In this episode we examine why some in the Democratic party have asserted that there is a dichotomy between economic justice and social justice, such that emphasis on one precludes emphasis on the other. We examine the degree to which class is or should be a central part of Democratic Party messaging. There is a debate within the party over whether to move to the left or the center after 2016. During the 2016 campaign, this left versus center conflict often played out as a proxy battle between factions of the party. One faction wanted a stronger economic justice message explicitly prioritizing the working class (the left). Centrists in turn defended by pointing out that a message for the working class was, in practice, one tailored to white working class voters, who have historically opposed civil rights for the identity groups of the Democratic coalition.
