Doing Things with Words
An English language discussion of the ideologies, ideals, and ambitions that inform work with public audiences with Precious Chatterje-Doody, Isobel Palmer, Clemens Poole, and Jamie Rann. Precious Chatterje-Doody works with the AHRC-funded project “Reframing Russia: From Cold War to Information War'' which analyzes the multiplatform outputs of Russia’s international broadcaster, RT, and investigates its impact upon target audiences. Her work aims to make nuanced and complex findings accessible and understandable to public and policy making audiences. Isobel Palmer is a Lecturer in Russian at the University of Birmingham. She is currently completing a book about Russian debates around poetic form in the years leading up to and immediately following the revolution of 1917. This project focuses particularly on the impact of new technologies on ideas about poetry and its potential uses, as well as the new audiences for poetry that these poets and theorists envisioned, discovered, or tried to create. Clemens Poole is an artist and curator based in Kyiv, Ukraine. His projects and exhibitions have been presented in the US, Ukraine, and Germany. Since 2014 he has worked closely with the art foundation IZOLYATSIA as curator of a number of public engagement projects, in addition to a number of independent projects in Ukraine and the US. Jamie Rann is a Lecturer in Russian at the University of Glasgow. While his research focuses on Russian poetry of the early twentieth century, his public engagement activities have largely been devoted to trying to get speakers of English excited about contemporary Russian culture, in a broad sense: to do so he has worked as a translator and promoter of contemporary Russian literature and was for three years an editor of The Calvert Journal.
