Hello and welcome to feedback Friday. This is the day where I answer your parenting questions. This week, I have the question about how do I prioritise my time. Now, this is a difficult one, isn’t it? We are all so busy. We seem to be living such busy lives, and so do our children. It can be difficult to know what to do next, or what’s most important to do. If we were actually just focusing on raising our children, probably the most important thing we’re supposed to do as parents, is connect with our kids. But, there’s also so many other responsibilities. We’ve got, you know, running the household, we have work responsibilities, there’s probably other family members who need us. And of course, we’ve also have to look after ourselves.

How do I prioritise? Now, I’m not a big fan of the A-B-C-D, you know, work out what’s most important … What I have learned is how to actually include both some structure and flow in my days. I have a tendency to like structure. But what I’ve learned is that structure can sometimes mean that you’re kind of hemming yourself in, and you’re not actually allowing yourself enough flexibility to go with what’s happening in the moment, or happening in that day.

I like to have some rituals, which kind of shape our family life, but I also like to have the flexibility to do what I thinks most important at the time. The way that I work that out, is I actually have a process of checking in. What it involves is getting out of my head. That is really the most important thing to do, because our head can always be telling us what we should and shouldn’t be doing, this is more important and we have to keep going, and we can’t stop.

But, I actually have a process of getting out of my head, where I sink into my heart space, or into my intuitive space, and I really check in with how I’m feeling physically, emotionally, how others are feeling, and what’s going on around me. I ask myself, “What do I need now? What’s the next best thing to do?” I do this with my work. I do this with my home life, and it really is a very powerful practise. It means that sometimes I leave stuff that I think should be done, and I don’t do it. Sometimes it means that I actually just get up and go bang, bang, bang and it’s done.

The most important thing is getting out of my head and checking in and that’s when I find the next best thing that needs to be done.
