José Carreras Live Performance & Interview
José Carreras took the world of opera by storm in the 1970s. Audiences were thrilled by one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century while directors and conductors praised his musicianship and dramatic power. By the age of 28, when most tenors are just getting started, he had already sung leading roles at the Metropolitan, the Vienna Staatsoper, Covent Garden and La Scala. At the height of his success, with hundreds of engagements scheduled around the world, disaster struck. In 1987 he was diagnosed with acute leukemia; doctors gave him only one chance in ten of surviving. Thanks to the skill of his doctors and his own extraordinary courage, José Carreras made a complete recovery and resumed his singing career. But he did more than that, he established the Jose Carreras International Leukemia Foundation and embarked on a series of concerts and recitals to raise money to support leukemia treatment and research. In one such concert in Rome in 1990, he performed with two old friends, fellow tenors Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. The unprecedented international popularity of the audio and video recordings of The Three Tenors concert led to a triumphant series of concerts by the trio, and exposed a vast new audience to the incomparable artistry of José Carreras. This performance was recorded at the Lyric Opera of Chicago during the 2004 International Achievement Summit. Mr. Carreras is joined for his last selection by the 17-year-old Hayley Westenra. This teenage soprano from New Zealand attended the Summit as a student delegate of the Academy of Achievement and has since gone on to a successful concert and recording career of her own.
