My art practice embodies Denbaw Gaari which means "mothers thread" in Bambara and explores maternal relationships. Living in Brooklyn as a Black Malian woman expands my genetic memory linked to the fact that my paternal grandmother handmade bogolan (mudcloth). "Tantie Oumou" represents an African aunty who is cheerful and caring. I created this piece while going through a set of positive and difficult changes. During that time I thought about my aunt Oumou who was always smiling and teasing. This piece embodies my Denbaw Gaari concept to the fullest and touches on the notion that it takes a village to raise a child. "Vision" features words that manifest in my mind when I think about healing. This painting considers healing elements like cleansing, moving forward (avancer), time, spirit (esprit), clarity and smell (humer). Vision acknowledges healing as a path instead of a destination. French being my first language, it felt natural to include some French words. When creating this piece I decided to add lines that represent boundaries. "Grounding" explores my preparation when I started my healing journey through depression and anxiety. Recognizing my worth (dignes) manifested through making peace (paix) with my human (humains) flaws. I also included what makes me feel grounded such as nature which is crucial to achieve a healthier frequency. Through grounding, we can make our inner voice louder than self-doubt and self-sabotage. When that inner voice is free, our true purpose can then reveal itself.
