Liezl celebrates 3 months of podcasting and in this episode decides to go solo, telling you all a bit more about herself, her journey and what life has been like since she went abroad for the first time 20 years ago.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It’s been 20 years that Liezl has lived outside South Africa and she didn’t even plan to live abroad!
  • The first place Liezl experienced outside her home country was Cairo, it was like a dream come true seeing the Pyramids of Giza and experience the stark differences from where she grew up was a great priviledge.
  • Travelling across countries has given Liezl incredible knowledge and experience that she wouldn’t have had otherwise.
  • Liezl always intended on going back home but she kept extending her stay to experience more when opportunities arose and before she knew it, she had the right to remain and could apply for a British passport.
  • Covid was a difficult time for Liezl and although it was a challenge she is learning to be grateful for her experiences, she was able to stay with her mum and create precious memories before she passed away recently.
  • Being in a different country can be inspirational and eye-opening. Liezl has always felt so alive and excited when she has travelled to a new place, awakening creativity in herself.
  • When in a new place, you have to gain understanding and respect the differences from what you might perceive as 'normal'.

BEST MOMENTS

'I knew I had to experience that’

‘I saved every penny I could because my dream was to see a lot of Europe’

‘I wanted to see more, I wanted to stay longer and before I knew it, I could apply for leave to remain’

‘It wasn’t always easy but we can look back and be grateful for things we’ve learned and the times we have shared’
