Found in Transition with Paria Hassouri, MD
“If there is a book you want to read, but hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” This Toni Morrison quote inspired Paria Hassouri to write Found In Transition, a modern family’s story of a child’s gender change and a mother’s transformation.
When Paria’s teenager, designated male at birth, first revealed that she thought the sex she was assigned was not her actual gender identity, Paria’s first reaction was to shut her down. In this interview we discuss how the initial reaction of denial and fear transformed through love to acceptance for her daughter, taking her from a blindsided parent with no other stories like hers to relate to, to sharing her family’s story as a roadmap for others. Learn how hope, community, media representation and a needed update in healthcare standards contributed to her family’s story.
