1:11

Lakers Nation. Welcome into the Lakers

1:13

nation.com podcast. I am Trevor Lane.

1:15

Is Trey Young the right

1:17

target for the Lakers? Going to talk

1:19

about that a little bit today. Darvin Ham on his

1:22

way out. When is it going to happen? Maybe it's

1:24

happened by the time you're watching this. We'll talk a

1:26

little bit about that, the whole process, what that's all

1:28

about. Plus get into the mailbag.

1:30

Joining me today is Sean Davis. Sean, how are

1:32

you doing? I

1:35

am doing all right, Trevor. Very

1:39

excited for the show today. And yeah, maybe

1:41

Darvin is gone by the time this is

1:43

out. That's the thing. So

1:46

I guess we'll start there. By the way, we're

1:48

going to keep everybody as up to date as

1:50

we can over the offseason. Make sure you subscribe

1:53

to the Lakers Nation, YouTube channel, youtube.com/Lakers Nation. Tons

1:55

of stuff coming up for us to talk through, especially when

1:57

we get into roster building and all that. But

2:01

we're still waiting as of this moment.

2:04

Well, we're waiting. I've

2:08

seen the meme. Do you know what

2:10

it's from? I don't know if this is

2:12

too generational. Do

2:16

you know Caddyshack, the movie? I

2:19

know where the meme comes from. I

2:21

know where the meme comes from. Okay. Classic

2:24

movie. I keep a picture in my head. Yeah.

2:27

Sure. Well, we're

2:30

waiting. They're waiting for

2:32

Danny Noonan to putt. Yeah.

2:36

This is what we're doing right now. Now, those

2:38

of you watching this show, listening to this show,

2:41

it's possible the news has already come out because

2:43

this show is going to be coming out on

2:45

Friday. And the latest

2:47

reporting is that the Lakers, before the

2:49

end of the week, are going

2:51

to let go of Darvin Ham. Sean, is this

2:53

going to be the classic Friday 4.55

2:57

PM Pacific time news dump? Is

2:59

that how this is going to go down? I

3:02

am going to be on pins and needles throughout the

3:04

day. And I am just praying

3:07

that Darvin does not get fired early

3:09

in the day. Well, it

3:11

worked. So actually, 4.55 PM

3:13

Pacific time would be very

3:16

much appreciated. So Sean's hold

3:18

off on the article until

3:20

around that time will be

3:22

just fine. But no, I'm serious.

3:25

I think everything just lines up

3:27

for it to be this week, right? And for

3:29

it to be a day like today. I

3:32

mean, I actually don't know. You'd

3:34

hope this weekend. But Trevor, I

3:36

think just pull the bandit off, get started

3:39

with trying to evaluate the coaches available

3:41

on the market. And

3:44

I think that's the way I would go about it. Darvin

3:47

is, I think

3:51

most would say he's a good guy. I

3:54

wish no ill will, right? I

3:56

wish no ill will towards Darvin.

4:00

I hoped it worked out, but

4:02

I also think most people would

4:04

agree that it's not the right fit

4:06

right now. I think bottom line, right? Regardless of what

4:09

you want to say, you want to say Darvin is

4:11

a great guy? Sure. Yeah, he is.

4:14

You want to look at, and well, did the team win under

4:16

him? Yes, actually they had a

4:18

winning record. Ninety and seventy four, I believe, was

4:20

their record in the two seasons with Darvin. That's

4:22

a winning record. Back to back play on the

4:25

appearances. Oh, a bunch of conference finals, Berf. Ninety

4:28

and tournament champs, first time ever. Right?

4:32

There was a good, and I know, and

4:34

I know there was that tweet and everything,

4:36

but that is something. Right? Wait,

4:38

what tweet? The mayor? Yeah,

4:40

mayor. Yeah, yeah. At

4:43

least for the first

4:45

time we're in season champs. Like

4:49

there's got to be some prestige too. Like

4:51

I know people laugh at that now, but

4:55

again, the whole reason why that we said

4:57

the Lakers needed to hang the banner for

4:59

an in-season tournament championship was because we wanted

5:01

ten years from now people to

5:03

say, oh man, yeah, the in-season tournament

5:05

championship, that means something. That's something that's

5:07

important. And it's not

5:09

going to be if the Lakers right off the

5:11

bat say, oh no, forget

5:14

it. We're not even hanging that banner. Right? So

5:17

I know people like laugh about like, oh,

5:19

who cares in season tournament? But

5:21

it's something, it's an accomplishment. It's something that it's

5:23

something they did under Darvin. Isn't it NBA championship?

5:25

No, we're not by a long shot, but

5:27

it's something we can add to Darvin's resume,

5:29

right? Made the playoffs two years, went to

5:31

the Western Conference Finals one year, won the

5:33

in-season tournament championship. They were above 500 both

5:35

years. All

5:38

of those things sound like, why would you

5:40

get rid of that coach? But

5:43

I think it comes down to, did the

5:46

Lakers as a team, did the Lakers

5:48

players want to follow Darvin

5:50

Ham? I

5:53

don't think that's a yes. I

5:56

think, and Sean, I keep going back to this. I keep going back

5:59

to after. All the criticism

6:01

Darwin took, we heard

6:03

very little from the players

6:05

in their press conferences of

6:08

them defending Darwin. Very

6:10

little. The silence was noticeable.

6:14

So I think that really what it all

6:17

boils down to is that I

6:20

don't think Darwin was the leader this team

6:22

wanted. So

6:24

that's it. I think that supersedes

6:27

everything else and it's time

6:29

to move on and start this coaching search.

6:32

Am I missing something there? How do

6:34

you see this situation? Look,

6:38

again, I do want

6:40

to reiterate this point because I do think it matters.

6:43

By all intents and purposes, he's a good

6:45

guy. Like, haven't heard a bad

6:48

word about Darvin Ham from literally

6:50

anybody, from people. Yeah,

6:53

haven't heard anybody say a bad word about

6:55

Darwin, him the person. And

6:57

honestly, if he was the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets right now,

6:59

I would be rooting for him. Right. I

7:02

mean, 1974, a couple of playoff bursts

7:04

like, yeah, they would love that in Charlotte. Right.

7:06

But like you said, just wasn't the right fit

7:08

for what the Lakers needed currently. And

7:11

I think that you

7:13

talk about the silence is definite. I can't

7:16

stop going back to those quotes at the

7:18

game two and the one in the Shams

7:20

article. Like I keep

7:22

going back to the eight other, the two quotes I'm

7:24

referring to are when Nancy

7:27

Davis says I'm paraphrasing here that

7:29

the Lakers, you know, don't know

7:31

what they're doing out there on

7:33

the court, essentially. And then the

7:35

Shams Shrania article that I'm referring

7:37

to is where a player,

7:39

an unknown player, if correct me

7:41

if I'm wrong, Trevor, an unknown

7:43

player in the article states that,

7:45

you know, essentially layman's terms, you

7:47

know, we need to be coached

7:49

too. So basically saying that Darvam,

7:51

great guy, but, you know, we

7:54

need to actually get basketball

7:56

stuff done essentially. And

7:59

those are the two. things that stick out to

8:01

me Trevor's like okay if

8:03

those two things are the case and

8:06

the thing with Darwin is supposed

8:09

to be that he's this guy you want to

8:11

run through a brick wall through which

8:13

I have a very unfortunate

8:15

tweet back when Darwin got hired about

8:18

running through a brick wall but

8:21

she's also the times if

8:25

that clearly is like

8:27

gone away and the players don't feel

8:29

that way anymore and you're not this

8:31

strong tactician they have there really

8:33

isn't a reason to keep you around anymore because

8:35

you're yours you haven't really

8:37

in air quotes improves at the at the

8:39

thing that you're supposed to be lacking in

8:41

right which supposed to be some more of

8:43

the tactical stuff again that's the weakness for

8:45

example right or you haven't

8:48

you know incredibly improved rather

8:50

where it's like a big difference

8:53

and the thing that you're

8:55

supposed to be really really good at like doesn't

8:57

really have a positive impact on the team anymore

9:00

well then yeah like why are we here like

9:02

what are we doing here still so I

9:04

think ultimately to be the right decision and

9:06

yeah like you said we're willing yeah

9:10

move on and and we'll see what direction

9:12

hoping you did a job another

9:14

in another spot whether it's an assistant or

9:17

a head hope he gets another opportunity but

9:19

yeah just not the right fit yeah I

9:21

think that he ultimately will and a lot of people will

9:23

say oh well why did you hire him in the first

9:25

place here's the thing with

9:27

an assistant coach you don't

9:29

have a lot to fall back on you don't have

9:32

a lot that you could because it's

9:34

not like especially from our

9:36

lens from our right I feel

9:38

like more inside the league okay maybe you

9:40

gave but again a better gauge one because

9:43

you're actually interviewing the people something we're not

9:45

part of but yeah sorry sorry to interrupt

9:47

but I just want to have no

9:49

I was just gonna say you know for like

9:51

let's say the Lakers need a three-point shooter great

9:53

sure I can look at ten players I could

9:56

look at the three-point percentage their volume of shots

9:58

how they took those shots and have a pretty

10:00

good idea of exactly what they are as a

10:02

three point shooter. Garvin ham is on a coaching

10:04

staff as an assistant. I

10:06

don't know if he's running the offense. I

10:08

don't know if he's running the defense. I

10:10

don't know exactly what his responsibilities are. A

10:12

team can have a great offense because the,

10:15

the head coach is an offensive mastermind and

10:17

is just a genius

10:20

at creating offensive basketball. And one of their

10:22

assistant coaches can get hired on believing that

10:24

they also possess this trait

10:26

and they may not. So sometimes it's in an

10:28

exact science, figuring out who can be best at

10:30

a, at a coaching game, particularly if they haven't

10:32

had a head coaching job before. Like with Frank

10:35

Vogel coming in, we went, okay, those Pacers teams,

10:37

we know there, he's a good defensive coach. We've

10:39

seen it. He did it in Orlando too. We

10:41

know what some of his principles are because we've

10:43

seen him as a head coach. We know that

10:45

ultimately rolls up under him. It's

10:47

these guys that are assistants that are

10:50

tough. And that's where, when you're hiring a first time head

10:52

coach, sometimes you don't know exactly

10:54

how it's, how it's going to work out, which

10:56

begs the question. Will the Lakers assuming that

10:59

Darmanham does get let go, uh, will

11:02

they turn to a first time head coach or

11:04

will they look for somebody with head coaching experience?

11:06

I think that's going to be a fascinating thing

11:08

to watch. How does this whole process play out?

11:12

That's a topic that we're going to get into once

11:15

it's official, we're going to start breaking down

11:17

coaching candidates, all of that stuff, assuming that

11:19

is the direction the Lakers go. But

11:21

one of the other big things for the off season, we've

11:24

talked a lot, or I talked a lot yesterday on the

11:26

show about the roster build. Are you

11:28

going to go with a three star model? Are you going to go

11:30

with the depth model? And we talked about some of the pros and

11:33

cons of each and oh my

11:35

gosh, on it. There's, there are so many

11:37

different things in, in

11:39

the column of each one, right? So many things,

11:41

so many reasons why depth makes sense. So many

11:43

reasons why a three star build makes sense. And

11:46

LeBron being a big factor in all of this

11:48

too. But here's

11:50

the problem. I feel like

11:52

most people, when I put out there, if I

11:54

put it out there on X, if

11:56

I say, should the Lakers go for depth or should

11:59

they go for a three star model? third star, most

12:01

of the conversation, the

12:04

third star is Trey Young. That's

12:07

the way the conversation gets gets pulled

12:09

not conceptually a third star is that

12:11

the right decision it's should

12:13

Trey Young be that guy or not. And

12:16

I understand why I think he's the

12:19

most likely guy that's available that will

12:21

be available. I

12:23

don't know if there's going to be any other star out there on

12:25

the market. We have a pretty good feeling that Trey Young will be

12:28

could be Dejante Murray, one of those two guys, it's

12:30

going to get traded. So

12:34

I guess it comes down to this. Should

12:37

Trey Young be that guy? Should

12:39

the Lakers if he is available, if

12:42

they decide a three star model is the path

12:45

we want to go down? Should

12:48

they go all in to get

12:51

Trey? Where do you stand on that? So

12:55

there's a there's

12:58

a couple of different directions that I would like to

13:00

take this. First,

13:05

if you did, it's kind of plays

13:07

into the idea of like, do you go

13:09

three stars? Or do you go depth and

13:11

for a little while I just kept going

13:13

back and forth on this idea? Like do

13:15

you do three stars? Do you go try

13:17

to get Trey, Dejante, David Mitchell, Lori

13:20

Mark and it's been tossed around

13:22

like very, very loosely on media

13:24

recently. If you had let's

13:26

say same costs, Mark and then

13:31

Trey, which one would you take? I'm

13:35

also thinking long term. So I'm going to try which

13:37

is why my answer to this question is going to

13:39

be yes, because okay, this

13:41

is my argument also like

13:43

against going to depth route. Again,

13:46

you got to think in my opinion, you got to

13:48

think a little bit long term here too. Right?

13:51

Like yes, you are going in

13:53

my opinion going Trey gives you the

13:55

upside to win now, right?

13:57

Gives you upside to win now, but it also. can

14:00

help sustain you in the

14:02

long run post LeBron James because let's say

14:04

LeBron James resigns, right? And I think the

14:07

most likely thing that

14:09

happens this summer is

14:12

that LeBron James Ops out signs

14:14

a two plus one deal player option

14:16

third year Uh, no trade clause,

14:18

etc And he opts out after the second

14:20

seat or he opts out the player option

14:22

second year retires I think that's the most

14:24

likely outcome in my opinion I think brahb

14:26

signs for two more years essentially. I think

14:29

he's done after that, right? So let's play with this

14:31

word a little bit if you go

14:33

depth Or even if you go

14:35

lorry in this situation. I love lorry marketing. I

14:38

think he's probably a cleaner fit right now If

14:41

you go let's just focus on the the depth piece

14:43

here if you go depth, what is your plan? Post-bron

14:47

because you would you would still be sending out

14:49

these same assets that it would take to get

14:51

tray young To get in

14:53

air quotes depth. So what is

14:55

your plan? post

14:57

LeBron James Where it's 80s 30

15:00

30 right now, right 31. So 32

15:05

33 even Version

15:07

of acy davis with no other

15:09

true star that can kind of run

15:11

this show and help ad out Where

15:14

I don't think lorry kind

15:16

of builds that that uh, that

15:18

kind of responsibility If you will

15:21

as an on-ball creator lorry's awesome.

15:23

I think he is a great

15:26

All-star caliber player in the league, but it's

15:28

not for necessarily the consistent on-ball creation He

15:31

can do that But I think what makes

15:33

lorry so special is because he can do

15:35

literally everything on offense and maybe

15:37

that's the point to get him but um

15:40

with tray I think He

15:43

has his flaws I think his

15:45

flaws really impact you in the present

15:47

day lakers. That's why I used the

15:49

word upside earlier Um, and

15:52

they're all obvious. You've heard of him a million

15:54

times by now. It's he's he's small.

15:56

He's an undersized guard He's a

15:58

bad defender and The

16:00

off-ball fit raises concerns But

16:03

I don't I really don't think Trevor that we

16:05

like talk about the great stuff the tray does

16:07

because I feel like we just Hammer

16:10

home again. He's too small focus on the

16:12

night. I'm different. I like Dude

16:15

is a top five playmaker in the

16:17

league. I dare anybody to name five

16:19

playmakers currently better than him There is

16:21

a max for you can use you

16:24

can use Luca you can

16:26

argue broad yokich I think you'll get your

16:28

Luke are the two non-negotiables and

16:30

then you talk it like Howie right

16:32

Halliburton Tyler Sullivan. That's about it Okay,

16:34

he's one of the best on-ball scores

16:36

in the league terms of sub creation

16:39

ability I don't have a problem

16:41

with him in big-time games either like he could

16:43

he has consistently in the playoffs showed

16:45

up He did last year against those goons in

16:47

green where about what about this here?

16:51

About what about he was still hurt I

16:56

Look I know I agree with you But

16:59

we've seen this effect. I already see it on

17:01

social media people will we remember the last game

17:03

the guy was in He was not great in

17:06

the playing tournament with the house here. And again,

17:08

he was coming back from injury So you're you're

17:10

correct, but that's the response that's

17:12

gonna be out there. Yeah, so

17:14

I don't know I I Understand

17:17

the pick concerns and like I said, that's why I Do

17:21

think you are more going boomer bust currently,

17:23

but again also long term I think getting

17:25

Trey is the best potential

17:28

outlook in a post LeBron James Road

17:30

So that's why I say yeah I would go all

17:32

in on Trey by him open other options and I'm

17:34

curious what you have to say about that. So

17:37

I Feel like

17:39

Trey if you go all in on Trey

17:41

you are committing that he is the

17:43

guy for the future He is

17:45

the guy post LeBron, right? That's

17:48

that's what you are getting and if you're

17:50

gonna go if you believe that Trey Young

17:52

is that guy That he

17:54

is the star you want to build around

17:56

post LeBron Then you do what

17:59

you have to do to go get them. You

18:01

go to you part with whatever you have to part

18:03

with to get them. I'll tell

18:05

you what for Trejo, if it's someone else

18:08

I probably feel a little better about that. Like

18:12

look at Trejo, 43 million next season, 46 million

18:15

the season after that, then he's got a

18:17

player option at 49 million. Well an

18:22

early termination option anyway at 49 million the season

18:24

after that taking up almost 30% of your of

18:26

your cap there. I

18:29

don't know for sure that Trej Young

18:31

is a good value on that contract.

18:34

That's a lot for Trej Young

18:36

for a guy who again we talked about a Lakers team

18:38

where they had too many guys who only play one side

18:40

of the ball. That's a lot for a guy that only

18:42

plays one side of the ball. He

18:45

only plays offense. Defense he's going to

18:47

get picked apart. I

18:50

think he's very talented. I think he's very good. I

18:54

don't know what the fit is like with LeBron. I

18:56

think you while he can

18:59

shoot off ball he's not necessarily a

19:01

great off-ball player. He's at his

19:03

best when the ball is in his hands. We've seen that

19:05

with him playing next to Jonta Murray. So

19:08

I kind of worry that we get into a

19:10

quasi Russell Westbrook situation again. Not to say that

19:12

Trej Young and Russell Westbrook are the same. They're

19:14

not. I just mean where you're

19:16

trying to fit a square peg into a

19:18

round hole you're just hoping that talent supersedes

19:21

everything else because if Trej needs the ball

19:23

and LeBron's probably going to have the ball

19:25

in crunch time how

19:27

does that exactly work out? Do their skill sets

19:29

really fit? And then after that is Trej that

19:31

guy that you feel really good is going to

19:34

be the guy for you post

19:36

LeBron. So I

19:38

do wonder and again I like Trej Young

19:40

probably more than most do because there's a

19:42

lot of negativity out there but I

19:44

do wonder how much of it is if

19:47

the Lakers go for a three-star build. Is

19:49

Trej Young the guy or is

19:52

he just the guy that happens to be

19:54

available this summer? And

19:56

I worry that it's more of

19:58

the latter day. than the former that

20:01

in terms of stars, Donovan

20:03

Mitchell, let's say he stays in Cleveland or he

20:05

decides he's going to leave and then you get

20:07

outbid. Maybe Trey is just the

20:10

only guy that you realistically can get. And

20:12

so that's what you go do. And if you give up three

20:15

free future firsts, you

20:17

give up Austin, let's say Dilo walks

20:19

cause I can't imagine Dilo and Trey on the

20:21

same team. That probably doesn't work so well. You

20:24

say you're talking Austin, Rui,

20:27

Gabe, future first round picks

20:29

just to get their salary wise and

20:32

you're going to pay Trey that much money. I've

20:37

got to feel a hundred percent. Sure.

20:39

He's the guy for the future. And

20:41

he's the guy that is going to

20:44

take LeBron AD combined with them

20:46

and be a championship

20:49

contender for at least the next two years. That's

20:52

a lot to ask for. And I'm not a hundred percent.

20:54

I can say that about Trey young. So

20:57

I have two follow up questions. I just want to see what we're

20:59

around this. Do

21:02

you, if this

21:04

is Donovan Mitchell, do you do that trade? Why?

21:09

Cause I've got Donovan Mitchell ahead of Trey young. I think

21:11

he's that guy. I think he's the guy

21:13

at Winnie's healthy that would

21:16

be a better fit with LeBron and AD.

21:19

He's your guy that, that, uh,

21:21

can be that fit now and can be

21:23

that guy that you can build around and

21:26

as a duo with AD

21:29

for a couple of years after LeBron

21:31

as well. And so it's that added

21:34

component that I would go with.

21:36

And I know Donovan Mitchell, you need a new contract

21:38

and all of that, but I

21:40

don't have the defensive questions. Now I'm not saying he's

21:42

a great defender, but I don't have the defensive questions

21:45

about Donovan Mitchell that I do with Trey

21:47

young. So again, coming off of a

21:49

season where we saw the Lakers have too many

21:51

players who either played offense or defense and not

21:53

both. I want a guy who's

21:56

at least competent on both sides of that, especially if

21:58

they're going to be a star. that I'm

22:00

gonna try to build around. And I don't think that's Trey. And

22:02

again, I feel bad

22:04

saying this because I like Trey. I do. And

22:07

if Trey was making 30 million, 35 million, well,

22:11

I feel better. Right, I'd feel

22:13

better about it. I'm

22:15

just, I'm not even- That's not a robbery at that

22:18

point. Like Jayla Bronson making $24 million is

22:20

the best contract in NBA history.

22:24

Yeah, he's phenomenal. So, all right. But

22:26

anyway, what was your other question? You

22:29

kind of answered the other question. You

22:31

kind of answered the other question. Okay.

22:34

Because I agree with one part that you

22:36

said. I agree that Domimitra is the better fit

22:38

currently. And I feel like I've always said that.

22:41

If I have it, I want to make that

22:43

clear. Currently, I think Domimitra is

22:45

a better fit because I like, I have several

22:48

similar reasons you said. Not as many

22:50

defensive concerns. He's not a great defender

22:52

by any means, but still not a

22:55

turnstile, if you will, on that side of the

22:57

ball. And Domimitra

23:00

is a way better off-ball player,

23:02

right? But- He's also

23:04

older, we should note. He is two years

23:06

older than Trae Young, which may matter. But

23:09

long-term, I still personally, this is where

23:11

just we disagree, which is fun. I

23:15

personally do still in terms of, I

23:17

need a lead ball handler to kind of be

23:19

like that dude. And I have a

23:22

lob-catching freak athlete big. This just happens to

23:25

be one of the best defensive players in

23:27

the league that can play one-on-one, obviously, in

23:29

his own right, NAD. I

23:31

would personally rather pair in the

23:33

long run Trae Young with that.

23:35

But again, currently, give me, I

23:38

would prefer Donovan because of the

23:40

fit stuff. Long-term, I'm pretty heavy

23:42

on the Trae side, personally. How much

23:46

of a hit did Trae Young's game

23:48

take when the NBA legislated out

23:50

some of his foul-baiting stuff a couple of

23:52

years ago? They let Jay LaBruza

23:54

rock it out all the time. So I don't know.

23:56

I mean, Bruxin does the thing where he gets a

23:58

guy on his head. Kelly, you do it

24:00

by the way, that was a phenomenal game last night with

24:02

the mix in the great series. I

24:05

am all in on the next Sean. I am.

24:07

I'm completely in love. I hope they be Boston.

24:09

I would love to see it. I hold Brunson drops

24:11

48 game in that series. Josh,

24:15

two game winners. I

24:17

think they are a true proven

24:19

score away. Like, like Sean, if

24:21

they put, if you put like the Marta Rosen on

24:23

that team or something, if you put Laurie

24:26

Mark in on that team, oh my

24:28

God. Right. Yeah. That

24:31

and then, then look out there. There are a

24:33

time I think they're one team or one guy

24:35

short of being a title contender right now. People

24:37

say Julius Randall, not necessarily Randall,

24:40

but like you've a marketing on that team. Sure. But

24:43

I love watching that team play. There's

24:45

so like, it's just death by offensive

24:47

rebounds. They just crush you on

24:50

the offensive, which is fun to watch when it's not

24:52

your team that's getting crushed on the offensive glass. But

24:57

yeah, I don't, I

25:00

know that Brunson got, gets away with putting guys on his

25:02

hip and then he does the stop

25:04

and go up thing. But

25:06

for a while there, Trey was like

25:08

mini hardened. Like he was really getting

25:10

bad about it. So, so

25:13

did he used to just, I mean,

25:16

he would get to the free throw. I got to pull the numbers and see,

25:18

but he used to just get to the free

25:20

throw line like crazy because of the

25:22

rule. And since they put a stop to it,

25:24

I do wonder how much did that actually take

25:26

away from his effectiveness? I mean,

25:28

yeah, he was, he was at one point 9.3 free

25:31

throw attempts per game. That's been cut by two

25:33

to just 7.5 this season. If

25:37

you're a basketball junkie, then you know,

27:55

27:57

shoot. Well, you're still talking 26 to 10. I

28:00

think I think honestly if anything the

28:03

fouling stuff the foul baiting really tainted

28:05

like his reputation I feel okay

28:09

in terms of not even his reputation

28:11

throughout war his perception The

28:13

perception of him as a player around the league

28:18

Yeah, yeah And

28:20

I think it's honestly for the same thing. We kind

28:22

of saw a hard in when hard and was really

28:24

bad with it We're like,

28:27

okay like people thought lesser of them to

28:29

assert as a player and

28:31

in like him as much but

28:34

I Still did people

28:36

are gonna take one bus days like shot selection,

28:38

which he does take bad shots Yes, but

28:41

it's like pure shot quality, which is a

28:43

stat like an advanced metric you can look

28:45

at. Yes Some

28:47

of the worst shot quality in the league.

28:49

It's like somebody efficiency stuff doesn't really bother

28:51

me The officially at the rim really bothers

28:54

me with Trey. Yes. It's another one the

28:56

bad things He wouldn't think he's not good

28:58

at but I still

29:00

think he's a really good player without some of

29:02

the the foul baiting so like the Hip

29:05

toss thing. I don't even what you would describe it as where

29:08

he gets on your hip D'Angelo

29:12

Russell does it too? Yeah. Yeah. I know like

29:14

the the put in joke He

29:17

said something in particular like he would try to like

29:19

draw the foul Oh, yeah, I come to it He

29:21

gets the guy on his hip and then he and

29:23

then he just stops and pulls up so the guy

29:25

runs into him And throws the throw the ball up

29:27

at the rim. Yeah, I mean that's We've

29:30

seen that and the NBA would try to put a

29:32

stop to the jumping backwards into people stuff and a

29:35

lot of that was Try he was doing a lot

29:37

of the jump backwards stuff jump sideways into people Get

29:40

into the paint run into a guy and fall

29:42

down because he's like 150 pounds and and

29:44

he would go flying That

29:47

kind of stuff I Do

29:49

wonder how much that you know, maybe impacted his game.

29:51

He's Again,

29:53

he's a very good player if he becomes a

29:56

Laker I think I'll become even more appreciative of

29:58

the the talent that he does does

30:00

have as a passer, um, as a shooter, all the

30:02

things that he can do on the ball. I

30:06

just wonder is like,

30:10

if you had a five guys

30:12

that are all similar

30:14

in stature, I don't mean physical stature.

30:16

I mean, I mean, in the league,

30:19

similar in stature, where would Trey young rank? How

30:22

much of it is Trey young

30:24

is the player who's available. He's

30:28

not Mr. Right. He's Mr. Right. Now, if

30:31

we want to go dating analogy

30:33

here, right. Trey young is the

30:35

guy who happens to be there versus

30:38

he's the right guy for the team.

30:40

I do wonder how much of that

30:42

dynamic is, is there in

30:45

this whole discussion. I

30:47

think part of it is that he's just the one available

30:49

right now. I think, I think that definitely does factor

30:52

in, um, now

30:54

in terms like the five guys, the similar stature, honestly,

30:56

I think it just depends on what five guys are

30:59

talking about, like you

31:02

are so like Donvain Mitchell, for example, I

31:05

again, for me, it depends on what we're

31:07

talking about actually for with Donovan. Like I

31:09

said, right now, give me Donovan for this

31:11

version of the Lakers later in the future,

31:13

I would rather have Trey. So,

31:15

um, I think it depends, but, um, there,

31:17

there's definitely an element of, yeah, it's just

31:20

the guy that's the most, the

31:22

easiest to gain while the, while

31:24

still being a star caliber player

31:27

that you can actually

31:29

get and try to make a run at next

31:31

season. So I think, I think that does definitely

31:33

play a part of it. Who are his peers?

31:35

Like the flawed stars, right? I think that's kind

31:37

of how we have to think of him because

31:39

like Luca, what Yaris,

31:43

Jokic, like

31:45

take, take whatever you want, whatever

31:48

you want. You can have it. Whatever

31:50

you want. You can, you can take it. If

31:53

you give us that guy, right? Nothing is off

31:55

limits, right? That's the kind of guy that

31:57

you just go all out, like every, Whatever it

31:59

is., That you want. You. Could

32:01

have. Gave. Betray.

32:04

Who are his? I've been hearing

32:06

the other guys that would be and in that

32:08

tear for him because he's not. That he's not

32:11

that oh My God. Everybody says you can have

32:13

anything you want in order to get. That's not

32:15

him. So. Yeah, Tray

32:17

obviously are. Tired. Maxi.

32:20

Same. Level player if. We

32:23

are all terrorism actually. Stars

32:27

I see. Ah, Dear

32:29

and Fox I think. very similar.

32:32

Run. Around a player. The. Or

32:35

box. Ah jeez

32:37

ha ha ha up her

32:39

I didn't. Ah,

32:42

let's see. Ah, you're not

32:44

motorists maxi and it doesn't

32:46

have to be guards. But.

32:48

Ah Gauss, I keep a guide for

32:50

Mellow Ball at a similar. Type

32:53

of player and then because we talked about

32:55

already and I I went back to for

32:57

abdominal. what has got a flat. I

33:01

would take tray over the

33:04

Millibar. I.

33:07

Would definitively take tray overlook.

33:10

Mellow. And. I would take

33:12

him over maxi. Aka. The.

33:14

Other two would have been what Fox and

33:16

ah the Mitchell were. There's like a contends

33:18

the I was on my guess. It

33:21

depends actually not the airports. I would probably.

33:23

Have. At. The top analyst

33:25

I think yeah yeah I think I would

33:28

do what it over. What?

33:30

A What about the bonus? I

33:33

would take trying. To. Oversee Bonus:

33:35

Just a we're gonna at a different position.

33:38

Yeah. Eyes are going to

33:40

have a position then. Ah,

33:45

Mikhail Bridges. Track.

33:48

Law again as a as actually several

33:50

thousand mortgage right a good health. Miquel.

33:53

Probably because I think Miquel

33:55

is the. unions

33:57

or adapted erica easy perfect

34:00

combination like right down the middle

34:02

of okay, he's that kind

34:04

of no You well that's disrespectful to

34:06

the coverages, but he's not quite a

34:08

star He's pretty

34:10

close to it because of what he provides

34:12

you long term the answer is still betray Because

34:16

the Kelbridge is a fee Davis as my

34:18

future Trey

34:21

young or Kyrie Kyrie

34:24

yeah, hi, right Trey

34:27

young or Bradley Beal Trey

34:31

Trey easy that's what No,

34:34

these are easy ones. It's gonna get harder. Okay

34:36

younger. Okay Booker David

34:38

Booker, right That's

34:41

all the trailer your KD just to round out

34:43

the sons 36 year old KD

34:47

Again currently Katie Right,

34:50

right Okay,

34:54

Trey younger SGA is too easy SGA

34:59

Trey young I feel like this

35:01

is also just gonna be too easy betray or hallee Hallee

35:05

is how about hallee hallee? Yeah, right you try

35:08

young or Carl Anthony towns Trey

35:11

young Trey

35:16

young Trey younger. I don't

35:18

know follow me your trailer Brown Jalen

35:24

Brown and I'll get pray

35:26

he do he continues to develop his left hand You

35:29

paid him through a million dollars. He better develop that

35:32

damn left hand. Yeah, he's working on

35:34

it He's working on I think I would just

35:36

lean into the the athleticism of I've ever I

35:38

hear I've got This

35:40

should not be as difficult, but I

35:43

love this player. I Feel

35:46

like I know before you say before I say I feel

35:48

like I'm going to very easily pick one or the other

35:50

And you're gonna go back and forth. I

35:52

think you're gonna easily pick Trey young and

35:54

I think you should But

35:57

this is the quintessential Do

36:00

you take the perfect role player

36:02

or? The

36:05

I think I never start with this. Okay, who do you think

36:07

it's gonna be? Wait,

36:11

is he a player in the Western Conference? We're

36:13

getting it's like a game here. Okay. Okay here

36:15

I just tell Michael Porter jr. No,

36:17

it's not like oh, that's okay. Okay. No,

36:20

this is Trey young or Jaden McDaniel's

36:25

Right, I love Jaden

36:27

McDaniel so that guy like exactly

36:30

It's Trey, but damn I

36:34

hate especially like if

36:36

you buy into a scoring upside. Oh

36:38

my god. I Love

36:41

Jaden McDaniel, but it's true. Like there's

36:43

a there's a non-zero chance that

36:45

four years from now We're looking back going. What

36:47

the hell were we thinking Jaden McDaniel's all day

36:50

every day? Oh, yeah, I'm gonna

36:52

look back at this at four years to like damn a

36:54

shot You should just you said it you said if you

36:56

buy into the scoring upside Oh

36:59

What is he what like six eight? Just

37:01

freaks defender. Oh my god had

37:03

the 25 point game two. I

37:05

think against Phoenix nine You

37:09

had them you the Lakers had them Six

37:14

nine Yeah

37:19

I can defend everybody man conversation

37:21

will come depressing very quickly But

37:26

I'm curious because I know this is gonna be a big

37:28

topic for the summer I know yeah, you know beyond just

37:30

the conceptual Should you go after

37:32

three stars? Should you go after death? I

37:35

think a lot of what informs that decision.

37:37

It's not just What

37:39

do you think about roster building? It's who are the actual names

37:41

involved? Yeah, who are we really

37:43

talking about and I think Trey young is the most likely

37:46

name that's gonna be out there if we talk Going big

37:48

three route Obviously if we go depth we

37:50

could talk more about that and I think that would probably involve

37:52

keeping a lot of the guys they haven't seen now and trying

37:55

to add a piece or two, but this

37:58

is This is going to be

38:00

a big topic. So I'm really curious, Lakers Nation, what

38:02

do you guys think? Like, where do you put Trae

38:05

Young in the mix? How do

38:07

you see him? And what would you be

38:09

willing to give up as opposed to get him? Let

38:11

us know in the comment section over on the YouTube

38:13

channel or on the podcast side, Apple Podcasts, give us

38:15

that rating and review. Put it in the review section.

38:17

I'm really curious to see how Lakers fans feel

38:20

right now. What would they be willing to

38:22

give for

38:24

Trae Young? Do you agree with me that I think

38:26

he's Mr. Right now and

38:28

not Mr. Right? Give me your

38:30

thoughts in the comment section. All

38:32

right, Sean, we do need to get into, before

38:35

we put the show into overtime here, we do

38:37

need to get into the mailbag a bit. Before

38:40

I get there, I want to make a quick announcement.

38:44

Every year when the season winds down,

38:46

we do still have our live shows.

38:48

Now we haven't had a live show,

38:50

aside from the quick mobile shorts that

38:52

I've done, which live on the YouTube

38:54

channel as well. Those are a lot of fun. I'll continue

38:56

doing those, but we haven't had a

38:58

live show since the Lakers last game. So

39:01

starting up next week, we're going

39:03

to start our live off-season schedule,

39:05

which means, and this may

39:07

be adjusted as crazy things happen during

39:10

this. I'm expecting a very busy summer,

39:12

but minimum, we're going to go

39:14

live on Mondays, Wednesdays,

39:16

and Fridays. So that will be

39:18

the schedule moving forward Mondays.

39:21

And we will have some prerecorded shows

39:23

in between there and everything, of course.

39:25

But Mondays and Wednesdays, we're

39:27

going to go live at 11 o'clock

39:30

Eastern time, 8 o'clock Pacific time. You can come

39:32

talk with us. We'll take your questions, your comments,

39:34

all of that. Fridays,

39:36

we'll do like a

39:38

mid-afternoon live, probably be

39:40

like a two o'clock

39:42

Pacific time live. Fridays, we'll kick

39:45

off the weekend with a little

39:47

fun Friday. Speaking of which,

39:49

tomorrow, noon Pacific

39:52

time, I'm going to go live,

39:54

Sean. I don't know if you're around or not, but we're

39:56

going to have our members only live show. Actually,

39:58

when I say tomorrow, we're recording. this Thursday night. Today,

40:01

for those of you listening this and watching this

40:03

on Friday, noon Pacific time,

40:05

we're going to have our members only live. And

40:08

our channel members, if you guys are on YouTube,

40:10

you click the join button, you can check out

40:12

what our channel membership is all about, get to

40:14

come join in, come on stage, we'll talk Lakers

40:16

basketball, talk the Lake latest news, maybe we'll be

40:18

talking about Darvin him getting let go, we'll see,

40:21

depends on what happens. But that's going

40:23

to be happening noon Pacific time, Friday,

40:26

hopefully you guys can come hang out with us for

40:28

that as well. I

40:30

think I covered everything. I know you and I talked about is there

40:32

anything I forgot there? No,

40:37

super excited about the offseason schedule we got coming

40:39

for you guys super excited about next season

40:41

already already brainstormed we actually came

40:43

up with a really cool idea off camera

40:47

the last pod that I was on with

40:49

Trevor that we're super excited about. So yeah,

40:51

great is never a better time, honestly, to

40:53

subscribe to the channel and turn on those

40:55

post notification bell stuff like that. So you

40:58

don't miss a video. Then right now, like

41:00

Trevor says, can be very busy offseason. You

41:02

know, you got the LeBron contract extension or

41:04

you know, contract situation is a whole new

41:07

coach that we got to figure out what Lakers

41:09

do in the draft, free and see

41:11

obviously summer league. So it's gonna be a bunch of fun stuff

41:13

to break down here on the channel heading into the summer. All

41:17

right. Well, let's dive into the

41:21

mail bag here. Here

41:23

we go. The need to, if I said

41:25

Reeves 34 minutes and elimination game,

41:27

why, why, why ham needs to go just

41:30

hurts. You know, like Sean,

41:33

I keep saying it. The Lakers did had one

41:35

of three things happen. Well,

41:37

just one, they win game pack. That

41:40

was give Reeves five, take five minutes away from Dan.

41:42

What he gives five minutes to Reeves, they

41:44

wouldn't get five. Don't

41:47

miss nine free throws. I

41:49

obviously have mass. You

41:51

win game five and then AD doesn't get

41:53

the stinger in his shoulder, which basically eliminated

41:56

him on the offensive end of the floor.

41:59

They wouldn't get five. Yeah, the

42:02

Austin 34 minutes thing is incredibly

42:04

annoying, especially if you've seen the

42:06

video from game five where

42:09

Austin's on the bench. I think this is the

42:11

possession that ends up in like a shot clock

42:13

violation or something along those lines. And

42:15

Austin looks down at the end of the bench and

42:17

is like, yo, are we gonna get

42:20

me back in the game or what are we

42:22

doing here? Do I have to put myself back

42:25

in? So I don't know. Really, really, really frustrating.

42:28

And yeah, I expect the Darwin news

42:30

to drop any minute now, literally. Chris

42:34

said, I don't care if he's hurt, he's out there. AD

42:36

took one shot in the second. That's a losing formula. Rui

42:40

sold on the last play and on defense all

42:42

game. And that's part of why we talked about

42:44

maybe moving him off and putting it on my

42:46

Torian print. He's not great off ball, but Torian

42:49

was probably better than Rui off ball.

42:53

So let's, on

42:57

this, the whole AD only took one shot thing.

43:01

From my advantage, when he had trouble raising

43:03

his arm, I don't know

43:05

if I can fault AD too much. Like

43:07

he was grabbing rebounds one handed and stuff. Like I can't fault

43:09

him too much. It would be...

43:12

Go ahead. What? No,

43:15

I was just gonna say when he can't raise his arm. I

43:17

mean, yeah, like there'll be like possessions where

43:20

the ball is the easiest rebound is going

43:23

to like the arm that's

43:25

injured. And AD would just

43:27

reach all the way across his body

43:30

almost to grab the

43:32

rebound because with the opposite hand, the non

43:34

injured arm, because he doesn't want

43:36

to lift the injured arm or the injured shoulder.

43:39

So yeah, man, the AD injury sucks and

43:41

kind of go back to Trevor's last point.

43:44

AD does the game. I mean, that did swing

43:46

the momentum of the game. And it's unfortunate, especially

43:48

for a guy that's been so durable this season.

43:51

Yeah, for sure. Mark

43:54

Spector's abcars. So there's a video of him ignoring

43:56

Reeves begging to go back into the game. God,

43:58

that was so bad. Yeah,

44:01

that's so bad. All right. Anyway,

44:05

Andrew, so can we talk

44:08

about Ruiz autorocious defense or

44:10

atrocious defense one on MPJ

44:12

open three and then no help on

44:15

the deal side

44:17

with Murray? Yeah, I mean the final

44:19

shot you saw Torian trying to push

44:21

Ruiz to go and defend

44:24

Murray. I

44:27

was just it was it was right.

44:29

And you know what? Ruiz has been good on the season, I

44:31

think. Ruiz was good on the season,

44:33

but acting as an off-ball

44:35

chaser, which is what he has to do against

44:37

Denver, it's not an ideal

44:39

situation for him to be in. Yeah.

44:43

And that last play, we talked

44:46

about this last play a lot in the last pod I was on,

44:49

where it's kind of the irony of

44:51

the Laker season this last game, where,

44:53

you know, we've been asking

44:55

Darwin to use timeouts all season. The game

44:57

you actually need timeouts. He uses them all.

45:00

And we have been saying stop over helping.

45:02

It's been a one, the narratives on the

45:05

season. Lakers are over helping too much defensively

45:07

and not over helping kind of might

45:10

have. Who knows? Maybe Jamal also

45:12

hits the shot, but not over helping my

45:14

costs in the season. So again,

45:16

the irony there. This

45:19

one, we'll do one more here. Bader

45:23

3000 said at one point, Ham had no bigs

45:25

when AD was hurt. Give

45:27

us wood or something. That's

45:29

just that, Sean. Wouldn't that be

45:31

break glass in case of emergency? Like

45:34

literally the definition of it. AD

45:36

goes down. And I think our

45:39

front court was Tori and Brani and

45:41

Rui, if I recall correctly. Yeah,

45:43

I think so. I just thought about that.

45:48

Yeah. This makes it all the more critical that

45:50

whatever you do, whatever build you want to go

45:52

for, three star depth, whatever you

45:54

do not leave this summer

45:57

without a true physical big.

46:00

Mike, like someone as big

46:02

or bigger than Anthony Davis

46:05

that you can put out there on the floor that

46:08

can do big man things.

46:11

That's it. You have to. And

46:13

I'm assuming when Trevor says big, we

46:15

are talking like size, not height. Because

46:17

you have height in Jack today. Trevor's

46:19

talking size and build

46:21

and physicality. So

46:24

yeah, because we're begging for Christian

46:26

Wood to play. So that, yeah.

46:29

And Christian Wood is not bigger than Anthony Davis. I'm

46:32

talking about somebody that you're going to be comfortable going

46:34

out there, getting you rebounds, defending Jokic for 10 minutes

46:36

or so, and not just getting moved out of the

46:38

way like Jackson Hayes does.

46:40

Speaking of which, what do you think

46:42

happens? Just to close out the show

46:45

here, what happens with Jackson Hayes, Christian

46:47

Wood and Cam Reddish? All

46:49

three have player options, all three on minimum

46:51

contracts. They would get a slight raise off

46:54

of a minimum contract. What do those three

46:56

guys do? I

46:58

think Christian Wood's back. I think Christian Wood

47:00

opts in. I think Cam

47:03

Reddish opts in. What does

47:05

his cam still opt in? I

47:08

was about to say, unless it's like

47:10

another weird opportunity where like Cam can really

47:12

play, but you're still talking about men. Jackson

47:16

Hayes is the one out of the three that

47:18

I think is most likely to opt

47:21

out. Again, unless there's a weird situation

47:23

where a spot, a team's like, all

47:25

right, Cam here. We'll give you some minutes. Another

47:27

opportunity, et cetera. But I feel like Cam's had

47:30

too many of those throughout the league to

47:32

where honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if

47:34

Cam just stayed one more year.

47:36

So I don't know. Most

47:38

likely to leave would be Jackson Hayes

47:40

for me. Most likely to stay for me would be

47:42

Christian Wood. How about you? I

47:46

think that the

47:48

guy most likely to pick it up is Cam

47:52

to pick up his player. Like if Christian Wood doesn't

47:56

pick up his player option, I think there's another

47:58

minimum contract out there for him. somewhere. So

48:02

I don't know if there's another minimum contract out there for

48:04

Cam Reddish or not. And I don't know what the market

48:06

will look like. It's not impossible for there to be a

48:09

contract out there for him. But

48:12

I would say who has the most risk that

48:15

that's that's just it. If they don't pick up the

48:17

option like they don't have another team that's going to

48:20

give them the minimum, it's probably Cam because

48:22

some team will. So Christian Wood is still average

48:24

15 points or 18 points, whatever

48:27

he averaged in the NBA at one point. Yeah,

48:29

somewhat recently. So I think

48:31

a team would still take a flyer on that

48:33

on a minimum. Sure. Cam,

48:36

I think is the biggest risk if he doesn't pick

48:38

it up, pick up that. So I

48:40

kind of think he does. But then I wonder,

48:42

like if Darwin's not there. Does he still pick

48:44

up that option? That's going to be interesting to watch. And

48:46

I don't have a problem with any of the three of

48:48

them picking up because they're

48:50

minimums, right? Like whatever, you

48:53

know, it doesn't if they pick it

48:55

up fine if they don't. Fine. Like it's it

48:57

is what it is like. Which one of the

48:59

three would you do you most want to keep?

49:04

Which one of the three do I most want to keep?

49:06

I kind of want to keep Christian Wood the most. Yeah.

49:11

I think if they're all playing at their best,

49:13

Christian would be the best player. So I

49:15

agree with that. I agree with that. I

49:18

think Christian would have had a very

49:20

down year and he didn't really

49:22

get what it really is. Yeah,

49:24

that's it. Laker curse. All

49:27
