Interview Notes

  • 1:14  – A little more about Miranda, her family and her work at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
  • 2:49 – Miranda was on Utah Business Magazine’s 40 Under 40 when she was 35
  • 3:22 – Reasons Miranda made the 40 Under 40 list: Interesting/various work experience including building an aggressive plan for increasing revenues. Nominated by a former colleague from 10 years prior. Miranda felt like being a good co-worker had an impact.
  • 6:49 – The best business advice Miranda has ever received: Her current boss told her to “think of your time as a finite resource.”Instead of finding balance, think of your time as a pie chart. Your time and priorities are divided up into slices and sometimes your work will require a bigger slice, other times your family will require more focus but it isn’t permanent. It’s not forever…you can always reallocate those slices. Your situation isn’t permanent.
  • 8:44 – More practical business advice: Volunteer for hard projects. You’ll grow as a person, employee, manager and that’s helped shaped Miranda’s career and personal life.
  • 10:53 – One of Miranda’s biggest professional successes: Without previous experience or much insight, Miranda planned and managed one of CMN’s largest events…a trip for 50 special children and their families to Washington D.C. where they met with the President of the United States. Hear about her experience in the White House.
  • 15:13 – What does Miranda hope to accomplish still? She hopes to continue with CMN for a long time. Their mission is to raise funds for local children’s hospitals and they can use that money however they most need it. Her goal is to help the organization raise a billion dollars a year. You can donate here.
  • 16:18 – In her own career, she hopes to have a “chief level” role where she can develop strategy.
  • 17:15 – Outside of the office Miranda enjoys learning and is trying to continue learning even after finishing her MBA. She’s reading (listening to) books, exercising and playing with her kids/family.

Lightning Round

  • 18:32 – Miranda didn’t feel like she deserved to be on the 40 Under 40 list. It took her by surprise. She was embarrassed and flattered.
  • 19:05 – A book that’s had a significant impact on Miranda: Use What You’ve Got – Barbara Corcoran
  • 20:00 – Miranda gets energy from meeting new people, learning from people and companies. Quiet time is also important to collect her thoughts and recharge. Miranda likes long flights where she can read, catch up emails and pause. (Zara, handbags and shopping = energy for Miranda too).
  • 21:26 – She uses Evernote for everything. Keeps track of notes, websites, photos and tags things by topic.
  • 22:16 – If Miranda were starting her career over – she would keep working on projects that were outside of her comfort zone. Her story about being an impromptu camera-women at a rodeo.
  • 24:04 – If Miranda were starting her career over – she would speak up more often. Progress on projects is made when people share their perspective despite their overall experience. And asked a lot more questions. If you were starting your career over again, what would you do differently?

Conclusion

  • 25:03 – Want to contact Miranda? Reach her on LinkedIn or Twitter
  • 25:32 – Her Final Piece of Advice – Experience New Things As Much As Possible. Volunteer for projects, travel to new places for perspective and meet new people. Learn as much as you can from everyone.
