Four Events In 1781
Greetings, this episode relates three events that affected Indiana History or occurred in the future state. Virginia, which at the time owned the area that included the state, awarded George Rogers Clark a huge tract of land in payment of for his services in current Clark County. The same day Virginia ceded what would later become the Northwestern Territory to the United States. This led to the ratification of the Articles of Confederation, the first national government for the United States. In August 1781 Colonel Archibald Lochry, along with many of his men, were massacred along Laughery Creek in southeastern Indiana. In October, General George Washington defeated General Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia, the last major conflict in the Revolutionary War.
