As a27 year old working professional striving to continue to create andlive out a joyful, fulfilled life, I have come to the conclusionthat I'm not very comfortable with down time. In fact, I reallydespise the feeling of boredom. When I'm bored, I feel the need tocreate things to do for myself that will somehow impact my life ina more positive and productive way. As I reflect on the feeling ofboredom, I think about how there were so many times as a child thatI was bored. Not because I didn't have enough toys, or because Ididn't have people to play with (I have two siblings so there wasalways someone around), but because there were moments during myday when I was asked to just sit still and wait. Wait at thedoctors office, wait in line at the grocery store, wait for dinnerto be ready, wait for a movie to begin, wait for my turn on theswings. During those times waiting, I may have felt bored becausethere was nothing to do. However, I did not resort to creating“productive” tasks to fill my time. I accepted the boredom as apart of my day. Now, I'm not saying there were never any fits ortantrums, I'm sure there were plenty, but it was just a part oflife. Now as an adult, I feel as though I should never be bored. Isthis due to my own beliefs and standards that I've placed uponmyself? Yes, partly. Is it because of the constant stream ofinformation from our phones, tvs, computers, social media?Possibly. Is it possible for me to take control and change thisfeeling of discomfort? Absolutely.
