When I started making this, I just wanted to make something artful. Something unique. So I asked myself what could I do that was unique? Well, I'm a writer - I could write something unique.
But how in the world do you write something unique? It's all been done before! Well, if it's all been done before, let's look back to what HAS been done. Let's take sounds that everybody will recognize, and use them in a new way to send a message, some sort of social commentary. But everybody and their uncle is doing social commentary these days, it's all over the internet. Loud, angry texts from person to person, verbally barraging through the anonymity and protection of a screen, how do you cut through all that and find a way to be heard?
You break the rules. Nobody ever spread a message or changed the world by sticking to what everybody is doing! So what can I do? What has enough structure that will shock people when broken? What is my attempt at a Titanic going to be? MUSIC!
Everybody loves music, everybody agrees it has structure, and nobody likes it when the rules are broken! So that's what we'll do. I'll get their attention with something they ought to hate and I'll make them LOVE it! I'll make them think:
What am I saying?
Is it romantic?
Is it personal?
Is it philosophical?
Is it psychological?
Is it political?
Is it parental?
Is it instructional?
Is it overcomplicated?
The answer to all of these questions is, YES! I fit in a little bit of all of these, through timing, through the words, through the conversation between the messages, through the fourth wall itself digging into when the songs were released and who released them!
It's true, this is my greatest attempt at thought-provoking, my focus isn't the average internet user, it's the overthinkers - the people who want a puzzle. After this, I think I'll go back to making dick jokes.
