In this edition of Indystructible we meet Palestinian-born democratic socialist Khader El-Yateem. A Lutheran minister by trade, El-Yateem, wants to be the first Arab American elected to City Council. There’s just one problem: the entirety of the Democratic establishment stands in his way. I visited him in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn ahead of the Democratic Primaries on Sept. 12. We talked about his efforts to continue Bernie Sander’s political revolution in the Council’s 43rd district, an area Sanders’ carried in the primary. We also discussed Angela Merkel, the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement against the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the challenges El-Yateem is facing running as an Arab American for a seat traditionally held by members of Bay Ridge’s white catholic majority.
