“Do you think that I’ve come to bring peace on earth?” That’s what Jesus asks his disciples in today’s gospel lesson from Luke 12:49-56. "No," he says as he answers his own question, "No, I tell you, but rather division!" It's a shocking text that at first glance seems to imply Jesus wants division. As we unpack this text we can see that Christ is calling us to follow him and continue his mission even if there is great social cost.
