Q&A with Mick Giannasi  Chairman of the Board for Social Care Wales share his thoughts on Policies and the effects of Covid19

Mick Giannasi retired from the police service in April 2011, after a distinguished career spanning 31 years. During that time, he served in three police forces in Wales and England and ultimately attained the rank of Chief Constable. He was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for his outstanding contribution to policing in 2011.

Mick began his policing career in Staffordshire in 1980. He rose quickly through the ranks and served in a variety of roles including uniformed operations, criminal investigation and emergency planning. As a Superintendent, he earned national recognition for his contribution to the development of policing strategy for dealing with environmental protest.

In 2002, Mick was appointed Assistant Chief Constable in Merseyside where he had responsibility for serious and organised crime, intelligence and specialist operations. He transferred to Gwent Police in 2005 as Deputy Chief Constable and was appointed Chief Constable in 2008. In addition to his local responsibilities, Mick made a substantial contribution to the work of the police service at a national level, most notably as the Association of Chief Police Officers lead for Roads Policing matters.

Following his retirement from the Police Service in 2011, Mick was appointed by Welsh Government to act as a Commissioner for the Isles of Anglesey County Council, an underperforming local authority which had been placed in Special Measures. He carried out that role until May 2013, when the Government’s intervention in the Council’s affairs was brought to a successful conclusion.

From September 2013 until April 2018, Mick was the Chair of Board of the Welsh Ambulance Service (NHS) Trust. During his tenure as Chair, he led the development of a replacement Board and oversaw the recruitment of a new CEO and senior management team. At the same time, he helped to deliver significant improvements in corporate governance and provided strategic oversight to the implementation of a revised delivery and accountability framework as part of a wider, national reform programme. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 2018 in recognition of his contribution to the National Health Service in Wales.

In August 2019, Mick was appointed Chair of the Board of Social Care Wales, a Welsh Government Sponsored Body which sets standards for the social care workforce and contributes to longer term improvement in the sector. He is also currently chairing the Independent Oversight Panel which was established by the Minister for Health and Social Services following an adverse review of maternity and neonatal services in the former Cwm Taf University Health Board area.
