1:47

1:49

reason. for living without

1:52

her. I can't breathe. I

1:54

can't function.

2:09

Be yourself. We've

2:11

all heard it before. Encouragement

2:14

to get out into the world and embrace our

2:16

uniqueness. It sounds

2:18

delightful, almost poetic. Unfortunately,

2:21

it's not quite that simple for

2:24

most of us. in a world

2:26

where we are constantly told who

2:28

to be, forced to compare our

2:30

lives to celebrities, TikTok influencers,

2:33

or get rich quick gurus on social media.

2:36

Anxiety can easily and readily

2:38

set in. Many of us have

2:40

had that little voice in the back of our head

2:42

attends to show up uninvitedly, telling

2:45

us that we are simply not good

2:47

enough as ourselves. First

2:50

and foremost make no mistake. You

2:53

are good enough. It's perfectly normal

2:55

to have these feelings of doubt from time to

2:57

time. Well, we've all

2:59

been there, even the most

3:01

confident of people. And

3:04

a culture that's become so obsessed

3:06

with being perfect, or being the

3:08

prettiest or most successful. One

3:11

could argue that it is quite possibly

3:13

more difficult to be one's actual

3:16

true self now more than ever.

3:19

With all of these peripheral distractions deterring

3:21

us, how do we acknowledge and answer

3:24

those crucial existential questions?

3:26

Like who am I and what

3:29

will make me happy? Think

3:31

about it. Our dopamine receptors

3:33

tell us one thing that consumed

3:36

plus purchase will inevitably equal

3:38

eternal joy. But

3:40

you see that math can never

3:42

be correct because it is

3:45

not a sustainable equation. That

3:48

flood of serotonin from buying the forty

3:50

thousand dollar truck or taking the three

3:52

week destination vacation will

3:54

dry up quicker than you can say the word Instagram.

3:58

So what is the answer? Well,

4:01

it's hard to say as happiness

4:03

is different for everyone. But

4:05

every now and again, it's important to

4:07

stop and reflect and where we're at

4:10

currently. Ask if we are

4:12

truly satisfied with the way things are

4:14

going. And on the opposite spectrum,

4:16

there are people lucky enough to know exactly

4:19

who they are and what they want out of

4:21

life from a very young age. They've

4:24

also got the confidence to back it up.

4:27

Those people are special and that

4:29

quality is nothing short of a gift.

4:32

Regardless, one thing is

4:34

for certain. In this day

4:36

and age, seemingly everyone has the

4:38

right to freely express themselves as

4:40

they see fit. and are actually encouraged

4:43

to do so and it reconnects them

4:45

with their own sense of happiness and identity.

4:49

But that everyone places that same

4:51

ideological sanctity on freedom

4:53

of expression, that they do say

4:55

on freedom of speech. or

4:58

some claim that identity is a broad

5:00

spectrum. Others draw much

5:02

firmer boundaries. And when hatred

5:04

becomes part of that delineation, they

5:07

all have to be a little more careful who

5:10

we run into because

5:12

even in the year two thousand twenty two,

5:14

whether we want to believe it or not,

5:17

people still wind up dead

5:19

or simply being different.

5:46

It was the year two thousand one. And

5:48

on July sixth, a beautiful healthy

5:50

child had just been born in Vancouver,

5:52

Washington. just outside of Portland,

5:55

Oregon. That baby

5:57

boy was named Nicholas Kuhnhausen

5:59

and his mother Lisa Woods was

6:01

over the moon with joy. Nicholas

6:04

was a happy baby as soon as he

6:06

entered the world, but it didn't take

6:08

long for his mother, Lisa. realized

6:11

that her son wasn't like most

6:13

other little boys. They

6:15

called him Nikki, but even

6:17

as a toddler, Lisa knew

6:19

deep down that Nick didn't

6:21

quite feel like a boy at all.

6:24

She had been Nikki behind closed doors since

6:26

she was two years old and she had Hannah Montana

6:28

and high heels and makeup and we

6:32

would buy her girls clothes Lisa

6:34

remembers when the spelling of

6:36

Nikki, NICKY

6:38

changed to Nikki, NIKKI

6:42

very early on. Nicki

6:44

knew who she was and that person

6:46

had always been female. She

6:48

was Nicki with an eye from there

6:50

on out. The

6:52

first day of sixth grade, she came out Nikki,

6:55

and she was Nikki ever since, and she was

6:57

full of confidence. And people

6:59

were drawn to her

7:01

Lisa explains that it's just the way

7:03

it was. The love for her

7:05

child had never changed. It made

7:07

no difference. was around

7:09

middle school when Nikki really started

7:11

to come into her own. Her

7:14

family remembers when she discovered the

7:16

pop artist Nicki Minaj around

7:18

this time. Nicki Kuhnhausen

7:20

was obsessed. The brother

7:22

pinpoints this as the moment his sister

7:25

gained of the courage to come out as transgender

7:27

publicly. Nikki Minaj's

7:30

music empowered the younger Nikki

7:32

Kuhnhausen, She became inspired

7:34

and set a goal for herself. She

7:37

wanted to become her favorite rapper and singer's

7:39

makeup artist one day, Nicki

7:41

began using TikTok as they create

7:44

a form of expression, making

7:46

lip synch and dance videos to some

7:48

of Manoj's tunes. She

7:50

too had dreams of being a star just

7:52

like her idol. And Nicky was

7:54

unapologetically her charismatic and

7:57

vivacious self.

7:58

She just radiated

7:59

love.

8:00

She came

8:02

in contact with a lot of people,

8:04

and it was it was all ages,

8:07

all communities, all walks of life,

8:09

the homeless, the, you know, CEOs,

8:11

the, you know, she she could fit in anywhere

8:14

and bring something to the

8:16

situation that left them feeling good about themselves.

8:19

Caring is a word that many used to describe

8:22

her. But as much as she was compassionate,

8:24

she was equally resilient, and

8:27

quite frankly, she had to be.

8:30

See, Nikki didn't have the easiest

8:32

childhood. Though she had a great relationship

8:35

with her mother, Lisa suffers

8:37

from severe anxiety, as well

8:39

as a difficult history of substance

8:41

abuse. Nikki and her

8:43

siblings were forced to grow up fast.

8:46

Lisa will be the first to admit that a lot

8:48

of times, it was Nikki taking

8:50

care of her. Instead of the other way

8:53

around, On top of

8:55

this, Nikki's brother Alex had more

8:57

than a few run ins with the law. And

8:59

he had just recently been sent to prison

9:01

and was currently serving time for

9:03

possession of a stolen vehicle. This

9:06

was hard on Nikki. She

9:08

loved her brother dearly. And during these

9:10

difficult times, she used a social

9:13

media as an outlet, escaping

9:15

the trials and tribulations of a rocky

9:17

home life. Through song

9:19

and dance showcased online, Niki

9:22

began to amass somewhat of a following.

9:25

Though her mother says, she wasn't always

9:27

honest with the people viewing her content.

9:30

I told her that it wasn't right for

9:33

her to put her age at twenty

9:35

one when she was only seventeen. and

9:37

get men who are in their forties and thirties

9:40

to make comments about how beautiful she is

9:42

because she's more and more beautiful. than

9:45

that. And her beauty shouldn't shine

9:47

through men's comments like that. Nikki

9:50

Fox was the monicker she chose.

9:52

And she began to relish in the recognition

9:55

she was garnering online, particularly

9:58

that from older men. But

10:00

Nikki wasn't even eighteen years old,

10:03

and for obvious reasons, this concerned

10:05

her mother.

10:06

That's not where her self esteem and

10:10

beauty should come from. But

10:12

she loved the attention. She she

10:15

wanted to be Facebook famous. Despite

10:18

her mother's concerns, Nikki

10:20

wasn't worried. She assured

10:22

Lisa that everything was fine and

10:24

that she was just having some fun online.

10:28

Their relationship was unique. They

10:30

were more like best friends than a conventional

10:33

mother daughter pair. In

10:35

fact, they spoke every day. That's

10:37

when Lisa messaged her daughter the afternoon

10:40

of June six, twenty nineteen. Her

10:43

anxiety soon began to rise when

10:45

she didn't get a response. And

10:47

when she didn't answer my messages on June

10:50

six, I knew something was wrong. I

10:52

clocked in it too when she hadn't answered

10:54

my messages. But then all

10:56

morning, at four o'clock on my

10:58

first break, no response. At

11:00

lunch, I knew when my stomach something

11:02

was wrong, but I knew when she

11:05

didn't call me that day. That was

11:07

the first time in seventeen years we hadn't

11:09

talked and

11:10

I knew something was wrong. By

11:12

the time Nikki's mother got home from work

11:15

later that evening, she still hadn't

11:17

heard from her daughter. Lisa

11:19

attempted to convince herself that everything

11:21

was fine. and that Nikki was probably

11:23

just out with her friends somewhere. Perhaps

11:26

her imagination was just getting

11:28

the best of her. But as that

11:30

window of possibility started

11:32

to close, and the hours lapsed

11:35

into the following days, True

11:37

Panic began to set in. Nikki

11:39

was known for consistently creating content

11:42

for social media. Our

11:44

TikTok and Facebook videos were literally

11:46

uploaded every day like clockwork.

11:49

So when Nikki went completely silent

11:52

online with no activity whatsoever.

11:55

This was one more indication that

11:57

something was terribly wrong. After

12:00

what had surely felt like an eternity,

12:03

Lisa finally decided to file an official

12:05

missing persons report five days after

12:08

Nikki had first gone missing. on

12:10

June tenth twenty nineteen. Investigators

12:13

began following what few leads they had

12:16

with the help of friends and family Hipps

12:18

eventually led authorities to Nikki's friends,

12:20

Tiffany and Faith's apartment. It

12:23

turns out Nikki had been staying with

12:25

the two at the time she was last

12:27

seen. They told authorities

12:29

that they too hadn't heard from Nikki in the

12:31

past five day They said

12:34

all they knew was that she was talking

12:36

to some guy on Snapchat, that

12:38

she had left to hang out with him and simply

12:40

never return. The battery

12:42

on it Nikki's personal device was dead

12:45

at the time, so she had borrowed one of her

12:47

friend's cell phones to communicate with this

12:49

person through Snapchat before

12:51

she took off. When Tiffany

12:53

and Faith were asked if they knew who this

12:55

man was, they said they did

12:57

not. The only information they

13:00

had regarding this person was that

13:02

he was a quote, older Russian

13:04

guy. and that he drove a van. This

13:07

was based solely on what Nicky had

13:09

told them just before she walked out

13:11

the door. After finding

13:13

out that Nikki Kuhnhausen was a transgendered

13:16

a seventeen year old, a sense of urgency

13:19

increased for law enforcement. reason

13:22

being that trans individuals, statistically,

13:25

are four times more susceptible to becoming

13:27

victims of violent crimes in these

13:29

types of scenarios. For

13:32

perspective, the human rights campaign attracted

13:34

the deaths of twenty six transgender or

13:37

non gender conforming people. who

13:39

died as a result of homicidal violence

13:41

in the United States just the year before

13:43

in two thousand eighteen. These

13:45

numbers were not lost on law enforcement

13:48

WE'RE DESPERALLY TRYING TO LOCATE THE

13:50

KECOON HOUSE. Reporter:

13:52

A VANCOUVER TINE IS MISSING AND

13:54

13:57

one's heard from her since the beginning of this

13:59

month. She was

13:59

last seen getting into a man's car near fourth

14:02

plane boulevard and brand road.

14:04

That's where Fox World's Audrey Wheel joins

14:06

us live. Audrey? Yeah, this is

14:08

seventeen year old Nikki Kuhnhausen, and

14:11

family, friends, and investigators are

14:13

all deaths SPRIT TO FIND HER. THEY'VE

14:16

PASSED OUT ABOUT five hundred

14:18

OF THESE FLYERS, HOPING SOMEONE

14:20

CAN HELP. The

14:22

flyer held up by the reporter in

14:24

this local newscast read as follows.

14:27

Have you seen me missing from Vancouver,

14:30

Washington? Nicki G. Kuhnelson,

14:33

missing June fifth twenty nineteen.

14:36

Birthday, July sixth two thousand

14:38

one, went missing at seventeen

14:40

years old. identifies as

14:42

female, height five eight,

14:45

weight one hundred and twenty pounds, race

14:47

Caucasian, eye color hazel.

14:50

hair black at times with extensions, tattoos,

14:54

scars, and piercings, semi

14:56

colon tattoo on one of her wrists, She

14:59

has many scars, including on legs,

15:01

a thumb, stomach, thigh, and neck.

15:04

These fliers were plastered to nearly

15:06

every Starbucks liquor store and telephone

15:08

pole in the city. If you asked

15:10

any local in Vancouver, Washington during

15:13

this time frame, They would tell you

15:15

there wasn't a place you could go without

15:17

seeing Nikki's face with the words,

15:19

have you seen me plastered above her

15:21

photo? but there was

15:24

still no sign of Nikki. Time

15:26

only continued to pass. She

15:29

missed her high school graduation. something

15:32

she would never intentionally do.

15:35

By this point, Nikki's mother didn't know

15:37

what to think and her mental health was

15:39

in an increasingly fragile state.

15:41

becoming more vulnerable by the day with

15:44

worry of her daughter's well-being. Lisa

15:47

was only left to ponder the horrible possibilities

15:49

she had created in her head, what

15:51

might have happened to Nikki. The

15:54

only word to describe what Lisa must have

15:56

been going through is torture.

15:59

She's

15:59

being prevented

15:59

from contacting me. She is

16:02

being

16:03

ill.

16:05

In some situation, well,

16:06

she cannot reach me because that's all she's trying

16:09

to do right now. She's screaming for

16:11

me. She's calling out my name, and

16:13

I don't know where she is.

16:17

And I can't get to her. At

16:19

this time, there was no evidence to either

16:21

confirm nor deny what Lisa

16:24

was saying. But at the very least

16:26

in this scenario, Nikki was

16:28

alive. and as her mother,

16:30

she needed to keep that sense of hope

16:32

alive as well. With

16:34

that being said, this line of thinking

16:37

wasn't completely arbitrary and

16:39

out of the blue. As the

16:41

investigation progressed, more

16:43

facts regarding Nikki Kuhnhausen's past

16:45

were brought to light And it soon became

16:47

clear that the seventeen year old's life

16:50

was actually far more trouble than

16:52

what she had presented online.

16:55

place him and excused himself because

16:57

he got a call in his walking. And

17:00

he came back and he asked me if I'd ever heard

17:03

of case called the compound on sixty

17:05

third Street. I said, no, what's

17:07

that? Well, that was a detective

17:09

vice from sex trafficking and

17:11

prostitution, and he wreaked he knows Nikki's

17:14

name on the missing person's radio

17:16

as being red flagged from there. I

17:19

said, what does that mean red flagged? Well, she'd

17:21

been picked up from there many times. Her name's

17:23

red flag. And she was arrested.

17:26

No. She was underage. We took we took her

17:28

home. I

17:29

go, how

17:30

long has this been going on? Well, the first one

17:32

was eight months ago. I go, well, you

17:34

didn't bring her home to me, so where did you take

17:36

her? Well, she said her mom

17:38

moving back, miss. We took her out there. Miss,

17:41

you dropped my minor daughter off at someone

17:43

and you didn't ID them. Because

17:46

he never brought her home to her mother. Because I'll tell

17:48

you what, Nikki representing herself

17:50

in that world as

17:52

a girl. I'm not telling

17:54

the would get her killed.

17:57

Roughly eight months prior to Nikki's disappearance,

18:00

she'd been picked up by police. She

18:02

had been caught for soliciting prostitution

18:05

on more than one occasion. Being

18:07

that she was a minor, she was never

18:10

arrested Instead, as she was

18:12

dropped off in an address Nikki claimed

18:14

was her mother's house. But according

18:16

to Lisa, the address police brought

18:18

Nikki to was more than likely a

18:20

friend of hers. Lisa

18:22

claims she had a no idea Nikki

18:25

was a sex worker until the investigation

18:27

into her disappearance began. Investigators

18:31

also learned that her mother Lisa had kicked

18:33

Nikki out of her home within the last year

18:35

due to her struggling with a methamphetamine addiction.

18:39

Around the same time in twenty eighteen,

18:41

Nikki had also been a victim of an armed

18:44

robbery and subsequent shooting. Niki

18:46

herself was shot during that attack

18:49

a total of six times. The

18:51

entire thing, a result of an alleged

18:53

drug deal gone wrong. After

18:56

lengthy stay in the hospital, somehow

18:58

Nikki would walk away from the incident

19:00

without any life altering injuries. In

19:03

fact, she made a remarkable full

19:05

recovery after all six bullets

19:08

missed her major arteries and vital organs.

19:11

Her mother was aware of the shooting when it occurred,

19:13

but Lisa wondered if the gunman. I'd

19:16

just have come back to finish what he

19:18

had started.

19:19

She survived being shot six

19:21

times in the car and

19:23

he threw out of the car over

19:25

in Portland

19:26

and left her to die. The

19:28

first house she went to wouldn't open

19:30

the door for her. She crawled to the

19:32

next house, and

19:35

she made it through six times she was

19:37

shot. It's

19:38

obviously a miracle she survived

19:40

this ordeal in the first place. Nikki

19:43

did know the shooter, But in fear for

19:46

her own safety, she chose not to

19:48

identify him to the police. All

19:50

of these new findings regarding Nikki's

19:52

background only gave authorities

19:55

more cause for concern that her

19:57

life was undoubtedly in danger.

23:01

Investigation had fallen to a standstill.

23:04

There were no new leads, but the sole

23:06

focus was still identifying the,

23:09

quote, older Russian male. The

23:11

man presumed to have been the last person

23:13

to communicate with Nikki Kuhnhausen. On

23:16

June twenty seven, twenty nineteen, the

23:18

digital evidence cybercrime unit

23:20

subpoenaed an emergency search warrant

23:22

to Snapchat and was able to obtain

23:25

Nikki's records that very same day.

23:28

Authorities now had the data they needed

23:30

to find out who exactly Nikki had

23:32

been communicating with in the moments

23:35

leading up to her disappearance. Only

23:38

one username came back relative to the

23:40

timeline her friends had corroborated. And

23:42

that Nikki's very last digital footprints

23:44

led them directly to one man.

23:47

an individual named David Boggdonna.

23:51

So who is David Boggdonna? Well,

23:54

for starters, he was in fact the last

23:56

person who had spoken to Nikki on

23:59

paper at least. The Snapchat

24:01

records proved that definitively. but

24:03

how did they actually know each other?

24:06

After digging a bit more into Bhagdhanov's background,

24:09

it turns out he was an older Russian

24:11

guy. just like Nikki's friends had

24:13

suggested. He was twenty

24:16

five years old and stood at six feet

24:18

two inches tall. just over two hundred

24:20

pounds. His family were Russian

24:22

immigrants, most of whom currently resided

24:25

in Vancouver, Washington, including

24:27

David himself. David

24:29

was also the first of his family born in the

24:31

United States. O'Donough

24:34

was a construction worker by trade,

24:36

but that's about all the authorities had on him

24:38

at the time. He didn't have any

24:40

significant criminal history. Naturally,

24:43

the police needed to locate this individual

24:46

to learn more. And if anyone knew

24:48

what happened to Nikki Kuhnhausen, David

24:50

de Bagnonov more than likely held that

24:53

information. It had

24:55

been twenty two days since Nikki

24:57

was last seen. And authorities

24:59

had tried to make contact with David Bogdanov

25:01

at his brother Archer's apartment on June

25:03

twenty eight. When David's brother

25:06

answered the door, he was quick to tell

25:08

investigators that he had at no knowledge

25:10

of a Nikki Kuhnhausen. nor did

25:12

he know where his brother was. Detectives

25:15

then questioned David's other brother Stan,

25:18

but he too responded with a similar

25:20

story. It was difficult

25:22

to decipher whether or not they were telling

25:24

the truth, but detectives left

25:26

each brother with a card. along

25:29

with a verbal message requesting that

25:31

David give them a call as soon

25:33

as possible. After

25:35

virtually all of their attempts to reach him

25:37

had been fruitless. They figured

25:39

they'd try one more method of communication

25:42

they knew he was partial to.

25:44

Snapchat. Police

25:46

sent David several direct messages

25:48

on the app, all of which went unanswered.

25:52

One reason he may not have been responding,

25:54

however, was that David apparently

25:56

purchased a new phone just recently.

26:00

Another reason David couldn't be low cadence

26:02

was because he wasn't even in the Vancouver

26:05

area or the North American

26:07

continent for that matter. Law

26:09

enforcement eventually learned that just

26:11

hours after David's last documented

26:13

exchange with Nikki on Snapchat

26:15

the morning she disappeared, he booked

26:18

a one way ticket to Ukraine and

26:20

fled the country. On

26:22

July thirty first twenty nineteen, detectives

26:25

obtained a warrant for David Boggano's cell

26:28

phone and his geolocation data.

26:30

These records wouldn't be fully analyzed until

26:33

much later on. Meanwhile,

26:35

Nikki's family was left in limbo.

26:38

Months would go by without any indication

26:40

of where Nikki was or

26:42

what might have happened to her. In

26:44

September of that year, authorities finally

26:47

got a response from one of the men they had

26:49

been trying to get in touch with the

26:51

entire time. David

26:53

Bogdanov finally responded to

26:55

one of the digital crime units Snapchat

26:58

messages. He replied

27:00

by typing something to the effect of

27:03

Sorry, I've been having phone troubles.

27:06

Trying

27:06

their best to keep the conversation light,

27:09

so as not to scare bogged down of and

27:11

to ceasing all communication. Investigators

27:14

on the other end were successfully able

27:16

to convince him to come in to speak

27:18

with them. That meeting would finally

27:20

occur on October second two thousand

27:23

nineteen. Roughly four months

27:25

after Nikki had gone missing, By

27:28

the time authorities were able to sit down

27:30

with David, they'd already had a laundry

27:33

list of questions lined up that clearly

27:35

required some immediate responses. During

27:38

this interview, David surprisingly offered

27:41

up a lot of information voluntarily.

27:44

He admitted that he was with Nikki the morning

27:46

of June sixth and claimed that they

27:48

had met for the first time after bumping

27:50

into each other on Main Street in Vancouver.

27:54

David and his two brothers had been out at the

27:56

bars all night. And according to David,

27:58

all three men were heavily intoxicated.

28:01

which might have explained why Archer and

28:03

Stan couldn't remember Nikki. David

28:06

went on to explain that he gave Nikki

28:09

a bottle of vodka he had on his person

28:11

as well as his jacket because she

28:13

looked coal. He said they exchanged

28:16

contact information and then parted

28:18

ways but eventually met up again

28:20

later that same morning. After

28:22

providing a relatively vague recollection

28:24

of events and question, Gyanav

28:26

finishes by claiming that he and

28:29

Nikki eventually came to be alone

28:31

in his brother's work van. It

28:33

was at this point, Nikki allegedly revealed

28:36

to David that she was in fact

28:38

transgender. After

28:40

learning this, David has said he promptly asked

28:43

Nikki to exit the vehicle and

28:45

requested that she leave. He

28:47

said that Nikki got out and walked away on

28:49

foot and claimed that he never

28:51

saw her again. What struck

28:53

investigators as odd right away

28:55

however was just how upset David

28:58

seemed When recalling the moment,

29:00

he discovered Nikki was biologically

29:03

a male. When explaining

29:05

this portion of the story to detectives, he

29:08

showed a visible discomfort and

29:10

used words like shocked, disturbed,

29:12

and even disgusting when

29:14

referring to the admission Nikki had

29:16

made to him.

29:18

For me, it's even disturbing when I'm

29:20

around like a gay person or somebody

29:22

by or transsexual or something else.

29:24

I just got discussed it and I asked

29:27

her to just get out. As

29:29

much as detectives believed there was

29:31

more to the story than he was letting on,

29:34

The so called red flags alone

29:36

weren't enough to make an arrest. I

29:38

wish I could help you more, but III

29:41

don't know. I'm not the kind of person to

29:44

I'm not even a violent person at all, you know,

29:46

nothing.

29:48

Therefore, with no physical evidence tying

29:50

Boggdonough to a crime, he was free

29:52

to leave. A few days later,

29:54

the results of that search warrant on David's

29:57

phone came back. As expected,

29:59

evidence on his device showed some

30:01

grave inconsistencies from the

30:04

story he provided to detectives. After

30:07

analyzing the data, it was discovered

30:09

that David made a phone call to an adult

30:11

video store at around four AM.

30:14

He then made numerous calls to female

30:16

escort services around that same time.

30:19

And at around four fifty one AM,

30:21

David sent the first Snapchat message

30:24

initiating the conversation between

30:26

he and Nicky Kuhnhausen. During

30:29

their initial interview, David also told

30:31

investigators that after departing from

30:33

Nikki, he went to to a job site

30:35

in downtown Portland, Oregon. and

30:37

his cell phone records did not back up

30:40

that claim. Instead, around

30:42

eight AM, David's cell phone coordinates

30:45

placed him in the area of his brother Archer's

30:47

apartment near Main Street in Vancouver.

30:51

Most curious data point of all, however,

30:53

was that at around nine AM on

30:55

June sixth. The GPS data

30:57

showed that David traveled roughly

31:00

an hour away to a remote area in

31:02

Northeast Clark County. near

31:04

large mountain. Then at

31:06

around ten AM, his phone put David

31:08

arriving back at his brother's apartment. Bakganov

31:12

made it no mention of this trip up north

31:14

to investigators. Unfortunately, even

31:16

with this new information, it still

31:19

wasn't enough to make an arrest. After

31:22

several months and still no signs of any

31:24

substantial progress, a sense

31:26

of helplessness loomed heavily over

31:28

Vancouver, Washington. As

31:30

a whole, its citizens had become

31:32

so emotionally invested by now,

31:35

believing they would have found the seventeen year

31:37

old. Sadly, everyone

31:39

slowly began considering the fact

31:42

that this case very well could go

31:44

cold. As fall turned

31:46

to winter in two thousand nineteen, Nikki

31:49

Kuhnhausen was still nowhere

31:51

to be found.

32:07

Six long months had passed. Missing

32:10

persons' flyers were now faded and

32:12

torn from the frigid Pacific Northwest

32:15

air. Nikki's loved ones

32:17

were at a complete loss. Her

32:19

mother Lisa eventually broke down entirely

32:22

and was admitted to a mental health facility

32:24

for an extended period of time. The

32:26

overwhelming stress of not knowing where

32:29

her daughter was for this lot was

32:31

simply too much to bear.

32:33

I didn't know if she was being held against her will

32:35

in the sex trafficking industry and drug

32:37

and made to do things that were horrible.

32:40

I didn't know if she was being

32:43

shipped to another country, I

32:45

didn't know if

32:47

they had left her laying in a ditch and did

32:49

horrible things to her like, I read. I

32:51

had no idea, but I had nightmares. I had

32:53

nightmares about the facts. articles

32:56

were real about other transgenders that

32:58

been murdered. My fears and

33:00

my visions and my and my nightmares

33:03

were true stories. And for

33:05

six months, I prayed

33:07

that that wasn't what was happening. And

33:10

after months and months of not knowing,

33:13

Lisa Woods greatest fears would

33:15

inevitably come true on December

33:17

seventh two thousand nineteen. The

33:20

hiker was foraging for bare grass during

33:22

a cold and rainy day up on large mountain.

33:25

He came across a human skull. After

33:28

reporting the finding to authorities and over

33:30

the course of the following days, more

33:33

human remains would be discovered. spread

33:35

across the vast mountainous landscape. Forensic

33:39

crime scene units collected at various pieces

33:41

of jewelry along with a green jacket.

33:44

Investigators early on were fairly certain

33:46

that these were the remains of Nikki Kuhnhausen,

33:49

but due to the elements, it was hard

33:51

to be sure. Their

33:53

suspicions would be put to rest however

33:55

once and for all after Nikki's social

33:57

media profiles were meticulously analyzed.

33:59

It

34:01

was determined that the recovered jewelry

34:03

and the jacket found were all a match,

34:06

as seen worn in several of Nikki's

34:08

Facebook photos and TikTok videos.

34:11

But perhaps the most profound piece of evidence

34:13

discovered on large mountain may have actually

34:16

been a phone cord. a

34:18

long black charging wire that had been

34:20

wrapped in a lasso noose like fashion

34:23

discovered with a small clump of hair still

34:25

clinging to the cable. This

34:27

evidence was tested and inevitably came

34:29

back from the Washington State Crime Lab

34:32

as a match, that of seventeen

34:34

year old Nikki Kuhnhausen. Medical

34:37

examiner determined that Nikki's death

34:39

came the result of manual strangulation. A

34:42

cell phone cable found near her remains

34:45

was believed to have been the murder weapon.

34:47

Nikki's brother Alex was still in prison for

34:49

the larceny charge when he learned his sister

34:52

had been killed. He was taken

34:54

away from his cell and brought into an office

34:56

where he was delivered the tragic news.

34:59

After notifying Nikki's immediate family,

35:02

The obvious next order of business was

35:04

bringing David Boggadonna in for a

35:06

second round of questioning. Only

35:08

this time, he wouldn't be so talkative.

35:12

Good. Hey. How are you?

35:15

I got you some water here. So we're

35:17

gonna we're gonna take the handcuffs

35:19

on you. Alright. Do you

35:21

understand that this room is being

35:24

audio and video recorded? Sure.

35:27

This

35:29

interview took place on December seventeenth

35:31

to twenty nineteen. The news

35:34

of Nikki's death was officially made

35:36

public that same day. Investigators

35:39

were quick to confront David Bogdanov with

35:41

the incriminating evidence that lay before

35:43

him.

35:44

So before we before we go on, he's

35:46

basically summarized everything that you guys

35:48

talked about. Is

35:49

there anything that you wanna revise before

35:52

we continue on?

35:55

You mean, you might have stopped by the gas station.

35:58

Okay. So

35:59

at at the time that we talked, I didn't have

36:02

the benefit of all of your your

36:04

phone records. Okay? But but

36:06

now there's been some initial analysis done.

36:09

Okay.

36:10

So he left your phone left

36:13

Archer's house and then went

36:15

east. El

36:16

Paso, Marcher.

36:18

David suddenly goes silent

36:20

for several minutes.

36:22

You didn't just have a word. Did you? Didn't

36:25

go on top of the door. Okay.

36:29

Alright. It's

36:30

somewhat hard to make out, but David

36:33

says, I think I want to talk to a lawyer.

36:36

While it was David Boggedano's legal right

36:38

to request an attorney, Unfortunately

36:40

for him, he would have to wait for those

36:43

arrangements to be made while sitting

36:45

behind bars.

36:46

Sergeant that you're being arrested a

36:48

day from the murder, Nicky two passing, whose

36:52

remains had been discovered.

36:53

Okay? Who

36:56

was strangled a death?

36:58

k.

36:59

So we're gonna go ahead and put you back in handcuffs.

37:01

Alright?

37:02

on

37:11

David Bogdanov was arrested. The

37:14

following day, Vancouver police Eldon

37:16

official press conference. They provided

37:18

the specifics surrounding the remains

37:20

found along with the name of the man

37:23

who was being charged with this homicide.

37:25

So our victim in this case is Nicholas

37:28

or Nikki Kuhn Housing born

37:32

July sixth of two thousand and one. We

37:35

received report on June tenth

37:37

of this year by her mother, Lisa

37:39

Woods, and we were told that Nikki

37:42

was missing and rarely

37:44

went more than a day without contacting her

37:47

mother. And as we

37:49

work that case, We

37:52

cut probably the biggest break when

37:54

a citizen on December seventh of

37:56

this year. walking

37:58

in the large mountain area came across

37:59

a human scope.

38:01

Based on the location of the remains

38:03

and the earlier obtained evidence, detectives

38:06

decided to attempt the second interview with David.

38:09

We attempted contact with him yesterday, and

38:12

he declined to to

38:14

give any further statements. At that point,

38:16

he was arrested for second degree murder.

38:19

Magnaf was arraigned and held without bail

38:21

at the Clark County jail. A

38:23

few days later, a vigil was held for

38:26

Nikki at the Vancouver Church of Christ.

38:28

There wasn't an empty seat among the entire

38:31

congregation. friends, family,

38:33

and the allies of Nikki's all lined at

38:35

the church walls. Standing

38:38

room quickly became limited as well.

38:41

Here, members of the National Women's Coalition

38:43

against violence and exploitation would

38:45

speak, not only on Nikki's

38:47

behalf, On behalf of the gay and trans

38:50

community as well.

38:56

to not be killed for

38:58

the person you want to leave. While

39:00

Bhagavath awaited trial, a group

39:02

named the justice for Nicky Kuhnhausen task

39:05

force was born. This collective

39:07

was formed to help bring awareness to Nikki's

39:09

tragic case, but also to shed

39:11

a light on a root issue. violent

39:14

deaths within the gay and trans community,

39:17

numbers that are undeniably staggering

39:19

in America. The goal of

39:21

the organization was to make noise.

39:24

They demanded to be heard. They

39:26

made their presence known for Nikki at

39:28

every single bail hearing court

39:30

appearance and media opportunity that presented

39:33

itself. An example of

39:35

why this group's efforts were so necessary came

39:38

on January second two thousand twenty.

39:40

When a Clark County judge minimized Bogdanov's

39:43

bail restrictions due to his apparent

39:45

lack of criminal history. His

39:47

new bail was set for seven hundred and fifty

39:50

thousand dollars. Members of Nikki's

39:52

task force found this number to be

39:54

unacceptable. They showed

39:56

up to the courthouse en masse that following

39:58

day, protesting in great numbers

40:00

to express their discontent with

40:03

judge David Gregerson's decision.

40:05

We work six and a half months on looking

40:08

for Nikki Kuhnhausen.

40:11

And this man,

40:12

who chose

40:14

to dispose of her like trash,

40:16

strangled her

40:17

with her her own hair.

40:20

and leave work for no one to find

40:22

her for six and a half months, watched

40:24

as we all expect

40:26

resources tax

40:29

dollars and everything, media

40:32

attention, everything to

40:34

looking for her missing daughter

40:37

and they never called in even a

40:39

tip to say, yeah, you could find her there.

40:41

That's premeditation in my estimate.

40:44

And it's also a hate crime in my

40:46

estimate.

40:47

Nikki Goodhouse and did not

40:49

get justice today. Nikki

40:52

was a beautiful

40:53

young lady that everybody loved.

40:56

Michelle Bart, president of the National

40:59

Women's Coalition against a violence and exploitation

41:02

stood alongside Nikki's mother, Lisa,

41:04

while delivering this emotional message

41:06

to the media. several

41:08

others spoke as well. Eventually,

41:11

not just the word of Nikki's death, but the

41:13

perceived leniency of Boggadonna's bail

41:16

went viral online as well. Members

41:18

of the LGBTQ community from

41:20

all over began to express their outrage

41:23

on social media. Evidently,

41:25

this disruption would garner the appropriate

41:28

attention. Days later,

41:30

Bogg Adams charges were updated addition

41:33

to the existing second degree murder charge,

41:35

one count of malicious harassment

41:38

was added, which is effectively Washington

41:40

state's version of a hate crime. What

41:43

this meant was that Bogdanov would more

41:45

than likely be facing a harsher sentence.

41:48

How harsh? Well, that was still

41:50

a question of great concern. You

41:53

may have also asked yourself by now why

41:55

there was no statutory rate charge presented

41:57

in this case, being that Nikki

41:59

was just seventeen years old when she

42:01

was killed. Well, in the state

42:04

of Washington, the age of consent is

42:06

six teen. Therefore, this

42:08

charge would not be imposed. Additional

42:11

progress that was made, however, at

42:13

least in part by the justice for Nikki

42:15

task force would come months later.

42:18

On March twentieth two thousand twenty,

42:21

David Bogdanov's bail was raised

42:23

to two million dollars which ensured

42:25

a level of certainty. And Nikki's accused

42:27

killer wouldn't walk free before his trial,

42:30

which was effectively scheduled to begin

42:32

on August sixteenth of two thousand

42:34

twenty one.

42:43

This episode is probably brought to you by

42:45

Glatkin. Did you know that October

42:47

is national eczema awareness month?

42:50

According to the Asthma allergy Foundation

42:52

of America, why it's usually thought of as

42:54

childhood disease, around sixteen

42:56

and half million adults in the US

42:59

have eczema. And while it affects people

43:01

in various ways, Fifty one point

43:03

three percent of adults with atopic dermatitis,

43:05

the most common form of eczema, say

43:08

it limits their lifestyle. while thirty nine

43:10

percent say it causes them to avoid their social

43:14

Forty three percent say it affects their

uses micro balance, a revolutionary protein

43:36

that restores the balance of the good and

43:38

bad bacterias that live on your

43:40

43:43

ordered the eczema soothing cream for babies

43:45

This episode is also probably brought to you by

44:32

Smile Brilliant. Stop the expensive

44:34

guess and test method when it comes to teeth whitening

44:36

in oral care. If you're like me,

44:38

you're confused by all the variations of

44:40

teeth whitening on the market. I took

44:42

Smile Brilliant on as a sponsor because

44:44

they took the time to explain the science

44:47

behind teeth whitening, making me comfortable

44:49

recommending a product I knew little about

44:52

to all of you. For instance, did

44:54

you know that LED lights are a novelty

44:56

item? You actually need a high powered

44:58

UV light for it to accelerate the process.

45:00

Even then accelerating the process won't

45:02

actually make your teeth any wider. It

45:05

will merely shorten the sessions and increase

45:07

tooth sensitivity. And strips neglect

45:09

the gum lines, crevices, and molars. They

45:11

work, but your remaining stains will

45:13

be more prominent. Plus strips

45:16

use hydrogen peroxide, which always results

45:18

in greater tooth sensitivity in comparison

45:21

to carbamide peroxide. Charcoal

45:23

is abrasive and wears down the enamel, and

45:25

whitening toothpaste to only work on surface

45:27

stains, and like charcoal is also

45:29

abrasive. So what works? The

45:31

number one product recommended by dentists

45:34

is the custom fitted tray. Historically

45:36

dispensed only by dentists at a price

45:38

of three hundred one thousand dollars each.

45:41

That changed more than ten years ago when

45:43

Smile Brilliant came up with the innovative lab

45:45

direct process. Head over to smile

much more. Freshening your breath

46:21

David Bogdanov and his defense team

46:23

would not deny that he murdered Nikki

46:25

Kuhnhausen. They would not deny

46:28

that he'd supposed of her body and

46:30

evaded police in the months following her

46:32

death. Instead, Bogdanov

46:34

would tell the court that he killed

46:36

Nicki in self defense. Not

46:39

only would the alleged roll the dice

46:41

by participating in a jury trial,

46:43

you would also make the brazen to vision

46:46

to take the stand himself. The

46:49

world was still wondering how and

46:51

why Nikki had been killed, and

46:53

David Bogdanov would provide his recollection

46:56

of events, and that before divulging

46:58

some pretty telling information regarding

47:01

his general outlook on gay and

47:03

trans people.

47:04

The state offer testimony through your

47:06

girlfriend and or your ex girlfriend

47:08

Vanessa, where they talked

47:10

about you and her in the mall where

47:13

she said that you have served either

47:15

gay couple or heterosexual. Something

47:17

or gay bisexual or

47:19

transsexual couple. And you remarked

47:21

to her that it was disgusting.

47:24

that right?

47:25

Yeah. k? So do

47:28

you find homosexual activity

47:30

disgusting then?

47:31

i Yeah.

47:36

Keep in mind that this is Boggdano's attorney

47:39

asking him these questions at the moment.

47:41

By taking the stand, however, David Bogdanov

47:44

opened himself up to cross examination

47:46

by the prosecution, which we'll

47:49

hear in just a bit. We're

47:50

just sustaining assisted in the car,

47:52

parked on the road, and saw Nicky walk Nicky

47:55

walking across the street by herself. k.

47:57

Did you approach her?

47:59

Yes.

47:59

I did. I told my brother to wait in

48:02

the car, and I went

48:04

went in an approach to make you by myself. David

48:06

explains that at around three

48:08

AM, after drinking all night with his two

48:11

brothers, he saw Nikki from Stan's

48:13

passenger van. He gets

48:15

out and approaches her and gives her the

48:17

bottle of vodka as well as his jacket.

48:20

He goes on to explain the exchanging of

48:22

Snapchat information and the potential

48:25

of meeting up again, and then later sitting

48:27

in the car with Nikki. Those

48:29

details have not changed in David's

48:31

story for the most part. After

48:34

he came back to the vehicle from using the restroom,

48:36

Nikki had allegedly moved from the passenger's

48:39

seat to the back seat. What

48:41

Boggana reveals next are the crucial

48:43

details. He conveniently left

48:45

out in his previous interviews with police.

48:48

I opened my driver's door and saw that Nicky

48:50

was moved to the back

48:53

seat now in the back of the car.

48:55

Okay. And what was Nicky doing at that point?

48:59

choose smoking something out of

49:01

a pipe. Can you describe what

49:03

the pipe look like? Or this is just a

49:05

short last pipe.

49:07

k. there anything else you could describe

49:09

about it, such as smell, look,

49:12

anything else? Yeah.

49:13

Smells really, really strange.

49:15

Like, battery acid

49:17

or, like, when if electronics

49:20

get fried, a watt wired or something,

49:22

it's just this, like, chemically smell. It's

49:24

important to mention at this juncture in the

49:26

case that he and Nikki are now in the

49:28

back of his own vehicle, an Audi

49:31

A8L This vehicle

49:33

had never been mentioned previously to

49:35

investigators during their initial interviews.

49:38

David claims Nikki began smoking

49:40

meth from a glass pipe in the back seat of

49:42

his car. He thought it was strange

49:44

but wasn't going to make a big deal about

49:46

it, according to him. David

49:49

also has his license to carry and

49:51

stated that he almost always has a concealed

49:54

firearm on his person. David's

49:56

luxury vehicle was also reportedly brought

49:59

to a shop shop and destroyed after the

50:01

incident, while Bogdanov fled

50:03

to Ukraine. What you're about

50:05

to hear next might help explain why

50:07

he decided to put an eighty thousand

50:10

dollar car in the crusher. Well,

50:12

she invited me to come sit in the back. I

50:16

removed my gun. III told her that I concealed

50:18

carry And I have

50:20

a concealed carry permit since ma'am, so that she doesn't

50:23

freak out or anything. And

50:25

I I reached in

50:27

and wedged the gun between the center

50:29

console and the driver's seat, kinda pulled

50:31

the seat back and just wedged it. There's

50:34

where oftentimes had it. So if I'm sitting in the

50:36

driver's seat, it's right by my knee. I

50:39

sat in the back seat.

50:41

So what happens next?

50:43

You're in the back seat with Nikki. The

50:46

two of you, what happens next? Which

50:48

happened for a little bit. k?

50:52

How long did that last? A couple

50:55

minutes. A

50:56

minute. k? And

50:59

what proceeded from there? that

51:02

transitioned into us making out.

51:05

Okay. And so by making out, what

51:07

do you mean? Exchange

51:10

the light hood. So kissing

51:12

-- Yes. -- with tongue? Yes.

51:15

Is there touching or anything else?

51:18

Where was he touching you? While

51:21

testifying, David reaches for a

51:23

tissue as he begins to tear up and

51:25

sniffle.

51:26

she started touching me in

51:29

my private area. Okay.

51:33

So how long does this last?

51:36

Really short.

51:39

Okay? What happens

51:41

next?

51:43

Hi. On the

51:48

on the back of my pants, I've kind of

51:50

fallen down. Okay.

51:53

How far do you pull your pants down?

51:56

Sorry. Mid thigh. Okay.

51:59

And

51:59

the

52:01

Have you exposed your your penis?

52:04

Yes. Say, what happens

52:06

next? She

52:09

engages in giving

52:11

me all the sex. Okay?

52:14

This

52:14

was the very first time many of those

52:17

present in the courtroom that day and

52:19

earn anything regarding a sexual

52:21

encounter. What happens next?

52:24

I

52:27

I reach

52:29

over as she's bent over. I

52:31

reach over and put my hand in her pants.

52:35

Okay.

52:36

You gotta tell me about that. What do you feel when

52:38

you put your hands in her pants?

52:40

I worked

52:42

around the layer of layers of clothing,

52:45

and trouble was clearly a ball's

52:47

and penis.

52:49

Okay.

52:50

during the passionate sexual encounter, David

52:53

discovers that Nikki is in fact

52:55

biologically male. What's

52:57

going to your mind at that point?

53:01

I was in shock. I told

53:03

you I had just been deceived.

53:07

So what do you do next?

53:09

I freak out and

53:14

I

53:16

push her push her back. push

53:19

her back towards the passenger's door.

53:22

Bldana instantly flies into

53:24

a fit of rage, but he doesn't

53:26

ask Nikki to leave. Instead,

53:29

a physical altercation breaks out

53:31

inside of the car. And

53:33

let's just start

53:35

freaking out saying you know,

53:37

what the fuck? What what is this?

53:39

You didn't tell me you were to do started

53:42

to start yelling at her to just set

53:45

issues of disgusting disgusting

53:48

pieces of piece of crap. I'll

53:50

I'll tell I was I was trying

53:52

to pull my pants back up, and I'll tell her

53:54

to get and get the hell out of my car.

53:56

She lunges at me and hits

53:59

me across

53:59

the face. I shove her

54:02

shutter kinda hard to try and

54:04

push her back to her driver's seat and keep

54:07

telling her to. She doesn't get the fuck out of my car.

54:10

He says after physically throwing In Nikki

54:12

to the front of the car, she allegedly tries

54:15

to reach for his gun and had been wedged

54:17

between the center console and the seat.

54:20

thinking, you know, I just was

54:22

deceived by this person into

54:24

oral sex and this

54:27

person's high meth jeez,

54:29

jumping from my gun. At this

54:31

point, the overwhelming feeling

54:34

in thought was the kind of

54:36

fight or flight mode just

54:38

kicks in, and all I can think

54:40

is, oh my god, I'm gonna get a shot right now.

54:43

Bogdanov

54:43

claimed that he feared for his

54:45

life. So he grabbed a phone charging cable

54:48

and began to strangle Nikki.

54:50

And and that strangle III

54:52

grabbed that cable and

54:55

put it around her. And so

54:57

I can hold onto it and pull her back like

54:59

that. And holder holder

55:01

from from going keep going forward for the

55:03

gun. From

55:05

the back seat, David Boggdonove choked

55:07

one hundred and twenty pound Nikki Cunhuizen

55:10

with a charging cable until she was

55:12

dead. He claims he was only

55:14

trying to restrain Nicky from grabbing his

55:16

gun, but the cable inadvertently slipped

55:18

from her chest up to her neck.

55:21

It then goes on to explain how he panicked,

55:24

knowing that he had just killed someone.

55:26

He then tells the court what his line of thinking

55:29

was in the moments immediately following.

55:31

She

55:31

wasn't waking up.

55:34

and I started

55:37

I tried to check if she's breathing,

55:40

if you know. what she?

55:42

No. And I'm

55:44

scared, and I don't know what to do. I

55:48

first thing I think is I need to call police

55:52

the hand. And then

55:54

I think that they're not gonna

55:56

believe me. You know, I've been

55:58

up all night, not sober.

56:01

There's drugs in the car there's

56:04

a dead persons in the back seat. Yeah.

56:07

I just didn't think they're gonna believe me.

56:10

Here's a prime example of why taking

56:12

the stand in your own defense, especially

56:14

in a murder trial, is extremely

56:17

risky. When answering questions

56:19

from his own attorney, O'Donough continues

56:21

to reveal character traits and beliefs that

56:24

only seemed to backfire on his defense.

56:27

revealing his true colors.

56:29

Because this was a very humiliating

56:33

thing that happened to me at first, and

56:35

I was I was just scared.

56:39

I didn't

56:40

didn't want my family to No.

56:43

I just wanted to. But what's just behind me?

56:45

Like, where

56:46

she knows and that never happened? The

56:48

only sign of emotion Boggdata shows

56:51

is when he speaks about his family disowning

56:53

him. and the apparent humiliation he

56:55

feels for having had a sexual encounter

56:58

with a transgender person. It

57:00

displays no sense of remorse in regards

57:03

to actually taking another human life.

57:05

Instead, he refers to the aftermath

57:08

of his crime. as something he'd

57:10

simply prefer to quote, put behind

57:12

him. Bldhanath was familiar

57:14

with Large Mountain, as he'd shot

57:16

targets in the woods in that remote area sometime

57:19

before. Ultimately, he

57:21

thought this would be the best place to

57:23

dump the seventeen year old's body. just

57:25

after killing her. What

57:27

else one of their options did you consider

57:29

at that point? At

57:31

that point, I thought I need to

57:33

get rid of the body. did

57:35

you drive up there yourself? Yes.

57:38

k. And when you got up there, what

57:40

did you do? I pulled

57:43

her up. folder out of the car, and

57:45

it was that spot by the road.

57:47

The hill just went down really steep. I

57:49

just kind of pushed her right

57:51

further down that. Okay.

57:55

And at that point, you

57:57

never saw Nike again, I assume?

57:59

No.

58:00

Okay. Perhaps

58:02

in an effort to humanize their client

58:04

to the jury, the defense goes on

58:06

to ask Boggdonove why he fled

58:08

to Ukraine. He said he'd

58:10

blamed his drinking for the murder and went

58:12

to Europe to get sober. But

58:14

while he was there, he claimed he began having

58:16

a stream the panic attacks. He

58:19

allegedly started having nightmares about

58:21

the murder, seeing Nikki's face

58:23

in his sleep. He claims

58:25

this drove him to drinking once again,

58:28

but to an even greater degree of excess

58:30

than before. It's unclear

58:33

if any of this is actually true,

58:35

but the prosecution would soon have

58:37

their opportunity to question Boggdata. exposing

58:40

the kind of person he truly was

58:42

in the process. So

58:44

you didn't go to Ukraine for any type of alcohol

58:46

treatment program. I

58:48

went there to get Sorry

58:50

for lack of better expression to get my shit together.

58:53

I was I was emotional wrecking.

58:56

You

58:56

you fled there because you were afraid being

58:58

caught. So

58:59

what happened initially? Right? Initially.

59:05

So, initially, yes. That

59:08

was the one and only reason

59:10

you were buying a flight and then leaving an

59:12

hour later. Right? That's

59:14

all what I just told you. This is

59:16

a picture of niggie. Right? Yes.

59:19

This is a picture of the person you killed.

59:22

Right? Objection, argumentative. overrule?

59:26

Not intentionally. This is the person

59:28

you killed. Right? It's the person that died,

59:30

but non intentionally. This is the

59:32

person you strangle the death. Right?

59:35

It's the person that I was restraining from keeping

59:38

my gun and that's died. Restregulation

59:41

killed her. Correct? I

59:43

suppose.

59:44

Well, nothing else killed her. Right?

59:47

Right? I suppose. We

59:49

suppose her that's accurate. Yes.

59:52

Water? Yes. Your strangulation

59:53

and your turn life? Yes or

59:55

no. Yes. You don't

59:57

like any transgender people. Right? But

1:00:00

you don't like gay and

1:00:02

transgender people. Correct?

1:00:05

Not that I don't like him. I don't agree

1:00:07

with the lifestyle. I don't think it's very

1:00:10

wholesome. So

1:00:13

they are not wholesome people to you. You

1:00:15

were terrified of the thought of someone else thinking

1:00:18

that you were gay if they found out what happened between

1:00:20

you and Nikki? Well,

1:00:22

the Russian community isn't really

1:00:25

have. Doesn't have

1:00:27

taken the gay community with open arms?

1:00:30

Yeah. So yeah. It it would be

1:00:32

really bad for you if anybody ever found out about

1:00:34

this. Right? It would be humiliating

1:00:36

or probably shunned.

1:00:39

Yeah. You would be an outcast in your community. Right?

1:00:42

Yes. Your family would not talk

1:00:44

to you. Oh, they'd still

1:00:46

talk to me. They're my family, but It

1:00:50

wouldn't be the same way. Probably

1:00:53

not. It

1:00:54

was the clear intent of the state to prove

1:00:56

to the jury and David Boggana

1:00:59

was essentially a bigot, led

1:01:01

a strong dislike for gay and trans

1:01:03

people. And though he skirted

1:01:05

the line and admitting this openly himself

1:01:07

in court. He had absolutely no

1:01:09

reservations in admitting how

1:01:11

he found their, quote, lifestyle, disgusting,

1:01:14

and unwholes them. This was

1:01:16

important in establishing his potential

1:01:18

motive for the killing. It

1:01:20

was the prosecution's belief that Bogdanov

1:01:23

was so angry that he had been deceived

1:01:25

by the very kind of person he so openly

1:01:28

despised. That murder was

1:01:30

tragically the outcome. Due

1:01:32

to Boggana's religious background and rigid

1:01:35

family beliefs, he could not let anyone

1:01:37

find out that this event occurred. He

1:01:40

simply could not endure or live

1:01:42

down that kind of embarrassment as

1:01:44

he suggested while openly weeping in

1:01:46

court. Therefore, he

1:01:49

chose to dispose of Nikki's body

1:01:51

and carry on with life as though nothing

1:01:53

ever happened. Overall,

1:01:55

it was the prosecution's stance all

1:01:58

along that Nikki was killed solely

1:02:00

because she was trans, not because

1:02:02

she ever imposed any realistic threat

1:02:05

toward David Boggana. In

1:02:07

the end, it would be up to the jury to

1:02:09

decide. And after less than

1:02:11

two weeks, a unanimous verdict had

1:02:13

been reached.

1:02:23

On August twenty seventh two thousand

1:02:25

twenty one, twenty seven year old

1:02:27

David Bogg Johnav was found guilty

1:02:29

of second degree murder and malicious

1:02:31

harassment in the death of Nikki Kuhnhausen.

1:02:34

A few weeks later, he was sentenced to

1:02:37

the maximum allowable term for the convictions,

1:02:40

nineteen and a half years in prison.

1:02:43

In the state of Washington, a point system

1:02:45

is used during the sentencing phase of criminal

1:02:47

trials. The fact that David

1:02:49

Bogdanov did not have any significant

1:02:51

points or prior criminal history. weighed

1:02:54

greatly in determining how much prison time

1:02:56

could actually be handed down. While

1:02:59

a nineteen and half year sentence doesn't

1:03:01

seem adequate in comparison to

1:03:03

a human life lost. There were

1:03:05

some positive changes that came as

1:03:07

result of this case. March

1:03:10

fifth of two thousand twenty, Governor

1:03:12

Jay Inslee signed the Nikki Kuhnhausen

1:03:14

Act into law. The legislation

1:03:17

was designed to prevent the defendants who

1:03:19

were charged with violent crimes from

1:03:21

using a sexual orientation as

1:03:23

part of their defense. This

1:03:25

is more commonly known as the gay

1:03:27

or trans panic defense. While

1:03:30

Bob Donovan did claim self defense

1:03:32

in this case, there was a lot of

1:03:34

gray area and debate as to how

1:03:37

his legal representation gated

1:03:39

this thin lie. Regardless,

1:03:41

Nikki's law will abolish this legal

1:03:44

strategy altogether and prevent

1:03:46

it from ever being used again in the state

1:03:48

of Washington The justice

1:03:50

for Nikki task force played a pivotal

1:03:52

role in bringing these issues to the

1:03:54

forefront and essentially pushing

1:03:56

this law through their local government One

1:03:59

of the

1:03:59

founders of Nikki's task force, Linden

1:04:02

Walls, is someone who believes that because

1:04:04

legal strategies such as the gay

1:04:06

trans panic defense still exist.

1:04:09

There is still much work to be

1:04:11

done. Yeah.

1:04:12

My name is Linden Walls, and

1:04:14

I live in bank over Washington, the suburb

1:04:16

of Portland, Oregon. We

1:04:18

were grateful to have the opportunity to speak

1:04:20

with Linden about their involvement in

1:04:23

this case. the great loss that occurred,

1:04:25

and also what's been accomplished since

1:04:27

as well. Linen spends

1:04:30

a great deal of personal time in Vancouver

1:04:32

helping people in the transgender community

1:04:34

to feel safe. Professionally,

1:04:37

Linden works as a digital marketing coordinator

1:04:40

organizing social media campaigns

1:04:42

for small and medium sized businesses

1:04:44

in and around the city. We

1:04:46

were curious about how Linden first

1:04:48

learned of Nicki Kuhnhausen, And when

1:04:50

it was, they decided to get involved.

1:04:53

I first heard about Nikki Nikki

1:04:56

missing when Lisa

1:04:58

filed a police report and

1:05:00

local organization started helping flier

1:05:03

the area. So that was early

1:05:05

June. For me, the drive

1:05:07

to get involved with Nikki case was knowing

1:05:09

that a local trans team

1:05:12

had gone missing, and I got

1:05:14

involved after her remains had been found.

1:05:16

So her remains were found,

1:05:19

and then the task force kind of

1:05:21

was formed headed up by Devin Davis.

1:05:23

And Devin reached out to me, we had lunch,

1:05:25

and she was like, I need your help. So I

1:05:27

got involved because of my

1:05:30

love for the Vancouver community and

1:05:32

the Portland community and wanting

1:05:34

to make sure the trans story

1:05:37

was heard that that was

1:05:39

a part of the

1:05:41

prosecution's understanding of the

1:05:43

case because initially David

1:05:45

was not charged with the hate crime.

1:05:47

He was initially only charged

1:05:49

with murder. After

1:05:50

teaming up with Devin Davis and with

1:05:53

Linden's professional background, and

1:05:55

capturing eyes via online marketing.

1:05:57

The murder of a seventeen year old transgender

1:06:00

woman started getting a lot of attention

1:06:03

as intended. Nikki's

1:06:05

task force would allow her murder to be

1:06:07

ignored. Posthumously, Nikki

1:06:10

Kuhnhausen would become the vehicle of awareness

1:06:12

with the already volatile crime rate toward

1:06:15

gay and trans people in America. Linden

1:06:18

expands on why it was so important to

1:06:20

be vocal and vigilant. believing

1:06:22

that a precedent needed to be set.

1:06:25

Fortunately

1:06:25

for a lot of trends, people who

1:06:27

are murdered, people

1:06:29

aren't even found,

1:06:31

and so there is no prosecution in

1:06:34

a lot of cases. So, you

1:06:36

know, when when the murder of a trans

1:06:38

person does go two trial. Oftentimes,

1:06:41

it is a really gray area. Did this happen

1:06:43

because this person was trans or did this

1:06:45

happen of another circumstance.

1:06:48

And so a lot of times these types

1:06:50

of trials get acquitted or

1:06:53

end in a mistrial.

1:06:55

This gray area brings us back to the, quote,

1:06:58

trans panic defense. And if

1:07:00

Boggdonna have actually used it or

1:07:02

not, We wanted to get

1:07:04

Linden's thoughts on the matter.

1:07:06

Well, because Nikki's law

1:07:08

wasn't passed until after the murder

1:07:10

happened, he

1:07:12

could use that defense if he wanted,

1:07:14

and there wasn't anything that could

1:07:16

go back and retroactively stop that.

1:07:19

You know, it's very thin line

1:07:21

on whether or not he used it. And

1:07:23

that's, I guess, what a lot of people end

1:07:25

up talking about is, did he use a veiled

1:07:27

version of the Transatlantic Defense or

1:07:30

did he truly use a self defense

1:07:32

defense? We

1:07:34

also discussed David Bogdanov's testimony.

1:07:37

Linninn made the observation that Boggadonna

1:07:40

have constantly brought up religion, almost

1:07:42

as a way of justifying or at

1:07:44

least explaining his actions. A

1:07:47

feeble attempt to connect with the jury

1:07:49

seems to be the overall consensus here.

1:07:52

If you listen to David's full

1:07:54

testimony, a lot of it,

1:07:57

he talks about his religious beliefs

1:07:59

and how that motivated

1:08:02

his

1:08:03

world view on gay queer people.

1:08:06

It was a a hail Mary,

1:08:08

I guess, to maybe hopefully get

1:08:10

some people to believe them. But There

1:08:13

are undoubtedly many religions

1:08:15

that still openly denounce or do

1:08:17

not accept gay or trans lifestyles

1:08:19

and people. However, thou

1:08:21

shalt not kill is a pretty universal

1:08:24

ideology on that David

1:08:26

perhaps missed or slept through in bible

1:08:28

study. religious or

1:08:30

not, if you murder someone, gay,

1:08:32

trans or straight, and you're found

1:08:35

guilty for that crime, you go

1:08:37

to prison. Regardless, we

1:08:39

wanted to gain Linden's perspective on

1:08:41

the sentencing in this case as someone

1:08:43

who was there as it all unfolded.

1:08:46

So I think amongst the community, the

1:08:48

feeling was in the

1:08:51

in the Nike task force, at least we knew

1:08:53

that that this was best case scenario

1:08:55

was that nineteen and a half years was

1:08:58

the most that the judge would be

1:09:00

able to sentence him to if

1:09:02

he was found guilty on both counts he

1:09:06

didn't have any other

1:09:08

aggravated kind of stuff. He

1:09:10

didn't have any other criminal record

1:09:13

that

1:09:15

push him over to getting

1:09:17

more time. So because he had never been

1:09:19

found guilty of anything and just had minor

1:09:21

African fractions. You know,

1:09:24

Washington is on the sentencing schedule that's

1:09:26

based on prior offenses. So

1:09:28

he got the extent of what was

1:09:31

available to be given to him. And

1:09:34

the judge, I think, had kind

1:09:36

of expressed I

1:09:38

perceived him to have expressed in his

1:09:40

closing remarks before the sentencing how

1:09:43

dark and vicious this murder was

1:09:47

and that he wished that he could give him

1:09:49

more time, and he gave him

1:09:51

the extent because there was no remorse.

1:09:54

He was offered a chance to stand up

1:09:56

and talk to the family or the community.

1:09:59

And he didn't even say no, sir.

1:10:01

When the judge addressed him, he just not.

1:10:04

And to me, that

1:10:06

was, like, wow. He has zero

1:10:09

remorse or even care

1:10:11

for how the community is feeling

1:10:14

about what happened. There's there's

1:10:16

no regret in his in

1:10:18

anywhere in him. We

1:10:20

also asked Linden about the malicious

1:10:22

harassment charge in Washington state,

1:10:25

which really is a dressed up and more presentable

1:10:28

phrase for the term hate crime.

1:10:30

Linnin expressed their personal opinion

1:10:32

on changes that still need to be made in

1:10:34

Vancouver and beyond in regards

1:10:37

to the actual penalties associated with

1:10:39

this particular type of charge. Yeah.

1:10:42

And what are the things that

1:10:44

I would love to see in Washington? And this isn't

1:10:46

something that the task force necessarily. Well,

1:10:48

this is not something the task force is behind,

1:10:51

but something that I would like to see in Washington

1:10:53

State is more robust hate

1:10:56

crime law because malicious

1:10:59

harassment, if you look

1:11:01

at the definition, doesn't actually

1:11:03

include death. It's that

1:11:05

someone's property was destroyed, that

1:11:07

someone experienced a verbal or physical

1:11:09

assault, but it doesn't address death,

1:11:12

which is one of the parts that I

1:11:14

I see in being such

1:11:17

below sentence. The malicious harassment

1:11:19

only added a year and a half to

1:11:21

his sentence. It didn't actually add much

1:11:24

time. And so when people are like

1:11:26

US bound guilty of a hate crime, that

1:11:28

gets really tricky because just because

1:11:30

malicious harassment is a hate crime in

1:11:32

Washington state. doesn't mean it's

1:11:34

the same as what we think of when we think of

1:11:36

a hate crime at at the federal level.

1:11:39

Through

1:11:39

so much pain and trauma, we

1:11:41

wanted to learn more about the proverbial

1:11:44

light at the end of the tunnel, or

1:11:46

if there even was one. The

1:11:48

change that did occur as result of this

1:11:51

tragedy was Nikki's law.

1:11:53

And Linden takes us through the process of

1:11:55

how it came to be, and how it

1:11:57

is affecting communities nationwide

1:11:59

it to

1:12:00

this very day? So

1:12:02

the bill that was passed in Nikki's name

1:12:05

originally had been brought forward by

1:12:07

some local commissioners

1:12:10

in Washington State, and it stalled

1:12:12

out initially because everyone

1:12:14

voting Democrat and Republican also,

1:12:16

we don't have a need for this. This doesn't happen

1:12:18

in our state. We don't need a build

1:12:21

that fans something that's never

1:12:23

happened. And it was the next

1:12:25

year that Nikki went

1:12:27

missing that and they did a rush push

1:12:29

through it to get it passed into law

1:12:31

in early twenty twenty?

1:12:34

Since Nikki's law passed in Washington state,

1:12:37

Several other states have also followed

1:12:39

suit, banning the gay or trans panic

1:12:41

defense altogether. And

1:12:43

while the majority of states in the US

1:12:45

still allow this defense. Advocacy

1:12:48

groups such as the justice for Nikki

1:12:50

task force are currently and

1:12:52

actively pushing to end the legal

1:12:54

strategy throughout the country entirely.

1:12:58

Linden Walls has also since become

1:13:00

the spokesperson for Nikki's family

1:13:02

relating to all things press, media,

1:13:05

and this very podcast interview.

1:13:08

Linden remains close with Nikki's

1:13:10

mother to this day. getting

1:13:12

involved with them came

1:13:14

about because I

1:13:15

don't mind

1:13:17

supporting them in this way,

1:13:20

talking to people about this. is

1:13:22

not nearly as triggering to me as

1:13:24

it is to them. And if I can

1:13:26

take any of that burden off of

1:13:28

Lisa, and Nikki siblings,

1:13:31

then I'm happy to do stuff. Linden

1:13:33

went on to tell us that things haven't

1:13:36

gotten any easier for Lisa or Nikki's

1:13:38

family. After Nikki

1:13:40

was murdered, her husband, Nikki's

1:13:42

father contracted at COVID-nineteen. With

1:13:45

prior health complications, he would tragically

1:13:48

pass away due to the severity of

1:13:50

his illness. Before

1:13:52

our discussion came to a close, we wanted

1:13:54

to get Linden's thoughts on one last

1:13:56

thing. We wanted to gain a

1:13:58

better understanding of what the root of

1:14:00

this particular vein of violence might

1:14:03

be, where it comes from and

1:14:05

why gay and trans individuals? specifically

1:14:08

people of color are more at risk.

1:14:11

The main point we both arrived at

1:14:13

is that these crimes stem from

1:14:16

fear. When we strip down a

1:14:18

very complex issue to its most

1:14:20

basic form, that's ultimately

1:14:23

what it seems to boil down to.

1:14:25

the

1:14:25

trans community as a whole is

1:14:27

susceptible to more aggression

1:14:30

and hate because culturally

1:14:33

the trans community is still very

1:14:35

misunderstood or

1:14:37

there isn't a cultural understanding of

1:14:41

transgender people or people who may

1:14:43

live in the spectrum of gender

1:14:45

instead of the binaries of gender. So

1:14:48

culturally, it's something that's not

1:14:51

known and often as humans, we tend

1:14:53

to be scared of things that are unknown to us.

1:14:55

It's also human

1:14:57

nature to other and to then

1:15:00

cut off from other. You know,

1:15:03

we're scared of what's new. understanding

1:15:06

of personhood versus presentation

1:15:10

leads to more violence and more hate. David

1:15:12

Bogdanov admitted that he rejected

1:15:15

gay and trans people, aside from

1:15:17

ever meeting Nikki Kuhnhausen. He

1:15:20

was disgusted by the thought of a

1:15:22

trans person. Never mind mistakenly

1:15:24

taking part in a sex act with one.

1:15:27

Nicki misrepresented herself to a man

1:15:30

she didn't know. There's no denying

1:15:32

that this added to the already great

1:15:34

threat against her. However,

1:15:37

the fact of the matter is David

1:15:39

killed her because she was trans.

1:15:42

He had the right to be angry, He had

1:15:44

the right to be appalled even. He

1:15:47

even had the right to carry out a life

1:15:49

as someone who openly hated

1:15:51

despised or was disgusted by

1:15:54

gay and trans people from a

1:15:56

legal perspective if those are his

1:15:58

prerogatives. But instead,

1:16:00

he chose to murder the person he

1:16:02

felt deceived him. He

1:16:04

then chose to dump her body and

1:16:07

to leave her family grieving and

1:16:09

wondering where she had disappeared

1:16:11

to for over six months. So

1:16:14

where does the concept of fear come in?

1:16:17

According to the jury, David didn't

1:16:19

fear Nikki physically like he so

1:16:21

claimed in court. David

1:16:23

Boggadyf feared the idea

1:16:25

of someone like Nikki. See,

1:16:28

he believed a person like Nikki Kuhnhausen

1:16:31

is lesser or inferior. effectively

1:16:34

a second class citizen. Someone

1:16:37

like Nikki to David is

1:16:39

not equal.

1:16:40

Why not? While

1:16:41

you can run the gauntlet of reasons,

1:16:44

looking back to the way he was raised, his

1:16:46

participation in, and the views of the church,

1:16:48

or his shared abigoted values among

1:16:51

his family and peer groups. The

1:16:53

list goes on, but at the core,

1:16:56

David simply doesn't understand

1:16:58

and his ignorant. David

1:17:00

is uneducated. He

1:17:02

doesn't get gay or trans people,

1:17:05

and it never took the time to consider that

1:17:07

people might different from him.

1:17:10

That inability to accept these differences

1:17:13

on a human level is essentially what

1:17:15

manifested into a hateful rage.

1:17:18

which in turn eventually resulted

1:17:20

in a homicide. Linden

1:17:23

Walls believes that information is key.

1:17:25

and urges anyone that may be uninformed

1:17:28

regarding their gay and trans community to

1:17:30

do their due diligence. Take

1:17:32

the time to research and learn.

1:17:35

quite frankly as adults, that is

1:17:37

the responsibility of the individual and

1:17:40

no one else. It shouldn't be

1:17:42

a surprise that gay and trans people

1:17:44

exist. But frankly, it's

1:17:46

saddening even having to state that

1:17:48

obvious fact. But the more

1:17:50

effort we make as a society understand

1:17:54

those who may be seen as different.

1:17:56

The less room there inevitably will

1:17:58

be for hatred. Nicki

1:18:01

Kuhnhuizen wasn't a perfect person.

1:18:04

The odds were stacked against her before

1:18:06

she ever met David Boggdata. She

1:18:09

had a difficult life, but she

1:18:11

was still a kid. Gone

1:18:13

forever at just seventeen years

1:18:16

old, Nicki Kuhnhausen will

1:18:18

never have the opportunity to

1:18:20

better her situation. After

1:18:22

everything is all said and done at the end

1:18:24

of the day, we're all human. Perhaps

1:18:27

if David Bogdanov viewed Nikki

1:18:29

Kuhnhausen in this way, she would

1:18:32

still be alive today. I

1:18:34

think a lot of it is local education.

1:18:37

You know, we have the access to the Internet

1:18:39

at our fingertips. And if

1:18:41

someone is listening to

1:18:43

this podcast, then I would encourage

1:18:46

them to do some googling,

1:18:48

to understand what the term

1:18:50

man and trans woman need. What

1:18:54

it means to be non binary or a

1:18:56

gender, and just trying under

1:18:58

and the umbrella that trans

1:19:00

people are living under. You know,

1:19:02

almost every city has a queer

1:19:05

center or a a place where

1:19:07

gay and queer people can come

1:19:09

together and celebrate. And

1:19:11

oftentimes, those groups or

1:19:14

those centers have groups or different

1:19:16

places for community members and allies.

1:19:19

A lot of that getting involved in the community,

1:19:22

getting to know trends and gay

1:19:24

people that your kids already

1:19:26

go to school with their parents, like,

1:19:29

you know, their even in small

1:19:31

rural towns, there are

1:19:33

gay people, there are trans people.

1:19:35

So educating yourself

1:19:38

and your children about

1:19:40

loving themselves and

1:19:42

others that they meet regardless of what

1:19:44

shape or form that they take. That's

1:19:47

the only way we can make a better society is

1:19:50

is pushing love and extending love

1:19:52

where there is otherwise hate or misunderstanding

1:19:55

and aggression.
