RATING
Perhaps the scariest podcast ever.
Tldr: the podcast had a truly excellent start, but it's too bad it didn't continue in the same fashion. The first ten episodes of the podcast describes the terrible prospect of the US descending (again) into civil war. It made a convincing, if rather terrifying, case that this was a probable future - and it still is, perhaps now more than it had been at the time of production. Despite the very grim outlook in those episodes, I thoroughly appreciated Robert Evan's effort laying out the various scenarios, going into the nasty details, and at the same time giving some hope that it may not be too late to change course. Regardless of minor production issues (probably due to low budget), and the darkness of the subject, those first ten episodes are gold. It's important stuff, and anyone worried about the current far right trend in the US should definitely listen to it. Five stars there, definitely highly recommended.Robert Evans could have left it at that, or perhaps adding some episodes now and then to keep the podcast up to date with recent events. He is great if left to himself, researching topics indepth, and presenting the results as he did in those first episodes. He certainly has the chops to pull that off, writing the narrative, and the slightly menacing voice to present it. If he had needed the funds to do so, I would have been happy to chip in, and I'm sure many others would have done the same. "The War on Everyone" (which I also strongly recommend!) raised over $40K, which should tell you something. Unfortunately, Robert somehow decided not to follow that course. There were a few good episodes initially, but the podcast has since taken a turn for the worse. Nowadays, it bears a striking resemblance to "Behind the bastards", with often poorly researched topics, not-so-great guests, and a team that doesn't make the episodes tick. It's just that it has become an entirely different show, and one that I'm really interested to listen to anymore.
Two extra stars for having very interesting content, for a total of three stars. Misophonia advisory: they blow their noses on mic, which tells you how much they care about audio quality and sensory accessibility overall, i.e. they do not care.
This honestly started out with a really cool premise and I thoroughly enjoyed the first few episodes. But it wasn't long before he ended up pushing his politics more and more.It just got too frustrating to finish. He has a premise for each episode and he does talk about the topic until around a quarter of the way through. After that, it just turns into him talking about how evil Right Wingers are and how they would be commiting genocide if they took over. There is one 15 minute segment in one episode where he even mentions Left Wing violence, out of around 4-5 hours demonizing the Right. It just turned into him playing Alex Jones audio clips and acting like most Christians would murder gay people if given the slightest chance. Fearmongering. If you are anywhere to the Right of Bernie Sanders you probably won't like it. It's pretty much exclusively for city dwelling Social Democrats.
It's a good podcast that imagines a near-future in which (mostly) right-wing actors turn to secession and violence as a reaction to traditional politics. The host tries to spend some time on the same scenario except with leftists at the center - but let's face it, the contemporary right makes it much easier to envision.
Love this podcast for what it does and the conversations it is having. The scripted skits are the superior episodes in my opinion, but I haven't hated an epsiode yet. Some of the banter based epsiodes can devlolve into less interesting territory but the chemistry usually keeps me engaged until they get back on the rails. My only concern is that some of these conversations are being held in a bit of an echochamber. But at least they are publicly accessable for critique.Good podcast. Worth listening. Makes you think.
Just started this show at the recommendation of a friend. This is great! Very interesting insights into the way we see the US vs. other countries. Absolutely worth listening to (whether American or part of another Western country, like me).
