Today we have a very special story indeed, from the New World, as it was once called! When this story was first published in 1819, America was still a country that was being explored by pilgrims from Europe, then called the Old World, and therefore America seemed very new to them. Indeed, the main character in this story, Rip Van Winkle, is of Dutch descent, and that is why his name may sound unusual to us! When Rip falls to sleep in the story, it is just before the time of the American Revolution, and so when he wakes up the world seems much, much changed to him! There are very similar stories to be found in Irish literature, and they usually concern people who encounter fairies and are then offered a magical drink or potion. Often they awake many months or even years later, the unsuspecting victims of fairy magic! So beware the fairy folk and their delicious magical drinks, or you just might wake up like poor Rip van Winkle!
