Communication is much more than the words we speak. It is both verbal and non-verbal which means when we talk to someone, we're communicating more than we're saying. In fact, the words themselves only account for 7% of how others interpret what we say. 38% of interpretation lies in how we say things (tonality and inflection), and the remaining 55% is body language. Over 50% of what we say is interpreted through body language! Think about that the next time you text something important.
And talking is only part of the equation...
We have two ears and one mouth -- hearing isn't the same as listening. We selectively hear what is said through our filter based on past experiences, current mood, etc. and fill in the rest. Often, we pay more attention to what wasn't said than was and end up having a relationship with our assumptions more than the person standing before us.
