Live on KEXP, one of a
0:03
kind performance. Come
0:08
on, let's go. This is recorded in the
0:10
shadow of the space debate. This is...
0:12
This is Angel. This is Michelle
0:14
from Japanese Records. And this is... Meryl from TUNY
0:16
Arts. This is Mac DeMarco. Hey,
0:18
this is Courtney Bennett. Hi, this is KEXP.
0:21
Thank you. All right. Welcome,
0:28
everybody, to Live on KEXP. I'm
0:31
your host, Troy Nelson. On
0:33
the show this time, it's the
0:35
experimental electronic pop of
0:37
producer and singer-songwriter,
0:39
Glasser. Glasser
0:52
is the project name for
0:55
California-based singer, composer and producer
0:57
Cameron Mezzaro. She
0:59
released Apply, her first EP under
1:01
that name, back in 2009. She's
1:05
been working at her own pace
1:07
ever since and developing her sound,
1:09
an original blend of electronic and
1:12
dance music with influence from folk
1:14
traditions, dream pop, trance, jazz
1:17
and even spoken word. It's
1:20
all tied together by her nimble, melodic
1:22
singing voice. Her
1:24
latest is called Crux and is available
1:26
on One Little Independent. I
1:30
was lucky to be the DJ that
1:32
interviewed Glasser for this live-in studio. I
1:35
asked her about her influences and
1:37
got a surprising answer. You
1:40
started to find your way into music through
1:42
electronic music. And I'm curious who
1:44
those electronic artists were that helped you find
1:46
your path. Actually,
1:50
well, there were lots of electronic artists that
1:52
helped me find my path, but truly, I
1:55
wanted to be in the rock band. And so I... I
2:00
found electronic music out of
2:02
pure frustration that like every
2:04
boy that I knew would not let me
2:06
be in their band. How rude. I
2:09
know. So I didn't really intend
2:11
to be an electronic musician, but
2:13
it was where my language was,
2:16
like most naturally. And I
2:18
was given GarageBand, and
2:20
thank God, because it
2:23
saved me. Whee! Her
2:30
first EP and the first full-length rig
2:33
were created mainly in GarageBand.
2:49
In 2013, she released Interiors,
2:52
inspired by a book about New
2:54
York architecture, proving that though it
2:56
may be difficult to dance about
2:59
architecture, you can certainly feel and
3:01
even sing about it. In
3:18
2018, she put out
3:20
Sex Tape, recordings of conversations about
3:23
encounters and experiences provide the emotional
3:25
and rhythmic basis for some intense
3:27
music. It's chock full of hooks,
3:30
too. I wonder what this will
3:32
feel like. On my
3:34
knees. And then, pep,
3:37
pep, pep, and then, pep, pep,
3:39
pep, pep, pep. Struggling to find
3:42
a way to make new music,
3:44
she started taking lessons in Balkan
3:46
singing. It was inspiring and unlocked
3:48
the current Glasser era. For
4:04
this episode, Cameron and multi-instrumentalist
4:07
Robbie Lee performed six songs.
4:09
Four from Crux, one from
4:11
Interiors, and one previously unreleased
4:14
song, Defeat. Here's
4:16
Glasser, live on KEXP.
