Lacquerware techniques were established in Kyoto during the 9th century, on the basis of Chinese techniques introduced from the Tang Dynasty. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the division of labor progressed in the lacquerware industry, which began thriving with the boom in the tea ceremony. Lacquerware products primarily made of wood(Japanese cypress, cedar, horse chestnut etc.) are used as tableware, furniture and tea ceremony utensils.
