This is Latino Usa, the Radio Journal of

0:43

News and could do that. Lucky you know

0:45

you are seen as long as they let

0:47

you know us. I muddy a horse and

0:49

we bring you stories that are underreported, but

0:51

that mattered to Uni. Overlooked by the Western

0:54

media. In a while, the country is struggling to

0:56

deal with these muslims. Are the stories

0:58

of black and Latino still

1:00

united? Ladino Front: A cultural

1:02

renaissance, organizing. At the forefront of

1:04

the movement. I might yet. you

1:07

know Hossa not a by young. For

1:12

many women in the United States, The

1:15

Fall of Rome v Wade has

1:17

been going back to the time

1:19

when abortion was not legal in

1:22

this country. Only know things have

1:24

definitely changed. Almost two years after

1:26

the Dobbs decision, there's an increasing

1:29

of policing of women and of

1:31

pregnancies. In general. And

1:34

Brittany wants knows. What

1:36

that's like in the flesh just

1:38

makes me angry. that somebody would

1:40

make me seem so callous and

1:42

so. So.

1:44

Hateful. Britney

1:46

Wants is a thirty four year old

1:49

black woman living in Ohio. This

1:51

january, a grand jury in Ohio

1:53

declined to indict her after she

1:55

was arrested and charged with the

1:57

quote unquote abuse of a corpse.

2:00

After. She suffered a miscarriage.

2:03

This is Britney speaking about the

2:06

moment when she went to seek

2:08

care right after she lost the

2:10

pregnancy. The.

2:12

Nurse comes in. And

2:14

she's rub my back in

2:16

talking to me in San.

2:19

Everything's gonna be okay. Little.

2:21

Do I know the nurse that was

2:23

comforting me? And. Saying that everything

2:25

was gonna be okay. Was

2:27

the one who called the police. Had

2:29

a matter who had a delivery at home

2:32

and came out the beatings and or need

2:34

to happen and one it sold for is

2:36

A or know what I need to go

2:38

to say it again he was alive or

2:40

not. She said she didn't want to look,

2:42

she didn't want the baby and she didn't

2:44

look. The

2:47

war in city police proceeded

2:49

to then go to Britney

2:51

was home. He took her

2:53

toilet apart, They retrieved the

2:55

fetus and used it for

2:57

forensic evidence. The story. Is

2:59

is catalyst for the anti. It's bone

3:02

to lean. But. Perhaps.

3:05

It's not that surprising. Pregnancy.

3:07

Criminalization has been accelerating.

3:10

And we released a report last

3:12

September. That shows. That.

3:15

Pregnancy criminalization is happening

3:17

in most states to

3:19

various degrees. This is

3:21

new to this see where that she is

3:23

president of Pregnancy just as. A

3:26

national organization dedicated to defending the

3:28

rights of people who. Are pregnant.

3:30

Between. Two thousand and Six and

3:32

the Dogs decision in two thousand

3:34

and twenty two we found close.

3:37

To fourteen hundred cases.

3:39

Of pregnancy criminalization and we know this is

3:41

an undercount. The majority of the

3:43

cases in our data are related to

3:45

people who are accused of using drugs

3:47

during pregnancy. Which. Using drugs

3:49

as itself is not a crime

3:51

is possession is declining right? but

3:54

because the person is pregnant. Prosecutors.

3:57

Have been very creative an

3:59

interpreter. Lars to apply to

4:01

people who are pregnant, but

4:03

we're seeing all kinds of fat

4:06

patterns including falling down the stairs,

4:08

taking a prescribed medication from

4:10

your doctor, getting into a car

4:12

accident while not wearing a

4:14

seatbelt, And. Then of course

4:17

having a miscarriage are still birth. And

4:19

being accused of causing this outcome

4:21

will We know there are many

4:23

biological and health reasons that cause

4:26

this outcome. but if we can't

4:28

guarantee. A perfect pregnancy. We.

4:30

Are at risk of being

4:32

surveilled and reported to law

4:34

enforcement. Prostitute

4:40

or Media and pure. x. Is left

4:42

you know Usa I muddying the horses

4:44

today. We continue our special. Election coverage

4:46

for twenty twenty fourth, The lovely

4:48

not factor a result. Were gonna

4:51

be talking about one of the

4:53

top mobilizing issues for Latino and

4:55

Latino voters. abortion and reproductive rate.

5:02

Since. The Supreme Court eliminated

5:05

the constitutional right to an

5:07

abortion. Voters across the country

5:09

have overwhelmingly shown up in

5:11

support of abortion rights. Michigan

5:13

is now the first date and in a

5:15

sense to guarantee the right so an of

5:18

horses. In

5:22

Ohio. The right to abortion

5:24

is now officially part of California

5:26

State constitution. And Latina and

5:29

let you know, like the next, Lettie Mae.

5:31

Voters are no exception. Currently.

5:34

Not been as represent the largest

5:36

group of women of color impacted

5:38

by state abortion bans. And

5:40

the community is sensitive to the. Issue:

5:43

When researchers as letting us

5:45

and letting us why abortion

5:47

policy was important to them,

5:49

they responded that banning abortions

5:51

puts women's lives at risk.

5:58

This election. Thirty six

6:00

million people in the Latino. Community are

6:03

eligible. To vote That makes

6:05

let. The. Knows the second largest

6:07

voting cohort, which accounts for

6:10

almost fifteen percent of all

6:12

voters, which means they cannot

6:14

be ignored. As President,

6:17

Biden has. Admitted. We can

6:19

do well in America if a

6:21

Latino community doesn't do well. Historically,

6:24

the Democratic party is at an advantage

6:26

with Latino voters. Why don't you know

6:28

what they're for? Melissa? What? They're for

6:30

our voice. Center Obama You believe Athena

6:32

voters will not go for black eldest

6:35

son? Illinois mail voted for me. Still,

6:38

former President Trump has

6:40

his own edge among

6:42

Latino voters, specifically. Men:

6:47

So this election the stakes. Are

6:50

high on so

6:52

many intersecting because.

6:54

Study after study shows that when

6:56

abortion access is taken away from

6:59

people, it's women of color. Who

7:01

suffer the most and. All over

7:03

the country from Colorado to Florida

7:05

the seen Us are coming up

7:07

with forms of resistance. And are

7:09

fighting. So in this episode gonna talk with

7:12

Lord of the Zebra who you heard of

7:14

the top of the show. and with

7:16

two other less been us. We're working

7:18

on the ground and we're

7:20

gonna talk about the state

7:23

of reproductive rights post row

7:25

since how those consequences are

7:27

impacting how we felt so

7:29

knew. This was done when I

7:31

thought of as. And. Welcome

7:33

the A Minivan Stephanie. Lorraine Be

7:35

Nero Executive director of the

7:38

Florida Access Network, the only

7:40

Queer and Bites hot lead

7:42

statewide abortion funding organization in

7:45

this state of Florida. Stephanie

7:47

high and low and finally

7:49

we're joined by America Me

7:52

This she's program manager at

7:54

for Lot which stands for

7:56

Colorado Organization for let you

7:59

know Opportunity. Reproductive Rights. It's

8:01

a community rooted organization that make

8:03

sure that letting us and letting

8:06

us can lead safe, healthy, and

8:08

self determined. Lies when as a

8:10

medi gun when us vs database

8:12

depending on where we're at. So.

8:15

Welcome all of you to let Me usa

8:18

but before we jump into the conversation I

8:20

just want to go around the room as

8:22

it were to get us temperature check on

8:24

all of you because the three of you

8:27

are literally on the front lines of the

8:29

issue of reproductive justice. So.

8:32

Quickly, What's your temperature checked like? how

8:34

are you feeling And we're going to start

8:36

with you America! Ah,

8:38

that's a tough question, I think. For

8:41

a lot of Reaper workers were

8:43

just. With. Animals can say get

8:45

a killer tie, right? Like we're still trucking

8:47

along, but while up in us so we're

8:49

still doing the best that we can. even

8:52

in the spaces like Colorado where we know

8:54

that there's at least some sort of protections.

8:57

We still have a ways to go. Lose.

8:59

This: what's your temperature check? Here.

9:01

This is a really tough time in

9:03

our movement, but I have to say

9:06

that when I'm feeling discouraged a channel

9:08

my away like that, miss her family

9:10

birth and a sugar plantation and point

9:12

that he goes. She

9:18

had fourteen said Nancy she

9:20

gave. Birth to send children and then of

9:23

whom grew up into adulthood. So I do

9:25

this work in her name. I.

9:27

Do this work in the name of

9:29

the party. Rican women of my mother's

9:31

generation and so many others who were

9:33

sterilized without informed consent and who were

9:36

robbed of their bodily autonomy and agency.

9:38

And. I do this work. For. The community

9:41

is like that for service in

9:43

Brooklyn where I grew up where

9:45

in the name of War on

9:47

drugs they were cruelly impacted by

9:50

policies are prioritized criminalization over policies

9:52

that meant to address discrimination and

9:54

so. I can't afford to

9:56

be discouraged and I feel inspiration

9:58

by my and. Years and my

10:01

community. Stephanie. What's your

10:03

temperature checked? Were feeling focused

10:05

and hopeful about what our

10:07

future looks like because we

10:09

firmly believe that. Our future

10:11

is an hour hims and not

10:13

in the hands of the state

10:16

or politicians who are more interested

10:18

in using abortion as an issue

10:20

of political fodder then protecting the

10:22

rights for us to live a

10:24

future with bodily autonomy. So.

10:27

It appears that there has been a major. Shift in letting

10:29

or letting up public opinion about the

10:31

issue of abortion. As recently as the

10:34

year, Twenty Twenty studies showed that only

10:36

five percent of Latino voters said that

10:38

abortion was one of their top issues,

10:41

but. When. The Fall of

10:43

Roby Way to happen. Those numbers significantly

10:45

change to they abortion is one of

10:47

the top ten concerns for letting one

10:50

Latino voters. stephanie you work in the

10:52

state of Florida are many. Guy you're

10:54

in Colorado. Both of them with a

10:57

significant Latino population is. Let's start with

10:59

you in Florida. However, reproductive rights

11:01

and abortion access changed since the fall

11:04

of Rosie weighed. The. Florida

11:06

abortion landscape has

11:08

changed. Most. Drastically

11:10

and significantly than it

11:13

has in. Over twenty five years

11:15

as a a judge or old. Women looking

11:17

to get an abortion is less y

11:19

twenty four hours after an initial doctor

11:21

says it before getting the procedure. Gov.

11:23

Rhonda Santa signing a bill into

11:26

law Thursday that bans most abortions

11:28

after fifteen weeks. Florida lawmakers have

11:30

given final approval to a six week

11:32

abortion bans, paving the way for a

11:35

tighter grip on abortion access in the

11:37

state. So. While

11:40

Florida was viewed

11:42

as a quote

11:44

abortion see. Then for

11:46

many states in the South that

11:49

had even less access now people

11:51

are forced to leave the stay

11:53

at we are now. Bleeding on

11:56

pins and needles every week to

11:58

hear what the. The Supreme

12:00

Court of Florida has to

12:02

say about our rights continue

12:04

to access abortions. Her. I.

12:07

Made a guy year in Colorado.

12:09

He was for a long time

12:11

considered to be a swing state,

12:13

but since Two thousand and Eight,

12:15

it has been pretty much a

12:17

democratic and liberal stronghold. And that

12:19

coupled with last year's laws expanding

12:21

abortion access in Colorado, abortions. Appear

12:24

to be politically safe in Colorado. Amity

12:26

Guy, you are on the ground. so

12:28

can you just tell us what that

12:30

looks like in your state. Yes,

12:32

So even though there's a lot

12:34

of. Talk that Colorado is

12:37

very progressive and although we have

12:39

very few restrictions on abortion, we

12:41

knew that Roe V Wade was

12:43

not enough for our communities and

12:45

when Real was overturned, we didn't

12:47

have a state law that would

12:49

expressly protect abortion And so that

12:51

was when we are in the

12:53

Reproductive Health Equity Act in Two

12:55

Thousand Twenty Two right before the

12:58

Dogs decision and since then what

13:00

we've seen as that abortion and

13:02

abortion care and health care has.

13:04

Been. A tough issue for our

13:06

communities and we've seen as huge

13:09

increase in curiosity and wanting to

13:11

learn and engage in reproductive justice.

13:14

Also, we seen a lot of

13:16

influx of p since coming to

13:19

Colorado. Although color is not a

13:21

direct service organization, we work a

13:23

lot with organizations that have either

13:26

abortion fines or clinics or providers,

13:28

and they talk a lot about

13:30

how there's a strain right now

13:33

on their systems to be able

13:35

to provide services not just for

13:37

Coloradans, but for folks that are

13:40

traveling to Colorado from other states

13:42

to access services. So

13:44

we talked about criminalization at the top

13:47

of the episode in the case of

13:49

Britney Watts, Ohio and I just really

13:51

want to give a medi gun Stephanie

13:54

the opportunity to jump in here and

13:56

to give their perspective on this issue.

13:58

So American. The go a

14:00

little bit further about the criminalization. I mean.

14:03

To. Also, think about folks that

14:05

are undocumented or young people who

14:08

are already in those margins. We

14:10

did a lot of concern of

14:12

even wanting to. Get routine

14:14

procedures done, A Routine Care.

14:17

Because of things like being criminalized, we

14:19

talk to young people who are in

14:21

high school that don't want to go

14:24

do states. That don't protect abortion.

14:26

For college penalty Don't know what

14:29

will happen when stay there and

14:31

that's. Not. Something that I considered

14:33

when I was thinking about college. and

14:35

so it's really concerning for us to

14:37

know that there's so many other things

14:39

that people are thinking about having to

14:41

think about when it comes to the

14:43

type of criminalization. Of. I used as

14:45

funny. As. In a way

14:47

that we're seeing, this happened

14:50

in Florida is this past

14:52

year a law was passed

14:54

that requires hospitals asked on

14:57

their admission forms whether a

14:59

piece. It. Is lawfully

15:01

press in the Us and

15:03

he what we're seeing is

15:05

now. People who are

15:07

immigrants who may be undocumented

15:09

are not getting the health

15:12

care that they. Need We're

15:14

seeing increased police presence in

15:16

front of abortion. Clinics we're

15:19

seeing increased presence in

15:21

surveillance and. They. Are

15:24

scared. They're not only scared

15:26

about what is happening there

15:28

also confused and rightfully so

15:30

are worried that what they

15:32

are doing is wrong and

15:34

we obviously stand on the

15:36

fact that getting an abortion,

15:38

wanting an abortion meeting. An

15:40

abortion? There is absolutely no shame

15:43

and nothing wrong with getting. That

15:45

however, because of the way these laws

15:47

are being described and how they are

15:50

being executed, people are worried that what

15:52

they're doing is illegal. That getting an

15:54

abortion. Is a crime and that is

15:57

also stoking fear in people And that's

15:59

bad. Nine to discourage

16:01

people from accessing their

16:03

bodily autonomy. And. This

16:05

is no. Do this and I can just add one

16:07

other point. The. Overturning of row

16:10

and the rolling back of abortion

16:12

rights. This is part of a

16:14

larger agenda to dismantle the games.

16:16

I have been made by the

16:18

Women's rights movement, the Civil Rights.

16:21

Lgbtq rights and Workers' Rights

16:23

movement. This is no simple

16:26

the same. It really is

16:28

revolution. Me

16:32

live. In

16:40

a hurry. Democrat or republican

16:43

during the work is T V

16:45

Board or ones that make these

16:47

corporations goes got other way around

16:49

demanding. That the Federal government says

16:52

something that we the course now

16:54

waiting for November is not enough.

16:59

Summing. Up on that you're Usa

17:01

Sport abortion allies and as the

17:04

kids can learn from the green

17:06

ways in let America and will

17:08

young voters sought to the polls

17:10

come November. Stay with us. Not

17:12

to my yes. A

17:56

We're back before the break New

17:58

Jersey where I'm Stephanie. Rain be

18:00

need on an American Hamid as

18:02

gave us a snapshot of what

18:05

the two years since the Fall

18:07

of Rome have been like. Thera

18:09

going to expand on the new

18:11

possibilities post row when we take

18:13

this same out of the person

18:15

so. Let's get back to the conversation.

18:19

Stephanie. You actually call yourself

18:21

an abortion storyteller? I'm sure that

18:23

some people are saying way with

18:25

what, what what? So what is

18:27

an abortion storyteller And why is

18:30

it important in the context of

18:32

the politics of today? So.

18:34

In a bush than storyteller. To

18:36

me he is someone who. Is

18:39

reclaiming the narrative about abortion

18:41

and telling their story on

18:43

their own terms. For me,

18:45

I've had two portions, one

18:47

of them from as sexually

18:49

assaulted. Another because of needing

18:51

and both happen as a

18:53

minor and bolus even to

18:55

die I would still not

18:57

be able to access because

18:59

in Florida you mean parental

19:01

involvement. To access it, abortion is

19:04

not. You have to go through a

19:06

judicial intervention called a judicial bypass and

19:08

get permission from a judge. So for

19:10

me, it's really. Important to uplift my

19:12

abortion story. And a plus the

19:14

fact that my abortion was my

19:16

decision. And. These barriers

19:19

are very real because they are not

19:21

just geographic, their economic, they are Brazil,

19:23

just they are. So there's so many

19:26

different barriers people are needing to face

19:28

and accessing an abortion. and it is

19:30

important that people share the complexities of

19:33

life That for some people, getting an

19:35

abortion is as simple as I want

19:37

an abortion. I'm gonna go get when.

19:40

And for other folks they need. To

19:42

a parasite all these back

19:44

right as to access their

19:46

bodily autonomy and we deserve

19:48

to hear all of those

19:50

experiences because we're tired of

19:52

having our stories and are

19:54

narratives stolen from us and

19:56

used to push political agendas

19:58

that are and. Horde of about

20:00

abortion. Care and not just by

20:02

the opposition, but by our allies

20:05

to. And that's what's most important

20:07

about abortion. Storytelling is be stigmatizing.

20:09

Abortions, the stigmatizing or narratives

20:11

and reclaiming what it means

20:14

to access bodily autonomy on

20:16

our own terms. Even.

20:19

Though I haven't seventy call myself

20:21

an abortion storyteller, I have talked

20:23

about the fact that when I

20:25

was in college I had to

20:27

abortions and. At this point

20:29

I, I mean I don't have any

20:31

shame. I'm thankful. So I was able

20:33

to have those abortions. That's. Why I

20:35

talk publicly about it? But I wanna

20:38

ask you Stephanie because. On the

20:40

one, and storytelling is all about making

20:42

this public right. But on the other

20:44

hand, The. Central issue

20:46

around Roe V Wade. I'm not

20:48

a legal scholars but I believe is

20:51

about the right to privacy. And.

20:53

Yet in your case, Stephanie,

20:55

you had to go before

20:57

a judge to get this

20:59

judicial bypass so public. And

21:01

that was what allowed you

21:03

to actually. Be. Able to

21:05

get access to an abortion so

21:07

for you word as privacy enter

21:10

into the conversation. I am

21:12

also not a legal scholar. But that

21:14

is where I feel that are. Abortion

21:16

Rights and legal. Scholars.

21:19

Have more to grow and absolutely we

21:21

all deserve a right to privacy about

21:23

the decisions that we make. A. Run

21:25

our health care and around our

21:28

bodies but we continue to have.

21:30

These repetitive, circular conversations about

21:32

privacy and whether who deserves

21:34

that and who's more deserving

21:36

of it When we need

21:38

to refrain. Abortion As an

21:40

issue of human rights, Abortion

21:42

as an issue of. Self

21:44

determination that we all deserve about

21:46

our future. Because when we normalize.

21:49

Abortion. but we able to have

21:51

bipartisan conversations and that is why

21:53

it when I talked to my

21:55

A Will Lead that's my loved

21:57

ones who may have heard. Of

22:00

abortion in the political sense, in the

22:02

way that it's been politicized Of them,

22:05

We have conversations one on one about

22:07

what would you do. Would.

22:09

You still support me Undies still loved me.

22:11

He. Still, Loved me my will either still loves

22:13

me, the people who loved me and my life

22:15

to love me and that is what's important to

22:18

continue to lift up. And that's why we continue

22:20

to tell our stories and talk to each other.

22:22

Because it's not just about telling the public in

22:24

general. Have to tell the public. You don't have

22:26

to come on a podcast. You don't have to

22:28

do this thing. For your story

22:30

to be valid. Sharing with yourself. Sharing

22:32

with your God. Sharing with the people

22:35

who you love To remind them because

22:37

everyone loves someone with had an abortion

22:39

and we know it or not. For.

22:42

Me when I and that of having to

22:44

tell my mom and my dad about the

22:46

abortions in I was so scared and the

22:48

reaction from my Mexican parents my mom was

22:51

like I mean he thought I would have

22:53

wanted to be there with you. You.

22:55

Should have told me I would have held your hand. One

22:58

less thing I just wanna add because

23:00

he brought up your mom and I

23:02

just think that So Beautiful! When I

23:04

needed an abortion when I was sixteen,

23:06

my mom was not supportive and that

23:08

was unfortunate because my mom was my

23:11

biggest ally. In. So many other

23:13

ways. And now sixteen years

23:15

later, my mom. Is one

23:17

of our most active volunteers and

23:19

my abortion fun while driving people

23:21

to and from there appointment and

23:23

making them feel affirmed and loved

23:25

on because a lot of people

23:27

are going through their abortion by

23:29

themselves because of that social stigma

23:31

and I want to make sure

23:33

that I say that because people.

23:35

Need to hear that people can

23:37

be transformed and love is what

23:40

transforms as movie trailer abortion. There's.

23:49

So. I met guys about the question

23:51

of again, things evolving, what has changed.

23:53

I think a lot about terminology when

23:56

I was growing up when we got

23:58

to the term reproductive rights a. The

24:00

big deal to talk about

24:02

reproductive rights. the term know

24:04

that you use to describe

24:07

your work is the framework

24:09

of reproductive justice. So why

24:11

do you think it's essential

24:13

to understand reproductive justice in

24:15

the context of this particular

24:17

political moment? If

24:19

we look at reproductive rights that

24:21

still legal protections that protect the

24:23

right to reproductive health care services

24:26

which are is usually. Focus on

24:28

abortion and. Contraception. Reproductive Justice is

24:30

based on a human rights framework, saying

24:32

that it doesn't matter where you are,

24:34

who you are, what you look like,

24:37

where you're from, how much you make

24:39

you deserve these rights because you are

24:41

a person. So the Tenants of

24:44

Reproductive Justice as it was coined in

24:46

June of Nineteen Ninety Four or One

24:48

to be able to decide when and

24:51

if you will have a child and

24:53

the conditions under which ill defined in

24:55

expand that family that includes the your

24:57

fertility adoption and you're breathing options The

25:00

second is to decide to not have

25:02

children and and access to preventing or

25:04

ending up pregnancy in a safe and

25:07

dignified manner. The third Tenant of Reproductive

25:09

Justice as a human rights to care

25:11

for your families. In Safe Environments

25:13

and healthy and sustainable communities. And

25:16

we've also been able to add

25:18

an intentional wording around a person

25:20

having the human rights to be

25:23

able to express their gender identity.

25:25

Their expression in their sexual orientation

25:27

freely. This is really,

25:29

really employer and in the Reproductive

25:32

justice comes as a body

25:34

of work from twelve Black women.

25:36

It is rooted in Black liberation

25:39

and ensuring that people have the

25:41

ability and the accessibility to

25:43

be able to make the best

25:45

decisions for themselves. And

25:47

what America described is really the true

25:50

right to life. And you have to

25:52

stop giving the abortion opponents of Free

25:54

pass to claim the mantle of life

25:56

when their focus on seat all rights

25:58

is causing harm. The the health and

26:01

lives of people were pregnant and ripping

26:03

families apart. When maternal and infant mortality

26:05

is on the rise in this country,

26:07

it's the highest. Among. All

26:10

industrialized nations and the highest among

26:12

states with abortion bans. There is

26:14

an increasing trend of suicide, an

26:16

overdose among pregnant people. So.

26:19

We have to stop giving them

26:21

a free pass. What America described

26:23

as reproductive justice that is right

26:25

to life and right to health.

26:27

And. That is why we stand for. One

26:30

of the things that has. Come out of

26:33

this particular moment in the United

26:35

States is this interesting turn towards

26:37

Latin America. And in

26:39

Latin America you have this movement. It's

26:42

called the feminist green Wave. And

26:44

they've had major. Reproductive justice

26:47

wins in countries like Mexico.

26:49

And Argentina by

26:52

placing continual. Pressure

26:54

for decades. Lauded as

26:56

to new talk about what advocates and

26:58

allies can learn from the Latin American

27:00

Green ways. Low level of it and

27:02

how can it be applied you in

27:04

the United States. So. Unlike

27:07

in the Us where we

27:09

now joined pole Nicaragua and

27:11

then Salvadoran going backwards on

27:13

abortion rights. Countries like

27:15

Mexico, Columbia I him been. That

27:17

she, they have made strides and. It's

27:19

because of a combination of

27:22

many different strategies including a

27:24

legal strategy but also organizing

27:27

on the street. public health

27:29

narrative change. all of this

27:31

coming together to make progress.

27:34

And I just want to share

27:36

the court's reasoning in the Mexico

27:38

Supreme Court decision from September Twenty.

27:41

Twenty three Because I think this really

27:43

captures what the feminists on the ground

27:45

are hoping to make the policy makers

27:47

and the change makers in the courts

27:49

understand. So this is. The court's reasoning.

27:52

Quote The. Criminalization of abortion

27:54

constitutes an act of violence

27:57

and discrimination based on gender.

28:00

They perpetuate the stereotype that

28:02

women. And pregnant individuals

28:04

can only exercise their sexuality

28:06

for procreation and reinforces the

28:09

gender role that imposes motherhood

28:11

as a compulsory. Destiny is

28:13

the other One isn't Muscle mass

28:15

in a chat is sort of

28:18

us forces one bath. Or

28:21

suited me that he put

28:23

his plane. Or Cecile. This

28:25

was so. The Mexico Supreme

28:27

Court gets it. Too. Bad hours

28:29

doesn't. And I think

28:32

I'd also like to add that there

28:34

is a myth that Latinos who might

28:36

also identify as religious Catholics are cultural

28:39

Catholics. I think that's and the bleeding

28:41

into one which is also not true.

28:44

Latino. Support abortion. We've

28:46

been having a person since the

28:48

beginning of time. This is not

28:50

something that is only exclusively happening in

28:52

one area. Axis and Care is important

28:55

of all of us and so we

28:57

are seeing. these countries are part of

28:59

this movement. It's because Latino support

29:01

it. Right? So let's

29:04

talk politics. Young voters are making

29:06

it really clear. The Third: Quite

29:08

dissatisfied with President Joe Biden because

29:10

of his support of Israel's war

29:12

on Gaza. And. Last month.

29:14

although Biden did when the Michigan

29:16

primary there were almost. Fifty

29:19

Thousand votes. For the uncommitted

29:21

option on the democratic ballot.

29:24

And in Virginia. During. A speech on

29:26

reproductive rights. Young protesters came

29:28

out to voice their frustration.

29:42

So many guess team you'd tell us

29:45

what your syrian on the ground in

29:47

Colorado in terms of. Young Voters.

29:50

I. Think people honestly are looking

29:52

for representation to align with their

29:54

values and that's is difficult to

29:56

come by. Either way, we know

29:59

that there. A lot of support

30:01

for abortion. Within the sea

30:03

and we have. Part of

30:05

our polling to be able to support that. It's

30:08

difficult to say whether or not. They're.

30:11

Gonna go one way or another in

30:13

terms of a presidential election. But we

30:15

do know that it's still important for

30:17

us to talk to them about what's

30:19

at stake. It's important for us to

30:22

acknowledge that young people are taking all

30:24

of this into consideration when it comes

30:26

to their voting decisions. And so it's

30:28

really important and vital now more than

30:30

ever for them to go along their

30:32

values. but at the same time they're

30:34

not living the single issue lies and.

30:36

So it's just really, really complicated.

30:39

And Stephanie our You and the

30:41

Florida Access Network. Engaging specifically with

30:43

young voters in your state.

30:46

You. Know we organize and a few different. Communities

30:48

around Florida and we are

30:51

involved with Amendment for putting

30:53

abortion on the ballot in

30:55

Florida and young people are

30:58

voting with their values and

31:00

right now they don't feel

31:02

like they are being represented,

31:05

especially not on the executive.

31:07

Level. So the concern is

31:09

that folks are distracted and

31:12

they're not interested. In voting

31:14

down Blue no matter

31:16

what. Which is a typical

31:18

tactic by the democratic party. They wanna

31:21

vote for folks who share their values

31:23

for folks who are speaking out against

31:25

the Genocide in. Palestine for folks

31:28

who are wanting to protect abortion

31:30

access and expand abortion access. No

31:32

matter what, and unfortunately they are not

31:34

seeing those values represented. So what we're

31:37

seeing as people are voting with their

31:39

conscience and voting with their values and

31:41

we're curious about what that's gonna look

31:44

like in Florida in the ballot box.

31:46

especially with. Abortion being on the ballot. Stephanie.

31:49

Tin you say a little. Bit. More about what's

31:52

happening in Florida right now in

31:54

terms of abortion been on the

31:56

ballot? So. Right now we

31:58

in a legal. That all trying

32:01

to make sure that abortion is

32:03

able to get on the ballot

32:05

Discord has until April first to

32:07

make the ruling. And so if

32:09

this does make the November ballot,

32:11

it'll take sixty percent of voters

32:13

to pass it and put it

32:15

in the Florida constitution. with a

32:17

political changes and with changes to

32:19

the makeup of the State Supreme

32:21

Court's the. Super majority

32:24

republican. Legislature has

32:26

been able to pass anti

32:28

Abortion was back to back

32:31

with the hope of getting

32:33

a reinterpretation of this. State

32:36

constitutional protections for abortion

32:38

rights. So now what

32:40

the opportunity to have voters vote

32:42

directly for putting abortion on the

32:45

ballot? in the protection of abortion.

32:47

And he's an incredible opportunity for

32:49

Floridians to show that they care

32:52

about abortion rights and that abortion

32:54

rights are important to them and

32:56

in other states like Ohio, that

32:59

gives us a lot of hope

33:01

that we are on the right

33:03

side of history and. It

33:06

is not enough, right? Because

33:09

what about Initiative actually does?

33:11

Is it restores abortion rights

33:13

and Florida to pre bro

33:16

being overturned? It is our

33:18

twenty four weeks viability ban

33:21

and still does not undo

33:23

parental involvement. Laws like the

33:25

one that was impacted me. So

33:28

while we think it is an

33:30

important opportunity for Floridians to be

33:32

able to vote for the direct.

33:35

Right for Abortion in Florida. We also

33:37

know that it is not enough that

33:40

it is caught a fine and abortion

33:42

ban and this is why we encourage.

33:44

States around the country to really

33:47

consider what does it mean. To

33:49

dismantle anti abortion laws

33:51

altogether. I met he

33:53

got bring us up to date in terms

33:56

of what's happening in Colorado with the dueling

33:58

efforts on abortion. There. Yeah,

34:00

so we're currently in the process

34:02

of collecting petition signatures for our

34:04

ballot measure that we are running.

34:07

so it's a constitutional Amendment says.

34:09

Pro Abortion Initiative would take protections

34:11

here in Colorado one step further

34:14

by adding abortion rights to the

34:16

states constitution. but this Anti Abortion

34:18

initiative would identify as human beings

34:20

from the moment of conception. speaking

34:23

Abortion illegal here in the state.

34:25

So. Right now we're going to

34:27

the process of making sure that it

34:29

gets on the ballot, but we know

34:31

that way an abortion is on the

34:33

ballot, abortion wins. We've been seeing this

34:35

since the dogs decision and so we're

34:37

really trying to work towards that same

34:40

thing but ensuring that we're working towards

34:42

that access. That's what's really important for

34:44

us. This isn't the end all be

34:46

all. this is just one part of

34:48

the puzzle in order to provide some

34:50

that access. but that's currently. What we're working

34:52

towards this year. So. When

34:55

you say working, it really is a

34:57

lot of hard work. Frankly, decades upon

34:59

decades of work by women and allies

35:01

on the issue of reproductive justice, And

35:04

a lot of that time, He can

35:06

be dark sometimes, so. To.

35:08

End. Tell. Us:

35:10

What gives you hope? What brings you joy.

35:12

We're going to start with you, America: What

35:14

is something that brings you joy or hope.

35:16

And twenty Twenty four. My. Job

35:19

is really working within. The. Realm

35:21

of youth leadership and so. He

35:24

brings me a lot of joy to

35:26

work with other young Latina as who

35:28

are passionate about the issue, equipping them

35:30

with the same tools, the same mentorship,

35:33

The. I was able to come up with

35:35

and to be able to see really

35:37

the stairs in their eyes of really

35:39

the hope that they have to be

35:41

a part of that. Chains are part

35:43

of that impact and so have a

35:45

lot of Pope. Thank. You lose

35:47

is what brings you some joy or hope these days.

35:50

I'm deleting the long view. And

35:52

the overturning of Rovers Devastating in

35:54

many respects. And I think we're

35:56

seeing the consequences of that. And

35:59

at the same. The Time. It is

36:01

also an opportunity to create

36:03

a different vision for reproductive

36:06

rights and justice. And

36:08

what gives me hope also is

36:10

that were able to help people

36:12

in their darkest hour and now

36:14

we're resources so many that would

36:16

otherwise face the criminal legal system

36:18

alone. So. If. folks.

36:21

Are facing criminalization because of their

36:23

pregnancy and they need help. I

36:25

really hope that they would reach

36:27

out to us. Take.

36:29

Us out. Stephanie. Was given

36:31

me hope as modeling sustainable. Leader

36:33

said for my team because if

36:35

we can't continue to live. And. Thrive.

36:38

There is no movement, there is

36:40

no work. We are front line

36:42

workers and what else brings me

36:44

joy is enjoying the outdoors and

36:46

enjoying Florida before a drunk as

36:49

a sort. Of beauty here like

36:51

this spring's or beaches. There's just so

36:53

much the sun I'm and try and

36:55

turn nourished myself with the sun. And

36:57

the water, while I'm on this earth

36:59

than earthly be, brings me a lot.

37:01

Of joy in a lot of

37:03

hope to be able to continue

37:06

to live and create a utopia

37:08

for me and for my community.

37:10

Thank you so much much as it as as

37:12

Stephanie and many can load of his Thank you

37:14

for three years on this round table as we

37:17

delve into politics and Leptin or Latino voters in

37:19

the issues that matter to us which has as

37:21

has thank you for joining me on that the

37:23

know you say thank. You for having us think

37:25

you think. The com with. This

episode was produced by Monica Morales
