1:04

1:10

what's happening my man we're getting close

1:12

there's only one more winky Wednesday before

1:14

the 2024

1:16

NFL draft for those of you who don't know

1:18

Nicholas Winkler my former radio colleague We

1:21

had a Niners podcast before I started doing

1:23

locked on 49ers He jumps on with us

1:25

once a week the voice of the fantasy

1:27

is sometimes known just to chat it up

1:29

about your San Francisco 49ers

1:31

and a lot of not talk about the draft this

1:33

week before we get deep into draft stuff wink Brandon

1:37

Ayuk Unfollowed the

1:39

49ers on Instagram. Can you

1:41

believe it? Where were you?

1:44

Will you tell your children about the day you

1:46

learned the brand now you unfollowed the 49ers on

1:48

Instagram? I just hid in

1:50

the closet all day after that. I didn't want

1:52

to go out. I was so depressed I couldn't understand

1:54

what was happening. Why would he do that? No,

1:57

I mean, it's it's the move now, right? It's like

2:00

All right, I want a new deal. I'm

2:02

going to scrub my social media and that'll

2:04

show them. That'll show them I mean

2:06

business. I'm not following them anymore. It doesn't say

2:08

I'm a 40. I

2:10

get it. It's a move. It's a play. And

2:12

guys do it. And so I think

2:15

that it's just the next step, right? And what's going

2:17

to come after that? All week long, we're going to

2:19

keep hearing about he's unhappy. Trades, trades, trades. All the

2:21

way through the draft. Could this be when the 49ers

2:23

trade at you? I don't think that's

2:25

going anywhere. I think that's going to be something we just got to

2:28

live with for the next few weeks, at least.

2:30

And then hopefully they do resign him or get

2:32

something going with him. I hope they don't trade him. I

2:35

love Brandon Iook. I hope he's a 49er forever. But

2:39

it's football. It's a business. He's playing this part right

2:41

now. Absolutely. And I

2:44

think the draft is one of those deadlines

2:46

make deals. And if you're going to trade

2:48

Brandon Iook, it's going to be before the

2:50

draft, right? So we only have, what, eight

2:53

more days of this? And Croc,

2:55

if I'm not mistaken, two years ago when

2:58

this all happened with Deebo Samuel, and it

3:00

was much more dramatic than it has been

3:02

now with Brandon Iook. And there was official

3:04

trade requests. And there was

3:06

offers from the New York

3:08

Jets. But then once the draft came and went,

3:10

it was like, ah, OK.

3:14

Deebo's got to talk with the 49ers now, and that's it. And I

3:16

feel like that's the way it's going to go with Brandon Iook. And

3:19

I think it's even different for Iook because on the

3:22

fifth year option, he actually makes good money. Deebo

3:24

Samuel throughout his contract, the fourth year

3:27

for a second round pick. Not

3:32

a whole lot of money. That fifth year option money,

3:34

it's pretty solid. I think it was roughly $14 million.

3:38

So even if he has to play on the

3:40

$14 million, a lot of players, they don't care

3:42

for it because, hey, man, we want that long

3:44

term stability. Who's to say next year Brandon

3:46

Iook doesn't go for $13.50? Now,

3:50

next year will be a legit contract

3:52

season. So, hey, I

3:54

want to go above and beyond. And with the 49ers,

3:57

we've talked a lot about where he is in the

3:59

pecking order. and the usage of

4:01

him. That 1350 can

4:04

easily go back down to 980,000 yards, you

4:06

know, and then now you lose

4:11

all leverage when it comes to

4:13

negotiating power. So, you know, you

4:15

want something that's more secure, long-term,

4:17

guaranteed, and I think that's what he's

4:19

truly looking for. From

4:21

the 49ers, might I add, from the

4:23

49ers, I strongly believe he wants to

4:26

be a 49er, and the

4:28

49ers want him to be a 49er. It's

4:30

just making it work. It's

4:32

funny because I've heard stuff like, you know, he was

4:35

upset, moved out of his house, it's been vacant since

4:37

the Super Bowl, and then there's other

4:39

reports that it's like, he's been working out at

4:41

the 49ers facility, you know? So, it's like, which

4:43

one is it? Is he bounced

4:45

mentally? Is he gone? Is he just waiting to

4:47

read you his contract? Is he just having fun?

4:50

The tweet that he said, I don't know exactly

4:52

how he worded it, but he was like, oh,

4:55

what's up, Mike Tomlin? Some people say we look

4:57

like, and everyone's like losing their minds, like, what

4:59

are you doing, Brad? I think I've been just

5:01

having fun. He's like, hey, guys, watch this. I'm

5:03

going to unfollow the 49ers. How long

5:06

do you think it's going to be before someone

5:08

notices, right? And one of his buddies is like,

5:10

okay, here's 20 bucks. I'll say it's one day.

5:12

I say it takes a week. And someone's like,

5:15

I got 20 bucks says, within an hour,

5:18

someone notices. Probably just having fun. Because I know,

5:20

I would be absolutely

5:22

having fun if people lost their minds that much

5:24

about stupid stuff, like who you're following on Instagram.

5:26

I'd be having a lot of fun with this

5:28

stuff. I feel like Brandon, I you might be

5:30

doing that as well. But I don't know

5:32

what's in his heart. Maybe he wants out. I have no

5:34

idea. But I think we're going to find out if he's

5:37

staying or not staying here in the in about a week

5:39

week when it comes to how he how

5:41

much he should get paid and what he should be

5:44

asking for. I feel like the

5:46

Philadelphia Eagles might have done the 49ers a

5:48

favor. Because I think it's a really close

5:50

comp, probably the closest comp in the league.

5:52

And it's the most recent contract that's been

5:54

done in the league with the D'Vante Smith,

5:56

who could be a potential number one wide

5:59

receiver is not currently his team's number

6:01

one wide receiver, a first round pick,

6:03

$25 million per year, three years added

6:06

to after his fifth year option. So that'd

6:08

be three more years after this year for

6:10

Brandon IU through 2027. He would still be

6:13

in his 20s with an opportunity to do

6:16

another big deal after being potentially featured as

6:18

a number one wide receiver. Like how

6:21

much more would Brandon IU ask than Devontae

6:24

Smith? I think the market's been set. This

6:26

should be a pretty easy deal. Or do

6:28

you see IU on a different level than

6:30

compared to someone like Devontae Smith? No,

6:33

I think the comparison is right. I also just

6:35

hope that it's not like the

6:37

base, right? Where they're like, okay, well, we're not going

6:39

to go any lower than that. We can't settle for

6:41

that. So we're going to ask for this, right? Then

6:44

we'll meet somewhere in the middle. And so then maybe

6:46

the Eagles didn't do them a service,

6:49

right? They actually set the bottom

6:51

line a little too high for the players. Not

6:53

that he's not worth it because he is. I

6:55

used to have a great receiver. He's fantastic. But

6:57

again, we go over it every time, right? When

6:59

you have the highest paid this and the highest

7:01

paid that and the highest paid this and that

7:03

and over and over, you can't also then shell

7:06

out a ton of money for what's essentially your

7:08

second wide receiver because you still owe Devo

7:10

Samuel a ton of money, right? So I'm

7:13

a little concerned at how this is all

7:15

playing out. I'm concerned at this number that

7:17

now Philadelphia has set because it's not going

7:19

to be lower than that. There's no

7:21

way Brandon and I use people that are going to be

7:23

like, oh yeah, we'll take less money than Devonta Smith. Like

7:25

I just don't see that happening. But

7:27

I do think it makes it easier because it should

7:30

be in the same ballpark. Right?

7:32

You look at him, what he is in, sure.

7:34

You kind of what we had that discussion

7:36

about what, what they are in comparison to

7:39

each other's office. I even think Devonta Smith

7:41

is maybe more valued in their

7:43

office just in the sense of the

7:45

overall pecking order of all their weapons,

7:47

where I'd say, if you told

7:49

Kyle Shanahan today, all right, you

7:52

got to lose one of these four players, all

7:55

right, Devonta Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, or

7:57

Brandon Iud, which guy would he say,

7:59

you know, I could probably do without

8:01

him. I think it's Brandon. You

8:05

know, he's the number one target in the sense of the

8:07

most target in the passing game. I

8:09

still think he probably feels

8:11

like even if I don't replace

8:14

some replace him with someone that can give me 1350,

8:18

I can replace somebody and give me 800 and then Deebo. I

8:21

need you to have a really good year to make

8:23

up that difference. And then a you know, George, you

8:25

know what? We're going to get you. So you're actually

8:28

200 yards on top of what you got last year

8:30

and CMC will continue to do what you do

8:32

with him. I think that's

8:34

the argument the 49ers are having for Brandon.

8:37

I do think it kind of seems

8:40

like it makes it easy from the contract

8:42

standpoint that you know, with the Devante Smith

8:44

situation, but also could make these

8:46

a little tougher. The 49ers don't quite see it the same way. Well,

8:51

I think you're I think you put your you

8:53

nailed it with him being the fourth option, right?

8:55

Because those other three guys are so unique in

8:57

what they do, right? McCaffrey just such a receiver

8:59

out of the backfield can play any position out

9:01

there. Kittle such an amazing blocker, right?

9:04

One of the best, if not the best blocking tight

9:06

end and Lincoln and Deebo. There's nobody else in the

9:09

league like Deebo. I think it's a great receiver. But

9:11

yeah, when you come down to it, it's like, how

9:14

different is he then Devante Smith, right? How

9:16

different is he then these other number two

9:18

receivers out there? And really, could they replace

9:20

that a lot easier than you can replace

9:22

a Kittle, that you can replace the CMC

9:24

that you can replace a Deebo. And

9:27

Devante Smith has been the second option

9:30

outside of obviously like utilizing their quarterback legs. Yeah.

9:33

He's the second option is yeah, A.J.

9:36

Brown, Devante Smith, Dallas

9:38

Goddard and you know, Saquon

9:41

Barkley may take a bump up now, right?

9:43

He's on the team. Maybe they utilize him

9:45

more, but it's been A.J. then Devante in

9:47

that office. It

9:51

feels like the

9:54

49ers, while

9:56

we know what their MO has been, when they do deals, they kind

9:58

of slope. play it and

10:00

then make, you know, make, make a run

10:02

right before training camp to sign their, their

10:05

star players. This feels like

10:07

a time when they should kind of hurry it up a little

10:09

bit. And I think the Philadelphia Eagles

10:11

are really smart getting the deal done now,

10:13

getting the deal done before I Uke signs

10:15

his, because whoever went first right

10:17

now, I used to at least say, I need a dollar

10:19

more than what Devontae Smith got. If I Uke went first,

10:21

Devontae Smith would have said, Hey, that's a good comp. I

10:23

want a dollar more than what that guy got. Cause we're

10:25

next. Uh, you definitely want to

10:27

get it done before CD land and

10:30

before Justin Jefferson signed these huge deals. The

10:32

Jeffrey Justin, Justin Jefferson gets like blows away

10:34

the wider secret market and gets 31 million

10:36

per year. That's going to make everybody's price

10:38

go up. So I do think the I Uke stuff.

10:42

If the 49ers were ever going to do a deal earlier,

10:44

I Uke should be the one.

10:46

Once they decide they want to do a

10:48

deal, like get that thing done. And I

10:50

wonder if there's, then I don't, I

10:53

think they do want to do a deal with I Uke, but I

10:55

just wonder if maybe they're like,

10:57

well, let's just see if someone offers us

10:59

something crazy in the draft. Maybe it'll make

11:01

it worth it because we do have some

11:04

salary cap realities. And then we'll go back to

11:06

the table after the draft.

11:10

I also think that there's one other player that

11:12

could drive up the price for I Uke, at

11:14

least in the I Uke's mind. I

11:16

think it's his teammate, Deebo Samuel. You

11:19

know, it's like, Hey, this contract that he got

11:21

two or three years old now. And

11:24

I haven't been paid, but I'm,

11:27

you know, I'm the all pro receiver right now. And

11:29

you guys want to continue to build around me in

11:31

his offense. Well, why is he

11:34

getting more guaranteed money? Why is he

11:36

getting more money per year? And

11:38

that would be a conversation that, you know,

11:41

I would have in the game, goes back to how

11:43

much do they value what he does? Yeah.

11:46

It's like, uh, I want Deebo plus 13%

11:48

because the cap has gone up 13%. You

11:51

know what I mean? Um, next

11:53

I want to talk pre-draft visits, maybe

11:57

getting some clues to what the 49ers plans are in

11:59

the NFL draft. And I've got a dark horse name,

12:01

a dark horse player to look out for that

12:04

potentially is a future San Francisco 49ers

12:06

in just a few days.

12:09

Today's episode of Lockdown 49ers is

12:11

brought to you by LinkedIn jobs. When

12:13

you're hiring for your small business, you

12:16

want to find quality professionals that

12:18

are not only right for the

12:21

role, but knowing that you had

12:24

cast the net you cast was

12:26

wide enough to find you that person that

12:28

is perfect for your role. That's why you

12:30

have to check out LinkedIn jobs. LinkedIn jobs

12:32

has the tools to help you find the

12:34

right professionals for your team faster and for

12:37

free. And LinkedIn isn't just some other job

12:39

board. I talked about that wide net. We're

12:41

talking about a billion

12:43

professionals that are on LinkedIn already. LinkedIn

12:45

helps you hire professionals you can't find

12:47

anywhere else, even those who aren't actively

12:49

searching for a new job, but might

12:51

be open to the perfect role. In

12:54

a given month, over 70% of LinkedIn

12:56

users don't visit other leading job sites.

12:58

So if you're looking on, if you're

13:00

not looking on LinkedIn, you're looking in

13:03

the wrong place. Post

13:06

your job for free at linkedin.com/locked

13:08

on the NFL. That's linkedin.com/locked on

13:11

NFL to post your job for

13:13

free terms and conditions apply. All

13:16

right, taking a look at these pre-draft

13:18

visits that the San Francisco 49ers have

13:20

been on and have had in house,

13:25

specifically a one very

13:27

high profile visit recently at the University

13:29

of Washington that I found

13:32

fascinating for multiple reasons and the prospects

13:34

that the 49ers have brought in. Now,

13:37

Mel Kiper, and we talked about this

13:39

already on the podcast, Mel Kiper had

13:41

a mock draft, a two rounder where

13:43

he gave the 49ers Washington office to

13:45

tackle Roger Rosengarden. And then in

13:47

the second round, Andrew Phillips, a speedy

13:50

cornerback out of Kentucky. And

13:53

Mel Kiper is more of a what am

13:55

I hearing guy than a than a film

13:57

guy and Kiper's, you know, the OGs. been

14:00

doing this since we were born, right? This

14:03

is before we were born. In fact, 1970, I think he was

14:05

talking about recently, 1978, I think was the first

14:08

draft that Kuiper did.

14:10

Uh, and then he started working at ESPN and he's

14:12

been doing the blue book. And so he's been doing

14:14

this a long time. He watched a lot of college

14:16

football, but he knows so many people. And

14:19

it's a lot of it is about stuff that he's

14:21

hearing. So he put Roger Rosengarten in

14:23

the first round. I thought that was really curious. And

14:25

then you start to peel it back a little bit.

14:28

And you, and you realize

14:30

that Roger Rosengarten played in high school

14:33

under head coach Ed

14:35

McCaffrey. And now he's working out pre-draft

14:37

with Joe Staley. And then

14:40

like a day after

14:42

Kuiper put Rosengarten in his mock,

14:44

you see John Lynch and offensive line

14:46

coach Chris first are at the university

14:49

of Washington working out those

14:51

guys and, um, the,

14:55

the, and John Lynch is so

14:57

all in. He's wearing, he's wearing Washington

14:59

to get a Stanford guy, that's like

15:05

rock going to football practice, wearing

15:07

a warrior's Jersey. You know what

15:09

I mean? Stanford

15:11

guy, he was wearing a

15:13

Washington Huskies hoodie. It's

15:15

like, dude, you must really love these dudes. Or it

15:17

was just freezing and you didn't bring your coat. Yeah.

15:20

They're like, here's some hoodies. Cause Chris first, I was

15:22

wearing one as well. They're like, Oh man, I thought

15:24

the sun was out. It's like, you know, when you

15:26

go to a Giants game and it's like sunny during

15:28

the day, so you see a lot of people from

15:30

out of town and they got their shorts on the

15:32

shorts, these shirts, they go to the giant, the sun

15:34

goes down and then they're freezing. I mean, it's

15:36

amazing how much money the San Francisco Giants have

15:39

probably made selling like blankets and jackets to people

15:41

who didn't realize how cold it was going to

15:43

get in the evening. When I like that, the

15:45

prices go up. I like your chart

15:47

that you're trying to give them the benefits out,

15:49

but everyone knows when you go to the Pacific,

15:51

Pacific Northwest, you're getting better.

15:54

You ever more, except for those,

15:56

you know, June. July,

16:01

beautiful, one of the more beautiful places to

16:03

be. Outside of that, you're

16:05

bringing your coat. He did

16:07

that because he wanted to. Yeah.

16:10

And if he wanted to, he must really like

16:12

to- Stir it up. He just

16:14

stirred it. They've got two offensive

16:16

linemen, Troy Feltano, who the 49ers might have

16:18

to trade up to get played left tackle

16:21

for the University of Washington. And then the

16:23

aforementioned Roger Rosengarten, who I think is more

16:25

of a day two guy, second, third

16:28

round, even potentially player. Maybe

16:30

the 49ers like him in the first round. Maybe the 49ers

16:32

might want to move up to try to get Troy Feltano,

16:34

or maybe he could slide to the 49ers there. But

16:37

remember, Michael Peddix was a lefty quarterback. So

16:39

the right tackle, who Rosengarten was, his blindside

16:41

protector in

16:43

college. So those

16:45

are two names I think make a lot of sense for the 49ers.

16:48

Offensive tackles could stick a

16:50

tackle in the NFL. Either guy could

16:53

potentially play guard as well. But

16:56

you would think that the 49ers, with

16:58

the exception of Mike McGlinchie, who they were really

17:01

secretive about and didn't bring him in for a

17:03

visit, there's been a lot of

17:05

crossover between these visits and players the 49ers have

17:07

drafted. So this was a visit at the Washington

17:09

campus. I want to talk about some other players.

17:11

Go ahead, Krav. Did

17:15

they ever bring in Macmillan for a visit? I

17:20

don't know. I'm just, he's at Washington. It

17:22

was just a thought. The other, the receiver,

17:24

the wide receiver? No, I don't think

17:27

so. Here, guys, I got the list. Courtesy

17:29

of Steph Sanchez at Steph49k. I

17:32

had her on the OTSBP podcast and we talked about some

17:34

of these things. And we thought it

17:36

was curious that the 49ers haven't really been bringing in

17:38

and having visits with a lot of offensive linemen. Well

17:40

then, boom, there goes the Washington visit. They were at

17:43

the University of Washington. And now, today,

17:45

in fact- So which Washington offensive

17:47

linemen? Both

17:50

of them. They're both there. I mean,

17:52

who visited with the 30 visits? No, no,

17:54

no. So they, the Niners went to them.

17:56

The Niners went to Washington. So it doesn't

17:58

count, right? Doesn't count as a- 30 visit

18:00

because that was a, that was like a sort

18:02

of a private workout situation. And

18:05

I think both Roger Rosengarten and

18:07

Troy Foutano were involved

18:09

in that. I know for sure Rosengarten

18:11

was. Um, and

18:14

then today, currently right

18:16

now, in fact, might still be in

18:19

Santa Clara. Okay. That I've talked

18:21

about a lot that fits for the 49ers

18:23

in that late first round, maybe second round

18:26

area is Kingsley Suo Mataia out of BYU.

18:29

And a school's cousin, he's, he's

18:31

in Santa Clara today on

18:33

a 30 visit today being Tuesday,

18:36

uh, on a 30 visit with the 49ers,

18:38

see on Iwaki, a safety from Utah was

18:40

also there, and so they're bringing more and

18:42

more guys in. So of

18:44

the players that are late first round

18:46

sort of prospects, the 49ers have had

18:49

those private visits either

18:51

elsewhere or in Santa

18:54

Clara, Roger

18:56

Rosengarten Kingsley Suo Mataia.

18:59

Uh, and then let me see, I'm going to go down the

19:01

list here. I'll

19:03

read off all the names that have,

19:05

that have had confirmed 30 visits so

19:07

far. So Suo Mataia, uh, Sionevaki today,

19:09

there was a Tatum Bethune who is

19:11

a late round guy, linebacker out of

19:14

Florida state. Eric all Iowa tied

19:16

in, you know how the 49ers love their Iowa

19:18

tied in more of a day three guy, uh,

19:21

apparently they've met with him multiple times, not just on

19:23

a 30 visit, uh, Camarian de

19:25

Camarian Richardson, a very fast Mississippi state

19:27

cornerback, more of a, you know, fourth

19:30

round sort of a, a player. They

19:32

had a formal interview at the combine.

19:34

Also a 30 visit Michael Hall, Jr.

19:37

Defensive tackle from Ohio state had a

19:39

30 visit last week. Evan Anderson sort

19:42

of a, you know, an undrafted free agent type of a

19:44

guy had a 30 visit Jamal Hill

19:47

fast undersized Oregon linebacker, also more

19:49

of an undrafted type seventh round, late

19:51

ground type of a guy, uh,

19:54

the, he was in for a 30 visit,

19:56

Kayden Wallace Penn state offensive tackle before

19:58

these last two meetings. With the

20:00

Washington guys in Sumo Ahta, Kaitlyn Wallace

20:02

is the only 30-visit offensive lineman the 49ers

20:04

had. And he's

20:06

potentially more of a guard

20:09

type of a player. Think Spencer

20:11

Burford, fourth-rounder is Kaitlyn Wallace. Andrew

20:13

Phillips, who was also in Kuyper's

20:15

mock to the 49ers, Jevon Baker,

20:17

UCF wide receiver, Brandon Dorless, more

20:19

of a day two, sort

20:22

of a big end interior pass rusher

20:24

out of Oregon, Malachi Corley,

20:27

next to Deebo Samuel, is what a lot of people call him

20:30

out of Western Kentucky. He was on a

20:32

30-visit, Brandon Rice, Jerry Rice's kid. Top

20:35

30 visit there for Brandon Rice, and then

20:37

Shao Wade Smith, a corner out of Washington

20:39

state. And one of the most

20:41

interesting names, I think, is edge

20:44

rusher, Marshawn Neeland, out of

20:46

Western Michigan, who every

20:48

draft analyst right now is just saying the teams love

20:50

this guy. And they're talking up and up and up

20:52

and talking like he's going to be the name that

20:54

people are surprised about that goes in the first round.

20:56

49ers had him on a 30-visit too. So

20:59

basically, Rosengarden, Suomata

21:01

Ia, and Marshawn Neeland, if the 49ers

21:03

are going to draft the guy at 31 that

21:07

came on a private visit

21:10

to Santa Clara, it's

21:12

going to be one of those three guys. So

21:14

I have a question. So let me just speak,

21:16

again, voice of the fan over here. I'm sure a lot

21:18

of fans are listening to this. They're like me. They don't

21:21

do the research like you guys do, right? When it comes

21:23

to these college prospects and stuff like that, we get to

21:25

the draft and we're like, let's go. Tell

21:28

me who I'm going to start rooting for as a 49er fan. So

21:30

I'd love to know how

21:32

many in the past, maybe 5, 10 years, how

21:35

many of these visits of these 30s do

21:37

actually get drafted by the 49ers,

21:39

right? Is it a very low percentage?

21:41

Do any of them actually get drafted?

21:43

Is this something that maybe they do to throw

21:45

off their scent of where they actually want to

21:47

go? I'm

21:51

going to answer that question on the other side.

21:53

That's a fantastic question, Wink. There's

21:55

a lot of answers to what matters and

21:57

what doesn't about the private visits that they

21:59

do. the 49ers and other teams and every team

22:01

is very different around the NFL and how much

22:04

those things matter. We'll get into that. And

22:06

plus my dark horse name to watch out for 49ers that

22:08

we have not mentioned yet. This

22:11

episode of locked on 49ers is brought to

22:13

22:21

can pull out that win. And

22:23

that's when you dig deep. You lift your head up and you

22:25

say to yourself, it's time to get back

22:27

22:30

22:32

take as much of my friends money as

22:34

I possibly can. That's right. We're

23:22

So weak to answer your question about

23:24

the visits and the private visits. The

23:27

only first round pick the 49ers have drafted

23:29

in the Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch era that

23:31

did not visit is Mike McGlitch. So

23:34

that's the only one and they were purposely trying

23:36

to be boy there. And according to reports after

23:39

the draft, the Raiders actually wanted McGlinchie Niners took

23:41

him one pick ahead. They ended up drafting Colt

23:43

Miller who's actually ended up being a better player

23:45

took some time to develop there, but ended up

23:47

being a good player at left tackle for, uh,

23:50

for the Raiders. And I think they were purposely

23:52

staying away because they loved them. I think they

23:54

visited with them at the combine. They're blown away

23:56

by them. They fit. He was a good run

23:58

blocker. Kyle Shanahan liked them. this one quiet not

24:00

bring him in the 49ers could absolutely be be doing

24:03

that at 31 And

24:06

real quick in that same draft they

24:09

Had two visits not one but

24:11

two women can dispatch it. Yeah

24:14

And that could speak more to Nick's smoke

24:16

screen. Yeah. Yeah, so the

24:19

49ers could be right now It's lying

24:21

season, right? So it could

24:23

be And which ties

24:25

into my dark horse player for the 49ers the

24:30

Matt Barrows just came out with his draft crush. It's a

24:32

wide receiver Go read about

24:34

that in the athletic Matt. My oko just started talking

24:36

about wide receiver possibly at the end of round one

24:39

Your shreger who has some you know, pretty

24:42

good sources around the league He put lad

24:44

mcconkey in his mock draft today to the

24:46

49ers to pick 31 so all

24:48

of a sudden this this This feels like

24:50

a smokescreen because it's all at once and somebody's

24:53

talking to somebody all of a sudden seen a

24:55

lot of wide receivers 49ers at 31. It's certainly

24:57

possible. I think trade and I uke makes it

24:59

a lot more possible But if you go look

25:01

at those visits the 49ers are visiting with day

25:03

two day three types at those positions Which is where

25:05

I expect them to attack wide receiver and I do

25:08

think they will come out of this draft with a

25:10

wide receiver But

25:13

to answer your question it matters and it doesn't

25:15

like last year they they brought in Jair Brown

25:17

for a visit and Ended up trading up to

25:19

get him. They've had a visit with With

25:23

both tight they visited with every tight end just

25:25

about in the entire draft and they ended up

25:27

drafting I think they did

25:29

have both lots you and Willis in

25:31

pre draft So generally they have drafted

25:33

pretty heavy based on the guys they

25:35

brought in for visits But the one

25:37

obvious exception was the one smokescreen. They

25:40

didn't bring in purposely was Mike And

25:50

so But they don't

25:52

visit with so few guys are as far

25:54

they've met with a lot of these guys

25:56

combined elsewhere They've been at pro day or

25:59

the 30 visits in and obviously

26:01

that one private workout they had in Washington.

26:04

They haven't done a lot of those visits

26:07

with players that are being projected to go in the range where

26:09

the 49ers are picking in Ramon. I

26:13

think the big thing there too is when you're looking at,

26:15

it's the smokescreen and this and that and you go back

26:17

to the Minka and that

26:22

whole situation, they were picking

26:25

like ninth overall. So

26:27

there's a guy that you really have that's high

26:29

on your board right then and there's only so

26:31

many guys that can go perform. You just don't

26:33

want someone to leapfrog you and get into that

26:35

eighth spot. So you have to be a little

26:37

bit more discreet with how you move. Pick

26:40

31, there's so much out of your control.

26:42

A guy might go 10 picks before and

26:45

it's not until like the last few picks where

26:48

maybe it matters if a guy is a little bit more

26:50

under the wrap. So you don't have

26:52

a team jump up and still a guy that

26:54

you really like which we've seen mapping. But I'd

26:56

say when you're picking at 31, I

26:59

think you can be more out in

27:01

the open even if it's a guy

27:03

you like and not as worried as

27:05

a potential top 10 pick like McGlinchy

27:07

was. Yeah, right. Go

27:10

ahead, Wink. Well, I was just

27:12

going to say, yeah, at 31, you're sitting there waiting, right?

27:14

It's out of your control who these other people are taking

27:16

and I'm sure that they're always doing their homework, right? About

27:19

like, okay, we actually really like that guy. He's still there

27:21

at 25. Here's what we

27:23

got to do to trade up. Get somebody on the

27:25

phone. Let's see what we can do, right? And that's

27:27

that's probably why they're meeting with so many different guys

27:29

right now. But again, doing

27:32

so McGlinchy is the only first one. So they

27:34

met with Iuke back in the day too. I

27:36

mean, this is something that the 49ers have just

27:38

been doing. They usually draft. Okay, I love that.

27:40

I love knowing about this sort of thing going

27:42

in because now you can if you are kind

27:44

of the casual draft fan like myself, you can

27:46

go and look at that list that you read

27:48

and be like, okay, it's more than likely the

27:50

49ers are going to find one of these guys.

27:53

Yeah, and it's not every guy so it's not,

27:55

you know, a rule necessarily and they definitely draft

27:57

guys every year that they didn't bring in for.

28:00

30 visits and sometimes they just need more

28:02

to complete the evaluation. Some of it is like

28:04

one of the, one of the guys that visited

28:06

was like, he got arrested at some point for

28:08

some kind of assault or whatever. It's like, maybe

28:10

you're just trying to check off the

28:12

character box for a prospect. And you know, that you

28:15

might want to draft from the seventh round or sign

28:17

as an undrafted free agent or,

28:19

you know, just complete an evaluation that's incomplete

28:21

for whatever reason, um, maybe a

28:23

small school guy, you didn't get to the pro day. So you

28:25

want to bring him in instead. And so there's a lot of

28:27

different reasons. And it doesn't mean you love a guy that you

28:30

brought him in. It doesn't mean you're going to draft them and

28:32

not everybody they draft, they going to bring in, but I

28:34

think it gives you a good idea, especially

28:37

positionally. And so that's why I think, okay,

28:39

they're bringing in some guys late. They could

28:41

be offensive lineman in that first second

28:43

round range. They've visited

28:45

with a whole bunch of corners, but more mid round

28:47

guys. They visited with a whole bunch of linebackers, but

28:49

late round guys. So that's where I would expect them.

28:51

I think that's where they're looking at the players. I

28:54

think that's kind of the thing I mean, like last

28:56

year, it was like, oh, they love tight end, they're

28:58

going to draft the tight end, they drafted too. Cause

29:00

they brought in so many tight ends and visited them

29:02

with them in every way possible. So that's what I

29:04

think the biggest hints of it. So if I'm, if

29:06

I had to guess, they're probably going to draft an

29:08

offensive or defensive lineman in round one or round two

29:10

probably could have a wide receiver in round two, I

29:12

think they're going to look at more

29:14

nickels type corners in the mid rounds of the

29:16

draft. And I think there might, you know, drafted

29:18

day three linebacker day three tied in. Uh,

29:21

that that's, those are, that's what they're looking at. So

29:23

that's what it tells me. So

29:25

that's the, that's the loose plan. I think for the

29:27

49ers, you guys would get me

29:30

excited for this draft, man. I wish it was here

29:32

this week, the player that everyone

29:34

needs to prepare for in this

29:36

NFL draft is a wide

29:39

receiver. And

29:41

it's not AD Mitchell, which is

29:43

Barrows draft crush. It's his teammate

29:45

Xavier worthy. The dude

29:48

ran four to one guys, Kyle

29:51

Shanahan's, all my mater, his

29:53

buddy, Steve Sarkeesian's the

29:55

coach and Cal. She

29:58

has been sniffing around the university. Texas, apparently,

30:00

and has been on campus and been

30:02

in the building there and Steve start

30:04

teasing his friend. And you

30:06

know how Kyle Shanahan trusts his

30:10

friends to give him the

30:12

real information on prospects. And that's why it's

30:14

really easy to draw a

30:16

compare draw line to Roger

30:19

Rosengarten, Ed McCaffrey, currently

30:22

being coached up for the draft with Joe Staley,

30:24

right? He's gonna have a really good idea of

30:26

who this guy is. And he'll probably

30:28

lean on these people that he knows and trusts

30:30

for them to give him a strong

30:32

killer character evaluation. And I think it'll be

30:34

the same with these Texas wide receivers. He

30:37

always likes having a really fast wide receiver on

30:39

the roster. Danny Gray hasn't quite worked out. I

30:43

think people should be prepared for a shocking name,

30:45

you know, whether it's Marshawn Kneeland out of Western

30:48

Michigan, and not a lot of people have talked

30:50

about in the pre draft lead up or maybe

30:52

Rosengarten going around earlier than people think or Dark

30:56

Horse named watch and this guy might not even get

30:58

to 31. I did a mock draft this morning on

31:00

the peacock and Williamson NFL show I put Xavier worthy

31:02

24 to the Dallas Cowboys. I feel like the Cowboys

31:05

move to draft the four to receiver. Xavier

31:08

worthy when you run that fast, you're gonna go

31:10

higher than people expect. He

31:12

might be the fun name on

31:14

Thursday night that people are like, Oh, wow, Xavier

31:16

worthy went there. And who knows it might be

31:18

the San Francisco 49ers. And I

31:20

think Xavier worthy too, because you talked about,

31:22

you know, caution and wanting a fast guy

31:25

on his roster. He's had Marquis good when

31:27

he drafted Danny Gray. And now we're talking

31:29

about, you know, potentially Xavier worthy, worthy.

31:31

When you

31:34

draft worthy, in the

31:36

first round, your expectations are different than

31:38

when you draft Danny Gray, at

31:41

the end of the third round. Yeah, for Travis,

31:43

but any Danny Gray will more like, hey, man,

31:45

kind of like some of the skill set that

31:47

he has to see if it can kind of

31:49

come together. If so, this would be a really

31:51

good one of our mid round picks. Xavier

31:54

worthy you drafting him there. It's all right,

31:56

let's get this guy rolling right now. in

32:00

and be a guy play you play off of these

32:02

two guys we already have. But this is your role

32:04

and we want you to come in and be able

32:06

to do that day once. So different

32:08

expectations depending on where you drafted. So

32:11

do we think if the 49ers do spend

32:13

that late first round pick on a wide

32:15

receiver that this affects the Brandon IU contract

32:18

negotiations going forward? I think it

32:20

would be it could.

32:23

But I think it's more about let's get a

32:25

guy in. So he's ready to go next year

32:27

when one of those one of our two top

32:30

two receivers is probably not going to be here

32:32

anymore. And that's what I think

32:34

it's more about. And by the way, worthy did

32:36

have a 75 yard return touchdown. The return game

32:38

might be a bigger factor. All you need is

32:40

this much of a gap if you got 42

32:42

speed to house it on the new kickoff rules.

32:44

Could that be a factor? The

32:48

character stuff croc you you had some insight on this

32:50

right because you know some folks that know worthy like

32:53

he gets high marks. That's why I

32:55

think it might be one of those situations and he out

32:57

produced a D Mitchell by the way in

32:59

college. He was a better receiver had better

33:01

numbers than than a D Mitchell. So his

33:03

team thought he was the better guy and

33:05

who the coach Steve Kerr. I don't want

33:07

to quite say that's what it means because

33:09

you can have better numbers. Does that mean

33:11

you're gonna be the better prospect? Earlier

33:14

today I was running sprints with my

33:16

guy LaVille Hawkins. When LaVille was at

33:18

Cal Berkeley, you know, and if you

33:20

if you type his name in and see how some of the

33:22

fans that man, they speak highly of the bill. He

33:25

led the team and receiving his

33:27

teammate was the Sean Jackson. Yeah, he was

33:29

not gonna be drafted before the Sean Jackson.

33:31

Sean Jackson is the comp for Xavier worthy.

33:34

And a lot of people think

33:36

of like when you think of somebody that runs

33:38

really fast and Jackson. Interestingly

33:41

enough, his 40 time wasn't

33:43

amazing. His play his game speed

33:45

that get live blazing.

33:47

I mean, you saw that anytime you touch

33:50

the bar cow in

33:52

a field just how he was just different. It was

33:54

very clear. So maybe you didn't know how to run

33:56

a 40 maybe you just had a bad day. But

33:58

it clearly was a lot. faster than the four

34:00

four one, which is fast, but he's still he was

34:02

faster than that. But

34:05

having him as a comp makes a lot

34:07

of sense. Not the biggest guy, the John

34:09

Jackson, around five, ten, five, eleven, hundred sixty

34:11

five pounds coming out of college. Not

34:14

sure if he ever touched the weight. You know,

34:16

he's one of those guys and worthy on the

34:18

slender side. But I have had guys that have

34:20

been around him. You know,

34:22

he played some tournaments for my organization,

34:24

you know, Elevate 209. And

34:28

everyone raves about best

34:30

best best receiver I've ever been around. And we've

34:33

had a lot of good talent come

34:35

through the program and it was

34:37

just the best I've seen, the best.

34:41

There you go. What kind of person he is. I

34:43

never asked those questions. So maybe I can get

34:45

some intel on that. Wink,

34:51

wouldn't that be fun? Ninety nine. Well,

34:54

a hundred, they go to a hundred now in Madden, right?

34:56

A hundred speed on that. That

34:58

was the first Hester Hester was the

35:00

first hundred speed guy. Yeah. And

35:04

now who has it? Just Tyree kill. Mean anybody else?

35:07

They kind of straight away from giving guys

35:09

that like, but you would assume

35:11

that Tyree has that. That's

35:14

how he plays. Wink, thanks for

35:16

joining the show. As always, we got

35:18

one more. I want you to give

35:20

us your draft crush next week. So,

35:23

uh, I don't know how hard you've

35:25

been, you've been grinding the tape, but

35:27

if you've like gathered from all the

35:29

information, preparing for the draft, watching the 49ers,

35:32

if you have a guy or maybe a draft plan,

35:34

I want to, I want to hear what your draft

35:36

crush is next Wednesday as we get ready for this

35:38

2024 NFL draft. I

35:40

got, I got one question too, and we can leave with

35:43

this and we can maybe address it next Wednesday, but,

35:45

uh, I saw it come across my timeline

35:48

on Twitter and then, and must

35:50

be a bangers fan. He said

35:52

Chad Johnson, AJ green, Jamar chase

35:54

name 18 with three better all

35:56

time receivers. than

36:00

whoever the heck you wanted three. But

36:02

there's some good one. Chris Carter, Randy Moss,

36:04

Justin Jefferson. There's some 49er fans that try

36:07

to throw Randy Moss in there. I'm like,

36:09

oh, thank you. I think he has to

36:11

be like the prime of

36:13

that player. Because

36:16

Philadelphia, they're not claiming Chris Carter. I've never

36:18

seen the way he plays. Eric Parker's all-time

36:20

team when we drafted, where he's taking all

36:22

the one-year wonders for the 49ers and putting

36:24

them on his feet right. Deion Sanders, all-time

36:26

great 49er. All-time.

36:30

Thank you, buddy, for making this

36:32

your first listen here on the

36:34

36:37
