If there were to be a letter pinned to us,

Interestingly enough, there are cultural

he would have some words for us. I wonder

what those words would be. You

that this is a season for us

on in my spiritual pilgrimage. You

know, there's some good stuff that

there some things that I, according to what

we find throughout Scripture, is

even our ability, even a lost

person's ability to do anything

good is because we are image

bearers of God. But the kind

of fruit that Jesus

is speaking of here is a

fruit that's going to be overflowing

from our life. And here's what

I know. You want that, but

you got a binary choice in front of you.

forts. Don't go too high. At one point he

came out and he looked up at me. He goes, that's

too high. You're

not going on. You're not building another

floor. I said, dad, one

more floor. He said, son, no, no,

no, no I'm not, you're not going any higher. And he's

yelling way up in the trees. He's going, they're

getting up into thin branches. There's nothing to

even attach your tree house to.

He said, don't be crazy.

And he said, by the way, be careful with

all these branches. This is a beautiful

birch tree. I said, all right, dad.

You know, there was one branch that got nicked

off as we were building

this thing. And

here's the amazing reality. Even

as a young boy that I remember seeing,

it wasn't just but a few days

when that tree laying on the ground that those

leaves began to wither. There

35:23

was no life in them. None at

35:25

all. It was gone.

Jesus is talking with his disciples

and he says these words, I am the vine,

you are the branches. Whoever abides

in me and I in him, he it

is the bears much fruit. For apart

Now who doesn't want that? But we've got a choice.

You know what we can do. We

can choose between proximity to

trying to produce fruit in our

own strength. I don't know

if you're anything like me at all. There's been times

in your life when you look at your life

as kind of the tail end

of the branch. And

you want to see love and joy and peace

coming out of you. And it doesn't seem

to be happening. That is God's

dinner bell to you and me, that

36:23

it is not our job to

36:25

produce fruit. Can I say this again?

It is not your job

to produce fruit.

That is God's work.

Do you know what a branch does? In

a vineyard. Hangs

out with the vine. That's

all a branch can do.

A branch in a vineyard disconnected

from a vine produce grapes? And the

answer is an obvious no.

And so the binary choice we have is

we've got an opportunity to choose

between two things. One

is utterly destructive, leads

to absolutely nothing, and

the other one is absolutely

certain that we will produce fruit

in our life. And there's no middle ground.

If we focus on our

life needing to produce

fruit. Here's what I find

invariably happens. The

more focus we have on

producing fruit in our

life, saying I should.

I gotta get my act together. I need to get my

life together. I need to walk into church

with a smile on my face. I need to

37:41

boom, boom, boom. The only

thing that we can produce in

37:46

our life is plastic fruit,

37:48

and those closest to us

37:50

know it. Because

37:54

in all of our efforts to produce

37:56

fruit in our life, we

37:58

lose proximity to

Jesus Christ. You

see, the branch's role

38:05

is to choose what are you

38:07

going to do? Are you going to

38:09

labor and strive in your own strength

and your fancy footwork to get the good

38:13

stuff going on in your life? Now

let me ask you. How's

that work for you? I

know what the answer is because I've lived this

nightmare. But

38:25

God by his grace and mercy.

He's whispering in your ear today.

I want you to bear much fruit.

It's to my glory that you

bear much fruit. Quit

trying to produce it in

your own strength.

Jesus said, I am the vine, you

are the branches. Whoever

Now the most amazing thing about this story.

I've seen this to be true in my own life. The

my relationship with Jesus.

The more I'm aware of the Holy Spirit

more I'm mindful of

the fact that we've got

a God who flung the stars

in space and knit me together and my

mother's womb, and he loves me so

much that he sent His Son to die

for me, and that the teachings

and the life of Jesus are given to

me, to flow through me,

and as I have proximity

to Jesus. And

I'm listening to the Spirit of God in

them. I'm conversing with God

through Jesus Christ. And

and it's not some weird

thing as I'm going down the road and I'm mindful

of the fact that I cannot produce

fruit in my driving, I cannot produce

fruit in my being a husband

to my bride, and I cannot produce

fruit. And being a good man to my

40:06

adult children, to my colleagues

here, I can't do it. But

the more I'm mindful of the power of the Holy Spirit,

the closer I draw near to Jesus.

And I'm not even looking at the other

end of my branch, my life.

But I'm focused on

my proximity to Jesus.

I glance over my shoulder

as I walk down the road with him,

and I go, whoa!

There is.

Love.

And joy and peace

and patience and kindness and goodness

and gentleness and faithfulness. There is self-control

coming out of my life. And

here's what's beautiful about that. You

can't claim it. You

you get is the privilege of looking
