Welcome to Our Sunday Talks,

0:14

an exclusive series for the

0:16

patrons of the Inspirational Living

0:18

Podcast. Today's talk

0:20

was edited and adapted from

0:22

New Thought Common Sense and

0:25

What Life Means to Me

0:27

by Yellow Wheeler Wilcox. Published

0:30

in 1908. A

0:36

most beautiful calendar opens with the

0:38

lines, I'll not

0:40

easily offend nor be

0:43

easily offended. What's amiss

0:45

I'll try to mend and

0:47

endure what can't be mended. One

0:50

could hardly start the day with

0:53

a better resolution than what is

0:55

contained in those lines. To

0:58

not easily offend is

1:00

to be continually considerate. We

1:03

should all strive to think before

1:05

speaking, to restrain the

1:08

careless word and the

1:10

useless criticism, to forego

1:12

the pleasure of a life when

1:15

it would fall as ridicule on

1:17

sensitive ears, and to

1:19

avoid the little sins of omission which

1:22

mar friendship. The unanswered

1:24

letter, the unreturned call,

1:28

the unspoken word of approval

1:30

or congratulation for achievements,

1:33

and the unoffered word of sympathy

1:35

for trouble or loss. Then

1:38

to even more admirable still, it

1:41

seems to me, is the resolve

1:44

nor be easily offended. One

1:47

of the most expensive luxuries of life,

1:50

and the least profitable as an

1:52

investment for happiness, is

1:54

the friend who is easily offended, and

1:57

whom you are forever apologizing. the

2:00

mistakes you did not mean to make,

2:03

and the slights you did not know you

2:05

had given until they were

2:07

forced upon your unwilling attention. Easily

2:11

offended nature is usually

2:13

the selfish and self-centered nature,

2:16

yet it may be found too with

2:18

those who have been neglected in early

2:20

youth and who have formed

2:23

the habit of self-depreciation. I

2:26

know a successful and broad-minded

2:28

businessman who is hypersensitive

2:30

regarding the small things of

2:32

life, and who imagine

2:34

he is being neglected and slighted if

2:37

a friend passes him absorbed in

2:39

thought with only a passing

2:42

greeting. But this man

2:44

had been an orphan, living

2:46

a lonely childhood among people who

2:48

fell in clothed him, but

2:50

who oftentimes made him realize

2:53

that he was not an important

2:55

factor in their lives. So

2:57

he has shaped his mind of gloomy

3:00

thoughts of neglect, and

3:02

after he became important to the lives

3:04

of many people and

3:06

a man of large affairs and wide interests,

3:09

still his brain continued to work in

3:11

the old groove, and he

3:13

was easily offended. More

3:16

frequently, however, this fault

3:18

is associated with the selfish and

3:21

the vain, who find

3:23

no happiness unless given the center

3:25

of life's stage, with

3:27

the full force of the spotlight

3:29

thrown upon them. If

3:31

but one individual in the audience looks

3:34

at any other of God's company for

3:36

a brief moment, they are

3:38

offended and want to resign from

3:40

the role and compel the

3:42

curtain to come down. Love

3:45

indeed is life for such people, and

3:48

being with such people. Therefore

3:51

the motto which bids us to

3:53

be not easily offended should

3:55

be written in neon letters and hung

3:57

where all may read. You

4:00

can help sweeten the world for yourself

4:03

and for others if you

4:05

live true to this motto. Put

4:08

it into practice first of all, where

4:10

every great virtue and accomplishment

4:12

should be practiced in

4:15

the home. As a

4:17

spouse, child sibling or parent, be

4:20

not easily offended. The

4:22

touchy person can destroy an

4:24

Eden almost as easily

4:26

as can the serpent. There

4:29

is usually a lamentable lack of a

4:31

sense of humor in a

4:33

person who is easily offended. They

4:36

take every small action, every

4:38

look and every failure to speak

4:41

as a serious intent on the

4:43

part of somebody to wound their

4:45

feelings. Oh, how

4:47

they suffer. Yet how

4:49

they make others suffer by

4:52

their silly self-consciousness and

4:54

eternal sensitiveness. They

4:56

will tell you that because they give

4:59

so much and are so unselfish, they

5:02

suffer more keenly from perceived

5:04

slights. But this is not

5:06

true of love. The

5:09

really loving nature is so

5:11

occupied with giving that it does

5:13

not find time to be offended

5:15

over small neglects. The

5:18

loving nature is not touchy. It

5:21

is not suspicious. It

5:23

is not easily offended. It

5:26

is cheerful. It is generous.

5:28

It is optimistic. It

5:30

is amiable. And these

5:33

are qualities which help men and women

5:35

build earthly heavens and

5:38

family and friends who are true, loyal

5:41

and admiring. So

5:43

be not easily offended. 3D

6:01

corporate megastores led by Walmart

6:03

and Target are pushing for long

6:05

cameras to take away your hard-earned

6:07

cash back and travel points to

6:09

line their pockets. The Durbin Marshall

6:11

Credit Card Bill would enact harmful

6:13

credit card routing mandates that would

6:15

end credit card rewards as we

6:17

know it. If you love your

6:19

credit card rewards, tell your lawmakers,

6:21

hands off, my rewards. Tell them

6:24

to oppose the Durbin Marshall Credit Card

6:26

Bill.
