Revelations about endemic abuse of children in homes run by religious orders are tragically common and internationally widespread. The case of Kuper Island is exacerbated by the racist dimension, but sadly not unique. The Canadian government clearly wished native peoples to assimilate at any cost, as in the USA, Australia, etc. Duncan Campbell Scott even used the phrase "final solution" long before it became synonymous with the Holocaust. The victims and witnesses demonstrated phenomenal strength in the honesty of their testimony, and the interviewers great delicacy in their questions, but no punches were pulled; it is a hard listen. Once again, the Roman Catholic Church should hang its head in shame. The Vatican's continued insistence upon male-only priests and a vow of celibacy actively prevents honest, family-oriented adults from getting involved. The policy clearly draws in paedophiles (and their accomplices) and creates a safe space for their crimes. It remains an outrage to this day.
