A lot of people give a lot of weight on “the truth.” People seek it and die for it. But how many people ever gave a careful thought about the truth? Or probed into the essence of truth. What is the truth? In this episode, we’re going to probe deeper into the nature of truth because this is the truth about the truth.
SHOW NOTES: WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
Truth can be classified into 2 types. The absolute truth and the relative truth.Absolute Truth - is an inflexible reality: fixed, invariable and unalterable fact. E.g. “there is no square circles,” that is fixed, invariable and unalterable.Relative Truth - reality is variable and subjective. Validity and meaning is derived from subjective values according to a specific context i.e. differences in perception and considerations.
Characteristics of The Truth
- Absolute – the truth doesn’t depend upon anything else. Something that is true will be true every time, everywhere and for anyone or anything.
- Correspondence – the truth corresponds/reflects reality.
- Coherence – the truth must have internal and external consistency or cohesion. Meaning it can’t contradict itself. E.g. Square-circle. There is no such thing as a square circle because it’s self-contradictory.
- Singular – related to coherence, the truth does not come in bits and pieces of disconnected or unrelated ideas.
- Universal – the truth equally applies to everything and everyone all the time.
- Objective – the truth is not subjective. It is not discovered by personal feelings nor determined by private intuitions. Instead, truth is propositional. It is conveyed in narrowly defined words that have rational definitions and is stated in precise terms that communicate real meaning.
- Truth is black and white. It is definite, definitive, and conclusive.
- Truth is not abstract, vague, or nebulous. It is accurately stated by the fixed meaning of words and can be observed, discussed, studied, analyzed, believed, proclaimed, and defended.
