On June 8, 1978, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced ground-breaking news for its members and for friends and foes alike: it would ordain worthy male members of its church to the Priesthood without regard for race or color. This announcement ended a tradition that had been in place since the early 1850's when the Church had been persecuted in the Midwest and chased from place to place until it settled in the Great Basin, now the states of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Nevada. Critics said the Church changed its policy because of outside pressure. But, members who were there at that time, in Utah and around the United States–and enthusiastically welcomed the news–testify how that announcement was received with joys and tears. One couple, the Firths, who at that time were in Louisiana in the Air Force, shares their experiences; The husband, Bishop Firth, who led a congregation, found the reaction very revealing and inspiring. Their story is the first of nine episodes that were first broadcast on the 40th anniversary of the announcement on June 8, 2018 on KLO Radio in Salt Lake City.
