Saniya founded codeHER, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering minority populations, in 2016, during the summer before her freshman year in high school. She has presented her work at Johns Hopkins University and will be traveling to Morocco with her team next year to initiate a program there. Saniya is a strong proponent of equality and believes that all people, no matter their race, gender, or background, deserve equal opportunities. Through codeHER, she has been able to inspire the next generation of technologists, and build confidence in young girls everywhere. In the future, she aspires to pursue a career in social entrepreneurship, particularly at the nexus of technology, humanity, and business. She is passionate about using business and technology to change the world.

BREAKING THE BARRIERS HOLDING GIRLS BACK

codeHER is a non-profit organization that aspires to close the gender gap in engineering and computer science by targeting girls in their late elementary and middle school years. All of our programs have one goal: to expose girls to the fascinating fields of STEM and spark a passion in engineering that stays with them throughout their high-school and college years.

We are dedicated to increasing the participation of females in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by exposing young girls to STEM fields, boosting their self-esteem and confidence, encouraging mentors to support women and inspire throughout their academic and professional experiences, addressing the stereotypes and biases holding women back, and retaining women already in the STEM workforce. We have created several unique programs that will address each of these problems. In the end we just want to see more girls in computer science!

OUR STORY

Ever since elementary school, founder and CEO, Saniya Vashist, noticed that she has been the only girl in her computer science classes. By witnessing the gender gap first hand, she knew that this was a problem that had to be fixed. In the summer before her freshman year of high school, when she was just 13 years old, she founded codeHER, and her radical idea has since become a reality.
