The Czech language, just like German, French, Spanish, or Russian, has three grammatical genders. However, there is nothing inherently male about the "masculine" nouns or female about the "feminine" nouns. How to tell what gender a noun has?

As far as "unliving nouns", i.e. things, are concerned, it is not logical, it is just something you have to learn. But don't get panicky! There are some rules, or rather guidelines, how to recognize what gender a noun has (and we're talking about the basic dictionary form now, i.e. Nominative)...

Čeština, stejně jako němčina, francouzština, španělština nebo ruština, má tři gramatické rody. Na "mužských" podstatných jménech však není nic bytostně mužského a na "ženských" zase ženského. Jak poznat rod podstatného jména?

Pokud jde o "neživotná podstatná jména", tedy věci, není to logické, budete se to prostě muset naučit. Ale nepanikařte! Existují určitá pravidla, nebo spíše vodítka, jak rod podstatného jména rozpoznat (a bavíme se nyní o základní slovníkové formě, tzn. nominativu)...
