As educators, how do researchers incorporate industry engagement into teaching and learning? What does it take to establish and nurture these relationships? What specific strategies do academics employ to manage their workload? Are traditional and non-traditional research outcomes complementary or do they conflict? Do the costs outweigh the benefits, or do enterprising researchers enjoy a competitive advantage?Our moderator:Dr Jeremy Leggoe. Director Co-operative Education for Enterprise Development (CEED)Since graduating with a PhD from UWA, Jeremy has had a broad range of experiences in connecting Higher Education and Research institutions with Industry. As a postdoctoral research associate at Los Alamos, Dr Leggoe worked on a Cooperative Research and Development project with Procter & Gamble. This working relationship continued when he joined the Chemical Engineering Department at Texas Tech University. Since returning to UWA in 2008, Jeremy has served as the director of the CEED program, which links students to industry for research projects.Meet our panellists:Professor Shaun Collin (UWA School of Animal Biology)Shaun’s research explores sensory systems and the neural basis of behaviour in a range of vertebrates with a particular focus on sharks. In addition to over 230 international scientific publications, Shaun has worked with industry and government partners to test, develop, manufacture and market effective shark deterrents. Dr Chantal Bourgault Du Coudray (UWA School of Humanities)Chantal researches in the fields of cultural, gender and media studies. As a film-maker she has engaged with funding bodies including the Australian Film Commission and Screenwest. As an educator, she has cultivated strong industry partnerships to support work integrated learning opportunities for students through the UWA Arts Practicum and McCusker Centre for Citizenship.Professor Paul Flatau (UWA Business School)Paul is the Director of the Centre for Social Impact at the UWA Business School. In addition to over 100 publications in the fields of economics and social policy, Paul has forged a range of industry partnerships, engages in consultancy work, and actively takes part in policy and industry discussions.
