Welcome to the Lisa Arrigan on Demand podcast. You know, it's not every

0:03

day that two guitar gods call into the show together, but that is exactly

0:08

what happened when Joe Satriani and Steve V called me. They're going to be

0:13

coming to the Warner Theater April eleventh the satch Vy tour, and they've been

0:18

recording new music together, including a great new song that's out March twenty ninth

0:22

called Sea of a Motion Part one. Now, Joe and Steve go way

0:26

back growing up together on Long Island. Joe was actually Steve's guitar teacher.

0:32

In addition to the new music they've been doing together and the upcoming tour,

0:35

we also talk about Joe going out on the road this summer with Sammy Hagar.

0:40

Now, Sammy is doing a whole lot of van Halen music on his

0:42

tour with Michael Anthony original bassis for Van Halen and Jason bonhamon drums. Joe

0:48

Satriani will be playing all the Eddie van Halen parts. We'll talk about his

0:53

approach to that. Plus Steve I first became a fan of his back in

0:57

the eighties when he was with David Lee Roth always remember that iconic Yankee Rose

1:02

video. I asked him about those days and G three. I asked Joe

1:07

Satriani about his G three tours? Will there be another one? Find out?

1:11

Here's my conversation with Joe Satriani and Steve Vi. Hi, Hey,

1:15

good morning. I am so grateful to have a couple of guitar gods joining

1:19

me, Joe Satriani and Steve VI. I was just listening to your new

1:23

song. I absolutely love it, The Sea of Emotion Part one Rockin' It's

1:29

powerful. Tell us a little bit about the genesis of the new song.

1:34

I can kick it off by letting you know that. When Steve and I

1:37

finally realized that we really wanted to do an album together, I reflected on

1:44

the theme of the record. Besides the obvious. I thought, what am

1:49

I going to use is my springboard, my sort of spiritual springboard for writing.

1:56

And I went back to place an actual play in car place, Long

2:01

Island where Steve and I grew up, and there was this place called the

2:07

Sea of Emotion. We dubbed it the Sea of Emotion. It was really

2:09

just a field that was part of the public school complex where we both went

2:15

to school and it was a place where late at night we would hang out

2:21

and you know, express our deepest thoughts for the motions together, and it

2:27

just became a cool hangout place. There were all the rock and rollers back

2:30

then, and I thought, I'm going to start writing about that. So

2:35

I started writing these two songs, which is why the first one you hear

2:39

is Cold Part one, and I thought, it's going to be about that,

2:43

and it's going to be a celebration of the kind of things that we

2:46

loved back then as young want to be rock stars. And I'm so happy

2:51

that when I sent it off to Steve, he was like, yeah, I got some ideas to add to this right away, and so that's how

2:58

the whole thing got started. Yeah, it was magnificent to hear those tracks

3:01

and to feel that finally, you know, there's a nice opportunity here to

3:07

you know, do something together and contribute, and there's actually a part three.

3:14

Kind of remarkable because after I received the two tracks from Joe and started

3:17

working on them, I remembered that when we were kids, I was taking

3:23

lessons from Joe and at one of our lessons he had a sound on sound

3:29

real to real recorder and we started to just record something. And I had

3:32

been playing at that time for a year and a half, so Joke was

3:37

showing me this rip. We recorded this thing, and he called it Reflections

3:42

on a year and a half because that's how long I was playing. And

3:46

I got these tapes from Joe probably about ten years after we had recorded them

3:52

or so, and I transferred it to digital and just held onto it all

3:55

through these years and took a little slippet of it, and that's how the

4:00

third movement is kicked off. So there is real history in there. I

4:04

mean, there's the part of the recording is over fifty years old. Wow.

4:10

Well, Steve, you were taught guitar by Joe and Joe you have

4:14

a long list of famous guitars that you have taught. Steve. What's he

4:17

like as a teacher? I mean, is he a hard ass? Is

4:19

he difficult? Does he demand a lot? Oh, he's got a big

4:26

ruler and when you do a mistake, he kicks the well. Joe's fantastic,

4:32

constantly sharing, very strict. You know, you got to know your

4:36

stuff, no kidding around. You got to know your lesson so much fun

4:41

because you know when you're a teenager especially. I was a teenager in the

4:46

seventies and totally enamored with all that really great classic rock music. And I'd

4:49

go to my lesson and I say, you know, how do you play

4:53

this? You know, and he would just be able to show me every

4:56

led Zeppelin song. Anything I asked, he was able to play it.

5:00

And this was like, you know, heaven in a cup for it for

5:03

me because I could actually put my fingers on the instrument and something that sounded

5:09

like a song came out. You know. It's great here in DC.

5:12

We are so looking forward to the upcoming tour, the satch Vi Tour coming

5:15

to the Warner Theater April eleventh. What can fans expect to see during that

5:18

show, Well, it goes without saying. There's gonna be a lot of

5:23

guitar playing. Both Steve and I are gonna do separate sets with our bands,

5:30

and we'll probably be playing a lot of new music and then digging deep

5:35

into our catalogs. Yeah, and then we're going to play together. The

5:41

show will climax with us taking the stage and playing a number of songs,

5:46

including the new single Wow. So fans are gonna get three sets. Yeah,

5:51

yes, amazing. Well, you got to find out more about the

5:54

tour of the satch Vi Tour coming to the Warner Theater April eleventh at Saturiani

5:58

dot com or Vi dot com. Joe, I want to quickly ask you

6:01

about the summer tour you're doing with Sammy Hagar. Are you and Sammy and

6:04

Mike Anthony and Jason Bonham performing a whole lot of Van Halen music? You

6:09

know you're going to be doing Eddie van Halen's parts. What's your approach going

6:12

to be and do you feel any kind of you know, pressure, responsibility

6:15

honoring somebody who's no longer with us. Yeah. Oh, it's always a

6:23

unique pressure when you're going to tackle music of, you know, one of

6:30

your biggest heroes. And so I was a huge fan of Eddie van Halen

6:35

the moment first time I heard him. And although I've spent most of my

6:42

years trying really hard not to copy him, now I'm in a position where

6:47

I have to copy him, which is ironic, you know. So yeah,

6:54

there are things that I'm quirks about his playing that I really have to

6:57

get under my fingers right now, a King Hawk, you, I'm at

7:01

my to do list up on the wall, and it's got a very long

7:06

set list, the best of all World setlist. It's just got a massive

7:11

amount of songs spanning Sammy's career. So I have a lot of work cut

7:15

out for me, you know, from learning Montrose to a Van Halen Sammy

7:21

remembering chicken Foot stuff right with my own songs. So yeah, I'm looking

7:27

forward to it though. Awesome. Well, Steve, I'm a kid of

7:30

the eighties. That's what was my youth, and one of the big videos

7:33

of my youth was Yankee Rose. David Lee Roth, you there on guitar,

7:38

What do you remember about the making of that video? And have you

7:41

seen that video recently? Every now and then I come across those old eighties

7:46

videos and I just think how much fun they were really because back then,

7:51

well you can imagine, you know, David Lee Roth and the way that

7:55

he'd liked to conduct his you know, full environment exactly. Yeah, when

8:01

we were doing that whole eatam and smile thing. I mean back then,

8:05

you could you know, we had the stage was like the size of a

8:09

football field. We were in the Guinness Book of World's Record for having the

8:11

most lighting cans and you could wear the craziest clothes and you could run around

8:18

that stage and do crazy things. But you know, we played our asses

8:24

off and it was just a time of It was like a perfect storm because

8:30

being able to play at that time in the eighties, during that whole musical

8:35

movement was a real hoot. Fans have long loved the G three tours that

8:41

Joe You've organized, in Steve, you've been a part of them. Will

8:43

there be another G three tour at some point? What's it been five or

8:48

six years since there's been a G three? Yeah? Well, you know,

8:52

after just completing this T three reunion with Steve and Eric, it got

8:58

me excited about looking ahead. And Steve and I have got a lot of

9:03

touring and recording ahead of us, so I haven't really thought about that,

9:07

you know, when I mix in of the Sammy Hagar tour as well.

9:11

But I know that I'm gonna want to do another one, and I just

9:16

haven't figured out how, when and where right right and who? Yeah,

9:22

I really appreciate you guys checking in this morning. Joe Satriani, Steve I

9:26

working on a new album together and I've already heard the first song, which

9:31

is coming out March twenty ninth, The See of Emotion Part one. Cannot

9:33

wait to play it for you on Big one hundred and then of course the

9:37

sat Vay Tour come into the Warner Theater April eleventh. Make sure to get

9:39

your tickets. Head to Satriani dot com and VI dot com again. Thanks

9:43

so much for your time, Joe and Steve, and we'll see you in

9:46

DC very soon. Thank you,
