1:01
you guys, as you can tell, it is
1:03
the very end of the month. It
1:06
is the very end of January, which
1:08
means this is the last unsolved case
1:10
for the month. Now, if you remember
1:12
a couple weeks back, I told you
1:14
guys that for the next couple months,
1:16
for the foreseeable future, I'm doing this
1:18
little experiment where every single month we
1:21
are dedicating each month to a different
1:23
true crime category. In January was unsolved
1:25
cases, and so because of that, since
1:27
we are at the end of the
1:29
month, this is going to be the
1:31
last unsolved case for a little bit.
1:34
So make sure you tune in next
1:36
week to find out what February's true
1:38
crime category is going to be. But
1:40
as you guys can tell by the
1:42
title of today's episode, today we are
1:44
talking about the unsolved case of my
1:46
Tres Richardson, and this is one that
1:48
I definitely knew that I wanted to
1:50
cover in the Unsolved Cases
1:52
Month. It was one that I was
1:55
not going to let slip by because
1:57
this is such a frustrating and interesting
1:59
time. infuriating case.
2:02
I wouldn't be surprised if some of you
2:04
do know this case because it did get
2:06
some publicity for how frustrating
2:08
it is and a lot of that
2:10
frustration does come from feeling like my
2:13
traces death was entirely preventable
2:15
and the entire case in and of
2:17
itself one thing after another is just
2:19
going to infuriate you I really do
2:21
believe that and I'm very interested to
2:23
hear what you guys think about this
2:25
case I still don't really know
2:27
where I stand on this case All I know is
2:29
that I just don't feel like my trees nor
2:32
her case were given the care that it deserves
2:34
But again, I'm very interested to hear what you
2:36
guys have to say about it So with that
2:38
being said let's jump right on into it today
2:41
My trees Richardson was born on April 30th in 1985
2:44
to her parents Latisse
2:46
and Michael now my trees his parents
2:49
were in high school when they became
2:51
pregnant with her So my trees was
2:53
raised in her early childhood by her
2:55
great-grandmother Mildred in Covina, California Now
2:58
during my trees his early childhood years
3:01
Her parents did split up and
3:03
her mom went on to marry a
3:05
new man named Larry now growing up
3:07
My trees was described as being a
3:10
ball of energy. She absolutely loved cheerleading
3:12
She loved dancing and she really had
3:14
this aura about her that made people
3:16
Gravitate towards her and want to be
3:19
her friend. My trees grew up in
3:21
Covina, California Which is where
3:23
she went to high school at South
3:25
Hills High School And then after that
3:27
she went on to attend Cal State
3:30
Fullerton where she received a degree in
3:32
psychology in 2008 My
3:34
trees was actually the first person
3:36
in her family to go to
3:38
college and during her senior year
3:40
She started interning for a psychologist
3:42
named Dr. Rhonda Hampton Dr.
3:45
Hampton really took my trees under her wing
3:47
and really acted as a mentor for her
3:49
when the two met in 2007 My
3:53
trees was an incredible student. She had a 4.0 GPA
3:55
and she graduated with honors in 2008
4:00
was very much a period for growth
4:02
for my trees as it is for
4:04
many people. She felt like a lot
4:06
of things in her life were starting
4:08
to fall into place and it was
4:10
also during college that my trees came
4:13
out to her family as a lesbian
4:15
and her family was incredibly supportive. My
4:18
trees always had a great relationship with her
4:20
family. She was very close to them. She
4:22
was very close to her dad, her mom,
4:24
and their support really meant the world to
4:26
her. After graduating from college,
4:28
my trees started multiple jobs
4:30
including being a store clerk.
4:32
She was also a go-go
4:34
dancer at an LGBTQ plus
4:36
club and she was also
4:39
doing her internship with Dr. Hampton. Along with
4:41
that, my trees was also thinking about going
4:43
to graduate school so that was something that
4:45
was on her mind for the future. Now
4:48
my trees did have a lot to look
4:50
forward to in her future. Things were looking
4:52
bright. She had a lot of great opportunities
4:54
in store and ahead of her. However, none
4:57
of that does not go without mentioning that
4:59
my trees definitely struggled with some
5:01
mental health struggles as well.
5:03
According to Dr. Hampton, she
5:05
claimed that while my trees
5:08
was interning for her, there
5:10
were several times that Dr.
5:12
Hampton became concerned about my
5:14
trees' behavior. My trees' friends
5:16
also noticed some of this behavior too
5:18
and they basically described it as my
5:20
trees just not acting like herself. She
5:23
wasn't her normal usual bubbly
5:25
self. She would go on these long
5:27
rants and these long tangents on social
5:29
media that just seemed to be
5:31
unlike her normal behavior and it made
5:34
her friends and loved ones concerned. Now
5:36
after graduating from college, my trees moved
5:38
back in with her great-grandmother Mildred and
5:40
Mildred was 91 at the
5:43
time of this so this was really great
5:45
for both of them because not only was
5:47
my trees able to spend some time with
5:49
her great-grandmother, just really had that quality bonding,
5:51
but it was also great for Mildred because
5:53
being 91, this meant that my trees could
5:55
help around the house, just help with some
5:57
things that were a little bit more challenging.
6:00
for Mildred to accomplish on her own.
6:02
So all of this brings us
6:04
to the night of September 16th
6:06
2009. Now this particular
6:09
night was a Wednesday and every
6:11
single Wednesday Mildred and mytrees had
6:13
this tradition of going out to
6:15
dinner together every single Wednesday. That
6:18
was their thing, that's what they
6:20
did. However, this specific night on
6:22
September 16th mytrees told
6:24
Mildred that she had some other
6:26
plans already set in place for
6:29
this night and asked if
6:31
the two of them could reschedule
6:33
their dinner and Mildred agreed this
6:35
was no big deal. They could
6:37
reschedule for another night. Now it's
6:39
not entirely clear what mytrees' secondary
6:41
plans were. However, what we do
6:44
know is that mytrees left the
6:46
apartment at approximately 5 p.m.
6:48
that night and headed towards Malibu
6:50
to go to the beach. Now
6:53
from where mytrees lived Malibu
6:55
was about a 40 mile
6:57
drive. Now after arriving in
6:59
Malibu mytrees drove over to
7:01
a restaurant called Joffrey's and
7:03
Joffrey's is a star-studded restaurant
7:05
known for its ocean views
7:07
and fine dining and when
7:10
mytrees arrived to the restaurant
7:12
her behavior right from the
7:14
very beginning seemed off. Now
7:16
Joffrey's only had valet parking so when mytrees
7:18
pulled up her car to the valet the
7:20
valet driver told her that he needed to
7:23
go and park the car in front of
7:25
her and then he would be right back
7:27
to park her car so to just wait
7:29
there for him. Now by the
7:31
time the valet driver got back
7:33
mytrees somehow had left her
7:35
own car and went and sat
7:38
in the valet driver's personal car.
7:40
Now the valet driver's personal
7:42
car was nearby and unlocked at
7:45
the time however again that's
7:47
just not normal behavior to wait for the
7:49
valet and instead go and sit in his
7:51
car. It didn't really make a lot of
7:54
sense and when the valet driver asked mytrees
7:56
what she was doing and to get out
7:58
of the car mytrees appeared. apparently just started
8:00
going on this tangent, she started rambling
8:02
and it didn't really make a lot of
8:05
sense. And when the valet driver asked
8:07
her to get out, according to him, my
8:09
trees just started mumbling a series of words
8:11
that didn't really make much sense. However,
8:13
nonetheless, she did get out of his car
8:16
eventually and walked into the restaurant. Now, when
8:18
my trees walked into the restaurant, there was
8:20
a table of seven sitting in the
8:22
dining area that my trees did not know.
8:24
She did not know these people. However, for
8:27
whatever reason, she pulled up a chair
8:29
and sat with them. Upon
8:31
sitting with them, these people said that
8:33
my trees started talking about things that
8:36
again, weren't making a whole lot of
8:38
sense. For example, she started talking about
8:40
how she was going to avenge the
8:42
death of Michael Jackson and how she
8:45
was from the planet Mars. Now,
8:48
while at the restaurant, my trees
8:50
ordered a steak as well as
8:52
a cocktail called an ocean breeze,
8:54
which totaled out to be $89.
8:58
When it came time for her to pay
9:00
her bill, she made a statement saying that
9:02
Mother Nature was going to take care of
9:04
it. And obviously that did
9:07
not hold up in this restaurant. So
9:09
they kept asking her to pay the
9:11
bill. And after several times of asking
9:13
and my trees is still not paying,
9:15
that is when the restaurant staff decided
9:18
to call the police and have them
9:20
come and remove my trees. Now
9:22
they did this for two reasons. First of all,
9:25
my trees was not paying her bill, but second
9:27
of all, the employees were worried about my trees'
9:29
state of mind. They didn't want to send
9:31
her off in her car, have her start
9:33
driving, because clearly there was something going on.
9:36
And so that is when they decided to call
9:39
the police. And I'm going to play that 911
9:41
call for you right now. Law social
9:43
share station, Deputy Sheleff, I can help you. Hi,
9:45
I'm calling from Joffrey's restaurant in
9:47
Malibu. We have
9:50
a guest here who is refusing to pay
9:52
her bill. And we think she may, she
9:54
sounds really crazy. She may be on drugs or something.
9:57
We are wondering if someone would come by and pick her up. So
10:00
police arrive at the restaurant and they go up
10:02
to my Triese and they escort her out of
10:04
the restaurant. And the first thing that they did
10:06
is they gave her a sobriety test because they
10:08
wanted to see what was really
10:10
going on here. They wanted to
10:12
see if my Triese was under
10:14
the influence. However, she ended up
10:16
passing this sobriety test, which police
10:18
were not expecting. Police then
10:20
went on to ask my Triese if she had
10:23
ever been diagnosed with any mental illnesses or if
10:25
she was on any medication to which my Triese
10:27
said no. Now, at
10:29
this point, police decided to search
10:31
my Triese's car and that is
10:33
when they found a very small
10:35
amount of marijuana in the center
10:38
console. It was actually less than
10:40
an ounce, so a very, very
10:42
small amount. However, nonetheless, this gave
10:44
police the green light to go
10:46
ahead and arrest my Triese and
10:48
take her to the Lost Hills
10:50
Police Station. Now, when the
10:53
arrest was made, it should be noted
10:55
that the arresting officer never mentioned any
10:57
of the odd behavior that my Triese
11:00
was displaying in his report. Now,
11:02
my Triese is actually only arrested
11:04
for defrauding as well as possession
11:06
of marijuana. And the public has
11:08
criticized this case a lot when
11:10
it comes to the police, however,
11:12
in particular with her arrest, because
11:14
they believe that the police should
11:16
have 5150'd my Triese
11:18
instead of just arresting her and taking
11:21
her to the police station. Now, if
11:23
you are unaware, a 5150 occurs when
11:25
a person who is arrested appears to
11:28
be mentally unstable or appears as a
11:30
danger to themselves or to others. And
11:32
so in these cases, they will be
11:34
sent to go under a 72-hour watch
11:36
for a psychiatric evaluation. And that did
11:38
not happen in my Triese's case, which
11:40
again, everyone was very confused about the
11:43
public being everyone, because in this case,
11:45
it is very clear that my Triese
11:47
is not acting like her normal self
11:49
and my Triese passed the sobriety test.
11:51
So this wasn't the case of her
11:53
being overly intoxicated, just being really drunk.
11:55
Something was definitely off here, which is
11:57
what the public has criticized police for.
12:00
Now after police and my Tres got
12:03
to the sheriff's department, my Tres' mother
12:05
Latisse ends up getting in contact with
12:07
the Lost Hills police after hearing from
12:09
Mildred about my Tres' arrest. Now when
12:12
my Tres was taken to the police
12:14
station she was given a phone call
12:16
and the only number that she knew
12:19
by heart was Mildred. So she calls
12:21
Mildred's phone and at this point it's
12:23
around 10 p.m. a little
12:25
after that and so Mildred who is 91
12:28
is not going to be able to drive
12:30
over to the Lost Hills Sheriff's Department
12:32
so instead that is when Mildred calls
12:35
Latisse. Now Latisse at the time was at
12:37
her house with her other daughter who was
12:39
much younger than my Tres. I believe she
12:41
was around 10 years old at this time
12:44
so this was not a case of Latisse
12:46
being able to just get in her car
12:48
and drive over. However Latisse did call to
12:50
get an update on her daughter. Now when
12:53
speaking to authorities Latisse told them that my
12:55
Tres was not from this area she did
12:58
not know where she was she was not
13:00
able to get home her car had been
13:02
towed and she did not want my Tres
13:05
being released without being there to pick her
13:07
up. That was something she emphasized a lot
13:09
to police and I'm actually going to play
13:11
that call for you right now. I am
13:14
calling I'm a little frappled right now
13:16
understand my daughter is being brought into
13:18
the station my Tres Richard's
13:20
son have they made it to the
13:22
station yet and she's been booked. Okay
13:26
do you know where she's coming
13:28
from? It's from Westouant out
13:30
in Malibu and I didn't even
13:32
think to get the name the
13:34
manager. The only place we have somebody that's
13:36
in custody that they just announced on the radio
13:39
that they're coming up is from Joffrey's in
13:42
South Pacific Highway. It's only
13:44
female that's being brought up to the station as
13:46
we speak they actually just put on the radio
13:48
right before you call. Okay
13:50
okay I'm her mother
13:52
and are you guys want to book
13:55
her and then release her on her
13:57
own recognites tonight because it's dark. She
14:00
doesn't have a car and I don't want her wandering out.
14:02
I'm totally just taking a bat because it
14:04
is so out of character for her. And
14:07
you'll see when she comes in, she's well spoken.
14:10
I think the only way I will come and
14:12
get her tonight is if you guys are gonna
14:14
release her tonight. If she's gonna
14:16
be held in custody for some type of
14:18
arraignment tomorrow, then I will wait until tomorrow.
14:20
She definitely has no place, you know, I
14:22
mean, she's not from that area and I
14:25
would hate to wake
14:27
up to a morning report. She's lost
14:29
somewhere with her head chopped off. I
14:32
guess I would have to come and get
14:34
her, oh my God. Now, as you can
14:36
tell in this call, Latisse is asking police
14:38
not to release her daughter, saying that she
14:40
wants to be there to pick her up,
14:42
really asking for updates. And at the very
14:44
end, it is just very eerie as you
14:46
can hear that final claim of Latisse saying
14:48
that she would hate to wake up and
14:50
hear on the news that her daughter was
14:52
found with her head chopped off. And it's
14:54
just, again, a very eerie comment and
14:56
very ironic when you see what ends
14:58
up happening here. Latisse herself
15:00
to this day claims that she doesn't
15:02
know why she made that comment. However,
15:04
she says that she will never forget
15:06
making it. Now, as you
15:08
can hear on this phone call between
15:11
Latisse and the police, the police reassured
15:13
her that Maitris was not going to
15:15
be released until later in the morning
15:17
on the 17th and that Latisse could
15:20
come and pick her up later that
15:22
morning. So with this reassurance and with
15:24
this confirmation, you can imagine Latisse's
15:26
confusion and frustration when she called
15:29
back at 4.30 in the morning
15:31
on the 17th to
15:34
learn that Maitris had already
15:36
been released. Police went
15:38
on to tell Latisse that they actually released
15:40
her daughter on September 17th at
15:43
approximately 12.28 a.m. So
15:46
just right after midnight. And also that
15:48
was about 30 minutes
15:50
after the phone call that
15:52
Latisse made to police. Now,
15:55
this automatically made Maitris'
15:57
family livid because again,
16:00
police reassured her that she was not
16:02
going to be released until later. So
16:05
not only were they livid at the
16:07
police for basically lying to their faces
16:09
and telling them one thing but then
16:11
doing the complete opposite, but they were
16:13
also terrified. Mytrees was released into an
16:15
area that she was not familiar with.
16:17
She didn't have her phone, she didn't
16:19
have her wallet, she didn't have her
16:21
car. She had no way of getting
16:23
anywhere. Now after Mytrees' arrest, her
16:26
car got towed to an impound lot, so
16:28
again she did not have her car, she
16:30
didn't have any of her belongings with her,
16:32
she was simply walking around Malibu by herself
16:34
without knowing anyone and without knowing the area.
16:37
Now while Malibu is a very nice area,
16:39
there are some dangers to it as well
16:41
and if you don't know the area well
16:43
enough, you could end up taking a wrong
16:45
turn and you can find yourself in the
16:47
canyon, there's no street lights and it's just
16:49
very very dangerous. There's a lot of windy
16:51
roads and a lot of blind spots and
16:54
again just all in all, no one ever
16:56
wants to be somewhere where they don't know
16:58
where they're going and they don't have any
17:00
of their belongings. That's not a position that
17:02
anyone wants to ever be in. Now an
17:04
hour after that call at 4 30 a.m.,
17:06
this is now 5 30 a.m., Lattice calls
17:11
the police station again and asks
17:13
them how long she has to
17:15
wait to file a missing persons
17:17
report for someone. Now again this
17:19
is an hour after learning that
17:21
Mytrees had been released at around
17:24
12 30. So she calls police back at 5 30
17:27
asking when can I file a missing persons report and
17:29
that is when they tell her that she needs to
17:31
wait 24 hours to
17:33
file that report. So again that's
17:35
at 5 30, she hangs
17:37
up the phone. Then another hour later at 6
17:40
30 in the morning, there is
17:42
a man named Bill Smith who
17:45
lived in Malibu and he called
17:47
police to report a trespasser in
17:49
his backyard. Now when asked to
17:51
give a description of the person
17:53
in his backyard, he pretty much
17:56
described Mytrees' physical appearance to a
17:58
T. Now Bill Smith lived
18:00
about six to eight miles away from
18:02
the police station and according to him
18:04
he said that he woke up and
18:06
looked outside his back window and saw
18:09
a woman in his yard just seemingly
18:11
hanging out. He said that she was
18:13
sprawled out on the wooden steps in
18:15
the back of his house and he
18:17
claimed that he opened his window and
18:19
asked if the woman was all right
18:21
to which the woman replied back that
18:24
she was quote-unquote just resting. Now what's
18:26
frustrating here is that because Latisse was
18:28
not able to file a missing persons
18:30
report for her daughter she was told that
18:32
she couldn't do that for 24 hours the
18:35
police did not know to be looking for
18:37
my trace at that time. So when they
18:39
get this call from Bill Smith at 6
18:42
30 in the morning they don't know
18:44
that it could possibly be this missing
18:46
woman that was just reported and released
18:48
earlier that night. So because they did
18:50
not know to look for her at
18:52
the time the pieces weren't connecting police
18:54
did not know hey the woman in
18:57
the backyard at Bill Smith's house could
18:59
possibly be this woman that we're looking
19:01
for. Do you

a podcast named Girl Talk where I'm basically
23:15
your big sister and we talk about boys,
23:17
girls, dating, sexuality, making money, like being the
23:19
best versions of ourselves. I never grew up with
23:21
a big sister and I like to say
23:23
that I'm the big sister of the internet
23:25
because I make a lot of mistakes. It's
23:27
kind of like seeing your older sister sneak out
23:29
of the house. You see that your older sister
23:31
is probably not the best influence, but hey, I
23:33
feel like the younger and more dumb you are,
23:35
the older and wiser you are, right? I just
23:38
want to talk to you. Let's have some Girl
23:40
Talk. Grab some wine, grab a

23:45
I don't see you there. Again that's Girl Talk
23:47

23:49
listen to podcasts. We'll
23:52
see
23:54
you next time. No.
24:01
Starting from the very beginning of this
24:03
case when my trees got arrested all
24:06
the way until up until when the
24:08
missing persons report was filed all the
24:10
way up until we're we are now
24:12
in this case there has been a
24:14
lot of criticism towards police from the
24:16
public and my treats his family's as
24:18
you how the police have conducted this
24:20
investigation. It just feels like there really
24:23
is a lack of initiative on their
24:25
part in this investigation. Snow A couple
24:27
days after the missing persons report was
24:29
filed, there was a search conducted through.
24:31
Called Canyon and Months in Edo
24:33
which is where Bill Smith home
24:35
was and this is supposed to
24:37
be a two day full on
24:39
very thorough investigation and very thorough
24:41
search. However this today search turned
24:43
into a one day search because
24:45
they had brought in search dogs
24:47
that did pick up my traces
24:49
send in Bill Smith's yard as
24:51
well as in the surrounding area.
24:53
However, the search was put on
24:55
pause when one of the search
24:58
dogs got overheat air to so
25:00
the search came to a standstill.
25:02
So once the case was turned over,
25:04
the Lapd decided to go to my
25:06
trees his car which was still in
25:08
the impound lot and see if they
25:10
could find anything. They're snow. Firstly, when
25:12
an opening the car they sound my
25:14
trees his cell phone, they found her,
25:16
wall, led all of her personal belongings
25:18
and they also found a lot of
25:20
journals and the car. That only said
25:22
into this theory is that my trees
25:24
was struggling mentally in these journals. There
25:26
were pages and pages of writing it.
25:29
I just didn't make a whole lot
25:31
of sense and police are actually chalked
25:33
it up to my trees not getting
25:35
a lot of sleep the night prior.
25:37
to. that was their theory about the
25:39
whole thing. Not that my trees could
25:41
be a struggling mentally, or maybe she
25:43
was going through some sort of a
25:45
manic episode, but instead it was just
25:47
because she didn't get enough sleep the
25:49
night before and knots why she was
25:51
writing all of these things. And these
25:53
journals know it was. also. at this
25:56
point during the investigation of the Lapd
25:58
psychologists looked into this case and. Who
26:00
did it.my traces the he the earth
26:02
could have been indicative of bipolar disorder.
26:04
however there was nothing really side after
26:07
that. Now at this point in the
26:09
investigation which he's had asked to see
26:11
the surveillance footage of my truth leaving
26:13
the station on the night as she
26:16
was release because she wanted to see
26:18
her daughter's mental state. she wanted to
26:20
see what direction my trees is going
26:22
and or really of there was anything
26:25
that could help see where my trees
26:27
wind. However the Loss Hills police have
26:29
that. They didn't have any camera
26:31
footage of my trees, but it
26:34
turns out of this is actually
26:36
a lie because there were cameras
26:38
outside of the police station and
26:41
there was footage of my trees
26:43
leaving the Last Hills Sheriff's Department
26:45
and shortly after she is seen
26:47
walking out. There is a different
26:50
deputy who also is seen leaving
26:52
the building from another door shortly
26:54
after and because of how close
26:56
in time their accents works. Detectives
26:59
from the Lapd. Believed that my
27:01
trees and this deputy put a potentially
27:03
cross paths at some point and they
27:05
wanted to know who this deputy was
27:08
and learn more about what exactly happened.
27:10
Snow according to Lapd, this is very
27:12
much a struggle to get the name
27:15
of this deputy. Last tells was not
27:17
very quick to turn this name over.
27:19
However, ultimately when they did it's the
27:22
Lapd learned that this specific a deputy
27:24
had been really just dropping someone off
27:26
our last hill station after arresting someone
27:29
on a traffic stop. And then
27:31
twenty minutes after he has seen leaving the
27:33
station again it's he was documented conducting another
27:35
traffic stop in a different area. So because
27:37
of this last cells claimed that there was
27:40
really no way that this specific deputy would
27:42
have had any involvement with my truth because
27:44
he was simply just there to drop them
27:47
off. He got back in his car and
27:49
then he was recorded doing a different traffic
27:51
stop about twenty minutes later. And this is
27:53
really only further confirmed because we know that
27:56
my trees with seen in Bill Smith back
27:58
at approximately six thirty. I'm so you think
28:00
about it that way. it is very unlikely
28:02
that this deputy would have had any interaction
28:05
with my trees, snow, my treats, his family
28:07
and the community. The public was really pushing
28:09
police at this point in the investigation. Stay
28:11
felt like police word, not worried about my
28:14
trees or what could have happened to her.
28:16
They felt like because my trees was not
28:18
way to.her in her case wasn't given the
28:21
same amount of care and urgency of that
28:23
other cases would get. So the pressure was
28:25
really on for police and it was partially
28:27
due to this pressure that about four months.
28:30
After my traces disappear and said
28:32
there was a massive massive search
28:34
for my trees on January Ninth,
28:36
two thousand and ten and is
28:38
actually ended up being one of
28:40
the largest searches in the Sheriff's
28:43
department has serious. There were over
28:45
three hundred volunteers. There were helicopters,
28:47
horses, search dogs, people on foot
28:49
in. They covered about eighteen square
28:51
miles, which to give you a
28:54
different perspective is a little over
28:56
a levin thousand, five hundred and
28:58
twenty acres. They searched all. Through
29:00
Malibu Canyon. However, regardless, my trees was
29:02
not found out. There were many sightings
29:04
of my truth after she went missing,
29:07
and weirdly enough, a lot of these
29:09
sightings happened in Vegas. There were many
29:11
people in Vegas who claimed that they
29:13
had seen my trees and one of
29:15
which was her own garden. My goal:
29:18
Three weeks after the January ninth search
29:20
Michael with in Las Vegas sitting at
29:22
a traffic light when he claimed that
29:24
he saw a woman who looked identical
29:27
to my trees cross the street in
29:29
front of his car. snow michael claimed
29:31
that when he saw this woman he
29:33
immediately jumped out of the car and
29:35
started calling out his daughter's name he
29:37
was yelling my trees however at this
29:40
point the specific woman had gotten lost
29:42
in the crowd and he could not
29:44
find her again snow based off of
29:46
what michael claimed that he sauce he
29:48
believed that my trees at that point
29:50
could have been working as a sex
29:52
worker in vegas snow there was another
29:55
high school friend of my tree says
29:57
who claims that he also saw my
29:59
trees and one night. He
30:01
claimed that he was at a casino
30:03
with some of his friends when he
30:05
saw a woman who looked identical to
30:08
my trees and when he started calling
30:10
out her name, the woman quickly turned
30:12
around and ran away from him. So
30:14
at this point, because of these two
30:16
potential sightings, the LAPD went to Las
30:19
Vegas themselves to search for my trees
30:21
and in doing so, they spoke to
30:23
over about 70 different people
30:25
who claimed that they had seen my
30:27
trees and claimed that she did look
30:30
familiar and while this did
30:32
seem like a potential promising lead because police
30:34
now had all these people who said that
30:36
they've either seen my trees or that she
30:38
looks familiar or maybe they know her, you
30:40
know that is promising to them. However, ultimately
30:43
there was no other evidence to prove that
30:45
my trees was ever there. So this
30:47
ultimately brings us to Sunday, August 9th, 2010 at approximately
30:49
1 p.m. At
30:54
this time, the Malibu State Rangers were
30:56
hiking down Dark Canyon and this is
30:58
only a few miles away from Bill
31:00
Smith's backyard and this is a remote
31:02
location on the east side of Montanito.
31:04
Now the reason that the Rangers were
31:06
down there to begin with was because
31:09
this specific area had been reported to
31:11
have been doing a lot of illegal
31:13
growing of marijuana, so that is why
31:15
the Rangers were going to check it
31:17
out. However, when they got there, they
31:19
saw something far more
31:22
horrifying. While hiking, the
31:24
Rangers discovered several articles of clothing
31:26
in the nearby Creek area. They
31:28
initially saw a red leather strap
31:30
and then a black bra that
31:33
was partially covered with sticks and
31:35
leaves and different debris and then
31:37
finally a pair of blue jeans
31:39
that was also covered in debris.
31:41
However, ultimately they left these items
31:43
behind and continued walking until they
31:45
came across a human skull. The
31:48
skull was lying among debris and
31:50
the Ranger also saw dark curly
31:52
hair nearby. Now they didn't only just
31:55
find a skull, there was a skull
31:57
that was detached from the rest of
31:59
the body so the skull was detached
32:01
and there were also other bones as
32:04
well including a leg bone. Now
32:06
through dental records it was
32:08
revealed that the remains found
32:10
did in fact belong to
32:12
Maitreese Richardson. Now the process
32:14
of collecting these skeletal remains
32:16
and what happened next in
32:19
the investigation really is one
32:21
big mess. Immediately upon finding
32:23
the skeletal remains, the Rangers
32:25
contacted police who arrived via
32:27
helicopter on the scene shortly
32:29
after because it was very difficult
32:31
to get to this one place that
32:33
the Rangers were. This was a specific
32:35
area where really you would only know
32:37
to go there if you knew about
32:39
this area. This is not an area
32:41
that you would just stumble upon, it
32:43
was very particular. Now police
32:45
arrived via helicopter and when they
32:47
got there they saw the human
32:49
skull as well as a pelvic
32:51
bone and a leg bone lying
32:53
among the debris. Now after finding
32:55
the remains the police had contacted
32:57
the coroner department who had sent
32:59
a team to recover the remains
33:01
but the coroner team needed to
33:03
be airlifted as well but at
33:05
this point it was getting later
33:07
in the day the sun was
33:09
setting and they decided that it
33:11
would not be safe to have
33:13
the helicopter fly in the conditions
33:15
of that area and along with
33:17
that the helicopter had very limited
33:19
fuel on board and so because
33:21
of that the police made the
33:23
decision themselves to remove the remains
33:25
without the coroner team. Now this
33:27
is when things get very he-said
33:29
she-said because according to the LAPD
33:31
they claimed that they did in
33:33
fact get permission from the coroner
33:35
to remove the remains however the
33:37
coroner claims that they never gave
33:39
police permission to do this so
33:42
again there's been a lot of
33:44
back and forth in regards to
33:46
this. Now if that is correct
33:48
that the coroner did not give
33:50
permission and police just went ahead
33:52
and did that anyway that is
33:54
a violation against a state penal
33:56
code in California typically in any
33:58
homicide case when finding remains you
34:00
have the coroner team come out and
34:02
collect those remains, that way they can
34:04
take them back to the medical examiner's
34:06
office. The coroner team is specifically and
34:09
specially trained in doing this. They know
34:11
how to collect remains and maintain as
34:13
much DNA as possible. And not saying
34:15
the police don't know how to do
34:18
this, but again there is a team
34:20
designed specifically for that reason. Now once
34:22
the three remains, the skull, the pelvic
34:24
bone, and the leg were removed, police
34:26
discovered more remains and they moved them
34:29
to a plastic sheet inside of
34:31
a body bag. And the following
34:33
day on the 10th is when
34:35
the coroner team was finally able
34:37
to get to the remains site.
34:39
However, because the remains were removed
34:41
and it wasn't properly marked, the
34:43
coroner team wasn't able to locate
34:45
where exactly the remains were found.
34:47
So because of that, they were
34:49
unable to precisely locate the scene.
34:51
Now in regards to
34:54
the clothes that were found, police
34:56
also took these along with the
34:58
skeletal remains and everything was handed
35:00
over to the coroner. However, the
35:02
coroner had then given the clothing
35:04
to Mitrice's family shortly after receiving
35:06
it. Now the time frame on
35:09
when they gave the clothing to
35:11
her family is not completely clear
35:13
because right after her remains were
35:15
discovered, Lattice did a press conference
35:17
and claimed that she was not
35:19
allowed to see the clothes and
35:21
that she wanted to see the
35:23
clothes. So the clothes were eventually
35:25
given to her. However, when is
35:27
not entirely clear. But what
35:30
we do know is that once police
35:32
learned that the clothes were given to
35:34
Mitrice's family, they were not happy about
35:36
this because they never gave the coroner
35:39
authorization to do that. So they had
35:41
to go back to Mitrice's family and
35:43
recover the clothing after the fact. So
35:45
again, there was just a lot of
35:47
confusion when it came to collecting the
35:50
remains, collecting the clothes. It was just
35:52
one big mess. Now in terms of
35:54
the autopsy, the medical examiner was not
35:56
able to indicate a cause of death
35:58
because of the state of decomposition
36:01
that the remains were in. The
36:03
remains at this point were skeletal.
36:05
However, the medical examiner did say
36:07
that there was no evidence of
36:09
trauma. Now I do wanna mention
36:11
that there were several bones that
36:13
were not accounted for when it
36:15
came to the remains. These bones
36:17
included a hyoid bone, one twelfth
36:19
rib, a vertebrae, C4 to T2,
36:23
a xiphoid process, a coccyx,
36:25
five carperal bones on the
36:27
right hand, and multiple phalangeal
36:29
bones. So those bones were
36:31
not recovered. However, again, the coroner team
36:33
couldn't locate the remains site the following
36:35
day, so who knows what would
36:37
have happened if they were able to do that. Now
36:40
when it came to the theories on what
36:42
police believe could have happened to my Triesse,
36:44
they are not quick to point to foul
36:47
play. In fact, they believe that there was
36:49
no foul play in regards to my Triesse's
36:51
death. According to them, even though the cause
36:53
of death has not been determined, their main
36:55
theory is that my Triesse could have died
36:58
from anaphylactic shock from poison oak. Another
37:00
theory is that my Triesse could have gotten
37:02
bitten by a rattlesnake, which if that were
37:04
the case, she would have been one out
37:07
of two people a year who die in
37:09
California from a rattlesnake bite. But again, that
37:11
doesn't necessarily explain why her clothes would be
37:13
off. Police believe that animals could have been
37:15
the result of the missing clothing and her
37:18
clothes being off of her, but the clothing
37:20
that was recovered wasn't ripped to shreds. It
37:22
didn't seem to have gone through any sort
37:24
of fight. There wasn't a lot of wear
37:26
and tear on them in terms of an
37:29
animal ripping them off of her. It didn't
37:31
seem to be the state that they were in. So
37:34
it doesn't really make sense to believe that they
37:36
were the cause of an animal.
37:38
So again, those are just a couple
37:40
theories that the police have thrown out
37:42
there. But again, there isn't enough evidence
37:44
out there to prove, was this a
37:46
matter of foul play? Was there no
37:48
foul play? Was this a homicide? What
37:50
happened to my Triesse? There just isn't
37:52
enough information out there to make a
37:54
conclusion. Now my Triesse's family did sue
37:57
the county and received a settlement of $900,000. in
38:00
2011 and the latest update we do have in this
38:02
case was that in December of 2023 so just a
38:04
little over a month ago the reward was doubled to
38:07
$20,000 for any
38:13
information that could lead to what happened
38:15
to my trees that night but again
38:17
you guys that is where we stand
38:19
in this case that is what we
38:21
know about what happened to my trees
38:23
and it's such little information I know
38:25
it's so frustrating with these unsolved cases
38:27
trying to piece together what exactly happened
38:30
again I don't fully know where I lie on this
38:32
case I don't know if I necessarily believe that my
38:34
trees his case was a result of foul play or
38:36
if it was a homicide however I do believe that
38:38
there was a lot of negligence in my trees his
38:41
case that I believe for a fact I believe that
38:43
a lot of what happened in my trees his case
38:45
was entirely preventable but I am very interested to hear
38:47
what you guys have to say about this case so
38:49
