
what we found in Varnam Town, North Carolina. There's
25:05
crooked cops, brother against brother. Everyone's
25:07
got a story to tell, but does
25:09
the truth even exist? Welcome

Crime Capsule. History is
25:50
so interesting, it's criminal. Hi,
25:55
listeners. I'm Vanessa Richardson, host of
25:58
the podcast Serial Killers. Like
26:00
many of you, I'm fascinated by the
26:02
darker side of humanity. What causes someone
26:05
to develop such deadly desires and why
26:07
they decide to act on them? For
26:09
the past six years, I've been able
26:11
to explore these curiosities weekly,
26:14
tapping into the mental states of
26:16
the world's most notorious killers,
26:19
examining their backgrounds and habits,
26:21
searching for answers. If
26:24
you haven't had a chance to check out
26:26
our show, there's truly no better time to

26:44
shooting the officer, Moat called 999
26:46
again. He
26:48
asked the operator, The
26:50
cops were painfully aware he had not only
26:53
two hostages with him, but
27:05
an unwavering vendetta against the
27:07
police. No one
27:10
knew the so-called hostages were
27:12
actually accomplices, but used as
27:14
leverage. A press
27:16
release was issued warning the public about
27:19
the dangerous man on the run, and
27:21
soon the abandoned Lexus was discovered at
27:23
the side of the road. While
27:26
on the run, Moat met up with
27:28
a friend of his named Andy McAllister,
27:31
and he gave him a 49-page
27:34
document, which he said was his
27:36
side of the story. In
27:38
the manifesto, he said the public
27:40
did not need to fear him.
27:47
A 10,000-pound reward was offered,
27:49
and a two-mile area was
27:51
cordoned off. On
27:53
the 5th of July, Samantha even made
27:56
a plea to Moat from her hospital
27:58
bed to stop the madness. On
28:01
the same day, he robbed a chip
28:03
shop near Blight. He
28:06
stole food and witnesses could
28:08
see his so-called hostages were
28:10
accomplices. Kareem
28:12
and Carl helped Mote to set
28:14
up camp, and to this
28:16
day, their loyalty towards him remains a mystery.
28:20
Police, however, knew he
28:22
was familiar with sleeping rough, and
28:25
they discovered abandoned campsites in the
28:27
area. Mote had
28:29
also been sleeping in gardens and
28:32
sneaking into spare rooms of
28:34
homes that looked unoccupied at
28:36
the time. The
28:41
police used every available resource
28:43
from dogs to helicopters, but
28:46
Mote seemed to stay one step ahead. They
28:49
suspected that they would catch him
28:52
near Rothbury, and many arrests
28:54
were made of people who in
28:56
any way assisted Mote. Carl
28:58
and Kareem were quickly caught,
29:01
but they pled their innocence. Cops
29:04
called bullshit because the evidence was
29:06
very clear that the two accomplices
29:09
were not hostages. Apart
29:11
from them leaving notes to their loved
29:13
ones explaining they were helping
29:16
their friend who was on the
29:18
run, they were walking down a
29:20
country lane wearing bright clothing and
29:23
unfamiliar to the locals. On
29:28
the morning of the 6th of July, the sleepy
29:31
and rural little village of
29:34
Rothbury was inundated with police
29:36
patrolling the streets, parks,
29:38
and fields. On
29:42
Wednesday, the 7th of July, Mote
29:44
was still on the run, managing to
29:46
avoid the cops, but he was running out
29:48
of time. At one
29:50
of the campsites, he had left
29:53
a dictaphone complaining about the portrayal
29:55
of the media of him, and
29:58
thus he would kill him. member of
30:00
the public as revenge. A
30:03
gag order was immediately placed on all
30:05
press and media. On
30:10
the 8th of July villagers were
30:12
terrified, even avoiding drain
30:14
covers. Some reported they
30:16
had seen him move at night
30:19
and there were reports that he
30:21
had stolen vegetables from gardens. On
30:27
the 9th of July a local
30:29
resident spotted a man near the
30:31
riverbank that she believed was Raul
30:33
Mote. As soon as
30:35
Mote saw the approaching police vehicles
30:38
he went down on his knees and put
30:40
the gun to his head. That
30:42
would be the beginning of a six-hour
30:44
standoff. Police wanted
30:46
to apprehend him alive and
30:49
police negotiators tried to convince
30:51
him the best would be
30:53
to surrender. In the early
30:56
hours of Saturday morning with very little
30:58
light to spare a special
31:00
taper was used but it
31:02
did not work. At 1.15
31:05
a.m. a shot rang out as
31:08
Raul Mote finally decided to take his
31:10
own life. Karl
31:15
Ness and Kareem A. Wan were
31:17
convicted of conspiracy to murder, attempted
31:20
murder, and armed murder.
31:23
March 2011 Karl was sentenced
31:26
to 20 years in prison and
31:28
Kareem was sentenced to 40 years in
31:30
prison. In 2012 police constable
31:33
Rothman took his own life because
31:35
he could not cope with his
31:38
blindness. By proxy he
31:40
became another victim of a man who
31:43
thought the world owed him everything and
31:45
that he was the victim in it all. Part
31:52
2. The case
31:54
against Nico Jenkins. One
31:57
look at Nico Jenkins face and and
32:00
you just know this is a man not to be messed
32:02
with. Still, his
32:04
story is tragic, full of violence,
32:07
and a massive failure by the system.
32:10
But we are not here to judge
32:12
or condemn criminals. Well,
32:14
okay, I do judge sometimes. We
32:17
tell the stories and let you decide how
32:19
you feel about the perpetrator. Please
32:22
let us know on our socials what
32:24
your thoughts are about this enigma of
32:26
a man. The
32:32
man who has had more than 50
32:35
million views on YouTube was
32:37
born in Colorado, but
32:39
grew up in Omaha, Nebraska on the
32:42
16th of September 1986. He
32:45
had five sisters and the kind
32:47
of childhood that is prone to
32:49
produce dysfunction. His
32:51
household was a dome of violence, with
32:54
not just him being physically abused,
32:57
but having to watch violent abuse
32:59
around him. All
33:01
family members, including his parents,
33:03
who were Laura McGee and
33:06
David Jenkins, resolved
33:08
issues with fists, kicks,
33:11
and other forms of physical
33:13
retribution. Often, Nico
33:15
would have to intervene as
33:18
his parents were in a full-on physical
33:20
fight. He remembered cleaning
33:22
up blood from the floor at
33:25
the age of four, and this is
33:27
a memory that remained with him for the rest of
33:29
his life. The
33:35
statistics regarding his entire
33:37
lineage are jaw-dropping. Nico's
33:40
great-grandfather was Levi Levering, who
33:42
was a well-respected leader of
33:44
the Cherokee tribe, had
33:46
38 of his direct
33:48
descendants as convicted criminals. In
33:51
Total, they had committed 633 separate crimes since
33:54
1969. We're
34:01
Niko was seven years old. He
34:04
took a loaded shotgun to school.
34:06
Safely, no one was hurt, but
34:08
the authorities believed that placing him
34:10
in foster care would be the
34:12
best option for him. His
34:15
family was already well known for
34:17
their criminal activities, but it was
34:19
the first time he goes name
34:21
would come up in the criminal
34:24
index. While in foster
34:26
care, he spoke for the first
34:28
time about thoughts of hurting himself
34:30
and to hurt others. Indeed, he
34:33
also wanted to teach his classmates
34:35
of lessons that had nothing to
34:37
do with geography or social studies.
34:39
He wanted to teach them with
34:42
his gun. You're
34:44
never too young to be an asshole. He.
34:46
Was constantly wedding his bed,
34:49
which was attributed to anxiety
34:51
at home and he would
34:53
eventually be diagnosed with bipolar
34:55
disorder, which is the first
34:57
of many diagnoses he would
34:59
be given. For.
35:04
Most of his childhood he bounced
35:06
around from foster home. A foster
35:08
home, but most of the time
35:10
he would be kicked out of
35:12
these places of refuge because of
35:14
his violent behavior. He joined his
35:16
first game at the age of
35:18
eleven, and from this point on
35:20
he was always in possession of
35:22
a weapon. He was
35:25
arrested numerous times for arson,
35:27
weapons charges, and robbery, which
35:29
meant he was in and
35:31
out of juvenile detention centres
35:33
all the time. He
35:35
had a habit of running away and
35:38
being able to avoid being caught for
35:40
months on end, but he was always
35:42
brought back to complete his sentences. The
35:45
should have left him where he was. At
35:51
the age of seventeen, Nico committed
35:53
to armed carjackings, for which he
35:56
was sentenced to fourteen to fifteen
35:58
years in prison. At
36:00
first he was sent to a
36:02
juvenile detention center and so he
36:05
was nineteen years old, After which
36:07
he was sent to an adult
36:09
prison. He was
36:11
not behaving himself. While in
36:13
prison, he took part in
36:15
riots and took up tattooing
36:17
as an extra income. His
36:19
entire face would eventually be
36:21
full of tattoos and mart's
36:23
west from self mutilation. When
36:29
his grandmother died, he was allowed
36:31
to go to a funeral, but
36:33
even then, Niko tried to escape
36:35
by attacking a guard and even
36:37
biting the officer in an attempt
36:39
to get away. His
36:41
antics gained him another five years
36:44
to his sentence, but numerous reports
36:46
have been written about the negative
36:48
effects of being in solitary confinement
36:51
for long periods of times, and
36:53
all concluded that more than a
36:55
week or two will undoubtedly do
36:57
damage to the psyche of the
37:00
prisoner. And Niko was already a
37:02
man with a mind it's in
37:04
serious need of psychiatric help. He
37:07
was actually in solitary confinement
37:10
for a solid to year
37:12
block before you was released.
37:17
He would be released after only
37:19
ten years of a sense of
37:21
is ten years in prison. He
37:23
was in solitary confinement for sixty
37:25
percent of the time. Five
37:27
months before his release, he
37:30
was assessed by psychiatrists and
37:32
psychologists. He was clearly struggling
37:34
with his mental health and
37:36
self harming and would mutilate
37:39
his face. Is suicidal
37:41
thoughts and had reported to staff
37:43
that he wanted to eat the
37:46
hearts of men, women, and children.
37:48
When he was released. Never
37:50
good sign. Niko
37:56
was also known to drink his
37:58
own urine and drink and. Nord
38:00
his own semen on a
38:02
daily basis. I
38:05
know prison grub isn't the greatest.
38:07
But. C'mon. He
38:10
claimed he did this to heighten
38:12
is vitality and to help him
38:14
control his rage. He also claimed
38:17
to worship the Egyptian god or
38:19
Pulses which is represented by a
38:21
snake. White said your. During
38:24
his incarceration, Nico even tried to
38:26
sheep his penis with a blade
38:28
in the shape of the snake.
38:31
Is mutilation and tattoos on his
38:34
face continue to multiply and even
38:36
tried to cut his tongue into
38:38
the shape of that have a
38:41
snake. In other
38:43
words, Forked. He
38:45
told medical staff that he
38:48
continued to have uncontrollable and
38:50
racing thoughts, yet obsessive and
38:52
racing thoughts and continued to
38:55
hear voices. Nico
39:00
himself asked not to be
39:02
released and even asked for
39:04
help, but his please were
39:06
ignored. Even told authorities that
39:08
if they released him he
39:10
was going to kill again.
39:14
Despite knowing all these alarming
39:16
sex, the authorities decided to
39:18
release Nico in July. Twenty
39:20
Third team. Street
39:23
from solitary confinement. What
39:26
boggles the mind is that he
39:28
was released without any probation or
39:30
parole or monitoring of any kind.
39:34
Nico was a free man with his
39:36
life as he pleased in society. As
39:41
family held a huge welcome home
39:43
party for him on the thirtieth
39:45
of July. Twenty thirteen in a
39:47
hotel. His uncle weren't
39:49
even gave him a shot done as
39:51
a welcome home present See how out
39:54
for poll? At
39:57
the party, Nico proclaimed that he wanted
39:59
to move to. Florida, get some
40:01
cash togethers robberies and moved to
40:03
Cuba which is such a random
40:05
plants that it can only make
40:08
sense to the insane. The
40:10
part about him ending up in Florida makes
40:12
sense. On
40:18
the tenth of August, Twenty Third
40:20
Team, his sister Erica Jenkins and
40:22
his cousin Christine Borden's hatched a
40:24
plan to make some quick money.
40:27
The plan was for the two
40:29
women to target two men with
40:31
the promise of sex and then
40:33
to rob them. Erica
40:35
in pristine went to a local
40:38
bar where they met one or
40:40
of back when they are and
40:42
Jorge cause you got use. The.
40:45
Two women convince them to men
40:47
to drive to a private location
40:49
and as they stopped Nico jumped
40:51
out and shot both men in
40:53
the head with the twelve gauge
40:55
shotgun he had just received as
40:57
a present. Couldn't they have given
40:59
him and air fryer instead. Both
41:02
men died instantly and when
41:05
police discover their bodies their
41:07
pockets were turned out, it
41:09
appears that Nico never intended
41:11
just rubs him. He
41:13
wanted to kill both men. There
41:16
was no link to Nico, so he
41:18
carried on with his life as normal.
41:24
Eight days later, he stumbled upon
41:26
Curtis Bradford, who he had spent
41:28
time in prison with. There's
41:31
actually photograph of a to
41:33
them throwing some kind of
41:35
gang sign which ironically resembled
41:37
the sayings of a snake
41:39
at the party. Nico expresses
41:41
to purchase that he wanted
41:43
to commit some robberies and
41:46
Curtis, without hesitation, said yes
41:48
He's always. Curtis,
41:50
Erica, and Nico got into the
41:52
car and someone hands purchase a
41:54
gun. Little the Curtis
41:56
know that the gun was not
41:58
loaded. As they go
42:01
to their destination, Erica suddenly turns
42:03
her gun on Curtis and shoots
42:05
him from behind in the head.
42:08
Apparently Erica was very proud of
42:10
herself because this was her first
42:12
kill. But. Nico was furious
42:15
because he wanted to be the
42:17
one to kill Curtis. Out
42:19
of anger, he grabs his gun and shoots
42:22
Curtis in the back of the head as
42:24
well. A passer
42:26
by would later find purchases body on
42:28
the side of the road and reporters
42:30
who the police. Two
42:36
days after the murder of Curtis,
42:38
Lil Wayne came to town and
42:40
Nico thought this would be an
42:42
amazing way to rob people at
42:44
the concert. He felt,
42:46
however, that his car was not
42:49
smart enough to fit into the
42:51
scene, which gave him the grand
42:53
idea of hijacking another better vehicle
42:56
to be able to blend into
42:58
the crowd. Nico, Christine, Erica, and
43:00
his uncle war and decided to
43:02
stake out Mcdonalds for a possible
43:05
better car to steal. Unfortunately
43:07
for Andrew Krueger per se, ve
43:10
caught the rye and they began
43:12
to follow her. When
43:14
she stopped at a junction, Nico
43:16
jumped out of the car and
43:18
dragged Andrea out of or yes
43:20
you the he shot or four
43:22
times. Nico at war and jumped
43:25
into injuries car as Christine and
43:27
Eric have followed in their car.
43:29
The mother of three who was just
43:32
honor way from work lost your life
43:34
in the attack. Again,
43:39
never committed any robberies and war
43:41
ended up burning the car the
43:43
a just hijacked and other ten
43:45
days would go by. But on
43:47
the thirtieth of August Nico was
43:49
arrested for a fight. he with
43:51
his girlfriend because he threatened to
43:54
kill her. Yet also
43:56
promised to send demonic forces
43:58
to his girlfriend's parents. Well.
44:02
Who hasn't wish demonic forces upon
44:04
their in laws? At this point,
44:06
police were still unaware that he
44:08
had been the driving force behind
44:11
the murders of for People. Well,
44:16
Nico was in jail for the
44:18
threats. Police started to suspect that
44:21
the unhinged man with a face
44:23
full of graffiti could be involved
44:25
in the crimes that have been
44:28
committed around Newcastle. Security.
44:30
Footage showed that Nichols mom
44:32
had been the one to
44:34
purchase the exact same ammunition
44:36
used in all four murders.
44:38
The Jenkins family are already
44:40
notorious and with Nico in
44:42
custody, police decided to put
44:44
him in an interrogation room
44:47
and ask him a couple
44:49
of questions. On
44:53
a third of September, the interview
44:56
with Nico begins and it would
44:58
last an entire eight hours. Of
45:00
footage is readily available online, and
45:02
Nico is the one doing most
45:05
of a talking. He
45:07
claims that he was not involved and
45:09
a he only was there to give
45:11
the intelligence. Elsa claims
45:13
that all the killings were part
45:15
of a ritual sacrifice. He
45:17
also blamed the murders on his sister
45:19
and his cousin. Then
45:22
he claims that he did indeed
45:24
commit the murders in the name
45:27
of a pulses. But once again,
45:29
he changed his story and claims
45:31
that he committed the murders as
45:34
revenge on the correctional services who
45:36
should never have let him out.
45:39
He repeatedly told the interviewers I
45:41
told you I should never have
45:44
been let out. I
45:46
Am going to kill someone. Go.
45:50
on there are laws Right
46:00
now, that's what I'm going to say, that's what I
46:02
told you, they need to hurry up. When I'm in this
46:04
mine for, I'm going to ask you this, it's clear.
46:06
I answered another thing. When
46:10
I'm about to leave, Sheriff, you're going to
46:12
need to be honest with me. I'm going to have to, we're
46:14
going to make this work, because it's just totally what it's had.
46:17
You're going to have to call me what you should have, and
46:19
if you don't have that, I know what I have to do.
46:24
These are my two family members. What's that very now? Okay.
46:27
Okay, they're brothers. I don't want them. He
46:29
was in an automatic case. He was
46:31
a severe victim. He just documented getting
46:34
an intervention. I never felt it. All
46:38
right, he goes into it. Like, even when they all arrested me, I don't know if
46:40
he was on the team. He was acting up and
46:42
he was pulling us off the house. You know what I'm
46:44
saying? So, I just don't really exist. That's
46:47
why he didn't want to talk down at the jail,
46:50
because there's family members. My dad, this is on my
46:52
father's side. Okay. I did them on the set,
46:54
all right? I'm
46:56
going to make you a fresh pot, too. That's
46:58
not the best. Okay. I'm going to
47:00
make you a fresh pot. Here it is. All right?
47:02
I need to speak to her superior, so, about
47:04
this. The ones that I know that can... He's
47:07
my boss. This is a man. The ones that I
47:09
know that can make the people jump
47:11
in. First of all, this is going
47:13
to be a good night, but you're going to get
47:15
everything that you need to get my family closer.
47:18
But I want you to understand something, and I'm going to say
47:20
this very clearly. I was
47:22
not there. The only thing I was
47:24
was, what you're saying is not
47:27
your saying. You're saying... Right.
47:32
Okay. My religion, because I'm an absolute
47:34
brother. That's the underworld. I'm the one.
47:36
The black mark. This was them. My
47:38
new cousins. I know that house was
47:40
there. When I got
47:42
served, searched for. Right. This
47:45
was their ritual
47:48
sacrifice. And I'm
47:50
going to give you from A to Z. This is not an old, cool
47:53
chase. This is the real real writer.
47:56
Okay? You need
47:58
to... Okay. this
48:00
right advisory column, okay? Okay.
48:02
I never knew who knew what, who knew where.
48:05
Anything I gave him was the intelligence. Okay,
48:08
describe this to me. What, what? This, this
48:10
man know me. Describe it to me. Describe
48:13
the weather. Yeah. We've
48:15
got high, high
48:17
point issues,
48:19
nine millimeters of
48:22
smoke. He
48:27
was a serious one. We
48:32
inspired him when I first got out.
48:35
I gave him intelligence. Like I
48:37
said, I didn't know who was coming, what was coming,
48:39
who was going to do wrong. All I
48:41
did was give him intelligence. What's not
48:43
intelligence? Intelligence of where you will be the
48:45
best window of opportunity. What
48:48
roles to take in if you're going to do something around
48:50
West, you have cameras on the lights. As
48:53
you know, you take for
48:56
military ad, it takes you all the
48:59
way out with no cameras pitch black.
49:01
You realize that right. So
49:03
if you're coming from that crime scene, you can hit straight
49:06
out for straight house for it takes for all the way
49:08
back to the military have all the way to the Walmart.
49:12
That's all from right off the interstate. They've got Walmart
49:14
right off the interstate. I'm
49:16
a military. Yeah. So my point is,
49:19
things like that, the intelligence of
49:21
what passes, you know what I mean?
49:23
So avoid cameras. Things that make you are
49:25
close to this time. Margarita. They
49:27
walked out to the corner for that. Because
49:31
the point was to get the get
49:34
her to an isolated place. So
49:36
I'm saying to her, and obviously, you're
49:39
out there, anything else, especially
49:41
on the label, once you leave off
49:44
a main way, it is black, black.
49:47
So it was a perfect opportunity.
49:50
And that's why y'all don't even understand, man.
49:52
I don't understand my heart disease for me,
49:54
but I'm portraying my family. You understand? It's
49:56
not just me. I understand what families get
49:58
closer, you know, but I literally He betrayed
50:00
my family and my bloodline. After?
50:11
You alright? Yeah, I'm good. I'm
50:13
good right now. That's
50:17
what I understand, isn't it? All of us? I
50:19
was in the grass one person, and all I knew was
50:21
help from the people here. Would
50:31
you like to find somebody? Or something
50:33
in my head or something? He did. You
50:37
were working on him? Yeah, but I'll tell you
50:39
one more, what I just did was I was testifying.
50:44
I said the first time that I've ever aided a
50:46
system of all forces in my life. Any
50:49
jury, any judge, any prosecutor will be, once
50:51
I sit on his head and testify to
50:53
you, it's go, any jury's not
50:55
going to look at me and say,
50:57
oh, he's telling me for him. With
51:00
my history and my reputation, in
51:02
this first time testimony of every single system of all
51:04
forces, and everything that I'm saying is
51:06
accurate. Okay. I
51:10
understand. It's here. Listen to me. Listen, listen,
51:12
listen. I've listened to you for a long
51:14
time. It's time to heal us from here. So
51:17
like what you said, if you
51:19
don't tell me, what the heck happened out there, and
51:22
if you don't tell me,
51:24
what the heck happened? Are you
51:26
looking at this thing? Is it this little
51:30
robbery went past? Is this
51:32
someone's panic? Did
51:35
something really stupid? Now's the time
51:37
because otherwise you're right. They're going to
51:39
look at Nico Jenkins as a flat,
51:41
funny. You
51:46
don't realize I got Nico Jenkins? Do
51:49
you not realize that? I
51:52
got Nico Jenkins. I
51:54
got you. Who do you mean you
51:57
got me? I got you. I got you. I
51:59
got the murder scene. I
52:01
got your DNA in the car. Sir. I
52:05
got the weapon. I
52:07
got Nico Jenkins. I don't even make... I don't
52:10
care about anything. I
52:12
just want other people to know what the hell happened
52:14
out there. And why? Alright,
52:17
you know I know who. I know what.
52:19
I know when. I know
52:21
where. And
52:23
then when I talked to you earlier, say you said you
52:26
got a car jacket. Both
52:28
worlds. Husband. And you?
52:32
That one is husband and girlfriend. This
52:38
is not just some psycho...
52:40
I just wanted to go with home. I
52:44
am documented, psychiatrically
52:47
disarmed. I'm documented,
52:49
talking about this is a
52:51
fact. So
52:55
my point is... We're well aware of that. My point is this though.
52:58
This family didn't deserve this. This
53:02
could have been prevented had it not been from
53:04
the graduate public corrections. Doing what they do what
53:06
they sponsor had did. And they never
53:08
gave me an opportunity. They never gave
53:11
me an opportunity for true because I wouldn't take the medicine. Waiting

55:17
He not only confessed eventually to
55:19
the police for the murders, but
55:22
he also wrote to an
55:24
Omaha newspaper in November taking
55:26
responsibility for the killings. While
55:29
in jail, Nico files a lawsuit for
55:31
$27.5 million against the state of Nebraska,
55:34
claiming that
55:38
all the carnage could have been prevented
55:40
if they never let him out. He
55:46
once again said he was not fit
55:48
to stand trial due to his mental
55:50
illness, and a judge orders an
55:53
assessment for him. During
55:55
one of many assessments, there would
55:57
be one person who believed that
55:59
Nico was at absolutely mentally ill
56:01
and not fit to stand trial
56:04
and that was Dry Olivetti. He
56:07
was diagnosed with schizophrenia,
56:09
bipolar and obsessive compulsive
56:11
disorder. This was
56:13
however all ignored and the prosecution
56:15
claimed that Nico was making all
56:18
of this up. Nebraska
56:20
was one of the few states
56:22
that still had the death penalty
56:24
and to this day Dry Olivetti,
56:26
who is in his 80s now,
56:28
holds to his belief that Nico
56:30
should be in a mental institution
56:32
for life. The
56:35
claim was that all he had
56:37
was an anti-social personality disorder, which
56:40
is probably true. The
56:42
difference is mental illness is a
56:45
disease while a personality disorder is
56:47
not. His troubled
56:49
childhood littered with alcohol
56:51
and drug abuse by pretty much
56:53
everyone in his clan also
56:56
played no role in the verdict. Nico,
57:02
when asked why he shot
57:04
Andrea so many times, said
57:07
that he did her a favor. His
57:10
first shot only took one half of her
57:12
head off, so he decided to take the
57:15
other half off with a shotgun blast as
57:17
well. Only he would
57:19
be able to make sense of that logic. Nico
57:26
was deemed fit to stand trial
57:28
and as the trial begins, he
57:30
fires his entire defense team and
57:32
decides to represent himself. Throughout
57:35
the trial, he never denies committing the
57:37
murders, but he does claim he is
57:40
not responsible for them. He
57:42
said that it was the god Apophis
57:44
that made him kill as a sacrifice
57:47
and out of the blue during the trial, Nico
57:50
started to talk in a strange language.
57:53
The closest I can explain it is
57:55
when people in charismatic churches claim to
57:57
speak in tongues. On
58:02
the 16th of April 2014, Nico
58:04
was found guilty of all four
58:07
murders. The question
58:09
remained whether he was competent
58:11
enough to be sentenced to
58:13
death. His sentencing
58:15
kept on being delayed and
58:17
his name became a regular feature in
58:19
local papers as the
58:22
debate on whether he is mentally
58:24
ill continued. As
58:28
he awaited his sentence, Nico decided
58:30
to carve the numbers 666 into his forehead.
58:35
Unfortunately for him, he did
58:37
it in a mirror and the numbers
58:39
came out backwards. This
58:42
is also when he sliced his
58:44
tongue to make it look like
58:46
that of a serpent, which required
58:48
nine stitches. However,
58:51
he got hold of a razor during this time
58:53
and tried to carve his penis into the form
58:55
of a snake. He also
58:57
got hold of a guard's keys and
58:59
managed to swallow all seven of them.
59:03
This mutilation required 27 stitches.
59:07
He continued to mutilate his face and
59:10
in May of 2017, he was finally sentenced to 450 years
59:15
behind bars for the murders and
59:18
other crimes he committed as well
59:20
as four death penalties. The
59:25
rest of the family was also charged for
59:28
their pardon the crimes. Nico's
59:30
mom got 10 years in prison
59:32
for aiding and abetting her son.
59:36
Erica was given a life term for the
59:38
murder of Curtis Bradford and taking part in
59:40
some of the robberies. Christine
59:43
was given a 20 year sentence for
59:45
her part in the robberies. Her
59:48
sentence was substitutionally lighter because
59:50
she informed on her family
59:52
members. Erica
59:54
and Christine actually at one point ended
59:56
up in the same cell and Erica
59:58
nearly killed her cousin. cousin for snitching
1:00:01
on them. Uncle
1:00:04
Warren was sentenced to four years
1:00:06
in prison for his part in
1:00:08
the crimes and the murder of
1:00:10
Andrea Krueger. His
1:00:12
notorious uncle had just gotten out of
1:00:14
prison for kidnapping an assault and was
1:00:16
on his way back to the big
1:00:18
house. He even still
1:00:21
had burns from setting her car on
1:00:23
fire earlier that week. Dry
1:00:28
Olivetti evaluated all the family members
1:00:31
involved in these crimes. Erika

was deemed so dangerous that
1:00:36
he believed that she would rip the
1:00:38
face off any prisoner they put her in
1:00:40
a cell with. Even
1:00:42
the guards were afraid of her due to
1:00:45
her unpredictable behavior. Dry Olivetti
1:00:47
believed that she would kill or
1:00:49
assault anyone at the drop of a hat
1:00:51
for no reason at all. In
1:00:57
April 2020, the appeals court
1:00:59
refused to hear Nico's appeal
1:01:02
and he is currently still in solitary
1:01:04
confinement awaiting the death penalty. And
1:01:11
now for another gruesome twosome. Part
1:01:15
3. Antonio
1:01:17
Barbeau and Nathan Pape.
1:01:22
In this town of
1:01:24
8,000 mortals there is
1:01:26
on average two or
1:01:28
less homicides per year as of
1:01:37
2012. When
1:01:39
murder did come to town, the
1:01:41
nature of it shocked the locals
1:01:43
due to its cold-blooded savagery. June
1:01:48
17, 2013. Fourteen-year-old
1:01:52
Nathan Pape returned home at the
1:01:54
end of the school day and went
1:01:56
straight to his room. Before
1:01:59
long, his friend and Antonio
1:02:01
Barbeau, also 14 years old,
1:02:04
joined him there. After
1:02:06
conferring for about 20 minutes, Nathan
1:02:09
asked his mother if she would give the
1:02:11
boys a lift. Their
1:02:14
plan was to pay a visit to
1:02:16
Antonio's great-grandmother. The
1:02:19
matriarch in question was 78-year-old
1:02:21
Barbara Olson, who lived in
1:02:23
a district of Sheboygan Falls
1:02:25
called West Wind Bluffs.
1:02:29
Mrs. Pape dropped the boys off at that
1:02:32
address. If
1:02:36
only Mrs. Pape had been aware
1:02:38
that Antonio had a hatchet tucked
1:02:40
in behind the waistband of his
1:02:42
jeans. Outdone
1:02:44
but not unarmed, Nathan
1:02:47
concealed a hammer within his
1:02:49
clothes. Their objective
1:02:52
was to rob and kill Mrs. Olson.
1:02:56
They plotted out the crime in Nathan's
1:02:58
bedroom. They would enter Mrs.
1:03:00
Olson's home via the garage, sneak
1:03:03
up on her, and club her on the
1:03:05
head from behind. She wouldn't
1:03:07
even know what hit her or if she had been
1:03:10
hit at all. They simply intended
1:03:12
to turn out her lights with a single
1:03:14
blow. It
1:03:18
didn't go as planned. Barbara
1:03:21
heard noises in her garage and
1:03:23
went down to have a look. She
1:03:25
was overjoyed to see it was Antonio.
1:03:28
She was always happy to see her grandson. She
1:03:31
was more than pleased to welcome his friend.
1:03:38
Barbara stepped into the kitchen when
1:03:41
the boys attacked her. She
1:03:43
fell to the floor after Antonio struck her
1:03:45
with the blunt end of his hatchet. She
1:03:48
held up her arms, imploring him
1:03:50
to show her mercy. Nathan
1:03:53
joined him, bashing Barbara with his
1:03:56
hammer. At
1:03:58
one point, Antonio returned. removed
1:04:00
his sweatshirt because it compromised
1:04:02
his agility. He
1:04:05
couldn't beat his grandmother as effectively
1:04:07
with the sweatshirt restricting his movements,
1:04:09
you see. By
1:04:12
now, Barbara suffered severe strikes to
1:04:14
the head and face. Her
1:04:16
arms and hands were deeply wounded. Eventually,
1:04:19
she became overwhelmed by the relentless
1:04:22
brutality of the attack. And
1:04:24
she succumbed to her injuries as
1:04:27
she lay in a pool of blood
1:04:29
spreading out across the kitchen floor from
1:04:31
beneath her. Nathan
1:04:36
and Antonio dragged Barbara's corpse
1:04:39
into the garage. Their
1:04:41
plan was to place her remains in the trunk
1:04:43
of her car. The
1:04:45
dead weight must have been too heavy for them
1:04:47
to lift for they left her
1:04:49
on the cold concrete floor of the garage.
1:04:53
From there, they took to the
1:04:55
house in search of money and other valuables.
1:05:01
The total combined proceeds from this crime
1:05:03
were $155 in cash and a
1:05:05
few articles of jewelry. The
1:05:13
boys drove the car around town, eventually
1:05:16
leaving it behind a bowling alley. The
1:05:19
key was left in the ignition and the
1:05:22
jewelry was left on the front seats. They
1:05:28
used the cash to go out for pizza and buy some pot. Two
1:05:34
days later, Barbara's daughter,
1:05:36
Judy Offit, discovered her body. At
1:05:38
first, it occurred to her that
1:05:40
her mother might have had a fall, but
1:05:43
the blood trails and streaks left on the
1:05:45
floor indicated that she had been
1:05:47
dragged to where she was found. Judy
1:05:50
called the police. Investigators soon
1:05:52
found out that
1:05:57
Barbara and Ada throw off her Antonio
1:06:00
paid a visit to Barbara's home
1:06:02
the afternoon she was killed. They
1:06:05
do tend to look at family first. Antonio
1:06:09
was interviewed as a witness and
1:06:11
his answers to the questions gave
1:06:14
rise to so much suspicion they
1:06:17
could smell it in the air like
1:06:19
a slaughterhouse dumpster during a heat wave.
1:06:23
The detectives sought and obtained a
1:06:25
warrant for his bedroom and his
1:06:27
locker at school. They
1:06:32
hit paydart. How
1:06:35
many high school students keep
1:06:37
blood splattered clothes and shoes
1:06:39
in their locker? I
1:06:42
didn't. I'm not so
1:06:44
sure about you. Bloody clothes
1:06:46
and his great grandmother's gold
1:06:48
watch were discovered under his
1:06:51
bed. Police found
1:06:53
Barbara's purse in a storm drain
1:06:55
close to her home. Within
1:07:00
12 hours of the discovery of
1:07:02
Barbara Olson's body, Antonio
1:07:04
Barbo and Nathan Pape
1:07:07
were placed under arrest. The
1:07:10
district attorney soon announced they would
1:07:13
be tried as adults. January
1:07:17
2013, Antonio
1:07:20
submitted a plea of not guilty by
1:07:23
mental disease or defect.
1:07:26
He buttressed this by reporting that he
1:07:28
was hit by a car at the
1:07:30
age of 10 and he acquired a
1:07:32
brain injury as a consequence. His family
1:07:35
asserted that he was mentally impaired
1:07:37
since the accident. Two
1:07:42
weeks later, Anthony Pape entered a
1:07:44
not guilty plea. He
1:07:46
insisted that he didn't actually participate
1:07:48
in the murder and that he
1:07:50
only accompanied Antonio because he didn't
1:07:52
want to disappoint him. His
1:07:55
parents pointed out that he had the
1:07:57
mental capacity of a 10-year-old and
1:07:59
was easily influenced by others.
1:08:05
An assembly of experts ruled
1:08:07
that Antonio was not mentally
1:08:09
impaired and was responsible for
1:08:11
his actions. The
1:08:13
only option left was for his lawyers
1:08:15
to strike a plea deal whereby he
1:08:18
would serve 35 years and testify
1:08:21
against Nathan. The
1:08:23
deal was accepted. His family
1:08:25
insisted Barbara would have wanted a
1:08:27
more lenient sentence for Antonio. The
1:08:31
judge wasn't swayed. At
1:08:36
the trial of Nathan Pape, results
1:08:38
from the autopsy were introduced. The
1:08:41
coroner found that Barbara Olsen
1:08:43
was struck with both blunt
1:08:45
and sharp objects. Nathan
1:08:47
admitted to striking Olsen but emphasized
1:08:50
that he was forced by Antonio
1:08:52
to do so. The
1:08:55
jury did not sympathize, especially after
1:08:58
seeing the autopsy photos. Even
1:09:00
hard-boiled detectives had to turn away.
1:09:03
They were so disturbed by them.
1:09:06
The autopsy revealed that Barbara knew what
1:09:08
was happening to her while she was
1:09:10
being assaulted and that
1:09:13
she experienced extreme distress throughout
1:09:15
the act. Nathan
1:09:20
Pape was found guilty. He was
1:09:22
sentenced to a life term of
1:09:24
31 years. Judge
1:09:27
Timothy Van Akerin said,
1:09:30
This is the worst crime that I have encountered
1:09:32
in my 24 years on the bench. I've
1:09:36
not seen anything of this nature, not
1:09:39
even close. This
1:09:42
episode was written by Morgan Rector and
1:09:44
Miss Demeanour. Thank
1:09:48
you for listening to Human Monsters. Bye for
1:09:50
now.
