0:58

1:00

to the media on Wednesday and

1:02

shared some insight into the team's

1:04

long-term tee building strategy, the

1:06

strategy if the team picks it 21

1:08

to a tongue of Aloha and more

1:10

2:00

the thing that you probably don't know unless you've been

2:02

here about the NFL Combine is

2:06

you when you think you got your day lined up, you

2:09

get pulled in 18,000 different directions. That was me yesterday because

2:11

I know we did the first show, the morning show yesterday,

2:14

said, you know, we're going to do a double dip. Chris Greer is going

2:16

to speak later today. Well, Chris Greer

2:19

speaks and by the time they post the video

2:21

of the Chris Greer interview and I get the

2:23

transcript of the Chris Greer interview, it's a little

2:25

later in the afternoon that

2:27

I've been anticipating and then we had a dinner reservation

2:29

for locked on and getting all

2:32

the locked on folks together, kind of go over

2:34

strategy for tomorrow's content

2:36

and sharing intel from

2:38

what we got the previous day. And then a

2:40

couple of people that I know that are in agency that are

2:42

here doing work representing players, hey, do you want to

2:45

get ketchup, grab a beer, whatever. And long story short,

2:47

I got back to my hotel and it was

2:50

1am and I'm like, well, I didn't do the

2:53

Chris Greer podcast. So we're going to do it

2:56

on Thursday morning and see if we can find another excuse

2:58

to do a double dip later in the week. So it

3:01

is always crazy here

3:03

in Indianapolis. And the

3:06

people who come for the first time, they always come away

3:08

and they're like, wow, it's nothing like what I thought the

3:10

combine was going to be. Because what you see sitting

3:12

at home is the TV

3:14

stuff. And the TV

3:16

stuff is like eight on the list of

3:18

things that get accomplished here at the NFL

3:20

Combine. So it is very

3:22

much a job

3:25

fair networking event

3:27

that just sometimes

3:31

puts through the wringer and I got put through the

3:33

wringer yesterday. So my objective today is to not get

3:35

put through the wringer and stay on course. And that

3:37

starts by coming to you guys and

3:39

talking about what Chris Greer had to say. And

3:43

Chris Greer spoke on everything from Xavier

3:45

Howard and Toronto and Armstead and Robert

3:47

Hunt and Cam Smith

3:50

and Tua and draft

3:52

strategy and long-term

3:54

approach to building a roster and

3:57

how a quarterback on a second contract would hype it

3:59

that way. change that a

4:02

lot of good stuff so I tried to pick the

4:04

most important stuff for perspective on

4:06

the team which is what I always try to do right

4:08

and there's some fans that are out there and I see

4:10

you in the YouTube comments and I see you on social

4:13

media and you only hear you don't hear about perspective and

4:15

that like that's fine okay but

4:17

the world's gonna keep on turning the

4:20

Dolphins are gonna try to keep getting better

4:23

and they are very

4:25

much within their competitive

4:27

window still as a team

4:29

the question is is

4:31

this the year that you unlock

4:33

enough new things to go

4:35

into a different level that's

4:38

that's the mystery for this team but

4:41

as Chris Greer talks about you know they look at everything

4:43

in both the short term and the long term and

4:46

I think that's something

4:48

that as we prep for this first clip

4:50

it and snippet from Chris Greer

4:54

it's important to keep in mind that the

4:56

decision-making process is not just

4:58

like 2024 is not the last season of

5:00

NFL play right and

5:03

as they continue to build as

5:06

so long as they continue to be competitive they

5:09

are going to continue to have the chances to

5:13

cyclically build up while having

5:16

a floor that is competitive on an annual

5:18

basis it's kind of the ideal that they're

5:20

going for and they've aimed

5:23

of locked that in the last four years

5:25

that's what they've been they've been competitive they've

5:27

been in postseason appearances that's

5:29

not why we play the game obviously

5:31

that's not nobody's checking their resume is

5:33

full based off of that they've

5:36

achieved the floor that they want to aspire for now

5:38

you got to cyclically build up to

5:40

attack the ceiling that you want to have too

5:42

so let's hear from Chris

5:44

Greer about how the

5:47

long-term strategy from a team building

5:49

perspective needs to be different as you

5:51

work your way through particularly if you have

5:53

a quarterback on a second contract this from

5:55

Chris Greer yesterday well it's I mean it's

5:57

a challenge but I think the one thing

5:59

that Brandon Shore and Max and

6:01

Paul Tonnesen when we talk is we're

6:03

always looking short term and long term.

6:05

And so in terms of

6:08

having some flexibility and how contracts are structured

6:10

and stuff. So again,

6:12

yes, every year you can't go make those moves

6:15

that people get excited for, or help your teams. Because I

6:17

mean, you're seeing it around the league, it's not sustainable. At

6:20

some point you have to reel it

6:22

back a little bit and then add

6:24

some youth and influx and then

6:27

cherry pick here and there where you go. And

6:29

so, you know, we've been looking at

6:33

all different ways in terms of building this

6:35

and keeping our roster competitive. Flexibility,

6:40

contract structure. These are the things that we

6:43

talk about on this show quite a bit about

6:46

how and why the

6:48

Dolphins are approaching this

6:50

competitive window that they are in. And now

6:52

that they are in the competitive window, the

6:55

onus is on them to maximize the competitive window.

6:57

So I do think it's interesting to hear Chris

6:59

Greer say that part out loud that there is

7:01

going to come a point in time where

7:04

cyclically you have

7:06

to scale back and

7:08

add another infusion of young talent. Is

7:12

this that year for Miami? I think maybe it's

7:14

a little bit more of a balancing act. I

7:16

would expect them to not be as aggressive. And

7:20

they weren't last year either. And I think that's

7:22

important to remember as well. We went through the

7:24

first wave of free agency and you knew the

7:26

team didn't have the draft capital early. They didn't

7:28

have a first round pick. And

7:31

they still made enough adjustments

7:34

from scheme and talent and

7:36

selectively choosing players to go from a

7:39

nine win team that arguably was better

7:42

than that, if not for the

7:44

injuries, particularly at the quarterback position and

7:46

at the cornerback position in 2022 to a team that

7:50

was an 11 win team that quite

7:52

frankly should have been more than 11

7:54

win team, if not for the injuries

7:56

that they had and some very frustrating

7:58

late season lapses. So

8:02

the team was better last year than the year before.

8:07

I think the team still has the opportunity

8:09

to make economic transitions in

8:11

certain spots to cheaper players that are

8:14

still good players. And

8:16

they have more resources than they had last year

8:18

from a draft capital

8:20

perspective. And whether

8:22

that means moving out of that pick, whether that

8:24

means staying in that pick, whether that means kind

8:27

of just being status quo

8:29

this year and then being ready to make a

8:32

fuller transition next year. Hearing

8:34

that part out loud is important

8:36

perspective for Dolphins fans because they

8:38

look at the short term and

8:41

the long term. So when we talk about contracts and exit

8:44

strategies out of contracts based on how they're

8:46

structured and overlapping and intertwining the

8:48

big picture in the here and now

8:50

and the big picture on a five

8:52

year forecast for the team – that's

8:56

an arbitrary number of years, by the way. I don't

8:58

know that for a fact. It's

9:02

not just haphazard and it's not as reckless

9:04

as I think it has at

9:06

times been advertised

9:08

as. There's

9:11

a how and a why here and now

9:14

with long term. And the

9:16

flexibility of the contracts is a big part

9:18

of that. And I give Chris Greer, Brandon

9:20

Schor, their whole team in that regard a

9:23

lot of props because I think that's one

9:25

of the things that this organization does

9:28

pretty well. They

9:30

put themselves in position to

9:32

pay players significant money

9:34

to have good talent on the

9:36

team, but they do so

9:38

in a way that allows

9:41

them fluidity in how they

9:44

exit those contracts or how they phase contracts

9:46

in and phase other contracts out and

9:49

allow them to overlap those contracts with

9:51

each other to ideally

9:54

maximize your competitiveness within your winning

9:56

window, which is what this team

9:58

does. It

10:01

was neat to hear Chris Greer kind of touch on that a little

10:03

bit, because that is certainly

10:05

one of the main

10:08

storylines of this team

10:10

as they try to

10:13

ride the wave and continue to

10:15

get better is that those

10:18

simultaneous pursuits is

10:22

essential to what Miami is ultimately

10:25

trying to achieve, which is competitiveness

10:28

on an annual basis where, yeah,

10:30

maybe cyclically you get talent lined

10:32

up more attractively in one year

10:34

versus another, but nevertheless, you're

10:36

still going to compete on an annual basis,

10:38

which is what anybody really could ask for

10:41

in the NFL unless you have Tom Brady

10:43

or Patrick Mahomes, just

10:45

being honest. So up

10:48

next, we have the strategy for

10:50

the pick at 21, assuming the Dolphins

10:52

stay at 21, which Chris

10:55

Greer did not commit to because of course not. Why

10:57

would he? That's next here on

10:59

this episode of Locked on Dolphins. So

11:01

12:12

So the Dolphins obviously are looking at

12:14

their first round

12:16

draft selection in

12:19

three years. The team's last

12:21

first round picks were Jalen

12:23

Waddle and Jalen Phillips as players

12:25

that are now eligible for

12:28

contract extensions after their third year

12:30

of NFL play. So

12:34

Miami obviously do the inventory. They had three

12:36

first round picks scheduled after those draft selections

12:38

in the last two years and they

12:41

went to Roger Goodell.

12:46

Roll my eyes. We'll see if anything happens

12:49

with the defensive coordinator who left

12:51

Miami and the same day was hired by the

12:53

team. Bradley

12:56

Chum and Tyree Kill. Great

13:00

players. No question. Great players.

13:02

Players that

13:05

I think showcase their worth at a very high level for the

13:07

Dolphins this year. But

13:11

as Chris Greer said at some

13:13

point you have to scale back

13:15

those efforts and you have to

13:18

get the fresh infusion of the

13:20

next wave of rookie

13:23

labor that is coming at

13:25

20% of the cost. And

13:28

they have to be good players if you're going to

13:30

have success. So that's kind

13:32

of where Miami sits. Their pick at 21. I

13:37

have said and I know I just went on Joe Rose

13:39

earlier this week on WQAM and

13:42

shared this sentiment as well. But

13:45

the Dolphins need to do everything in their power to

13:47

make sure that when draft weekend comes

13:49

around they don't feel like they're painted

13:52

into a corner. This is what Chris Greer had

13:54

to say about the strategy at picking at 21

13:56

assuming that's where they pick with

13:58

their first round draft selection. in this year's draft? I think

14:01

at the end of the day, we'll take a 21. So

14:04

we always take the best player. And

14:06

if it's someone that even

14:08

has that position, I

14:12

don't want to speculate position, but position people think

14:14

we're stacked at, you never know. Last

14:16

year, when we said our outside

14:18

linebacker group was really deep, and

14:20

the things happened. And then the

14:22

receivers, a waddle went down a

14:24

little bit. Tyreek got banged up.

14:26

So in this league, the

14:28

way the injuries happen, you

14:31

need depth everywhere. So you can have the

14:33

safe pick, but if there's

14:35

a guy that you truly believe

14:37

is a supremely

14:39

talented player and loves football, and

14:41

will work to reach

14:44

that ceiling, then it's up

14:46

to us to spend the time and invest in

14:48

them, to find out and then you make that

14:50

decision. You feel it's best for the roster, not

14:53

just short term, but long term as well. Short

14:56

term and long term, right? And that's

14:58

the challenge, I think for me,

15:01

for everybody who is dissatisfied with where this

15:04

team is at or is too impatient with

15:06

where this team is at. The

15:09

teams that have the long

15:13

term competitiveness and

15:17

the ability to do

15:20

this year in and year out, and

15:22

can make personnel moves and see them

15:24

come to fruition, be it through

15:26

the draft or free agency or trades or whatever, there's

15:30

a certain level of stability within football operations that

15:32

has to come with that. And I'm not saying

15:34

it has to be like the Baltimore Ravens where

15:36

Ozzy Newsom did it for 20 years. And I'm

15:38

not saying it has to be like the

15:41

Pittsburgh Steelers where they

15:43

had three head coaches since the

15:45

Nixon administration, right? Like it doesn't have to

15:47

be to that extreme. But

15:50

if we're just like, progress

15:52

was made, but progress isn't good enough and I

15:54

don't care about progress, I want playoff wins and

15:56

I want a Super Bowl trophy. And if you're

15:58

not going to do that within a. certain defined

16:00

window that I feel is arbitrarily correct, and you

16:02

can get the heck out of Dodge and get

16:05

out of here. The problem with that is

16:07

if you make these changes haphazardly

16:10

or emotionally, and I get it,

16:13

we as fans of the team

16:15

aren't owed objectiveness,

16:19

and fan is short for fanatic, so

16:21

I get it. But

16:25

if you're gonna build the most talented

16:28

roster that you can, drafting the most

16:30

talented player is the way to do

16:32

that. The challenge is

16:34

if you

16:36

draft the most talented player in your

16:38

perspective, that might not

16:41

have a pathway to playing in year

16:43

one like a Cam Smith

16:45

in their opinion. And anybody who is at training camp

16:47

would tell you that Cam Smith balled out. Chris Greer

16:49

was asked about Cam Smith. He said he balled

16:52

out in training camp last year. Then he got

16:54

banged up a little bit, and then he came

16:56

back, and you look at Vic Fangio and his

16:59

scheme, and there's a track record with young players

17:01

of that taking a little bit of time, but

17:03

we're very excited about Cam Smith. I

17:05

hear that. I kind of expect Cam Smith to just be

17:09

phased in as the other outside corner opposite Jalen

17:12

Ramsey. Like

17:14

I feel like they kind of have that attitude, and

17:16

they've internally had a chance to evaluate him on a

17:19

daily basis. They see it,

17:21

and we don't. But

17:23

people look at Cam Smith as a failed draft pick right

17:25

now. And

17:27

if the team was to come out and they were to draft a wide

17:30

receiver, right, at the first

17:33

round pick, people would say, this is

17:35

a bozo maneuver. They have two good wide receivers.

17:37

They don't need a third good wide receiver. But

17:40

there's gonna come a time in the next three years where

17:42

you're gonna probably phase out the Tyree Kill contract. And

17:45

when that time comes, having

17:48

somebody else who's good and

17:50

the talented player who

17:52

you drafted preemptively because he was the best

17:54

player on the board allows

17:57

you to then make that decision. make

18:00

continued good decisions to again field

18:02

as talented and competitive as a

18:04

roster as you possibly can but

18:07

if you say oh well he he drafted Cam

18:09

Smith and The team

18:11

hit their ceiling and this was their best shot and the

18:14

offensive line wasn't good enough and they've invested a bunch of

18:16

resources There he needs to go. Okay,

18:18

you bring somebody else in you know what they're gonna do

18:21

because this is what football people everywhere do They're

18:23

gonna flush out all the people that weren't there things and

18:25

say I want my guy here. I'll home. I got there I want

18:28

my my guy here That's

18:30

a whole three-year process of undoing more

18:33

subtly than the Dolphins did in 2019 but

18:35

nevertheless still undoing a lot of what's

18:37

been done and Then

18:40

you'll get to the end of third year there and they'll say well,

18:42

they didn't have the big breakthrough and like I Understand

18:45

like there's teams that have Breakthrough

18:48

moments Houston this year, but

18:50

Houston was like the worst team in the league

18:52

for three consecutive years to build up that Imagine

18:56

you put yourself and go back to 2019 and

18:59

ask yourself would I be willing to exchange? 2019

19:02

2020 and 2021 the universally be the worst team

19:04

in football Or

19:07

that stretch of time Is

19:10

the Cleveland Browns did with Hugh

19:12

Jackson? It's what the Texans did

19:14

with their parade of one-year coaches To

19:19

have the payoff that Cleveland has had now or

19:22

they've Won 11 plus

19:24

games twice in the last three years The

19:27

Texans go from the worst team in football to

19:29

a 10-win team now. We'll see if there's sustainability

19:31

there You'd like to think so

19:36

And what would the tone be if you spent three years doing

19:38

that I Don't

19:41

know I think you're darned if you do and you're darned

19:43

if you don't personally and I'm not

19:45

making excuses There's things that need to get better

19:48

with this dolphins team. There's there's been missteps misevaluations.

19:50

There's no question But

19:54

I love hearing that thought process from

19:56

Chris Greer and I hope the team

19:59

continues And people are not gonna agree with this

20:01

and you can disagree. That's fine. Yell at me at the comments I'm

20:03

probably not gonna read it because I already know I'm gonna put Chris

20:05

green the title of the show Everybody who hates

20:07

Chris crew is gonna come out in full force with their

20:09

pitchforks and they're gonna play about So

20:12

I'm not gonna read the comments You can

20:14

leave whatever comment you want. I don't care. I Hope

20:17

the team continues to give this

20:20

brain trust The opportunity

20:22

continue to as long as they

20:25

continue to grow as

20:27

long as they continue to be competitive I

20:29

hope they are allowed the

20:31

opportunity to continue to Operate

20:34

both short-term and long-term visions for

20:36

the team Eggie

20:42

Speaking of long-term vision for the team

20:44

Quarterback contract is looming for the Dolphins with two

20:46

a tongue below Chris Greer was asked about that

20:48

21:17

So Chris

21:21

Greer asked about two a tongue of a loa Is

21:24

there another level to two a

21:26

tongue of loa scheme and I've

21:29

addressed this Question storyline

21:31

a little bit and I would say from

21:33

a physical Attribute

21:37

perspective. I don't think there

21:39

is But that doesn't mean

21:41

that two a tongue of a loa the quarterback

21:44

Cannot tap into another level

21:46

of play based on his

21:48

understanding of the

21:51

offense timing of the offense

21:54

When to take check downs that he was like one of

21:56

the lowest percentage quarterbacks in the NFL this past year taking

21:59

check pecteens against two high shelves. Those

22:03

are the kinds of things that making

22:05

the right decision, you've

22:08

seen low tools, air quotes, physical

22:11

attribute quarterbacks executed at a very high level

22:13

because they operate within the pocket and they

22:15

make sound decisions. And they

22:17

take what the defense gives them. And I

22:19

think that's the biggest thing for Tuya, continuing

22:21

to find the balance of taking

22:24

what the defense gives you is

22:28

going to allow him, I think, to take

22:30

his game to another level. Now, that's my

22:32

opinion on the matter. Here's what

22:35

Chris Greer had to say about the matter with Tuya talking about

22:37

Loa and if there's another level that he could take his game

22:39

to. And we all feel there's still

22:41

another level that he can take it. And I think if you

22:43

asked Tuya, he would tell you that too. And

22:46

so just his growth

22:48

on and off the field like being voted captain

22:50

last year and then seeing how he

22:52

is behind the scenes with

22:55

guys and holding people accountable is

22:58

huge. So I think

23:00

the way he's attacked this and wants to

23:02

be great and

23:05

the combination of Mike and working with that and that

23:07

trust and belief in each other, we do think there's

23:09

still another level we can go. So

23:11

they clearly feel that way. And that's going

23:13

to be manifested with a contract extension that

23:16

is going to come out that people are

23:18

probably going to be a little uncomfortable with

23:21

from a dollars amount. That's

23:24

the nature of quarterback contracts. I'm not justifying

23:26

it. I certainly think my offers to Tuya

23:28

tongue of a Loa would not

23:31

be market reset dollars. I think

23:33

there are enough questions there that you want to proactively

23:35

get a deal done so that

23:37

if you reach your aspirations and you continue

23:39

to contend and win double digit

23:41

games, be in playoff appearances and start winning playoff

23:43

games, like if all that happens and that contract

23:46

is not done. OK,

23:48

then the dollars are going

23:50

to get really uncomfortable because the salary cap is going to

23:52

continue to shoot up to the moon. So

23:55

I think for my

23:58

perspective, I understand. why

24:00

getting a contract is done because it invokes

24:04

a lot of the things that

24:06

we're talking about about having a big picture

24:08

plan in addition to maximizing a short time

24:10

window and for

24:13

that To the

24:15

Dolphins to make the most of that. Yes to

24:17

a tongue of Aloha does have to take his

24:19

game To another level

24:22

and is that there they think it

24:24

is there? He thinks it is

24:26

there. I can see the pathway for

24:29

it being there even if it is not as

24:31

simple as and I To

24:35

had had all the durability stuff last year and his

24:37

response was to add weight To

24:39

had have more bulk more core strength

24:41

protect his head and

24:44

take the hits and rigors of an NFL season

24:47

better than he had previously and He

24:49

does that and I see these

24:51

bozos On

24:54

social media saying he

24:56

needs to lose the weight. He can't move

24:58

no duh guys And

25:01

I'll tell you what a lot of the

25:03

best defenses in the league Force

25:05

you to operate within the pocket and

25:08

execute an offense within the pocket Which

25:10

is to a tongue below a strength

25:13

and it should be his strength and I

25:15

would be highly disappointed If

25:17

to a tongue below came out next year and says

25:19

yeah, I dropped 15 pounds I'm trying to move around

25:22

more because the thing

25:24

that you did to stay on the field

25:26

worked and That's

25:29

more important Than

25:31

a handful of off-script plays that put you in a

25:33

position to take hits that quite frankly. It's not your

25:35

game Know your

25:37

game understand your game, and he showed

25:39

that last year which I applaud But

25:43

it's the perfect embodiment of there's just

25:46

no winning Where

25:48

he's too light And

25:50

he can move He's too fragile so

25:53

he gets hurt. Okay. I'm a bulk up Take

25:56

hits better. Well. No you can't move You

25:59

need to lose the weight It's

26:03

just moving – the goalposts have

26:05

to – we need to pour

26:08

the foundation and put the goalposts in the ground somewhere

26:10

and just leave them there. And

26:13

for me, my perspective on it, yeah,

26:18

he is going to be a quarterback that plays and operates

26:20

within the pocket. And

26:23

the other level of that is going to come

26:25

here, between the ears, for those

26:27

of you not on YouTube, for Tua. I

26:30

think that's where the next level has to come. We'll

26:34

see if it does. And

26:37

they seem to think it will because they're prepared

26:39

to put their money where their mouth is and

26:41

saying that it will. Because that contract is going

26:43

to be coming down the mountain here for

26:45

too long. That's going

26:47

to do it for us here on this episode of
