It is smokescreen season for the NFL Draft,

0:09

he had to say here today on

1:05

out of the way. It's smokescreen

1:07

season. It's Tuesday, April 16, 2024. GM's lie

1:09

all the time. They're

1:12

going to tell you out in the open what they

1:14

want you to hear to manipulate the events of the

1:16

NFL draft as much as they possibly can to get

1:18

the most favorable outcome for them. I

1:21

understand that. I also don't care. Chris

1:24

Greer spoke with the media. I thought he had

1:26

some really interesting things to say whether they're factual

1:28

statements or not. Some of them are draft ideology.

1:32

Some of them he came straight out and said, we have

1:34

no reason to lie to you. Yes,

1:36

the intent is to exercise the

1:38

fifth year options for both jail and bottle

1:40

and jail and Phillips, which is

1:43

a big time dub for the dolphins. Ideally, you

1:45

get long term contract extensions with both of those

1:47

players done before they have

1:49

to play on their fifth year options. But

1:51

nevertheless, these are

1:54

good players that the dolphins have drafted. You

1:56

take advantage of the fifth year option.

2:00

You could sign a contract extension with either one and in theory

2:02

have it added to the back end after the fifth year option takes

2:05

place. And

2:08

so the Philadelphia Eagles did with Devonta Smith and his

2:10

contract as well. So

2:15

lots of different ways that you can go about utilizing the fifth year

2:17

as a tool beyond just you're going to play on it and then

2:19

leave like what happened with Christian Wilkins. Okay, so he said, you know,

2:21

I no reason to lie to you.

2:23

Yes, the intent is to pick up both of those fifth year

2:25

options, which is a good thing. They talked about the two and

2:28

talking about low contract extension. That's

2:31

not really where we're going to

2:33

have our focus now, which

2:36

is also what it sounds like for for Miami

2:38

continuing on going to negotiations with two and his

2:40

team of representation. But the focus right now within

2:42

the football operations is in the draft. We

2:47

had some good questions that were asked in

2:50

the presser today that I thought gave some really insightful

2:52

observations and answers from Chris Prett. Observations

2:55

in an answer from Chris Greer as far

2:57

as how this team operates, what this team

2:59

does, how why this team approaches the draft

3:01

the way that it does. And

3:04

Chris Greer was asked, I believe, by

3:06

Marcel Louis Jacques from ESPN about

3:10

what the timeline and

3:12

process looks like for

3:14

trading up or down in the

3:16

draft. And Chris Greer

3:18

had his own answers there that we will share

3:20

here and now and give you my reaction on

3:23

lockdown. Yes, some of

3:25

those conversations are happening now, you know, where

3:27

teams call and say, hey, would you be

3:29

willing to move down or move up? So

3:33

for the most part, if a deal is too

3:35

good to pass up, you would pull the

3:37

trigger now because you never know what those

3:39

opportunities come and go. But

3:43

usually it's mostly on a draft day because

3:45

people want to see if the players that

3:47

are interested are still there. If someone has

3:49

specifically targeted one or two players. And again,

3:52

it also could go at the depths of that position. There may

3:54

be two players that are positioned they like in the first round.

3:57

One's gone and so a team wants to come up and

3:59

get them. Oh. Aren't

4:02

you a question? is is draft day

4:04

But now we've had discussions with these

4:06

about moving up and down, them calling

4:08

us and so it's It's been a

4:10

typical draft week. So.

4:13

Odd Couple interesting things here. Ah to

4:15

see my need. Not surprised that they

4:18

are holding these conversations now. Ah, for

4:20

a team that. Are. Two years

4:22

ago. traded out of three, back to twelve.

4:24

What? Three years ago, traded from three to

4:26

twelve, back to six, all in one fell

4:28

swoop. That happened in March. But.

4:31

Up and down in in point of the conversation.

4:33

yeah I think it is much more feasible that

4:35

were Miami where to be moving. Down.

4:38

And it is to move up and part of

4:40

that is why is is based off of the

4:42

next thing that Chris shared that will talk about

4:45

here are in just a moment as far as

4:47

how the dolphins board lox. But.

4:49

Some. I. Thought

4:51

the the scenario that he provided.

4:53

Second, talking about the depth of

4:56

a position. Or. Is a particularly

4:58

interesting one. Entered the a dangerous way to play

5:00

the game. right? Because that

5:02

that feels like. It's.

5:04

What happened to the dolphins with the leave?

5:06

My Kimber selection back? And Twenty Twenty One.

5:09

If. You know the dolphins had the city's pig. Ah,

5:11

they come through the make their

5:13

draft choices you've on Holland or

5:16

the Tevin Jenkins pick comes in.

5:18

There's a little mini pseudo run

5:20

on offensive linemen in in that

5:22

early portion. Of. The second

5:24

round and in Miami does the trade up

5:26

with the New York Giants. To. Draft:

5:28

leave My Cupboard and that felt like it

5:31

was the last player that they had had

5:33

graded in a certain stratosphere. Of

5:35

players right or wrong. To.

5:38

Go up where they had yet miami, pick thirty

5:40

six Lane, and Dickerson comes off the board at

5:42

thirty seven. And then Tevin

5:44

Jenkins comes off the board at thirty nine.

5:47

The. Dolphins then two picks later traded

5:49

up to forty two. To. Draft

5:51

I can bargain that spot so that is

5:53

a real life embodiment. Of. That

5:55

approach. In. Miami in a

5:57

perfect world if you're entertaining trading

5:59

down. Out of twenty one. Ah,

6:02

You would have somebody else that

6:04

is approaching their draft selection process.

6:06

In. That school of thought. But that is.

6:09

A. Little bit more of a dangerous way

6:11

to play the game because you're now more pooling

6:13

multiple assets. Into a singular pick.

6:16

Which Miami? Of course I

6:18

took Pyxis D and a

6:20

future three. They go up

6:22

eight spots and land. A.

6:24

Presumably what they felt with the

6:26

last offensive lineman. We did a

6:28

specific here of players that they

6:30

were interested in pursuing, so I

6:32

was. I thought it was need

6:34

to hear Chris referred to that

6:36

specific kind of scenario. He's obviously

6:38

not specifically referring to that individual

6:40

transaction or or or dominoes series

6:42

of down of ads. In. An

6:45

actual draft, But that was the first thing that came to

6:47

my mind as far as. Or. I've

6:49

seen Miami approach it that

6:51

way. And it's less about.

6:54

Are being right or wrong with

6:56

the decision? Because I think Miami

6:58

and will ultimately. You'd.

7:01

Love. To have nailed one of the other players

7:03

down. On. Or

7:06

you could drafted create humphrey rice

7:09

as as a center. Ah, But.

7:11

It's hard to say what their original plan was

7:13

in Twenty Twenty One. For. Liam was

7:16

it to be at tackle. And all he

7:18

was originally attack when he first came to the team.

7:20

And. The tackles the kind of came after

7:23

that were Walker Little and Jackson. Car mean

7:25

and same cause me and know you don't

7:27

really love any those players either Jail and

7:29

Mayfield his be accurate a catastrophic player so

7:32

if they've I waited him as a tackle.

7:34

They were right to. Put. Their

7:36

tips in that basket, but the evaluation of

7:38

him being a tackle. I was

7:41

the incorrect element of that series

7:43

of events, but. Here. In Chris,

7:45

talk about moving up or down. Those conversations

7:47

happening Now if you get a sweetheart offer

7:49

you take it. I think that

7:51

that's particularly interesting as well. Ah,

7:54

But the vast majority of them do indeed

7:56

happen on draft night spicy this close to

7:58

the draft. And. Miami not pick the

8:00

at or near the top. Where.

8:02

There's shuffling that's going to be

8:04

happening in anticipation of of securing

8:06

a quarterback. So. Thought

8:09

that was good ideological insight as far

8:11

as the process of trading up or

8:13

down on what it looks like about

8:15

how how is it facilitate. Ah,

8:17

that is next our next focus

8:19

here on this episode of Locked

8:21

On Dolphins To stick with. Today's

8:27

episode of Locked On Dolphins is sponsored

8:29

9:06

Was asked about.

9:09

How The board? They're expecting the boar to fall to

9:11

them in. This is where I think it is important

9:13

to acknowledge that if you smoke screen season right. He.

9:16

Said we do feel and anticipate that we

9:18

will have one to two players that we

9:21

really like that we think could be impact

9:23

starters for us. At take number

9:25

twenty one, with how the board is

9:27

expected to fall, that is noteworthy, but

9:29

not really something I put a lot

9:32

of value in because if Miami's already

9:34

having conversations about going up or down

9:36

the board, you don't want it to

9:38

be known that sure. Boxed into a

9:40

corner and you feel like you're picking

9:42

at a spot. We. Don't

9:45

feel like you're having committed to value for the

9:47

pick that you're picking because if that were the

9:49

case, a team that wants you to trade up

9:51

with them. Would. Say well. We.

9:53

Know you don't like any your players. We know you're

9:56

desperate to get out. It's.

9:58

Gonna cost you more because we. The

10:00

know what your positioning is relative to

10:02

your board. You want to get a

10:04

player that's that's worth your book. Your.

10:06

Your. Pack. So. Come yet

10:08

one. And. If you're trying to go down.

10:11

A team would say well we know you're out of

10:13

players. That. Are you feel

10:15

like are worth that? Takes so. Why

10:18

should we pay a premium price? Or

10:21

to help you out when we know that

10:23

the board has dried up already vs players

10:25

that you feel are appropriate. I've picked. That.

10:29

Wasn't the interesting part. The. Interesting

10:31

part was when Chris Grew was ass

10:33

specifically about the Dolphins draft board and

10:35

the number of first round picks. At

10:38

the team had currently. On

10:40

the board. They. Look at the other

10:42

we feel they'll be. We deathly feel the

10:45

will be one or two players that we

10:47

really like. There is where we are right

10:49

now. We feel. That

10:52

we can get an Impact player there that will

10:54

help our team and roster. and now we be

10:56

very excited to add So we've gone through a

10:58

few times. will keep going through a hero you

11:00

know, but we feel good about who would be

11:02

there. twenty one if if we were to pick

11:04

their. Spirits am at least coin

11:06

one first round. Great said that. Now

11:08

is it You know it gives you

11:10

ask that question because you know I'll add

11:13

stolen guys as strongly. First the now

11:15

as a right now we do not

11:17

have twenty one first rounder and but are

11:19

we feel that. Again when

11:21

teams are building for their roster teams

11:23

are look in different days so we

11:25

talked every team in a museum at

11:27

fifteen to twenty range on players and

11:29

now but it varies from t routine

11:32

what I was looking for. From.

11:35

Fifteen to twenty first round grades the norm,

11:37

and for whatever reason you get the April

11:39

and in the draft world in the draft

11:41

realm as a long time draft Next, this

11:43

debate pops up every single year where an

11:46

analyst will share the amount of first rung

11:48

raise that they have and somebody does can't

11:50

help themselves or chime in on be like.

11:52

At. Ridiculous. There's thirty two first round picks. How

11:54

do you not have thirty two for shock fades?

11:57

But as a different story, being a top thirty

11:59

two player, Which. Would mean we feel

12:01

you are going to go in the first

12:03

round. Verses are

12:05

you actually worth in isolation you

12:08

within individual player. Are.

12:10

You worth the top ten pick are you are the first

12:12

round pick? Our. With your resume as

12:14

it pertains to us integrating right here.

12:17

So. It's kind of need to hear Chris. Say

12:20

the quiet part out loud. As far as

12:22

when you are draft nick like that, the

12:24

beat comes up for whatever reason every

12:26

single year. but I've talked a while as

12:28

have been. Grading is often sublime in and

12:31

wide receivers. In the past two days on

12:33

the show, we've revealed final position rankings for

12:35

those two positions graded specifically against the

12:37

Dolphins office. And. That's

12:39

why the field is maybe a little

12:42

bit more narrow. The

12:44

what it currently is case of Way I

12:46

have fifteen first round grades or my boardwalk

12:48

rating. For. The Dolphins from

12:50

their office of in Defensive Schemes. If.

12:53

You caught the shown which we went over

12:55

the do not trade away from list on.

12:59

Those players are largely the first round

13:01

grades that I have a signed on.

13:03

it doesn't include. One. Quarterback that

13:05

I gave it radio for from Gray to which

13:07

was Caleb Williams. Ah and one

13:09

linebacker with an injury history and paint Wilson

13:12

who got a for from rate for me

13:14

but I just our quickly read through the

13:16

names. The top fifteen names that I have

13:18

graded are definitive first rung rates. I have

13:20

some late one early twos which is a

13:23

whole other subsection of like. Last.

13:25

Few pics of the first round First ten picks

13:27

for the second round and that would hypothetically be

13:29

or if you get a tree down for twenty

13:31

one because you're bored is empty. Those.

13:34

That would be the ranger looking to get

13:36

into to them pick from the town that's

13:38

available in that bucket because it's appropriate value

13:40

for where you are picky. But. Just

13:42

authentic. First. Round rates. Joe.

14:00

15 players that I have graded in this draft

14:02

class for Miami and those would be the guys

14:05

that I would have first round definitive Stone

14:07

cold lock first round grades on I

14:09

have others like Talise Waga Olaf Ashanu

14:11

JC late them Terry and Arnold Graham

14:13

Barton Gary Robinson Ricky Pearsall that

14:15

I have late one early twos on and there's

14:17

more than that but that's just to fill out

14:19

the names for you guys to give you guys

14:22

an idea of Who's like

14:25

at 21 you feel like you're getting appropriate value

14:27

versus hey Maybe we kicked down the board a little

14:29

bit because that well is empty And

14:31

for Chris to say we do not have

14:34

21 first round grades. It at least does open up

14:37

The possibility depending on how close it

14:39

is to 21 and how many quarterbacks

14:41

go like if they have 15

14:44

guys and there's four quarterbacks that go and all

14:46

15 other guys go you could live in a

14:48

world where dolphins get on the Board and say

14:50

we don't have a first round value on our

14:53

board. Let's get out of here Equally

14:57

Possible is there's other players that the

14:59

Dolphins don't really care about the criteria

15:01

as much as that make them The

15:04

players that they are that come off the

15:06

board before and the Dolphins get on the board and

15:08

there's five of their first round Grades are still left.

15:10

They could stay and pick or in theory they could

15:12

trade down. We've gone over that Theory

15:16

when going over the list of the guys

15:18

that I personally would not trade away from

15:20

but just a further Reinforcement

15:23

of that is it's coming from the

15:25

Dolphins general manager. This is how

15:27

we this is where we stand This is where

15:29

most teams stand as far as grading

15:31

for different criteria gives you different outcomes

15:33

in different boards and most

15:35

teams fall between this arbitrary range

15:39

15 to 20 players that they would individually

15:41

classify as first round picks and the Dolphins

15:43

are in that boat to some degree Because

15:46

he said we do not have 21 first round grade What

15:50

that ultimately means I have no reason to believe that

15:52

that is a smokescreen I think

15:54

that's an authentic answer Because

15:57

again, it's if everybody's criteria

16:00

is different, whether

16:02

we do or don't have 21 first round grades

16:04

is inconsequential. Because our criteria is

16:06

different than yours, so we have the players different and

16:09

it is going to nudge teams to

16:11

be motivated to go up or down the board or stay

16:13

and pay. Now

16:16

Chris Carr also talked about best

16:19

player available kind of being the school of thought

16:21

that they try to approach early

16:23

in the draft as compared to drafting for needs.

16:25

He was drafted out the edge guys with the

16:27

rehab. He was asked about

16:30

replacing Christian Wilkins. Pretty

16:32

emphatic that best player available. He was then asked about

16:34

a quarterback. Would you guys draft a quarterback? And he

16:36

says, we talked about picking best player available, but that's

16:38

not a position that I would be looking at in

16:41

the first round. But

16:43

we do look to add to every position

16:45

with depth. And

16:47

he was asked a really good question.

16:50

I believe it was from Chris Perkins

16:52

about the application, the best player available

16:54

ideology and we're getting into that to

16:56

bring us to a close here on

16:58

this episode of Locked on Dolphins. Buying

18:15

Greer I love this question because I'm

18:17

a nerd for this kind of stuff some

18:19

of you Might not be

18:21

or might not care, but you're here So I'm

18:24

again operating in the assumption that you do care

18:26

so please regard me as I kind of geek

18:29

out over the Application

18:31

of the best player available theory

18:34

Chris is generally pretty close to the vest

18:36

with his media availabilities I thought he gave

18:38

some really authentic genuine

18:40

answers here and this one

18:43

is gonna help me as

18:45

a somebody who works in this space continuing

18:49

to understand the how

18:51

and the why of How

18:53

teams approach various intersections of

18:56

the draft so here's Chris Greer on the

18:58

application of the best player available theory and

19:02

How it works and how deep into

19:04

the draft it works. Yeah. No, I

19:06

think the best player available and Again,

19:09

this is probably going back from you know

19:11

years I said when I started learned under

19:14

you know coach Parcells years ago and and

19:17

going through coach Carol He Nick

19:20

Saban and so so it's you

19:22

always stack your board and you work hard So

19:25

but your board obviously early in the draft

19:27

will always look kind of how you

19:29

set it in terms of best player But when

19:31

you get into the day three, you

19:33

know the boards it's being picked apart flying all

19:36

over the place So it's one of those And

19:40

I think sometimes you get late in the draft you

19:42

end up looking for for depth or the filling holes

19:44

in your roster But for the most

19:46

part I think most teams would be early in the draft

19:48

are always going to take the best players available for the

19:50

first couple rounds because That's

19:52

where you probably have the most control of

19:54

how your board looks in terms of how

19:56

you spent all the offseason ranking in terms

19:58

of all your time with the coaching

20:01

staff and scouts to build it. So

20:04

this is something that I've lived in real time because

20:06

as I did it for free agency and I've also

20:08

done for the draft and I did it for the

20:10

draft last year. It's called a

20:12

horizontal draft board where across

20:15

like reading left to right is

20:18

columns and the columns are

20:20

positions. There's quarterbacks and running backs and water

20:22

severs and tight ends and offensive tackles and

20:24

interior offensive line and interior defensive line and

20:26

edge linebacker corner and safety. That's the whole

20:28

left to right. But then

20:30

as you read top to bottom within each

20:32

individual column, that is the

20:36

order in which the players are graded and it's

20:38

it's it's tiered where it's it's

20:40

not just reading top

20:43

down. Although you can read it that way

20:45

to say here's my first-ranked quarterback my second-ranked

20:48

quarterback my third-ranked quarterback, but

20:50

because it also reads left to right

20:52

if my top-ranked wide receiver is a tier above

20:55

my top-ranked quarterback it will reflect that and I

20:57

can just look at the whole image and I

20:59

can see while there's a lot of

21:01

names stacked at the very tippy top in this position

21:03

group. But the first name that's available

21:05

at this position group is two tiers lower.

21:07

So it doesn't have the same value at

21:10

the top of the position versus this other

21:12

position in the draft and

21:16

hearing Chris talk about, you know, the first few

21:18

rounds is where you're kind of in control of

21:20

how the board and BPA actually looks is

21:22

a very real thing because it's free agency

21:24

starts happening. Just as an example,

21:27

I built one of these for free agency name

21:30

starts signing quickly and players are

21:32

signing big contracts quickly and all

21:34

of a sudden this tippy

21:36

top very top-heavy position group,

21:39

it's gone. And now

21:41

you're looking at at that position

21:43

group in theory defensive tackles

21:45

where you talk about Chris Jones and Christian Wilkins and

21:47

just a matter of week off the board and you

21:49

say wow, would this well

21:51

dried up pretty quick. So

21:54

best player available no longer in the conversation

21:56

there where you would thought had maybe coming

21:59

in it would be. especially if you're applying it

22:01

to the draft landscape. But then

22:03

to hear about how later in the draft,

22:05

you're addressing needs by filling holes and getting

22:07

more competition to step into roles. Day

22:10

three for me, at least through my personal

22:12

ideology had always been very skewed

22:14

towards special teams and

22:17

project players. The appeal

22:19

of a small school developmental

22:22

offensive lineman or corner that has

22:24

like the unteachable things, the physical

22:26

ability, whether it's a long physical

22:28

corner or it's an athletic offensive

22:30

lineman. You can't teach somebody to

22:32

be big in athletic. You can

22:34

teach them technique. So that

22:36

for me through my personal school of

22:39

thought, it's always been so much more

22:41

point of emphasis, go

22:43

get those kinds of players early on day three. And

22:46

then later on day three, get

22:48

your high motor, high effort, high

22:50

IQ, less physically talented players to

22:53

be your depth players and special teams players to

22:55

make sure that you have quality

22:57

competition on your special teams rosters as

22:59

well. And then you can let competition

23:03

play itself out and decide who you wanna make sure you're

23:05

committed to on your 52 throughout the course of that year.

23:08

So to hear you

23:10

address your holes in your roster a

23:12

little bit more by

23:16

being proactive for where your roster needs

23:18

attention is certainly a different

23:20

application that I will be bearing in

23:22

mind specifically watching how and

23:24

where Miami uses that with their day three

23:26

picks in this year's class. So

23:29

I thought that was a really interesting

23:31

answer but can certainly relate to Chris

23:34

talking about spending time assembling a

23:36

board and then you get into

23:38

the actual trenches and that

23:40

board changes and the dynamics of it change

23:42

very quickly. And you guys will

23:44

be able to follow along with that because over

23:46

on touchdown Miami which is where I do my

23:48

long form written dolphins content, my

23:51

dolphins draft board will be made available

23:53

there for you guys to download. And

23:57

you'll see very quickly about the... visual

24:00

representation of value at each position in the

24:02

draft class, and then see how

24:04

quickly it changes when names start

24:06

coming off of that board. And staying

24:10

true, it can be very easy to find

24:12

yourself in a very obvious best player available

24:14

situation when it

24:16

is that fluid and you have

24:19

your own individual set of criteria

24:21

that players are available

24:23

to you and then very quickly become not available to

24:25

you and the runs start happening and you're mindful. And

24:27

that takes you all the way back to trading up

24:29

or down for 21. And is there

24:31

a lot of depth in a position

24:34

group that you wanted to address? And if not,

24:36

and you're seeing that group whittle all the way

24:38

down, you might be proactive to go

24:40

up and get a guy. And

24:42

that's the shoes that if Miami wants to trade

24:44

down and maximize their first round pick and recoup

24:46

more value back because they're out of first round

24:49

picks just to tie all these talking points together,

24:51

that's the shoes that the Dolphins find somebody in

24:55

when they're calling Miami about that

24:57

pick. Or you

25:00

have one guy left who is indeed, as

25:02

Chris alluded to, an impact

25:04

player that you stick and pick. So

25:07

how about the draft? There's so many different angles to it.

25:09

There's so many different variables to it. And

25:12

we are getting closer, about nine

25:14

days away from the start of it this year, which I'm

25:17

very fired up for. And keep it locked in right here

25:19

on Locked on Dolphins. It is your team every day. I

25:21

appreciate you guys checking out the show. Make

25:23

it a great rest of your day. I'm

25:25

out of here. Fins up.
