Hey listeners, Tracy Patton here. Today

0:02

we're sharing something special with you. It's

0:04

a preview of My Life of Crime, an

0:07

original true crime podcast from CBS

0:09

News, hosted by 48 Hours correspondent

0:12

Erin Moriarty. Erin takes you inside

0:14

true crime investigations like no one

0:16

else, taking on killers and those accused

0:19

of crimes. In the new season of My

0:21

Life of Crime, she delves into the labyrinth

0:23

of crime within families and the secrets

0:26

that kept them together or tore them apart.

0:29

I'm about to play you a clip from My Life of

0:31

Crime. While you're listening, follow 48 Hours

0:39

All right, here's the clip. Erin

0:41

examines the case of two identical

0:43

twin brothers, David and Daniel

0:45

DeWilde, who thought they could get away

0:47

with murder and almost

0:49

did.

0:58

There's

0:58

no such thing as a perfect

1:01

family, no matter what you see on

1:03

social media or in that annual

1:05

holiday card you receive in the mail. Even

1:08

the closest families have problems.

1:11

We fight, make up, then fight

1:13

and make up. There's always the

1:15

hope of reconciliation, a happy

1:18

ending, because we're family. So

1:20

what could cause a person to destroy

1:23

the people he seemingly loves

1:25

the most? I'm Erin

1:27

Moriarty,

1:28

and this is season four

1:30

of My Life of Crime.

1:36

I've spent the last three decades

1:38

studying crimes and the people who commit

1:40

them and nothing is more personal

1:43

than when one family member kills another.

1:46

You're about to hear one of the more interesting

1:49

cases I've come across. Twisted

1:51

twins.

1:53

Who killed Heather DeWilde? It's

1:56

the case of two Colorado brothers,

1:59

two identical twins. twin brothers

2:02

David and Daniel DeWilde who

2:04

thought they could get away with murder and

2:06

you know what they almost did.

2:09

Everyone is fascinated

2:11

by twins but I have a personal

2:13

interest. You might not know this

2:15

about me but I'm a fraternal

2:18

twin. Fraternal twins

2:20

are two separate eggs that happen to form

2:22

at the same time so their DNA

2:25

profiles are no more alike than other

2:27

siblings but identical

2:30

twins come from one egg and

2:32

share the same DNA. Still

2:36

as you're about to hear when it comes

2:38

to something as serious as murder

2:41

even the bond of identical twins

2:43

will be put to the test.

2:48

Daniel and David DeWilde were identical

2:50

twin brothers

2:51

who grew up did basically

2:54

everything together. They

2:56

worked at the same location

2:58

and they basically ate the same food.

3:01

They did everything together. Daniel

3:03

and David were as close

3:06

as two brothers could be born

3:08

just a minute and a half apart. They

3:10

were almost one person so when

3:13

Daniel's marriage to his wife Heather fell

3:15

apart David felt his pain

3:18

and when Heather Daniel's wife moved out

3:20

of the house with their two small kids

3:23

David moved in. The house

3:25

was in the small town of Edgewater,

3:27

Colorado just 10 minutes

3:29

from the city of Denver. Heather

3:32

would still occasionally come by with the

3:34

kids even though her own dad

3:36

Dave Springer who happened to be

3:38

a retired Denver cop worried

3:41

every time she did. I told

3:44

her not to go there and I didn't think she would

3:46

but she did. The date was

3:49

July 24th, 2003. Heather 30 years old dropped by the

3:51

house around noon to sign

3:55

a check and pick up insurance cards

3:58

for their children. His

4:00

mother, Carol Springer, estimates her visit

4:02

to Daniel's house should have taken

4:04

about two hours. But by 3

4:07

p.m., Heather still hadn't

4:09

returned. Carol called Daniel

4:12

and asked him where Heather had gone.

4:15

He told me that she went shopping. I says, well, that's

4:18

not true. That's what

4:20

I told him. He says, no, that's

4:22

not true. We knew immediately

4:25

that was a lie. Why?

4:28

Because she, before she left the house, she

4:30

didn't take any money with her or a credit

4:32

card. And he

4:34

said she went shopping? Right. How

4:36

much sense does that make to you? Well, it didn't make

4:38

any sense.

4:40

Carol, with a sinking feeling,

4:43

went to Daniel's house to pick up her

4:45

grandchildren.

4:46

And what was going through your mind at

4:48

that point? Let me get the kids and be

4:50

gone. I wanted to get out of there.

4:53

The children, just 3 and 5

4:56

years old, couldn't say where their mother

4:58

had gone. Heather's dad, Dave

5:00

Springer, didn't want to waste time

5:03

and called the local police to do a preliminary

5:06

search of Daniel's house.

5:09

But

5:11

they did their search, didn't find

5:13

anything.

5:15

And by this time, it's 9.30 at night.

5:19

So now I know we've got a

5:21

problem. And

5:24

I'm thinking to myself, they killed her at

5:26

this point. When you say they killed

5:28

her? Well, whoever was

5:30

there, he

5:32

and if

5:36

anyone else was there, they'd have been involved. I

5:38

didn't know who was in the house.

5:40

Heather had simply vanished

5:42

along with her car. Heather's

5:45

dad believed that Daniel was behind

5:47

her disappearance. Wouldn't the children

5:49

have seen something? And

5:52

where was Heather's car? Dave

5:54

Springer didn't know for sure that anyone

5:56

else was in the house, but he did

5:59

know how close Daniel was to

6:01

his twin brother David. And

6:04

the timing was very suspicious.

6:07

Heather's supports would have become final in

6:09

just two days. At

6:11

the time she was living with her parents

6:14

and had been given custody of their two

6:16

children, Hannah and Jacob. On

6:19

top of that, Daniel had to pay

6:21

her child support.

6:23

He was very angry over that because

6:25

he thought he was going to lose his home. He couldn't

6:27

pay all his bills. Daniel's

6:29

twin David and his girlfriend

6:32

Roseanne had moved into Daniel's house

6:34

to help him with the mortgage and house payments.

6:38

But it wasn't enough. Meanwhile,

6:40

Daniel kept hoping to win Heather back.

6:42

Two days before Heather's

6:45

disappearance, Daniel had shown

6:47

up at her parents' house to try one

6:49

last time. And according to

6:51

Heather's dad,

6:53

it didn't go well. He

6:55

brought a card and flowers and tried to get

6:57

her to reconsider the divorce.

7:00

And when

7:01

she didn't, he left

7:03

there in a state of anger and burned

7:06

his rubber tires leaving the

7:09

parking place out in front of the house and

7:13

screamed away down the street. So, you

7:16

know, he was definitely

7:19

angry again.

7:20

So did something happen to Heather during

7:22

her visit to Daniel's house? Because

7:25

his story that Heather went shopping

7:28

didn't make any sense to Carol and Dave

7:30

Springer. The next day,

7:32

July 25, 2003, a couple of Denver cops went

7:37

to the house. When Daniel opened

7:39

the door, Detective Mark Reiter

7:42

asked Daniel if he could ask him some questions

7:45

about his still missing wife.
