During the COVID-19 pandemic we spent more time than before working on online platforms like Zoom. At first it seemed like an effective, elegant solution to remote work but it turns out it’s taking its toll. So many people have reported similar experience of being tired that the term Zoom fatigue became a hot topic. It refers to the mental exhaustion associated with online video conferencing because virtual interactions can be extremely hard on the brain.
Based on the information in three articles I chose as a resource for this episode I talk first about the reasons why video calls are so draining and then share some tips how to reduce Zoom fatigue.
Why are video meetings more tiring than face-to-face ones?
1. We cannot rely on non-verbal communication
2. We get concerned about our surroundings
3. We don’t walk
4. Looking at our own face is stressful
5. Natural rhythm of conversation is disrupted
How to reduce the negative effects of online video meetings
1. Stay fully present
2. Let your eyes rest
3. Build in breaks
4. Limit the number of meetings and people involved
5. Switch to phone calls or email
6. Lock your room
