Topic: Sony’s New Cross Platform And Games That Need It Pronto!

In the official Playstation Blog, which I will link in the show notes for you, Sony announced that there is now Cross Play available in Fortnite!!!  And that’s not all, according to the blogpost,

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.

What this means is that the cross platform play won’t be limited to Fornite.  Pretty soon, Xbox, Playstation, and even Nintendo Switch owners will be able to enjoy playtime in the same world via different platforms.  That brings us to out segments topic: Which games would benefit the most from cross platform play? I have compiled a list of my top ten choices, in no particular order.  Send us a Tweet @leveledupgamers for your choice if your game didn’t make it on the list.

  1. Minecraft: This is a must!  It’s already possible on the Switch and Xbox.  Not only that but Nintendo made a commercial featuring cross platform with Xbox by its side.  It would be cool to see a second commercial with Playstation, Xbox, and Switch all playing together, but I doubt that’ll happen.  As long as we can all play together soon.
  2. Monster Hunter:  This is such a cool game and having a larger pool of players to join matches is simply a must.  Make Monster Hunter Cross play pronto!
  3. Rainbow Six Siege: This game is old, but the player base keeps growing.  Now let’s see that, “When worlds collide…” scenario and let Xbox and PS gamers shoot it out for the best tactical shooting game available.
  4. EAs sports games:  Ok, so this one is cheating a bit for a top ten list, but if my friends can play FIFA on their playstation, I’d love to join them while I play it from my EA Access subscription.  Same goes for any other EA sports game.
  5. Dark Souls: I am a personal fan of the Dark Souls series.  This game is perfect because you really don’t communicate with people via voice but rather, through emoticons and pointing.  Praise the sun anyone? Let’s join forces against the Darkness in Dark Souls series.
  6. Mortal Kombat: I bought the most recent Mortal Kombat for the PS4.  I stopped playing it because all my friends decided to get it for the Xbox.  I’d gladly jump back if I could fight against them while I’m on my PS4 and they are on their Xbox.
  7. Destiny 2:  Playstation just gave away Destiny 2 for PS+ this month.  Is there a greater way to increase the player base than by expanding prospective game partners to the Xbox?  Johnson, get on this quick.
  8. Dead by Daylight:  Though I’ve been playing dead by daylight on PC for a while, I recently downloaded the Playstation version, as it was free with PS+ in August.  This game, and other indie games like it, deserve to have the highest possible player base because many of the great indie games die due to a low player base.  Let’s give indies a better chance at survival!
  9. Battlefield 5:  This game isn’t out yet, but we know it will be multiplatform and that it will have some form of Battle Royale.  With gamers from Xbox and Playstation gaming together, finding gamers for the Battle Royale mode should be easier with a bigger pool of gamers joining in on the fun.
  10. Call of Duty Franchise: I left Call of Duty for the end because I think that what will happen is this: Older COD games will become cross-platform compatible but the newer installments will be locked under a 6-12 month exclusivity period.  Since Playstation is playing it on a game by game basis, I’m sure they want to guarantee their game sales first before giving everyone the freedom to game anywhere they want. It’s a perk from being the most sold console in this generation.

In the end, cross platform play won’t mean much if there isn’t cross-progression.  That’s the next step in this evolution of gaming and it’s actually something we discussed in our very first episode of the podcast.  For now, we take what we can get. Which game do you think will be the second to receive the green light on cross-platform play? Let us  know with a Tweet or on Discord.

Entertainment Segment: Movie of the Month – Anon

Spoiler Chat of Anon

Characters

  • Sal Frieland – Clive Owen
  • The Girl (Alison) – Amanda Seyfried

Plot – In the future, all humans (it seems) have had a system installed in their bodies that allow them to record everything they see.  Additionally, the software also works like their own cell phone and can allow them to text, make calls, and even display what they are seeing to others.  One day, a series of murders start happening but it seems like the victims are seeing someone themselves get killed through the killers eyes as opposed to seeing who the killer is.  This is accomplished by someone, the killer, hacking into the victim’s system before killing them. The killer is very tech savvy, so much, so, that he/she could hack you and make you see things that aren’t there or hide things from you live.

Random notes while watching:

  • Off the get go, reminds me of an episode of Black Mirror.  It would fit right into that universe.
  • Bugs me that camera head movement in FP view is slower than actual head movement.
  • Do love that you can send files simply by thinking about it.  It is a literal human network. Animals (pets) seem to be connected as well.
  • Love that your eyes can analyze anything, from the calorie content in individual food items to an access of your life’s history.
  • Translation feature can come very handy.  This kind of technology can bring the world closer, or maybe drive us further apart.
  • The victims do a good job of not knowing where to look before getting killed.  They genuinely appear confused.
  • Love attention to detail.  Employees don’t have computers at their desk because all of their work is handled in their mind computer.  Computers have become obsolete.
  • A bit jarring to go from Wider Screen Aspect to Full Screen.
  • Interesting twist, if a bit predictable.  The hacker is the one being hacked.
  • In the end, actual hacker is identified and through some hack trickery, he is deceived and killed old school, with a gunshot.  There’s a small chatter between The Girl and Sal, who explains that she created an algorithm that allows her life to be private in a world that isn’t private anymore by, ironically, giving a small fragment of everything she sees and does to everyone in the city.  Without the algorithm, nobody can trace her. Then, she walks away and we see through the eyes of Sal as she erases herself digitally, assuming she is gone forever.
  • This, a love story it is not.  I didn’t expect them to fall in love, but perhaps a hint that there may be something in the future between them, or something positive in an otherwise gloomy movie would have satisfied me a bit more.

Memorable Quotes

  • “It’s not that I have something to hide.  I have nothing I want you to see.” ~The Girl

Theme

  • Things aren’t always what they seem to be.

Rating

  • 6/10.  I enjoyed the movie but everyone seems so bored out of their minds.   I feel that they could have done more with the technology aspect of it, perhaps shown what advanced have been made elsewhere.  If you listened to the spoiler chat but haven’t watched it, I would recommend you watching it if you have nothing to do on a random day in the upcoming winter vacation but don’t go out of your way to see it.
