‘All great parents follow a formula for success – and now you can too!’

I saw this headline online but it was aimed at entrepreneurs instead of parents.

It’s a headline that just makes you want to click through to get the easy answer, doesn’t it? To have it all laid out for you. Success. Guaranteed. Who wouldn’t want that?

You might have tried some parenting formulas. Do this + Do that = Your child behaving amazingly.

Maybe it worked for you. Maybe it didn’t. Maybe it worked for awhile. And then it stopped working.

I actually don’t really believe in parenting formulas.

Because parenting, to me, is not about a technique. It’s about the relationship between you and your child. It’s about the dynamic between the two of you.

That’s why I prefer to use a framework rather than a formula.

I think frameworks are more useful because they give you room to move. You can adapt parenting advice and information to your unique situation. You can tailor an approach to suit your family. And you can focus on your relationship with your child.

The framework that I like to use is: Know Your Child. Know Yourself.

I think it’s broad enough for you to find your own unique way. But it’s specific enough to give you something to focus on.

When we know our children, they feel loved and validated. And when we know ourselves, we also feel loved and validated and that means we can give our children the best of us.

Today I focus on knowing my child and knowing myself.
