Is getting out of overwhelm what makes you happy?

Aristotle came to the unsurprising conclusion more than two thousand years ago that human beings want above all to be happy. American psychologist Mihaly Cskszentmihalyi added in 1961, "Happiness is pursued for its own sake, while any other goal-health, beauty, money, or power-is valued only because people expect it to make them happy.

Cskszentmihalyi sought a term for the state in which we feel happy. He called it "Flow." But when are you "in-flow"? In interviews with more than a thousand people, he found five common factors that all interviewees described when they talked about the term "happy."

Happiness, or even "flow," begins when you:

A) are focused on performing an acitivity.

B) that you decide for yourself,

C) that is neither too easy (bore-out) nor to difficult (burn-out).

D) that has a clear goal

E) to which you receive immediate feedback.

Cskszentmihalyi observed that people who are in a "flow" not only experience deep satisfaction but lose also the sense of time and self-perception- they are completely absorbed in their activity. Musicians, athletes, actors, doctors and painters spoke of the happiness they experienced as a result of strenuous activities, completely contrary to the widespread view that happiness is related to relaxation.
