Host Cameron Green speaks with Slovakian musician Nina Pixel all about her most recent album release, “Ancestral Archeology” – an experimental audio-based exploration and reimagination of Slovak culture and folklore. They explore conceptualizations of gender in the context of Slovakian (and pre-Slovakian) culture through the role of gender identity, power, and oppression in folk stories.
They also give insights into traditions, rituals, and approaches to life in naturalistic environments – which leads to the central question: “How should we understand a culture when its previous ways understanding have disappeared?” Nina takes a creative approach, where we are left to invent, transform, and humanize culture to serve us – rather than merely to dig up old bones, dress them up with prevailing ideologies, and have us serve culture.
