1:02

From Wondry and Prime Video, this

1:04

is the official The Rings of Power podcast.

1:07

I'm Felicia Day. I'm an actor, writer,

1:09

author, but most of all, I am

1:12

a fan of all things fantasy, especially

1:15

of Tolkien. And

1:17

now we have eight full episodes of the Rings

1:19

of Power available to watch on prime

1:21

video right now, creating a new

1:23

generation of fans. Each episode

1:25

of TV show will be paired with an episode of

1:27

this podcast, and I'll be your faithful

1:29

companion. I'll be joined by members of

1:32

the cast and crew who will share all kinds

1:34

of behind the scenes details that you cannot

1:36

hear anywhere else. Today,

1:38

we're talking all about episode one of the

1:40

Lord of the Rings, the Rings of Power, which is

1:42

called shadow of the past. Joining

1:45

me will be my new girl crush, Morfit

1:47

Clark, the actress who plays Calabrio,

1:49

and a little after that, we'll be hearing from

1:51

the show's creators. Katie Payne, and

1:53

Patrick McKay. You

1:56

may know Tolkien's books to lure the rings or

1:58

the hobbit, and we're still in that world.

1:59

but that world was

2:02

the third age. In the rings of

2:04

power, we are thousands of years before

2:06

Frodo and Sam tried to simply walk into

2:08

Mordor. We are in the second

2:10

age. We meet so many

2:12

more characters besides Galadriel in

2:14

this first episode. We get a brutal

2:16

cliffnote summary of Morgoth's reign

2:18

and his defeat. We meet the star

2:20

crossed lovers of Rondir and Bronwyn

2:22

in the southlands. We learn about Nora

2:25

Brandy Foot and her secretive harfits.

2:27

And finally, we see a comet

2:29

sear across the sky with a

2:31

naked guy inside. Evil

2:34

does not sleep around.

2:38

It waits. Galadriel

2:39

is a character many of us are familiar

2:42

with, but in episode one, we need a younger,

2:44

bolder, and far more unpredictable elf

2:47

than we've ever seen before. She

2:49

is hungry for vengeance for her brother

2:51

Finrod and is searching for the

2:53

remaining forces of evil in the world.

2:55

including Sauron. Gladiator

2:58

is played by the actress, Morfit Clark,

3:00

and we are so excited to have Morfit

3:02

here with us today. Galadriel

3:06

as a warrior is kind of

3:08

something that people have this idea of her

3:10

as very like goddess like, but In the

3:12

in the history, she is a person who goes

3:14

after what she wants in a really aggressive way.

3:16

She really is in the thick of it. Can you talk a little

3:18

bit about that? Yeah. The

3:21

elves are arrogant and

3:23

vain. And that's why the the

3:25

rings corrupted them in a particular way

3:28

where they took, like, should they take

3:30

hold of the one ring. They're not beyond

3:32

being corrupted. And yes,

3:35

she has a very strong idea that

3:38

she

3:38

belongs

3:39

in certain areas

3:41

of power -- Mhmm. -- and that she's right,

3:44

which also lots the ups around her too.

3:46

I think Gladstone has a really strong idea

3:49

of justice, what is right and

3:51

wrong, and that she should

3:53

be a sort of justice

3:55

bring her in as yet. Yeah. But but now

3:57

that you're saying this, you were really playing her as

3:59

a

3:59

flawed character.

4:01

You know, there there is a sort of, like,

4:03

ethereal version of of

4:05

her that it's so I'm so perfect.

4:08

But seeing her be a flawed person who

4:10

is a little bit arrogant -- Mhmm. -- who is very driven,

4:12

but and repentant. It's so refreshing

4:14

in a way, especially as a female character to

4:16

have those flaws. Yes. And

4:18

I feel that Tolkien is

4:20

hugely about community me. Mhmm.

4:23

And she is rejected her

4:25

ticket to Valinor. Mhmm. But also

4:28

she's she's an elf alone even when

4:30

she's with the elves. she's rejecting

4:32

part of her essence. Yeah. And it's almost

4:34

sad. You almost -- Yes. -- sorry for her. And I'm in

4:36

a really impactful way. So

4:38

I I wanna talk a little bit about

4:40

your relationship with Elrond because

4:42

it is I I think, you know, now that

4:44

you're really highlighting this sort of aloneness

4:46

and sort of isolation of your character. He's

4:48

the only character you really do connect

4:51

with. Yeah. And so can you talk a little bit what

4:53

what he means to you? Yeah.

4:55

I think that Elrond

4:57

and Gladrular are going through a

4:59

recalibration of their relationship

5:02

because he is he's

5:04

young. He actually is young for an elf

5:06

and he's coming into his own and

5:08

becoming kind

5:10

of worthy

5:11

not adversary because they

5:14

get on. But but he was a half

5:16

elf and he decided Yeah. I think he's a half elf and he

5:18

decided to be an elf, which is kind of an unusual. So

5:20

he might have, like, a little inferiority complaint

5:22

or not inferiority, but just being a little

5:24

bit more of an outsider. Right? Yes. Definitely.

5:26

And I think that him

5:28

being an outsider and having a different perspective

5:31

is something that is

5:33

part of why gradual is fascinated.

5:36

by him. Mhmm. And I think Elrond's

5:38

whole story is surprising, and then the way

5:40

he views stuff is as well. Yeah. That is

5:42

beautiful. Well, obviously, you guys have

5:44

amazing chemistry, and that's seen in the cruise.

5:46

It's just so touching. This

5:48

is the gift of

5:51

your

5:51

king. The gift

5:53

I have decided to refuse.

5:55

the lottery

5:56

My brother gave his life hunting

5:59

Sauron.

5:59

His task is now mine.

6:02

Also, in a couple thousand years, he's gonna marry your

6:04

daughters. In that sense, yeah. nicely get

6:06

along. This show has a lot of

6:08

choices between dark and light, and we wanted to

6:10

ask all the actors about a big decision

6:12

in the episode and whether they

6:14

as the actor would do the same thing as your

6:16

character. Okay? Mhmm. So we call

6:18

this one the big choice. At

6:20

the end of the episode, Galadriel denies

6:23

a peace full eternity in her homeland of Valinor and

6:25

instead decides to jump in the

6:27

sea. This is a huge decision obviously.

6:29

And the end of Gladrials journey

6:31

as we see her decide to go to Valinor at

6:33

the end of the Lord of the Rings. So now, this is a

6:35

big moment. You're deciding not to. I'm

6:37

glad you jumped off I was worried about you eating by getting

6:40

eaten by sharks, but that's what I said too.

6:42

If you were in Gladriel's position

6:45

being set off to retirement, would you go or

6:47

would you go back to fight? I

6:50

think I would jump off because I don't like

6:52

being told what to do and she doesn't

6:54

need that. That's the best answer.

6:56

That's the best answer. And I was oh, I was so

6:58

rooting for you. I was like, get off.

7:00

Get off. It was a great moment. And

7:02

you Yeah. You just really dazzle

7:04

and you inspire women

7:06

around the world who feel like they have an inner elf.

7:08

So thank you for that. That's lovely to hear.
