In self-defense one great example of DISSIPATING a life threatening attack is a dropping sprawl from a tackle. As we look together let’s see how and what you might DISSIPATE that threatens your life.

It was 3 or 4 years ago and we were holding our instructor semi annual certifications. Some may call them Black Belt tests. That being said, unlike any Black Belt testing I’ve ever seen, and I have been invited to officiate at many throughout my 38 years of training, this was different.

Our demonstrations are completely based on defense, and frequently a large opponent or attacker is paired with a much smaller defender. This emphasizes the DNA of our system.

The idea is that unlike MMA, boxing or wrestling matches where fighters are matched with opponents weighing in within a few pounds of one another, we might match a 250 pound opponent with a 160 pound defender.

The purpose is not to prove fighting prowess, rather defensive skill. It was here that I watched a much larger attacker lunge at the smaller defender to tackle her to the ground. As the attacker lunged at her mid to lower torso she shot her legs back to sprawl out of his reach and simultaneously dropped all her weight on his head, neck and upper back.

Within a couple feet of me I saw her little body propelled backwards like a doll. Yet her weight was enough to drop her attacker face first into the mat as she landed atop this head and shoulders with all her weight.

Thud, as he hit the ground, which for all intensive purposes might have been the sidewalk, we called for them to stop.

Her DISSIPATION was an effective defense of a life threatening attack in real life. DISSIPATING her much larger attacker was perhaps all she would need as his face met concrete with 150 pounds of dynamic force.

In your life do you seek to overwhelm, beat or dominate threats? If so, by definition you probably need to be stronger, faster and more agile to succeed. Would you consider that this almost never succeeds? In fact, it is a lie promoted over and over again in movies.

If smaller, weaker opponents could fight toe to toe with much larger opponents and win they would match them in cage fights on a regular basis. They don’t.

However, the ability to DISSIPATE life’s attacks might be all that’s required to escape, and live another day…
