I found this podcast right when I needed it, when I was trudging through my own strange woods. What a brave story with such relatable characters... I really fell into it and it lives entirely free in my heart.Didn't think I'd be so much into a musical podcast but it's 2021 and here we are!
Crime, musical theatre, and podcasts - three of my favorite things in one show. I have nothing but good things to say, and I am eagerly awaiting the next episode. Check this show out, for real!!
This podcast is lovely! The songs are great and the characters feel incredibly real, especially Kathy! Can't wait for the soundtrack!!
A story about grief and coping with it, with underlying themes of community (the character of the town is important to the plot) and relationships between children and adults. The framing structure of true crime/documentary combined with musical is a strange choice (one format tries really hard to convince the listener it's real while the other requires suspension of disbelief), but I got used to it the longer I listened and it allowed the narrator to take a more active role in the plot. The cast includes Patrick Page (Hadestown) - though he is unfortunately given one of the more forgettable songs IMO - and Donna Lynne Champlin (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). The first episode is the weakest, song-wise, and there's some weak lyricism here and there, but the singing/mixing is good and I did enjoy and add a few of the songs to my Musicals playlist; I liked how musical motifs were revisited.
I really love the music in this!
The songs were a little clunky and the plot isn't super fresh but the performers we're fantastic and overall I really enjoyed it.
A coming of age drama about overcoming loss and grief. Great soundtrack and performances for a lovingly crafted musical.
Holy moly, what an experience! I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but this really worked for me.
that podcast was a ride, and a beautiful experience.the music is amazing (catch me humming "shatter" or "come and find me" any time), and so is the story. the characters are surprisingly complex and well-developed for such a short work. it deals with themes of grief and loss and finding your place in a community with skill and softness. every episode was gripping, and (although I am definitely not one for binge-listening) I found myself unable to stop after each episode.all in all, I definitely recommend. perfect story for a calm, bittersweet evening.
It's been a year since I listened to In Strange Woods and I still play the soundtrack on Spotify often. I was skeptical of a fiction podcast, and was still unsure of the show after listening to episode 1, but am unspeakably glad that I stuck around and kept listening. In Strange Woods is a hidden gem with beautiful latent themes.
I loved this show! I was so sad when it was over! The storytelling was really good.
I love mystery, I love fiction podcasts, I love musical theatre. And this has all three!
In Strange Woods is a fascinating experimental marvel. A documentary-style musical dealing with grief and loneliness. It perhaps didn't hit me as hard as I hoped because I could not have cared less about the central tension of the plot: is Howl a dangerous person? There's only one way the plot could have really gone to not undercut its own message, so I felt very little tension the creators wanted to gin up. Nor did I get much out of the soap opera melodrama surrounding the character. Where In Strange Woods excelled and surprised me is how integral the character of the whole town is to the plot. There's such a warmth to the way the town fusses over these teenagers. The trials and travails of parenting >>>> broody tortured man. In the end, this is why In Strange Woods hits far more than it misses.
The music is great. The buildup leads to a totally different direction than expected.
Another knock-out from Atypical Artists. Thoughtful, heart-breaking story with great characters and an amazing score.
