Psychiatrist Dr. Hemant Nowbath, presented a paper titled Indenture: Stress and Mental Ilness, at a conference organized by the 1860 Indentured Labourers Foundation, Verulam. In his paper, Dr. Nowbath noted that all photos of Indentured Labourers taken at the time reflect despair, anxiety and fear.
He joined Zakia Ahmed Siddiqi to chat about the mental conditioning of the 1860 Indian Indentured Labourers and the high suicide rates during the period of Indenture.
